Plywood, which is created by bonding an odd number of thin veneers perpendicular to the grain orientation of an adjacent layer, was developed to supplement the weak points such as contraction and expansion of conventional wood materials. With structural merits such as strength, durability, and good absorption against impact loads, plywood has been adopted as a structural material in the insulation system of a membrane type liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier. In the present study, as an attempt to resolve recent failure problems with plywood in an LNG insulation system, conventional PF (phenolic-formaldehyde) resin plywood and its alternative MUF (melamine-urea-formaldehyde) resin bonded plywood were investigated by performing material bending tests at ambient ($20^{\circ}C$) and cryogenic ($-163^{\circ}C$) temperatures to understand the resin and grain effects on the mechanical behavior of the plywood. In addition, the failure characteristics of the plywood were investigated with regard to the grain orientation and testing temperature.
This research was carried out to examine physical and mechanical properties of clay-woodceramics which were carbonized for 3 hours in a special furnace from 3 layers-clay-woodparticleboard made from pallet waste wood, phenol formaldehyde resin(hereafter PF, Non volatile content 52%, resin content 30%) and clay(10%, 20% and 30%). Carbonization temperature was 400℃, 600℃ and 800℃. The results are summarized as follows: 1. The higher the carbonization temperature, the higher the dimensional shrinkage and the lower the carbonization yield ratio. But the higher the clay addition, the lower the dimensional shrinkage and the higher carbonization yield ratio. 2. The higher the carbonization temperature, the higher the water absorption and the density. The higher the clay content, the higher the density. 3. The higher the carbonization temperature, the higher the bending Modulus of Rupture and bending Modulus of Elasticity.
Microporous carbons with narrow pore size distribution have been successfully synthesized by using hydrolyzed and calcined silica as templates and phenol formaldehyde (pf) resin as carbon precursor. Phenol formaldehyde-silica micro composites were prepared by solution route. Subsesequently, silica templates were removed by HF leaching. Resulting carbons were steam activated. The porous carbons were characterized by nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherm, SEM, FTIR analysis, iodine adsorption, thermogravimetry analysis, etc. Adsorption isotherms show that the porous carbon prepared from calcined silica as templates are microporous with 88% pores of size <2 nm porosity and are of type I isotherm, while porous carbon prepared by using hydrolyzed silica are microporous with 89% microporosity, shows hysteresis loop at high relative pressure indicating the presence of some mesoporosity in samples. The microporosity in porous carbon materials has a bearing on the nature of silica templates used for pore formation.
This study was carried out to examine the possibility to replace imported wheat flour with taro. Taro and wheat flour were used for the extenders after oven drying($100{\pm}3^{\circ}C$)and pulverized into 80-100mesh minute powder by laboratory willey mill. Urea- and phenol-formaldehyde resin adhesives were used for plywood manufacture, and the extending materials mixed with the extension at the ratio of 10, 20, 30, and 50% to each resin solution. The results obtained at this study were summarized as follows; 1) In dry and wet shear strength of urea-formaldehyde resin adhesive, taro showed very excellent bonding strength compared with wheat flour in all extending ratio. Therefore taro showed the possibility that be usable to taro in place of wheat flour. 2) In dry and wet shear strength of phenol-formaldehyde resin adhesive, in general, wheat flour showed higher bonding strength than taro. But in dry shear strength, taro showed higher shear strength than wheat flour in 30 and 50% extension.
Hollow silicon/carbon (H-Si/C) composites as anode materials for lithium ion batteries were investigated to overcome the large volume expansion. H-Si/C composites were prepared as follows; hollow $SiO_2\;(H-SiO_2)$ was prepared by adding $NaBH_4$ to $SiO_2$ synthesized using $st{\ddot{o}}ber$ method followed by magnesiothermic reduction and carbonization of phenolic resin. The H-Si/C composites were analyzed by XRD, SEM, BET and EDX. To improve the capacity and cycle performance, the electrochemical characteristics of H-Si/C composites synthesized with various $NaBH_4$ contents were investigated by charge/discharge, cycle, cyclic voltammetry and impedance tests. The coin cell using H-Si/C composite ($SiO_2:NaBH_4=1:1$ in weight) in the electrolyte of $LiPF_6$ dissolved in organic solvents (EC : DMC : EMC = 1 : 1 : 1 vol%) has better capacity (1459 mAh/g) than those of other composition coin cells. It is found that the coin cell ($SiO_2:NaBH_4=1:1$ in weight) has an excellent capacity retention from 2nd cycle to 40th cycle.
