This paper presents the synchronous vibration control of a rotor system using an Active Air Bearing(AAB). In order to suppress the synchronous vibration, it is necessary to actively control the air film pressure or the air film thickness. In this study, active pads are used to control the air film thickness. Active pads are supported by the pivots containing piezoelectric actuators and their radial positions can be actively controlled by applying voltage to the actuators. Disturbances and various kinds of external forces can cause the shaft vibration as well as the change of the air film thickness. The dynamic behaviors of a rotary system supported by two tilting-pad gas bearings and its active stabilization using the tilting-pads as actuators are investigated numerically. The PID controller is applied to the tilting-pad gas bearing system with three pads, two of which contain piezoelectric actuators. To test the validity of the theoretical method, the performance of this control method is evaluated through experiments. The experimental results show the effectiveness of the control system for suppressing the unbalanced response of the rigid modes.

A signal conditioning circuit for capacitive displacement sensors was developed using a high frequency modulation/demodulation method, and its performance was evaluated. Since capacitive displacement sensors can achieve high resolution and linearity, they have been widely used as precision sensors within the range of several hundred micrometers. However, they inherently have a limitation in low frequency range and some nonlinearity characteristics and so a specially designed signal conditioning circuit is needed to handle these properties. The developed signal processing circuit consists of three parts: linearization, modulation/demodulation, and nonlinearity compensation. Each part was constructed discretely using several IC chips and passive elements. An evaluation system for precision displacement sensors was developed using a laser interferometer, a precision stage, and a PID position controller. The signal processing circuit was tested using the evaluation system in the respect of resolution, repeatability, linearity, and so on. From the experimental results, we know that a highly linear voltage output can be obtained successfully, which is proportional to displacement and the nonlinearity of output is less than 0.02% of full range. However, in the future, further investigation is required to reduce noise level and phase delay due to a low-pass filter. The evaluation system also can be applied effectively to calibration and evaluation of precision sensors and stages.

This article presents the design of long range navigation (LORAN)-disciplined oscillator (LDO), employing the timing information of the LORAN system, which was developed as a backup system that corrects the vulnerability of the global positioning system (GPS)-based timing information utilization. The LDO designed on the basis of hardware generates a timing source synchronized with reference to the timing information of the LORAN-C receiver. As for the LDO-based timing information measurement, the Kalman filter was applied to estimate the measurement of which variance was minimized so that the stability performance could be improved. The oven-controlled crystal oscillator (OCXO) was employed as the local oscillator of the LDO. The controller was operated by digital proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controlling method. The LDO performance evaluation environment that takes into account the additional secondary factor (ASF) of the LORAN signals allows for the relative ASF observation and data collection using the coordinated universal time (UTC). The collected observation data are used to analyze the effect of ASF on propagation delay. The LDO stability performance was presented by the results of the LDO frequency measurements from which the ASF was excluded.
This thersis presents precise position control emthods of a 3-PRPS in-parallel manipulator for industrial applications such as assembly of highly integrated semiconductors and microsurgery. Since real-time ontrol is one of the most important issues required for industrial application, the experimental hardware is set up with a VME based DSP controller. In the 3-PRPS parallel mainpulator, structurally existing frictiion at three horizontal links considerably degrades the precise position control. In order to compensate the friction of the horizontal links in the joint space, a disturbance compensation usign disturbance and velocity observers has been proposed and investigated. We analyzed the decision method of eigenvalues of the disturbance observer and the effects of the control resulted form tehsystem model errors. Through a series of simulations and experiments, we see that the methods is capable of compensating variations of the robot parameters such as inertia and damping as well as the joint friction. Experiments show that the disturbance compensation method usign disturbance and velocity observer is very effective to compensate the friction. Compared with conventional PID position control, it decreased position errors ina circular motion by approximately 70%.

