Research on the method of calculating and estimating evapotranspiration has been steadily conducted. Various models have been developed according to different backgrounds, and each of these models has different characteristics such as required input data. Therefore, this study introduces the theoretical background and characteristics of evapotranspiration models and the development process of domestic research on evapotranspiration by era. First, the origin and theoretical background of the potential evapotranspiration models are summarized in addition to classifying them by input data. Then, the characteristics of the actual evapotranspiration estimation methods are summarized. Additionally, methods based on observation and methods using the rainfall-runoff models are summarized.

The impacts of climate change on yield and evapotranspiration of rice have been modeled using AquaCrop model developed by Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). Climate change scenario downscaled by Mesoscale Model 5 (MM5) regional model from ECHO-G General Circulation Model (GCM) outputs by Korea Meteorological Research Institute (METRI) was used in this study. Monthly average climate data for baseline (1971-2000) and three time periods (2020s, 2050s and 2080s) were used as inputs to the AquaCrop model. The results showed that the evapotranspiration after transplanting was projected to increase by 4 % (2020s), 8 % (2050s) and 14 % (2080s), respectively, from the baseline value of 464 mm. The potential rice yield was 6.4 t/ha and water productivity was 1.4 kg/$m^3$ for the baseline. The potential rice yield was projected to increase by 23 % (2020s), 55 % (2050s), and 98 % (2080s), respectively, by the increased photosynthesis along with the $CO_2$ concentration increases. The water productivity was projected to increase by 19 % (2020s), 44 % (2050s), and 75 % (2080s), respectively.
In this study, the effects of potential evapotranspiration method on drought index results were evaluated using SC-PDSI. Monthly heat index method, Penman-Monteith method, and Hargreaves equation were used as potential evapotranspiration method. SC-PDSI was calculated using three potential evapotranspiration method at 56 stations and compared the results. As a result, it was confirmed that the results by Penman-Monteith method and Hargreaves equation showed similar SC-PDSI calculation results without much difference, and the result by monthly heat index method showed a relatively large difference. It was confirmed that the results of SC-PDSI and drought situation judgment for the period of spring and winter season showed a big difference by the month. In conclusion, when calculating PDSI in Korea, using Penman-Monteith method and Hargreaves equation will be able to express the drought situation well.
This study is conducted to find out potential evapotranspiration values computed by a reasonable formula which is well suited among the existing ones for Suweon area. Each formula based on the data from Suweon Agricultural Meteorological Station during 1964 to 1973. Five formulas which are Blanney-Criddle, Thornthwaite, Penman, Jensen-Haise and Truc have been applied for calculation of potential evapotanspiration. Results obtained are summarized as follows. 1. Potential evapotranspiration of Suweon area shows uni-modal distribution which maximum value occurs in summer and minimum value occurs in winter. Annual potential evapotranspiration computed by Blanney-Criddle formula is 1,377 mm and that computed by others ranges from 714mm to 896mm. 2. Potential evapotranspiration computed by Blanney-Criddle formula is higher value than that computed by others, and among the other formulas it's values show little differences. However, relationships between the former and the mean of four others is highly correlated. 3. In comparison with potential evapotranspiration computed by formulas and actual evapotranspiration for rice paddy which is already reported, value for crop coefficient may be 0.8 in local varities, 1.0 in Tongil varity on Blanney-Criddle formula, and 1.2 in local varities and 1.5 in Tongil varity on the mean of four other fomulas. 4. Five formulas may applied for calculation of potential evapotranspiration because of relatively good correlation among them. However Blanney-Criddle formula is one of recommendable ones, because it is easy to compute and requires less data in compare with other formulas.

