Survey on the Precipitation Component in Iri Area of Chonbuk Province (전북(全北) 이리지역(裡里地域)의 강수성분(降水成分) 조사(調査))

  • This study was carried out to investigate the deposition aspect of acid precipitation in rural area of Chonbuk province by analysis of the chemical components in the precipitation at National Honam Agricultural Experiment Station, RDA in the suburbs of Iri from Jan. to Dec. in 1992. The results are summarized as follows: 1. The frequency of acid precipitation was 82.5% in 1992 and the month of the lowest frequency of 17% was June. 2. The pH range of the most precipitation amount was pH $4.5{\sim}5.0$ of 54.0% and the amount and ratio of the precipitation below pH 4.0 were 9.6 mm and 1.1%, respectively. 3. The seasonal acidity of precipitation was Summer(4.78)>Fall(4.59)>Spring(4.52)>Winter(4.16). 4. The components showed significant correlation with pH value were $SO_4^{2-}$ and $NO_3$ and the equivalence ratio between two components was 2.85 : 1. 5. The order of the major ion concentration in the precipitation was $SO_4^{2-}$>$NH_4^+$>$Cl^-$>$Ca^{2+}$>$NO_3^-$>$Na^+$>$H^+$>$K^+$>$Mg^{2+}$ and the equivalence ratio of total anion to cation was 1.20. 6. Deposition amount of nitrogen ($NO_3-N$ + $NH_4-N$) and potassium ($K_2O$) were 1.19 and 0.53 kg/l0a/year, respectively.

Effects of Major Phenolic Acids Identified from Barley Residues on the Germination of Paddy Weeds (보리 잔여물(殘餘物)속에 함유(含有)된 주요(主要) Phenolic Acids가 논 잡초(雜草) 발아(發芽)에 미치는 영향(影響))

  • Effects of major phenolic acids identified from barley residues (straw, root) on the germination of rice and 3 paddy weeds such as Echinochloa crusgalli, Cyperus serotinus, and Potamogeton distintus were evaluated to obtain the basic informations on the development of naturally occurring herbicides. The predominant phenolic compounds extracted from barley residues in both straw and root were identified as p-coumaric, p-hydroxybenzoic, ferulic, vanillic, and salicylic acids by means of paper chromatography. Total phenol content of barley straw and root at the harvesting stage was 0.169% and 0.127% per dry weight, respectively. During the decomposing process, total phenol content slightly increased and then decreased. The germination of test plants was inhibited by treatments of 4 major authentic phenolic acids identified, most significantly on rice, and less on E. crusgalli, and C. serotinus. P. distintus, however, was markedly stimulated by them as the concentration increased, and then sprouted buds of pondweeds were changed to dark brownish color, resulting in the death as the treatment prolonged. The greater inhibitory effect appeared on shoot growth rather than germination. The aqueous extracts of barley residues showed the similar inhibitory effect on the germination and shoot growth of rice and three paddy weeds as the treatments of 4 authentic phenolic acids.

Quality Control of Tungsten-188/Rhenium-188 Generator (Tungsten-188/Rhenium-188 발생기의 정도관리)

  • Purpose: For the purpose of using Re-188 as a therapeutic radionuclide, we performed the quality control of the W-188/Re-188 generator system. Materials and Methods: Several quality control tests of the Re-188 eluate from generator were carried out for about 300 days. After elution of Re-188 with normal saline (20 ml), chromatogram and gamma-ray spectrum of Re-188 eluate were obtained. The presence of aluminum which was derived from the alumina bed of the generator was detected by using aluminum ion indicator kit. Re-188 eluate was allowed to decay for several days, and then W-188 breakthrough in the Re-188 eluate was measured by detecting gamma-ray at 227 keY and 290 keV. The pH and the pyrogenicity of the eluate were checked. The Re-188 bolus was concentrated with ion exchange columns. Results: The radioactivity of Re-188 eluate from the generator was $67.4{\pm}7.0%$ of W-188 during 270 days, and it was highest at third day after previous elution. Radiochemical purity of Re-188 eluate obtained from chromatogram was higher than 99%. Gamma-ray spectrum of Re-188 eluate showed a peak at 155 keV. Aluminum ion and W-188 contamination were not detected. The PH of Re-188 eluate was 3 and the concentration yield was 85%. Conclusion: Our experiments and results on quality control tests of Re-188 eluate from W-188/Re-188 generator may be useful for setting W-188/Re-188 generator in hospitals.

