  • Surface water is the main drinking water source in Korea. Algal bloom caused by phytoplankton in reservoir is common event in every summer season. To prevent or control the algal blooms, artificial circulation system has been adopted in many reservoirs, including Hoengseung reservoir. Total 7 hydraulic-gun-aerators were installed around the intake tower in Hoengseung reservoir since 2000. This study is to elucidate the effects of hydraulic-gun-aerators on phytoplankton bloom, pH, DO, temperature and evaluate the selective withdrawal and vertical distribution of phytoplankton by means of submersible fluorescence probe, which features high correlation with a standard ISO method (r=0.90, P<0.0001) for chlorophyll-a quantification.

  • The absorption coefficient and backscattering properties of phytoplankton were calculated from the Mie theory. Given a simple case that phytoplankton and mineral particles are the only constitutions in seawater, the reflectance $b_b({\lambda})/[a({\lambda})+b_b({\lambda})]$was analyzed. Then the chlorophyll concentrations were estimated from remote sensing OC2 algorithm. The results show that reflectance in short wavelength region is more sensitive to the Chl variation; High mineral concentrations in seawater have significant influence on the reflectance spectrum; the existence of high mineral concentration may result in the mistake in chlorophyll estimation from OC2 algorithm.

  • The water Quality and phytoplankton communities of the coastal waters of Inchon were Investigated 4 tomes from May, 1995 to January. 1996. The characteristic of the study was shallow muddy bottom onoronment with high SS concentration. The water qualities were belong to the category of I-grade in DO, II to III grade in COD and III-grade In Inorganic nutrients such as T-N and T-p. Total 136 species of shytoplankton were observed in thins study and species richness was on the decrease compared with the results of previous studies. The mean of phytoplankton species diversities was 1.93, decreased in recent years and the value in autumn was slightly higher than that in other seasons.

  • We investigated the interannual relationship between chlorophyll concentrations in the western North Pacific and tropical cyclones (TCs) in the western North Pacific by analyzing data collected for >12 years. Despite the short-term scale (2~3 weeks) in the contribution of tropical cyclones to phytoplankton, the current study revealed that the long-term chlorophyll variability in the western North Pacific is profoundly related to long-term variability in the frequency of TCs. It was also found that the Pacific decadal oscillation (PDO) tends to control such relationships between the 2 bio-physical systems. This result suggests a significant climatic relationship between TC activity and marine phytoplankton, and also suggests the possibility of more accurate estimations of primary production in the western North Pacific.

  • The productivity of summer phytoplankton communities in Lake Hwajinpo, Lake Yongrang and Lake Changja were studied by measuring vertical variation of chlorophyll a amounts. The author also classified the lake types on the basis of the amount of chlorophyll in the lake water. And in Lake Changja, the seasonal changes of stratification of chlorophyll were studies. In Lake Hwajinpo, the productive structure of the phytoplankton community in summer was found to be L-shaped and of the mesotrophic type. In Lake Yongrang, the productive structure of the phytoplankton community in summer was alo L-shaped and of the mesotrophic type. And maximum chlorophyll layer was near the lake bottom below the compensation depth. In Lake Changja, the structure of phytoplankton community in summer was reversed L-shaped and of the eutrophic type, with the maximum chlorophyll layer just below the surface. The vertical distribution of chlorophyll amounts as a measure of the productive structure almost always formed a stratum distribution except in September and sometimes in May, in Lake Changja. In September homogeneous distribution was observed.

  • An investigation was conducted to determine limiting nutrients in the bay systems of the southern coastal area of Korea. The elemental composition of C, N, and P in suspended particulate matter was monitored nearly monthly in Chinhae and Koje Bays and seasonally in Deukryang Bay for 2 years. Atomic C:N ratio in particulate matter ranges from 4.3 to 9.6, typical of marine phytoplankton. C:P and N:P ratios vary from the Redfield ratio to 229 (C:P) and 37 (N:P). A constant C:N ratio of 6.87 from regression of particulate C and N concentrations demonstrates that the particulate matter in the systems originates from primary production. C:P and N:P ratios from regression of C on P and N on P are well associated with changes in salinity. The low N:P ratio of 13.1 implies N limitation in the environments of the systems. This seems to result from the low N:P ratio of nutrients released across sediment-water interface. Phytoplankton response, expressed here as the increase of chlorophyll a, to N addition also verifies N limitation for phytoplankton communities. In heavy rainfall season (from June to September), the addition of excessive N via streams into the stratified coastal water proliferates phytoplankton greatly. During the phytoplankton blooms, C:P and N:P ratios are much higher than the Redfield ratio, implying P limitation. This results from the high N:P ratio in nutrients supplied from stream waters. Strong stratification during the blooms also interrupts the supply of nutrients, particularly p, from bottom waters. Dependent upon precipitation, this tendency shows great inter-annual variation.

  • Qualitative and quantitative phytoplankton samples collected during a cruise in the southeastern sea of Korea in September 1981, were analysed. A total of 185 species of phytoplankters were identified in the present study. Of the numbers 14 species of diatoms and 56 dinoflagellate forms were found. The rest were 3 silicoslagellate forms, a cryptomonad and a euglenoid each. On the bases of the analyses of the phytoplankton communities, two vegetation areas were recognized. It is demonstrated that the extent of each vegetation area largely depends on hydrographical features. In southeastern coastal waters, the vegetation was fairly rich, and consisted of small celled diatoms and minute flagellates. In the northern part of the area, abundant phytoplanktons were present consisting of various diatoms and dimofalgellates. The size of standing stock of phytoplankton was compared with hydrography and the specific composition of phytoplankton. The importance of mixing between the Tsushima warm current water and North Korean cold water in distributing phytoplankton stocks was stressed.
