  • Purpose The present study aimed at assessing the effectiveness of the respiratory gating method used in the flow mode and additional localized respiratory-gated imaging, which differs from the step and go method. Materials and Methods Respiratory gated imaging was performed in the flow mode to twenty patients with lung cancer (10 patients with stable signals and 10 patients with unstable signals), who underwent PET/CT scanning of the torso using Biograph mCT Flow PET/CT at Bundang Seoul University Hospital from June 2016 to September 2016. Additional images of the lungs were obtained by using the respiratory gating method. SUVmax, SUVmean, and Tumor Volume ($cm^3$) of non-gating images, gating images, and additional lung gating images were found with Syngo, bia (Siemens, Germany). A paired t-test was performed with GraphPad Prism6, and changes in the width of the amplitude range were compared between the two types of gating images. Results The following results were obtained from all patients when the respiratory gating method was applied: $SUV_{max}=9.43{\pm}3.93$, $SUV_{mean}=1.77{\pm}0.89$, and $Tumor\;Volume=4.17{\pm}2.41$ for the non-gating images, $SUV_{max}=10.08{\pm}4.07$, $SUV_{mean}=1.75{\pm}0.81$, and $Tumor\;Volume=3.56{\pm}2.11$ for the gating images, and $SUV_{max}=10.86{\pm}4.36$, $SUV_{mean}=1.77{\pm}0.85$, $Tumor\;Volume=3.36{\pm}1.98$ for the additional lung gating images. No statistically significant difference in the values of $SUV_{mean}$ was found between the non-gating and gating images, and between the gating and lung gating images (P>0.05). A significant difference in the values of $SUV_{max}$ and Tumor Volume were found between the aforementioned groups (P<0.05). The width of the amplitude range was smaller for lung gating images than gating images for 12 from 20 patients (3 patients with stable signals, 9 patients with unstable signals). Conclusion In PET/CT scanning using the respiratory gating method in the flow mode, any lesion movements caused by respiration were adjusted; therefore, more accurate measurements of $SUV_{max}$, and Tumor Volume could be obtained from the gating images than the non-gating images in this study. In addition, the width of the amplitude range decreased according to the stability of respiration to a more significant degree in the additional lung gating images than the gating images. We found that gating images provide information that is more useful for diagnosis than the one provided by non-gating images. For patients with irregular signals, it may be helpful to perform localized scanning additionally if time allows.

  • We must precisely investigate the mechanical characters of rock to design rock slope safely and efficiently. But the method of clinometer has some disadvantages. So, we need a new measurement that can replace the method of clinometer. In this study, we analyze the reliability of joint orientation measurements in rock slope using the 3D laser scanner and program Split-FX that is a point cloud data analysis software. We could acquire the 495 pieces joint data through the automatic extraction of features. And we confirmed that there were some errors occurred with ${\pm}4^{\circ}$ of dip and ${\pm}5^{\circ}$ of dip direction. Generally, the method of clinometer has ${\pm}5^{\circ}$ and ${\pm}10^{\circ}$ error ranges of the joint orientation(dip/dip direction) that are the results of the advance research. Therefore, we analyzed the method of 3D laser scanner, and it is found to be efficient, reliable. This method is expected to mend the disadvantages of Clinometer method.

  • Objective: Wheat bran (WB) and rice bran (RB) are the agricultural by-products used as poultry feed in many developing countries. However, their use for poultry feed is limited due to high fiber and the presence of anti-nutritional substances (e.g. ${\beta}-glucans$). The objective of this study was to develop a method to improve the quality of those brans by reducing the fiber content. Methods: A two-step fermentation method was developed where the second fermentation of first fermented dry bran was carried out. Fermentation was performed at a controlled environment for 3 h and 6 h (n = 6). The composition of brans, buffer solution and rumen liquor was maintained in a ratio of 1:2:3, respectively. Brans were analyzed for dry matter, crude fiber (CF), acid detergent fiber (ADF), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), and acid detergent lignin (ADL) content. Celluloses and hemicelluloses were calculated from the difference of ADF-ADL and NDF-ADF, respectively. Samples were compared by two-factor analysis of variance followed by Tukey's multiple comparison tests (p<0.05). Results: CF %, ADF % and cellulose tended to decrease and NDF % and hemicellulose content was reduced significantly (p<0.05). After the 1st fermentation step, NDF decreased $10.7%{\pm}0.55%$ after 3 h vs $17.0%{\pm}0.78%$ after 6 h in case of WB. Whereas, these values were $2.3%{\pm}0.30%$ (3 h) and $7.5%{\pm}0.69%$ (6 h) in case of RB. However, after the 2nd fermentation step, the decrease in the NDF content amounted to $9.1%{\pm}0.72%$ (3 h), $17.4%{\pm}1.13%$ (6 h) and $9.3%{\pm}0.46%$ (3 h), $10.0%{\pm}0.68%$ (6 h) in WB and RB, respectively. Cellulose and hemicellulose content was reduced up to $15.6%{\pm}0.85%$ (WB), $15.8%{\pm}2.20%$ (RB) and $36.6%{\pm}2.42%$ (WB), $15.9%{\pm}3.53%$ (RB), respectively after 2nd fermentation of 6 h. Conclusion: Two-step fermentation process improved the quality of the brans for their use in poultry feed.

