  • In this study, thermal parameters were measured and 213 occupants were also questioned in three office buildings located in Seoul during the summer season. Predicted mean vote-predicted percentage of dissatisfied(PMV-PPD) and standard new effective temperature(SET*) were used for evaluating Korean thermal sensation. The distribution of thermal sensation vote(TSV) and percentage of dissatisfied(PD) is very similar to that of PMV and PPD. By regression analysis, the following regression equation was obtained; TSV=0.339SET*-8.583. In this case, neutral temperature and comfort range are $25.3^{\circ}C$, $23.8{\sim}26.8^{\circ}C$ respectively. Present experimental results obtained from the field study is less sensitive to the temperature change than those obtained from the climate chamber study in Korea. But, thermal sensations are similar to each other near the neutral point. The neutral temperature and comfort range obtained by this experiment are higher than those of ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 55-1974 about $1.4{\sim}1.8^{\circ}C$.

  • We performed the experimental and the numerical study on the comparison of thermal comfort performance indices for cooling loads in the lecture room for 4 cases: Fan coil unit(FCU) or 4-way cassette air-conditioner is respectively operated with the ventilation system or without. We measured the velocity, the temperature distribution and predicted mean vote(PMV) value in the lecture room for 4 different air-conditioning methods. Effective draft temperature(EDT) and PMV were investigated to analyze the characteristics of two thermal comfort indices in the lecture room and to compare their values each other. From the results we knew that there is the similarity between PMV values and EDTs when the room is air-conditioned for cooling loads. It turned out that definition of the control temperature is very important when the EDT is calculated. Finally EDT should not be used to predict the accurate thermal comfort in case that the temperature and humidity are suddenly varied and the zone affected by the solar and inner wall radiation.

  • Recently, research on evaluating thermal comfort by using CFD has been vigorously active. This research evaluates not only distribution of temperature and air flow analysing but also thermal comfort in indoor space by applying human model. But research of human model's shape, Grid characteristic and turbulence model has not yet been studied. In this paper, human model's shape, physical characteristic of variable Grid, and change of turbulence model has been studies by CFD. In this study. FLUENT is used for analysis and PMV(predicted Mean Vote), PPD(Predicted Percentage Dissatisfied) and EHT(Equivalent Homogeneous Temperature} are used for evaluation and comparison of thermal comfort. As a result, it shows that shape of CSP and lattice features does not affect on global flow field or evaluation on PMV, PPD. However, it demonstrates more precise result from evaluation of thermal comfort by equivalent temperature when it used detailed human model considering prism grid.

  • Various buildings constructed by environmentally friendly resources are being built in KOREA. Especially the building made by the wood, which has environmental characteristics that the reinforced concrete and brick doesn't have, are acknowledged with its superiority. Then, studies on indoor thermal control capability of the wooden building and influence of its indoor environment to sensory environment of occupants are not enough proceed. Thus, there were proceeded 24 hours measurements for indoor and outdoor thermal environmental elements of Log Cabins and the hourly subjective tests to evaluate indoor amenity of occupants in this study. The results of the study are following: 1) Upon evaluation on thermal environment elements, indoor and outdoor dry bulb temp were 22.0$^{\circ}C$ and -2.9$^{\circ}C$, and Indoor and outdoor average relative humidity were 25.8%and 52.7%. Differences of indoor and outdoor temperature and humidity were 24.9$^{\circ}C$ and 26.9%. 2) Upon contrastive analysis between the results of subjective tests, warm and cold sensation vote, and PMV (Predicted Mean Vote) and PPD (Predicted Percent Dissatisfaction), values of subjective tests W.9

  • The thermal comfort of indoor spaces is very important factor in our life. Regions, cultures, climates and individual difference for establishing thermally comfortable environments should be considered carefully because these factors have a large influence on the thermal comfort doing some complicated interactions with environmental, psychological and physical elements. Recently, predicted mean vote(PMV) based on the heat transfer theory between environmental factors and human bodies has evaluated by many researchers and widely used nowadays. The objective of this study is to evaluate the thermal comfort in workspaces with personal air conditioning system using the measurements of environmental comfort parameters and the questionnaire survey of occupant's thermal senses with response to the environment.

