  • In this paper, a nonlinear controller is proposed to track the desired velocity and to cancel sinusoidal disturbances. The proposed method consists of a velocity tracking controller and internal model principles (IMPs). For the design of the velocity tracking controller, mechanical and electrical dynamic controllers are independently designed. For the mechanical dynamics, the velocity tracking controller generates the desired quadrature current to track the desired velocity. The current tracking controller is designed to guarantee the desired quadrature current and to regulate the direct current. Therefore, the proposed velocity tracking controller has a field-oriented control. Since the controllers of the mechanical and electrical dynamics are independently designed, the stability of the closed-loop system is demonstrated using passivity. Since both the cogging torque and DC current errors act as sinusoidal disturbances in PMSM, we use four add-on type IMPs that preserve the merits and performance of the pre-designed controller without sacrificing the closed-loop stability. The performance of the proposed method is validated via simulations.

  • This paper investigates the field weakening operation of a five-phase permanent magnet motor. The proposed motor has concentrated windings such that the produced back-EMF is almost trapezoidal and is supplied with the combined sinusoidal plus third harmonic of currents to produce trapezoidal current. Therefore this motor, while generating the same average torque as an equivalent permanent magnet brushless dc motor, overcomes its disadvantages. It is shown that torque producing and flux producing components of current for this motor can be decoupled by using multiple reference frame transformation. Therefore, Vector control is easily applicable to the motor. This motor has benefits such as high torque density of a BLDC motor below the rated speed and controllability of PMSM above the rated speed and during the field weakening region and simulation and experimental results are provided to prove the validity of the superior performance of this drive.

  • Low costed position sensor or sensorless control method is generally used in the motor control for home appliance because of the material cost and manufacture standard restriction. In conventional sensorless method, the stator resistance and back-EMF coefficient are varied by the motor speed and load torque variation. Therefore, position error occurred when the motor is operated by sensorless control method because of these variations. In this paper, the compensation method is proposed for sensorless position error using 2 hall sensors.

  • Generally, a voltage difference or voltage distortion exists between the reference voltage and the practical voltage applied to a motor in a pulse width modulated(PWM) voltage source inverter(VSI). This voltage distortion varies with the operating conditions such as the temperature, DC link voltage, and phase current level. Also the voltage distortion affects the machine current distortion, torque pulsations, and control performance. In this paper, the voltage distortion in a PWM VSI is analyzed and a new on-line estimation method based on the model reference adaptive system(MRAS) is proposed to compensate the time varying voltage distortion, while considering the parameter variations for a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM). The simulation and experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed voltage difference observer and the compensation method.

  • A multi-phase electric machine has gained distinct interest due to its high reliability compared to a three-phase structure, and in this paper, self and mutual inductances in a five-phase permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) are estimated by an analytical method. Recently, most of high-performance operations are implemented by field oriented control and/or direct torque control, and inductance for those controls is one of the key parameters in the voltage equation of phase windings. Winding function theory (WFT) is employed to calculate the inductance of phase windings, and it is verified that the result of the analytical method has a deviation of approximately 3 % compared to finite element analysis. Finally, in this paper, the way to obtain direct and quadrature inductance values are introduced from the analytical inductance calculated by WFT.

  • This paper presents the speed control of the surface-mounted permanent-magnet synchronous motors (SMPMSM) for the elevator drive. The elevator motor needs to be a compact and slim type. Essentially, the proposed scheme uses a vector control algorithm for a speed and torque control. This system is implemented using a high speed 32-bit DSP (TMS320C31-50), a high-integrated logic device FPGA (EPF10K10-Tl144-3) to design compactly and Inexpensively The proposed scheme is verified through digital simulation and experiments for a three-phase 13.3kW SMPMSM as a MRL(MachineRoomless) elevator motor ill the laboratory. Finally, experiment of the test tower was performed with a 48kW PWM converter-inverter system for a high- speed elevator .

  • This paper presents a capacitor voltage balancing topology using a three-level boost converter (TLBC) for a neutral point clamped (NPC) three-level inverter fed surface permanent magnet synchronous motor drive (SPMSM). It enhanced the performance of the drive in terms of its voltage THD and torque pulsation. The main attracting feature of the proposed control is the boosting of the input voltage and at the same time the balancing of the capacitor voltages. This control also reduces the computational complexity. For the purpose of close loop vector control, a software based cost effective resolver to digital converter RDC-less estimation is implemented to calculate the speed and position. The proposed drive is simulated in the MATLAB/SIMULINK environment and an experimental investigation using dSPACE DS1104 validates the proposed drive system at different operating condition.

  • Permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) have higher torque and superior output power per volume than other types of AC motors. They are commonly used for applications that require a large output power and a wide range of speed. For precise control of PMSMs, knowing the accurate position of the rotor is essential, and normally position sensors such as a resolver or an encoder are employed. On the other hand, the position sensors make the driving system expensive and unstable if the attached sensor malfunctions. Therefore, sensorless algorithms are widely researched nowadays, to reduce the cost and cope with sensor failure. This paper proposes a sensorless algorithm that can be applied to a wide range of speed. The proposed method features a robust operation at low-speed as well as high-speed ranges by employing a gain adjustment scheme and intermittent voltage pulse injection method. In the proposed scheme the position estimation gain is tuned by a closed loop manner to have stable operation in tough driving environment. The proposed algorithm is fully verified by various experiments done with a 1 kW outer rotor-type PMSM.

  • In this study, the sinusoidal-wave driving method, six-step driving method, and twelve-step driving method, which can be used in an inverter for permanent-magnet synchronous motors, were simulated, and the results were compared to review their operating performance. These driving methods were classified according to the electrical conduction angle and phase current of the motor. Conventionally, only the transition control technique between the sinusoidal-wave driving method and six-step driving method was studied for the efficiency of the inverter. In this paper, however, comparative analysis was focused on a variety of transition control applications to use the advantages of each driving method. For this purpose, computer simulations for these driving methods were carried out to obtain the motor torque, speed control characteristics, and THD of the motor phase currents. As a result, the sinusoidal-wave driving method showed the best performance in all respects. The six-step driving method has better speed control characteristics than the twelve-step driving method, and the twelve-step driving method has a lower THD of the motor phase currents than the six-step driving method.

  • This paper presents a vector control implementation for SPMSM(Surface-mounted Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor) using dSPACE 1104 system and MATLAB/SIMULINK. SPMSM can be treated as a DC motor provided that currents of flux and torque component are controlled independently using vector control. Therefore various control algorithms for conventional DC motor control can be adopted to SPMSM. The system is designed to improve set-point tracking capability, fast response, and accuracy In This paper, d-q equivalent modeling of PMSM is derived based on vector control theory. PI controller is used for speed control and decoupling PI controller is used for current control. For the implementation of high performance vector control system, dSPACE 1104 system is used. Experiments were carried out to examine validity of the proposed vector control implementation.