  • Recent epidemiological observations suggested beneficial effects of dietary fiber on man's health. The obsective of this study was to obtain the dietary fiber reference data of mushrooms. The dietary fiber contents of six different mushrooms (Cornellus edodes, Auricularia auriculajudae, Gyrophora esculanta, Agaricus bisporus, Pleurotus ostreatus, Collybia velutipes) were analyzed by Southgate method, modified neutral detergent fiber (NDF) method and Food Research Institute (FRI) method. Duplicate sample were used for each determination. The mean values of total dietary fiber by Southgate method, modified NDF method and FRI method were respectively $20.08\pm1.45g$/100g dry weight, $20.24\pm1.85g$/100g dry weight and $21.5\pm2.70g$/100g dry weight. The mean values of all mushroom samples by FRI method were significantly different from the mean values of the samples by modified NDF method and Southgate method. However, there was no difference in the mean values of the samples between modified NDF method and Southgate method. By Southgate method, total dietary fiber of mushrooms composed of 1.7-3.1% soluble fiber, 47.0-66.6% hemicellulose, 28.4-57.7% cellulose and 0.9-3.3% lignin. By modified NDF method, total dietary fiber of mushrooms composed of 61.8-79.1% hemicellulose, 5.4-32.9% cellulose and 4.5- l5.5% lignin. Therefore, dietary fiber contents of mushrooms were mainly hemicellulose. Our values for total dietary fiber for six mushrooms were 2~4 times higher than crude fiber in textbook.

  • Fine structures of some Korean woods were investigated by X-ray diffraction methods. Relative crystallinity measured by the Segal's method and by the area method was $53{\pm}6%$ and $43{\pm}8%$ in softwoods, and $54{\pm}5%$ and $45{\pm}5%$ in hardwoods, respectively. The crystallite dimension in width was $3.11{\pm}0.45nm$ in softwoods and $3.22{\pm}0.25nm$ in hardwoods. In the longitudinal direction, the dimension was $12.79{\pm}0.89nm$ in softwoods and $12.60{\pm}0.72nm$ in hardwoods. The d-spacings of (200) in equatorial and (004) in meridional layers were about 0. 397 run and about. 0.260 nm, respectively. As a result, relative crystallinity, crystallite dimensions and d-spacings of (200) did not show any differences between the softwoods and hardwoods. The ratio of integrated intensities of (002) and (004), however, showed some differences between the softwoods and hardwoods. Namely, it was $0.101{\pm}0.027$ in softwoods and $0.138{\pm}0.037$ in hardwoods.

  • The measurement methods for total nitrogen in wastewater containing a high concentration of nitrogen were evaluated. (1) The UV spectrophotometry, (2) reduction-distillation Kjeldahl, (3) total Kjeldahl nitrogen, and (4) ion chromatography methods were applied. The experimental procedure of the UV spectrophotometric method was simple, but it produced large errors deriving from the dilution of samples and calibration standards. While, the reduction-distillation Kjeldahl method didn't need dilution, but the amount of Devarda's alloy and NaOH lead to large errors up to 50 mg/L. The levels of total nitrogen measured by each method were as follows: reduction-distillation Kjeldahl ($568.6{\pm}38.7mg/L$) > UV spectrophotometry ($527.3{\pm}9.6mg/L$) > total Kjeldahl nitrogen method ($494.7{\pm}21.4mg/L$) > ion chromatography method ($417.9{\pm}7.3mg/L$). Therefore, the reduction-distillation Kjeldahl method is preferred for wastewater with the high concentration of nitrogen. Optimal conditions for each experimental procedure, however, are needed to be confirmed, and the Standard Operation Procedure (SOP) for total nitrogen is required for reliable measurements.

  • In order to identify the characteristics of fine particle emissions from thermal power plants, this study conducted measurement of the primary emission concentration of TPM, PM10 and PM2.5 according to Korea standard test method (ES 01301.1) and ISO 23210 method (KS I ISO 23210). Particulate matters were sampled in total 74 units of power plants such as 59 units of coal-fired power plants, 7 units of heavy oil power plants, 2 units of biomass power plant, and 6 units of liquid natural gas power plants. The average concentration of TPM, PM10, PM2.5 by fuel are 3.33 mg/m3, 3.01 mg/m3, 2.70 mg/m3 in coal-fired plant, 3.02 mg/m3, 2.99 mg/m3, 2.93 mg/m3 in heavy oil plant, 0.114 mg/m3, 0.046 mg/m3, 0.036 mg/m3 in LNG plant, respectively. These results of TPM, PM10 and PM2.5 were satisfied with the standards of fine dust emission allowance in all units of power plants, respectively. Also, this study evaluated the characteristics of fine particle emissions by conditions of power plants including generation sources, boiler types and operation years and calculated emission factors and then evaluated fine particle emissions by sources of electricity generation.