One of the most important hydrologic components is evapotranspiration. It is a process by which water is evaporated from moist land surfaces and transpired into atmosphere by plants. There are many methods of estimating evapotranspiration rate and its potential such as the methods of soil-moisture sampling, lysimeter measurements, water balance, energy balance, groundwater fluctuations and evapotranspiration. But it is very difficult to estimate evapotranspiration in terms of regional discrete characteristics of topography and/or vegetation. The evapotranspiration is strongly affected by ground covering vegetation, and the degree of vegetation growth. In order to grasp vegetation condition over a vast study area, NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Indices) calculated from the data obtained from NOAA/AVHRR were utilized. Through multi-regression analysis, we developed a model equation to estimate the evapotranspiration using NDVIs and temperature data.
Evapotranspiration is a key element in designing and operating agricultural hydraulic structures. The profound effect of climate change to local agro-hydrological systems makes it inevitable to study the potential variability in evapotranspiration rate in order to develop policies on future agricultural water management as well as to evaluate changes in agricultural environment. The APEX-Paddy model was used to simulate local evapotranspiration responses to climate change scenarios. Nine Global Climate Models(GCMs) downscaled using a non-parametric quantile mapping method and a Multi?Model Ensemble method(MME) were used for an uncertainty analysis in the climate scenarios. Results indicate that APEX-Paddy and the downscaled 9 GCMs reproduce evapotranspiration accurately for historical period(1976~2005). For future periods, simulated evapotranspiration rate under the RCP 4.5 scenario showed increasing trends by -1.31%, 2.21% and 4.32% for 2025s(2011~2040), 2055s(2041~2070) and 2085s(2071~2100), respectively, compared with historical(441.6 mm). Similar trends were found under the RCP 8.5 scenario with the rates of increase by 0.00%, 4.67%, and 7.41% for the near?term, mid?term, and long?term periods. Monthly evapotranspiration was predicted to be the highest in August, July was the month having a strong upward trend while. September and October were the months showing downward trends in evapotranspiration are mainly resulted from the shortening of the growth period of paddy rice due to temperature increase and stomatal closer as ambient $CO_2$ concentration increases in the future.
Actual evapotranspiration (AET) in the Suyeong-gu was estimated and correlations between AET and meteorological factors were analyzed. The study area was Suyeong-gu lay at the east longitude $129^{\circ}$ 05' 40" ~ 129$^{\circ}$ 08' 08" and north latitude $35^{\circ}$ 07' 59" ~ $35^{\circ}$ 11' 01". The Kumryun mountain, the Bae mountain, the Suyeong river and the Suyeong bay are located on west, north, northeaster and south side in the study area, respectively. AET was estimated using precipitation (P), potential evapotranspiration (PET) and plant-available water coefficient. Meteorological factors to estimate PET were air temperature, dewpoint temperature, atmospheric pressure, duration of sunshine and mean wind speed (MWS). PET and AET were estimated by a method of Allen et al. (1998) and Zhang et al. (2001), respectively. PET was the highest value (564.45 mm/yr) in 2002 year, while it was the lowest value (449.95 mm/yr) in 2003 year. AET was estimated highest value (554.14 mm/yr) in 2002 year and lowest value (427.91 mm/yr) in 2003 year. Variations of PET and AET were similar. The linear regression function of AET as PET using monthly data was AET=0.87$\times$PET+3.52 and coefficient of determination was high, 0.75. In order to analyze relationship between the evapotranspiration and meteorological factors, correlation analysis using monthly data were accomplished. Correlation coefficient of AET-PET was 0.96 high, but they of AET-P and PET-P were very low. Correlation coefficients of AET-MWS and PET-MWS were 0.67 and 0.73, respectively. Thus, correlation between evapotranspiration and MWS was the highest among meteorological factors in Suyong-gu. This means that meteorological factor to powerfully effect for the variation of evapotranspiration was MWS. The linear regression function of AET as MWS was AET=84.73$\times$MWS+223.05 and coefficient of determination was 0.54. The linear regression function of PET as MWS was PET=83.83$\times$MWS+203.62 and coefficient of determination was 0.45.
Meteorological and soil water content data measured from semiarid watersheds of Lucky Hills and Kendall during the summer rainy and winter periods were used to study the interrelationships between the controlling variables of the evapotranspiration, and to evaluate the effects of variables on daily actual evapotranspiration (ET) estimation. Simple and multiple linear regression (MLR) analyses were employed to evaluate the order of importance of the meteorological and soil water factors involved. The information gained was used for MLR model development. Theavailable energy and vapor pressure deficit were found to be the important variables to estimate actual ET (AET) for both periods and at both watersheds. Therefore, the important variables of evapotranspiration process in these semiarid watersheds appear to be simply the components of energy term in available energy and aerodynamic term in vapor pressure deficit of Penman potential evapotranspiration (PET) equation.

The aridity index, which is determined as the ratio of potential evapotranspiration to precipitation, is one of key parameters in drought characterization. Whereas the evaporative index, which is defined as the ratio of actual evapotranspiration to precipitation, represents the fraction of available water consumed by the evapotranspiration process. This study investigates variation of the aridity and evaporative indexes due to climate change during the 21st century in South Korea. Estimations of the aridity and evaporative indexes are obtained using SWAT mode based on ensemble of 13 different GCMs over 5 large basins of South Korea for 2 RCP scenarios (RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5). The results shows the opposite trends of the two indexes, where the aridity index is projected as always increase, while the evaporative index is expected to decrease in all of 3 future period (2011-1940, 1941-1970, 1971-2099). The estimated results also suggest that land cover influenced significantly evapotranspiration along with the change of climate. The study indicates that South Korea will be facing with a high risk of water scarcity in future due to climate change, which is seriously challenging for water planing and management in the country.