  • Safety is always acritical focus of exploration of ocean resources, and it is well recognized that human factor is one of the major causes of accidents and breakdowns. Our research developed a dynamic human reliability assessment approach, Predicted Mean Vote-Cognitive Reliability and Error Analysis Method (PMV-CREAM), that is applicable to monitoring the cognitive reliability of oceanauts during deep-sea missions. Taking into account the difficult and variable operating environment of manned submersibles, this paper analyzed the cognitive actions of oceanauts during the various procedures required by deep-sea missions, and calculated the PMV index using human factors and dynamic environmental data. The Cognitive Failure Probabilities (CFP) were calculated using the extended CREAM approach. Finally, the CFP were corrected using the PMV index. This PMV-CREAM hybrid model can be utilized to avoid human error in deep-sea research, thereby preventing injury and loss of life during undersea work. This paper verified the method with "Jiaolong" manned submersible 7,000 m dive test. The"Jiaolong" oceanauts CR(Corrected CFP) is dynamic from 3.0615E-3 to 4.2948E-3, the CR caused by the environment is 1.2333E-3. The result shown the PMV-CREAM method could describe the dynamic human reliability of manned submersible caused by thermal environment.

  • Attention plays vital role either students academic performance in classroom or work performance of workers. This study was accomplished among elementary school students of elementary school classroom for two years. Three experiment cases were designed based on the Predicted Mean Vote (PMV) indexes. Thermal environment and PMV were directly monitored; Thermal Sensation Vote (TSV) and Comfort Sensation Vote (CSV) were analyzed based on survey data; and attention was analyzed for different comfort level using FAIR program. PMV, TSV and CSV were varied with the change in thermal environment and there was not noticeable gender influence on impact. The good correlation between thermal environment, PMV, TSV and CSV confirmed the impact of thermal environment on indoor comfort. There were different impacts on attention with comfort conditions. Academic attention of low attention group i.e. weak students, can be improved by providing the comfort environment. Thermal environment influences the comfort and the comfort influences the attention, it is possible to assess the impact of thermal environment on attention in further.

  • This paper focused on the analysis of the thermal comfort conditions in 1,000 ton class patrol ship's cabins through the evaluation of PMV(predicted mean vote) and PPD(predicted percentage of dissatisfied). Different areas have different clothing and activity in the ship. Therefore, any area may be thermally uncomfortable in case of air conditioning with equal temperature, relative humidity and relative air velocity. PMV or PPD-DCAC (demand controlled air conditioning) system is a new design that the whole cabins are maintainable with the ideal thermal comfort condition.

  • The purpose of this study was to scientifically activate the forest healing program activities for the elderly. The predicted mean vote (PMV) and predicted percentage of dissatisfied (PPD), which are indices of thermal comfort in the thermal environment, and degree of canopy closure were compared and analyzed. Based on this information, the study objective was to present the appropriate conditions for maintaining the best comfort for the elderly. Six deck road shelters, which are the most active locations in forest healing programs among the National Center for Forest Therapy, were selected as the study sites. The results indicated that in the case of the conditions of 1 clo (clothing insulation value) and 1 met (metabolic rate) at an air temperature of 19 to 21 degrees in September on the measurement date, the PMV values ranged between -1.85 and -0.98 at all sites, and PPD values ranged between 25.60% and 68.68%. On the other hand, in the case of 1.3 clo and 1.6 met conditions, the PMV values ranged between -0.08 and 0.23 for all sites and PPD values ranged between 5.40 and 6.18. As shown above, the difference in thermal environment comfort and satisfaction according to the condition of the amount of metabolism and the amount of clothing could be confirmed. In addition, an analysis of the relation between PPD and canopy closure suggested a significantly positive correlation between them, and it was found that canopy closure was a factor affecting thermal comfort. Studies on effects of forest thermal environmental comfort and canopy closure on forest healing program areas should be conducted extensively according to seasonal conditions to provide information that can be used for more effective forest healing programs.