Effects of Ammonium, Nitrite and Calcium Compounds Affecting to Germination and Mycelial Growth of Phytophthora capsici Causing Red Pepper Fruit Rot (암모니움, 아초산염(亞硝酸鹽)과 칼슘 화합물(化合物)이 고추 역병균(疫病菌)(Phytophthora capsici)의 발아(發芽)와 균사생장(菌絲生長)에 미치는 효과)

  • Effect of suppression for zoosporangial germination and mycelial growth of Phyto­phthora capsici causing red pepper fruit rot, was carried out in vitro test by using $NH_4OH$ and $KNO_2$, as ammonium/ammonia, nitrite/nitrous acid and $CaCl_2$, as calcium ion. Results of in vitro tests with $NH_4OH$, $KNO_2$, and $CaCl_2$, mol solutions demonstrated that zoosporangial germination of P. capsici was inhibited about 15 to 50% compared with control, according to $NH_3$, HNO as nonionized form and $Ca^{+2}$ ions. Ammonia concentration$(NH_3)$ was proportionally increased by high pH level and mol concentration, whereas low pH and high mol concentration showed rather higher concentration of $HNO_2$. Ammonia were more toxic at pH 8 than at pH 7 under the same concentration, while nitrous acid$(HNO_2)$ was more toxic than at pH 8. The zoosporangial germination inhibition in the ammonium/ammonia and nitrite/nitrous acid solutions demonstrated that $NN_3$, and $HNO_2$, were primarily responsible for the inhibition at lower concentration and mor" toxic by increasing concentration. $Ca^{+2}$ ions showed that zoosporangial germination was inhibitory by high pH level and increasing mol concentration in comparison with buffer conlrol. pH levels affected to mycelial growth of the fungus, and especially, high pH caused rather retardation of mycelial growth. There was no definite inhibitory response of mycelial growth at various degree concentrations of the toxicant solutions.

  • Some experiments on the citric acid production were carried out from soluble starch and molasses as raw materials. When soluble starch was used as substrate for the fermentation of citric acid by the strain M-80 which had assimilating ability of soluble starch in surface culture, the optimal culture media was 120g of soluble starch, 3.0g of (N $H_4$)$_2$S $O_4$, 2.0g of K $H_2$P $O_4$, 0.2g of MgS $O_4$.7$H_2O$, 1.5mg of F $e^{++}$, 1mg of Z $n^{++}$ and 20ml of methanol were added to 1 liter and optimal pH was 5.5. In about 8 days 61.8mg/ml of citric acid was produced. When treated molasses with potassium ferrocyanide was used as substrate for the fermentation of citric acid by the strain of M-315, the optimal condition in surface culture was 250g of molasses, 0.3g of N $H_4$N $O_3$, 0.05g of K $H_2$P $O_4$, 0.01g of MgS $O_4$.7$H_2O$, 0.5g of Potassium ferrocyanide and 30ml of methanol were added to 1.0 liter. On the other hand, the optimal condition in submersed culture was 250g of molasses, 0.3g of N $H_4$N $O_3$, 0.1g of K $H_2$P $O_4$, 0.01g of MgS $O_4$.7$H_2O$, 0.5g of potassium ferrocyanide, and 30m1 of methanol were added to 1.0 liter and optimal pH was all 5.0. After 9 days culture, 69.4mg/ ml, 39.6mg/ml of citric acid were separately produced in surface and submerged culture media.dia.

The Study on Absorption of $Cd^{2+}$ and $Pb^{2+}$ by Persicaria thunbergii and Rumex crispus, and Their Phytochelatin (고마리와 소리쟁이에 의한 $Cd^{2+}$$Pb^{2+}$의 흡수 및 phytochelatin에 관한 연구)

  • When Persicaria thunbergii and Rumex crispus were treated with Cd($NO_3$)$_2$ and Pb($NO_3$)$_2$ of 5 or 10 mM for 5 days, the amount of bioaccumulation of $Pb^{2+}$ in the leaf of P. thunbergii was 2.87-8.08$\mu\textrm{g}$/g and that of $Cd^{2+}$ was 0.82-2.79$\mu\textrm{g}$/g. In the case of P. thunbergii, the concentration of $Pb^{2+}$ in the leaf was higher than that of $Cd^{2+}$. On the other hand, in R. crispus, the concentration of $Cd^{2+}$ and $Pb^{2+}$ were similar as follows ; 1.49$\mu\textrm{g}$/g in $Cd^{2+}$ 5mM, 2.90$\mu\textrm{g}$/g in Cd2+ 10mM, 1.83$\mu\textrm{g}$/g in $Pb^{2+}$ 5mM and 2.73$\mu\textrm{g}$/g in $Pb^{2+}$ 10mM. The remaining rate of heavy metals and the variation of pH in the cultured soil decreased as compared with control (100 % and pH 6.48) after 5 days as follows; to 77.l% and pH 6.39 in $Cd^{2+}$ 5mM, 90.2% and pH 5.79 in $Cd^{2+}$ 10 mM, 81.1% and pH 6.00 in $Pb^{2+}$ 5mM, and 85.7% and pH 5.80 in $Pb^{2+}$ 10 mM. The result of size exclusion chromatography, several phytochelatins were seperated from the extract of the leaf of both plants treated with heavy metals. The molecular mass of these phytochelatins were estimated as follows; in the case of P. thunbergii, about 4,300-8,600 da by $Cd^{2+}$ and about 3,200-9,700 da by $Pb^{2+}$, and in R. crispus, about 4,300 da by $Cd^{2+}$ and about 3,200-7,500 da by $Pb^{2+}$. Toxicity of Persistent Organic Pollutants, PAHs and TBT, in Zooplankton and Influence on Their Viability (동물플랑크톤에 대한 지속성 유기오염물질 PAHs와 TBT의 독성 및 생존능력에 미치는 영향)