  • Background: For the patient with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease requiring long-term oxygen therapy, oxygen concentrator machines are already widely available for use in home. In this study, we used mongrel dogs as test subjects to compare the functional efficiency and safety of the oxygen concentrator developed by our own research team with those of the imported FORLIFE(TM) machine made by AIRSEP Corp. Method and method: To test mechanical reliability, the concentrations of oxygen delivered were measured after 4 hours of continuous operation. Sixteen mongrel dogs were divided into two equal groups. Mongrel dogs in group A were given oxygen using the imported oxygen concentrator, and those in group B using the machine developed. 5 l/min of oxygen were given, after which vital signs were analyzed, arterial blood gases measured, and blood chemistry tests carried out. Results: After 4 hours of continuous operation, the imported model performed better, giving 98${\pm}$3% oxygen, compared to our model, which gave 91${\pm}$1%. In the animal experiments, oxygen concentrations were measured at the inlet of face mask 1, 2, 3, and 4 hours after continuous administration, and there was no statistically significant difference(repeated measures of analysis of variance p=0.70) between the values of 70.6${\pm}$2.5%, 67.1${\pm}$2.9%, 68.2${\pm}$2.6%, and 64.9${\pm}$3.9% that were measured from group A, and the values of 65.1${\pm}$4.8%, 65.2${\pm}$3.6%, 68.7${\pm}$4.3%, and 66.0${\pm}$5.0% measured from group B. Before oxygen administration, and at 1, 2, 3, and 4 hours after oxygen administration, arterial blood partial pressure of oxygen 87.2${\pm}$2.5 mmHg, 347.4${\pm}$29.3 mmHg, 353.4${\pm}$21.2 mmHg, 343.0${\pm}$28.8 mmHg, and 321.6${\pm}$24.4 mmHg, respectively, were read from group A, which were not statistically different (p=0.24) to the values of 102.5${\pm}$9.6 mmHg, 300.3${\pm}$17.1 mmHg, 321.6${\pm}$23.7 mmHg, 303.4${\pm}$27.4 mmHg, and 273.5${\pm}$25.9 mmHg read from group B. Nonetheless, the arterial blood partial pressure of oxygen values appear to be somewhat higher in dogs that were given oxygen using the imported oxygen concentrator. Conclusions: From these results the prototype oxygen concentrator developed appears to function relatively satisfactorily compared to the imported, established model, but may be criticized for the excessive noise generated and poor long-term endurance or consistency, which need improvement.

  • Purpose $^{99m}Tc-DMSA$ renal scan is a test for the comparison of the function by imaging the parenchyma of the kidneys by the cortex of a kidney and by computing the intake ratio of radiation by the left and right kidney. Since the distance between the kidneys and the bladder is not far given the bodily structure of an infant, the bladder is included in the examination domain. Research was carried out with the presumption that counts of bladder would impart an influence on the kidneys at the time of this renal scan. In consideration of the special feature that only a trace amount of a RI is injected in a pediatric examination, research on the method of injection was also carried out concurrently. Materials and Methods With 34 infants aged between 1 month to 12 months for whom a $^{99m}Tc-DMSA$ renal scan was implemented on the subjects, a Post IMAGE was acquired in accordance with the test time after having injected the same quantity of DMSA of 0.5mCi. Then, after having acquired an additional image by shielding the bladder by using a circular lead plate for comparison purposes, a comparison was made by illustrating the percentile of (Lt. Kidney counts + Rt. Kidney counts)/ Total counts, by drawing the same sized ROI (length of 55.2mm X width of 70.0mm). In addition, in the format of a 3-way stopcock, a Heparin cap and direct injection into the patient were performed in accordance with RI injection methods. The differences in the count changes in accordance with each of the methods were compared by injecting an additional 2cc of saline into the 3-way stopcock and Heparin cap. Results The image prior to shielding of the bladder displayed a kidney intake rate with a deviation of $70.9{\pm}3.18%$ while the image after the shielding of the bladder displayed a kidney intake rate with a deviation of $79.4{\pm}5.19%$, thereby showing approximately 6.5~8.5% of difference. In terms of the injection method, the method that used the 3-way form, a deviation of $68.9{\pm}2.80%$ prior to the shielding and a deviation of $78.1{\pm}5.14%$ after the shielding were displayed. In the method of using a Heparin cap, a deviation of $71.3{\pm}5.14%$ prior to the shielding and a deviation of $79.8{\pm}3.26%$ after the shielding were displayed. Lastly, in the method of direct injection into the patient, a deviation of $75.1{\pm}4.30%$ prior to the shielding and a deviation of $82.1{\pm}2.35%$ after the shielding were displayed, thereby illustrating differences in the kidney intake rates in the order of direct injection, a Heparin cap and the 3-way methods. Conclusion Since a substantially minute quantity of radiopharmaceuticals is injected for infants in comparison to adults, the cases of having shielded the bladder by removing radiation of the bladder displayed kidney intake rates that are improved from those of the cases of not having shielded the bladder. Although there are difficulties in securing blood vessels, it is deemed that the method of direct injection would be more helpful in acquisition of better images since it displays improved kidney intake rate in comparison to other methods.