Si/C/CNF composites as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries were examined to improve the capacity and cycle performance. Si/C/CNF composites were prepared by the fabrication process including the synthesis and magnesiothermic reduction of SBA-15 to obtain Si/MgO by ball milling and the carbonization of phenol resin with CNF and HCl etching. Prepared Si/C/CNF composites were then analysed by BET, XRD, FE-SEM and TGA. Among SBA-15 samples synthesized at reaction temperatures between 50 and $70^{\circ}C$, the SBA-15 at $60^{\circ}C$ showed the largest specific surface area. Also the electrochemical performances of Si/C/CNF composites as an anode electrode were investigated by constant current charge/discharge test, cyclic voltammetry and impedance tests in the electrolyte of LiPF6 dissolved in mixed organic solvents (EC : DMC : EMC = 1 : 1 : 1 vol%). The coin cell using Si/C/CNF composites (Si : CNF = 97 : 3 in weight) showed better capacity (1,947 mAh/g) than that of other composition coin cells. The capacity retention ratio decreased from 84% (Si : CNF = 97 : 3 in weight) to 77% (Si : CNF = 89 : 11 in weight). It was found that the Si/C/CNF composite electrode shows an improved cycling performance and electric conductivity.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the amount of marginal microleakage of 2 light curable GI cements(Fuji II LC & VariGlass), which contain some resin components. 4 volunteers kept on acrylic resin plates, which contained dentin disks with cavities filled with test materials for 2 weeks. The time when polishing was done(5 minutes and 24 hours after filling) and the use of protective agents were varied, so 8 groups with each 6 specimens were tested. After having specimens(disks with cavities filled with materials) penetrated with 1% Methylene Blue solution, specimens were stored in 40% nitric acid solution for 4 days to extract adsorbed dye material. Supernatants of centrifuged samples were diluted 5 times and Spectrophotometer was used to determine the degree of absorption. Dye concentration was calculated through the pre-obtained Linear Regression Curve. The results were as follows. 1. The best result was seen in groups (PF24, PV24) which were protected and polished 24 hours later and the opposite phenomenon was seen in groups(NF24, NV24) which were held without protection and polished 24 hours later. Groups polished S minutes later showed moderate leakage pattern. 2. Groups polished 5 minutes later showed similar leakage amount irrespective of using of protective agent. But statistically insignificant lower values were seen in VariGlass than in Fuji II LC groups, So It was considered that VariGlass may be more resistant to early moisture attack than Fuji II LC. 3. In groups polished 24 hours later, there was no significant difference between materials but was definitely significant difference according to the use of protective agent. If the cement in which polishing will be done 24 hours later, Protective agent should be used to cover the surface.
This research was carried out to examine the properties of fancy cherry veneer overlaid on the PF resin bonded Meranti plywood floor, which 2.5% green tea leaf powder was applied in the UV varnishes and the adhesives for scavenging the volatile organic compounds. The results were as follows: 1. The various properties of the treated samples, such as density, moisture content, thickness swelling, bending strength(MOR), adhesion shear strength, surface abrasion, curling, cyclic delamination test with boiling water, boiling property, cold-resistance and heat resistance, acid resistance and alkali resistance, and anti-contamination property showed no significant difference between the properties of the control samples. 2.5% green tea leaf powder treated floor gave a little better results than the control for surface scratch test. 2. In case of QUV and weathering test, no difference between the treated sample and control was found. 3. The floor was discolored by adding 10% green tea leaf powder to UV coating, and the floor was also discolored to light green during by the soaking test. The color of floor was not changed up to 5% addition level.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the properties of bamboo oriented strand board (B-OSB) from andong (Gigantochloa psedoarundinacea) and betung (Dendrocalamus asper) with and without steam treatment. Strands were steam-treated at $126^{\circ}C$ for 1 h under 0.14 MPa pressure. The extractive content of bamboo strands before and after steam treatment were determined according to a standard (TAPPI T 204 om-88). Three-layer B-OSB with the core layer perpendicular to the surface and back layers were formed and binded with 8% of phenol formaldehyde (PF) resin with the addition of 1% of wax. The evaluation of physical and mechanical properties of the boards were conducted in accordance with the JIS A 5908:2003 standard. The results showed that steam treatment of bamboo strands significantly reduced the extractive content. Steam treatment tended to increase the dimensional stability and mechanical properties of B-OSB from andong and betung. The results showed that the dimensional stability and bending strength of B-OSB from betung was higher than those of andong. The internal bond strength of B-OSB from andong was higher than betung owing to a greater amount of extractives dissolved during the steam treatment.
Adhesives derived from renewable resources allow wood panel producers to make lower cost alternatives to formaldehyde-based adhesive resins. Among them, adhesive components extracted from industrial by-products or wastes are the most important research fields in the efficient utilization of waste and cost reduction. In our study, the rapeseed flour, which is a by product from the production of biodiesel extracted from rapeseed, was introduced to develop alternative adhesives for the production of wood flooring. The rapeseed flour was hydrolyzed with 1% sodium hydroxide solution and PF prepolymers were prepared with 3-molar ratios, 1.8, 2.1 and 2.4. The linear fracture mechanics was introduced to evaluate the glue bond quality in wood flooring composed of fancy-veneered and plywood, and the formaldehyde emission and adhesive penetration were also investigated. The formaldehyde emissions of wood flooring met the requirement of the standard of $SE_0$ specified in the KS standard. The rapeseed flour adhesive penetrated sufficiently into the vessel elements and lumens in fancy veneer and plywood and gave strong bond quality to the wood flooring. The fracture mechanics was introduced to evaluate the adhesive joint between fancy veneer and plywood. The critical stress intensity factor ($K_{IC}$) of boliva overlayed wood flooring was increased with increasing molar ratio and this was the same tendency in oak overlayed wood flooring. From the results, the formulated adhesives were efficiently used to bond fancy veneer onto the plywood to make wood flooring and showed a potential to be used as a component of environmentally friendly adhesive resin systems for production of flooring.