  • We conducted three experiments to estimate the toxicity of POPs (persistent organic pollutants) on two copepod species (Acartia erythraea and A. omorii) and Artemia sp.; (1) 48 h-LC$_{50}$ of A. omorii with the five PAHs [polycyelic aromatic hydrocarbons anthracene, benzo〔a〕pyrene, fluoranthene, phenanthrene, pyrene〕 which were often detected in the Gwangyang Bay, (2) toxicity of benzo〔a〕pyrene and TBT on Artemia in different temperatures (1$0^{\circ}C$, 15$^{\circ}C$, 2$0^{\circ}C$), (3) effects of benzo〔a〕pyrene and TBT on egg Production rate, hatching rate and fecal Pellet Production of two copepod species (A. erythraea and A. omorii) fed on Heterocapsa triquetra (dinoflagellate) exposed in benzo〔a〕pyrene. Toxic chemicals which were most effective to A. omorii were flueranthene (48 h-LC$_{50}$ 19.20 $\mu\textrm{g}$ L$^{-1}$ ) and benzo〔a〕pyrene (48 h-LC$_{50}$ 29.89 $\mu\textrm{g}$ L$^{-1}$ ). The toxi- city of chemicals to Artemia increased when temperature increased. The toxicity of TBT was about 100 times higher than that of benzo〔a〕pyrene at 15$^{\circ}C$. Food materials (Heterocapsa triquetra) exposed in benzo〔a〕pyrene, affected negatively the rate of egg production, hatching rate and the fecal pellet production of the copepods at the high concentration. It is suggested that an increase in the concentration of benzo〔a〕pyrene might offset the production of copepods in marine ecosystems. This study suggests that copepods may be used as n indicator for early warning of the risk of POPs in marine ecosystems.

The Effect of Addition of Egg Yolk and Sucrose on the pH and Specific Gravity for Heated Egg Albumen (난백의 가열처리에 있어서 난황과 자당 첨가가 pH 및 비중의 변화에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was divided into experiment I(129g egg-albumen plus 150g sucrose) and experiment II(161g egg-albumen plus 150g sucrose) which were subdivided into groups treated with 0, 8.71, 17.43 and 26.149 egg yolk. These experiments were incubated in a shaking water bath(5$0^{\circ}C$) with a speed of 92(turnaround) per minute for a period of times. The pH and specific gravity were measured after 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 hour incubations. The results obtained were as follows: 1. The pH and specific gravity were steadily increased by shaking time, but variably was influenced by the amount of egg yolk and egg-albumen. 2. In the groups treated with egg-albumen, egg yolk, and sucrose of experiments I and II, pH was increased by the amount of egg-albumen in conjunction with shaking time, but specific gravity was decreased. 3. Ten hours after shaking maximum pH 8.60 was shown in the groups treated with 161g egg-albumen : however, in :he groups treated with 129g egg-albumen the maximum pH 8.39 was shown 12 hours after shaking. The different time exhibited maximum pH resulted from the amount of egg-albumen used. 4. The pH specific gravity were higher in the ,groups treated without egg yolk than in the groups with egg yolk. 5. In the experiment I which was added four levels of egg yolk to 1509 of sucrose and 129g of egg albumen, specific gravity(Table 2) had a high (r=0.9692$^{* *}$) correlation with pH (Table 1) and the regression equation between specific gravity and pH (X) was Y=0.050+0.145x. 6. In the experiment II which was added four levels of egg yolk to 150g of sucrose and 161g of egg albumen, specific gravity(Table 4) had a high (r=0.8963$^{* *}$) correlation with pH (Table 3) and the regression equation between specific gravity and pH (X) was Y=0.294+0.110X.10X.

