A Study on Mechanical Properties of PBT/ABS Blends with Compatibilizers (PBT/ABS 블렌드의 상용화제에 따른 기계적 물성 연구)

  • Poly-butylene-terephalate(PBT) can be impact-modified by blending with ABS material. The effects of compatibilizers and ABS content on the mechanical properties of PBT/ABS blend were examined in this study. EPDM-g-GMA and polycarbonate(PC) were used as a compatibilizer. As the GMA content in EPDM-g-GMA increased, the tensile strength of PBT/ABS blend increased and the impact strength decreased. With increasing the EPDM-g-GMA content in PBT/ABS blend, the tensile strength and impact strength decreased. With PC compatibilizer, the particle size of ABS in PBT/ABS blend became smaller than that of the blend without compatibilizer and the particles were more evenly dispersed in matrix. The maximum impact strength of the PBT/ABS blend was observed in the range of 20~30% ABS content.

  • It is well-known that the defects (existing in structures) and the material degradation(caused by the fatigue load) generally initiate the failure of structures. The NDE such as ultrasonic technique which can be used to detect the size and the orientation of defects has been utilized to estimate the life and stability of structures. However, only few experimental reports made by using the ultrasonic technique have been published for the case of fatigue estimation of materials and structures. The purpose of this study is, thus, to derive the relationship between ultrasonic attenuation and fatigue behavior of Polycarbonate and PMMA through ultrasonic characterization. It is also attempted to offer NDE experimental procedure which may be useful to predict fatigue life.

  • Rotating annular disks are widely used in data storage devices such as CDs, DVDs(digital versatile disks), and HDs(hard disks). Higher data transfer rate in data storage disks could not be achieved by polycarbonate disks in the present market. The problem can be solved by applying the fiber-reinforce composite materials to the disks. In this paper, an application of composite materials to rotating disks is proposed to increase the critical speed. Dynamic equation is formulated in order to calculate the natural frequency and critical speed for rotating composite by the Galerkin method. The results show that the radially reinforced disk is more effective in increasing critical speed than the circumferentially reinforced disk.

  • 타겟 전압 제어를 통한 반응성 스퍼터링 방법과 유도결합 플라즈마(ICP: inductively coupled plasma)를 통해 산화알루미늄 박막을 증착하였다. 폴리카보네이트 기판과 산화알루미늄 박막사이의 접착력은 플라즈마 표면처리 하여 향상시켰다. 박막 특성은 ICP power 변화에 대한 경도, 구조, 밀도변화, 투과율, 증착속도, 표면 거칠기 및 잔류응력을 조사하여 보호코팅으로서 성능을 평가하였다.

  • In this study, ZnO film was deposited on polycarbonate substrate by spin-spray method at low substrate temperature of $85^{\circ}C$. Surface morphology of ZnO films was changed by adding citrate from rod to dense structure. As-deposited ZnO film indicated high transmittance above 80%. In case of the resistivity, as-deposited ZnO film had high resistivity due to the existence of organic substance in the film. However, organic substance was removed and resistivity was decreased to $3.9{\times}10^{-2}{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$, after UV irradiation.

  • In this study, the vibration characteristics were theoretically analyzed by modeling a free isotropic rotating disk with an outer periphery with a fixed inner periphery, paying attention to disks used as storage devices for information devices, especially magnetic disks, magneto-optical disks, and compact disks in which the head and disk are non-contact. Iluminate with Composite materials represented by fiber-reinforced plastics (FRP) have high specific strength (strength/density) and specific stiffness (narrowness/density). It is used in the elements, and its use is rapidly expanding. Under this circumstance, the disk currently manufactured using an isotropic material made of various plastic materials such as aluminum or polycarbonate as a base material is an extremely anisotropic material made of a composite material, and the circumferential stiffness of the disk is made of reinforcing fibers in the circumferential direction. It is modeled as an anisotropic rotating disk with increased, and its influence on the vibration characteristics is revealed.

  • Bisphenol A(BPA) is a monomer widely used in the manufacturing polycarbonate plastic or epoxy resin and Mancozeb (MCZ), a polymeric complex of zinc and manganese salts of ethylene bisthiocarbamate, is widely used in agriculture as fungicide, insecticide and herbcide. These chemicals have been recently known as endocrine disruptors. To investigate the effects of BPA and MCZ on LPS-induced cytokine production (TNF-${\alpha}$) in vivo, female ICR mice were administered to various concentration of these materials (BPA; 100, 500, 1000 mg/kg/day, and MCZ; 250, 500, 1000, 1500 mg/kg/day) for 30 days and serum cytokine levels were measured at 1h post LPS injection (day 32) in BPA- or MCZ-administered mice.   • The aim of this study is to evaluate the permeability of PEG-conjugated salmon calcitonin (sCT) across monolayers of Caco-2 cells that represent a model of the intestinal barrier. Caco-2 cells were grown to confluency on a permeable polycarbonate membrane to permit transport through it. Permeability experiments were performed with native-sCT and PEG-conjugated sCT (PEG M.W. 2000) at various concentrations (5uM, 10uM, 25uM, 50uM, 100uM) in the apical to basolateral direction. The barrier properties were assessed by detecting transport of markder molecules ($^3$H-mannitol) and by measuring transepithelial electrical resistance (TEER). (omitted)

Development of Solar Energy Concentration for Plastic Joining

  • This paper presents development of a SEC(Solar Energy Concentration) utilizing the concentrated solar beam radiation for joining engineering thermoplastics such as Acrylonitrile/Butadiene/Styrene(ABS), Polycarbonate(PC) and Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA). In addition, to study the joining of the materials, necessary experimentation with applying primer was performed. Tensile tests were conducted to determine the bond strength achieved at the specimen Joint interface. Microscopic examinations of the fractured joints were performed in order to analyze the overall bond quality. Finally, the results in terms of bond strength achieved at the joint interface and energy consumed in the process was compared with those obtained with similar thermoplastic joining technique utilizing microwave energy.

Optimal filter materials for protist quantification via droplet digital PCR

  • The use of droplet digital polymerase chain reaction (ddPCR) has greatly improved the quantification of harmful protists, outperforming traditional methods like quantitative PCR. Notably, ddPCR provides enhanced consistency and reproducibility at it resists PCR inhibitors commonly found in environmental DNA samples. This study aimed to determine the most effective filter material for ddPCR protocols by assessing the reproducibility of species-specific gene copy numbers and filtration time across six filter types: cellulose acetate (CA), mixed cellulose ester (MCE), nylon (NY), polycarbonate (PC), polyethersulfone (PES), and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF). The study used two species of Chattonella marina complexes as a case study. Filtration rates were slower for NY, PC, and PVDF filters. Moreover, MCE, NY, PES, and PVDF yielded lower DNA amounts than other filters. Importantly, the CA filter exhibited the lowest variance (38-39%) and the highest determination coefficients (R2 = 0.92-0.96), indicating superior performance. These findings suggest that the CA filter is the most suitable for ddPCR quantification of marine protists, offering quick filtration and reliable reproducibility.