In this paper, the controller design by coefficient diagram method (CDM) for controlling the trolley position, load-swing angle and hoisting rope length of the overhead crane system simultaneously is proposed. The overhead crane system is a MIMO system consisting of two inputs and three outputs. Its mathematical model is nonlinear with coupling characteristics. This nonlinear model can be approximated to obtain a linear model where the first input mainly affects the trolley position and the load-swing angle while the second input mainly affects the hoisting rope length. In order to utilize the CDM concept for assigning the controllers, namely PID, PD and PI controllers separately, the model is approximated to be three transfer functions in accordance with trolley position, the load-swing angle and the hoisting rope length controls respectively. The satisfied performances of the overhead crane system controlled by the these controllers and fast rejection of the disturbance effect occurred at the trolley position are shown by simulation and experimental results.

This paper proposes a method for measuring friction forces and creating a friction model for a rotary motion control system as well as an autonomous vehicle testbed. The friction forces versus the velocity were measured, and the viscous friction, Coulomb friction, and stiction were identified. With a nominal PID (proportional-integral-derivative) controller, we observed the adverse effects due to friction, such as excessive steady-state errors, oscillations, and limit-cycles. By adding an adequate friction model as part of the augmented nonlinear dynamics of a plant, we were able to conduct a simulation study of a motion control system that well matched experimental results. We have observed that the implementation of a model-based friction compensator improves the overall performance of both motion control systems, i.e., the rotary motion control system and the Altino testbed for autonomous vehicle development. By utilizing a better simulation tool with an embedded friction model, we expect that the overall development time and cost can be reduced.

If hydraulic pump controlled by mechanical type regulator has more than one control function, the construction of regulator will be very complicated and control performance falls drastically. It is difficult to have more than one control function for hydraulic pump controlled by electronic type hydraulic valve due to the inconsistency of controllers. This paper proposes a multi-function control technique which controls continuously flow, pressure and power by using EPPR(Electronic Proportional Pressure Reducing) valve in swash plate type axial piston pump. Nonlinear mathematical model is developed from the continuity equation for the pressurized control volume and the torque balance for the swash plate motion. To simplify the model we make the linear state equation by differentiating the nonlinear model. A reaction spring is installed in servo cylinder to secure the stability of the control system. We analyze the stability and disturbance by using the state variable model. Finally, we review the control performances of flow, pressure and power by tests using PID controller.

This paper presents modal analysis and mean conveying velocity (M.C.V.) control of bowl parts feeder activated by piezoactuators. Bowl parts feeders are being widely used in many industry fields for automatic assembly line. In general, the electromagnet has been and being used as exciting actuator of these vibratory bowl feeders. However, because of complexity of its mechanism and limited capability of the electromagnet actuator, there exist various impending problems such as severe noise, nonlinear motion of parts, passive characteristics and so forth. As one of solutions for these problems, piezoelectric actuators as new actuating technology have been proposed recently to excite the bowl parts feeder. In this paper, modal analysis of the proposed model has been performed to examine the modal characteristics of the model by using commercial FEM software and modeling with respects to MCV is constructed. Finally, MCV of the parts is to be controlled to track the desired one with PID controller.

A precision hi-directional actuator for a high precision leveling system with $Z{\Theta}_x{\Theta}_y$ motions is proposed and designed in this paper. The actuator is composed of a force generation structure, a guide mechanism, and a symmetric structure. At first, its driving force is generated by a change of flux in air gaps by permanent and changeable flux. The permanent flux is generated by a permanent magnet. The changeable flux is created by variable current flowing through coil. The combination of permanent and changeable flux makes various flux densities in air gaps between moving part and fixed yokes. And then, the difference between flux densities in lower and upper gaps creates forces fur the $bi-direction({\pm}z)$ motion. The guide mechanism of this actuator is composed of two circular plates and one shaft. Reducing motions generated by forces except z-motion, these circular plates endow the actuator with high stiffness for fast settling time. And the function of the shaft is to transfer motion to an object. At last, total body has a symmetric structure to be stable on thermal error. The actuator is designed by MAXWELL 2D and ProMECHANICA. The designed actuator is evaluated by 8nm laser doppler vibrometer, dynamic signal analyzer, and simple PID controller.