Hydrogeochemistry of Some Abandoned Metal Mine Creeks in the Hwanggangri Mining District, Korea : A Preliminary Study (황강리 광화대에 분포하는 일부 폐금속 광산수계의 수리지구화학적 특성 : 예비연구)

  • Hydrogeochemical variation and environmental isotope at the some abandoned metal mine (Sanggok, Keumsil, Jangpung and Samdeok) creeks of the Hwanggangri mining district were carried out based upon the physicochemical properties for surface water collected of February in 1998. Hydrogeochemical composition of the all water samples are characterized by the relatively significant enrichment of Ca$^{2}$, alkaline ions, N $O_3$$^{-}$ and Cl$^{-}$ in normal surface water, whereas the surface waters near the mining area are relatively enriched in Ca$^{2+$, Mg$^{2+}$, heavy metals. HC $O_3$$^{-}$ and S $O_4$$^{2-}$. Surface waters of the mining creek have low pH, high EC and extremely high concentrations of TDS compared with surface water of the non-mining creeks. The range of $\delta$D and $\delta$$^{18}$O values (SMOW) in the waters are shown in -65.0 to-71.2$\textperthousand$ and -9.1 to-10.2$\textperthousand$. The d($\delta$D-$\delta$$^{18}$O) value with those of water samples ranged from 7.3 to 10.9. These $\delta$D and $\delta$$^{18/}$ of the acid mine water are more heavy values than those of surface water. The values have revealed the positive correlation between isotopic compositions and major elements, because those $\delta$D and $\delta$$^{18}$O values increase with increasing TDS. HC $O_3$$^{-}$ , S $O_4$$^{2-}$ and Ca$^{2+}$ concentration. Using WATEQ4F, saturation index of albite calcite, dolomite and mostly clay minerals in water of the mining area show undersaturated and progressively evolved toward the equilibrium condition due to fresh water mixing, however, surface waters of the non-mining area are nearly saturated and/or supersaturated. Geochemical modeling showed that mostly toxic heavy metals within water in the mining creek may exist largely in the from of metal-sulfate (MS $O_4$$^{2-}$), free metal (M$^{2+}$/), C $O_3$$^{-}$ and/or OH$^{-}$ complex ions. Based on the geology, water chemistry and environmental istopic data the water compositions from the Sanggok and Keumsil mine creek (consist mainly of Cambro-Ordovician carbonate rocks of the Cho-seon Supergroup) show higher PH, Ca$^{2+}$, Mg$^{2+}$ , HC $O_3$$^{-}$ and more heavy $\delta$D and $\delta$$^{18}$O values than those from the Jangpung and Samdeok mine creek (consist of age -unknown metasedimentary rocks of the Ogcheon Supergroup and/or Jurassic grani-toids), but each of these waters represents a similar hydrogeochemical evolution path by the mine water mixing.

Studies on the Solubility Phenomenon and Activities of Silk Cocoon Sericin through the Filature Water Conditions. (제사용수의 수질이 견층세리신의 용해에 미치는 거동구명에 관한 연구)

  • This study was carried out ill an attempt to investigate the properties and activities of sericin obtained from silk cocoon shells in silk reeling water through various instrumental analyses. In addition, the effects of the characteristics in sericin solubility on the reeling process and silk qualities were also studied on the basis of tile above conditions. The results obtained are as follows: I. The sericin properties and activities through various analytical instruments. 1. The water solubility of each amino acid such as serine, glycine. glutamic and aspartic acids against the pH modified water by using automatic amino acid analyzer, showed the lowest solubility at PH 5, but it increased according to drifting toward the alkalinity. 2. When the obtained sericin particles by water pH variation were observed with the electronic microscope, it was found for the sericin Particles to expand in the alkaline regions. 3. The IR spectrum results showed the differences among the pH modified sericin solutions at the range of 2,100cm-1 and 1.890cm-1 of wave number. 4. The existence of sericin with in silk fabrics made differences in the X-ray interference intencity, that is, the non-degummed fabrics had the interference peak at 2$\theta$=14$^{\circ}$, 17$^{\circ}$, 24$^{\circ}$, and the degummed ones had it at 2$\theta$=17$^{\circ}$, 18$^{\circ}$, 20$^{\circ}$, 23$^{\circ}$, 26$^{\circ}$. II. The results of sericin solubility for silk reeling process. 1. The sericin solubility and swelling had a tendency to increase up with high M-alkalinity and pH value of water. But in case of acidity. water hardness and concentration of ethylene glycol were high, the sericin solubility and swelling were decreased. 2. With the filature experiments, the best conditions of filature orator are summarized as fellows ; a. pH; 6.9${\pm}$0.2 d. acidity; below10ppm b. total hardness; 55:5ppm e. Fe ion; none c. M-alkalinity; 40${\pm}$10ppm
