  • Polyethylene glycol esters (PEG-esters) were synthesized by condensation reaction of dicarboxylic acid such as adipic acid and sebacic acid and several PEGs. The PEG-esters were analyzed by FT-IR, $^1H-NMR$ and HPLC for structure analysis, and by GPC for molecular weight. Through the analysis of surface tension, critical micelle concentration (CMC), aluminum contact angle of water solution containing the PEG-ester, the synthetic PEG-esters are proven to exhibit surfactant properties. The surface tension ranged from 45 to 50 dyn/cm depended on the concentration and structures of the PEG-esters. The surface tension of PEG-esters with sebacic acid moiety and short polyoxyethylene unit resulted in lower value than that of PEG-ester with adipic acid moiety and long polyoxyethylene unit. The CMC of water solution containing 2.5 wt% PEG-ester with sebacic acid moiety estimated at $0.9{\times}10^{-5}{\sim}5.3{\times}10^{-3}mol/L$ depended on the structures of PEG-esters. The CMC of PEG-esters with long polyoxyethlene unit showed a higher value than that of PEG-esters with short polyoxyethylene unit. Meanwhile, the CMC of PEG-esters with adipic acid moiety was not distinct due to their high hydrophilic character. As the results of contact angle and cutting time aginst aluminum, the contact angle ranged from $45^{\circ}$ to $53^{\circ}$ depended on the concentration of PEG-esters. The cutting time of aluminum showed the shortest value at CMC, but the longest value above CMC. This fact indicates that the CMC of PEG-esters is a very important factor in drilling aluminum.

  • The conservation has been conducted for the fragments of an wooden boat in the Neolithic Age, excavated from Bibong-ri, Changnyeong, Korea. The vacuum-freeze drying have been applied to mostly to the small relics, such as wooden lacquerwares or small wooden goods etc.. Therefore, the large objects like a wooden boats have been treated almost by air-drying after impregnation with aqueous PEG solution. The air-drying is needed to impregnate with PEG aqueous solution during long period and run the risk of the fault generation. This report explain an example adapted for the fragments of the wooden boat by humidity-controlled drying(HCD) with slow adjusting moisture content. We did the chemical pre-treatment, PEG aqueous solution. The concentration of the aqueous solution was increased gradually from 10% to 80%. After the impregnation, the objects were dried by the HCD. The dimensional stability of the fragments after treatment was good.

  • The synthesis of poly(N,N-dimethylamino ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA)-block-poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)) copolymer has been carried out and the block copolymer was characterized by FT-IR, DSC, and $^1$H-NMR. The formation of polymeric nanoaggregation was observed in the solution mixture of poly(DMAEMA) -block-PEG copolymer and poly (ethyl acrylamide) (EAAm) due to the intermolecular interaction via hydrogen bond between DMAEMA and poly(EAAm). The formation of polymeric nanoaggregation was observed above critical micelle concentration (CMC).

  • We have synthesized various types of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)-ibuprofen conjugates by the nucleophilic substitution of bromo-terminated PEG with ibuprofen-Cs salt; PN (Pluronic) was also used in place of PEG. All the bromo-terminated PEGs and PN were obtained in high yield. Conversions of the terminal hydroxyl groups to bromo-termini were quantitative, as were the drug conjugation processes. The Ι$_1$$_3$values obtained from solutions of the ibuprofen-conjugated prodrugs are summarized in relation to those of ibuprofen in water and in aqueous solutions of the original PEG, PN, and several ordinary surfactants. We believe that the fully hydrophilic PEG is completely hydrated and forms no hydrophobic pocket by segment aggregation. These results indicate that the probe environment is significantly hydrophobic, particularly in the solution of prodrug PN, for which the ratio is similar to that obtained from typical micelles of surfactants. The results suggest, therefore, that the present synthetic method is very useful for preparing PEG-based prodrugs from pharmaceuticals having carboxyl functionalities.

  • The properties of YBCO thick film coated on Ag wire with YBCO powder is deeply affected by cracking on its surface which was deposited in organic solution by electrophoretic method. YBCO superconducting thick films were prepared on Ag wire$({\Psi}0.8mm)$ by electrophoresis in acetone with added PEG (Poly-Ethylene Glycol, 3% in Acetone), 1ml for being crack-free. The surface properties of YBCO superconducting wire was evidently improved with adding PEG. Added PEG which molecular weight is 600, 1000, 3400 was affected with variation of deposition voltages to the surface properties of samples. As a result, with adding PEG (its molecular weight is 3400), YBCO superconducting wire was better on its surface properties.

  • We investigated the applicability of polyethylene glycol (PEG) as a plasticizer in enteric-coated soft capsules based on determination of quality characteristics according to molecular weight and concentration of enteric-coating PEG solution. There was no difference according to molecular weight of PEG, whereas a low PEG concentration in the enteric-coating solution was associated with higher whiteness index and slower disintegration time in pH 6.8 media. Brittleness was observed in the coating film at seam areas in 5% PEG enteric-coating solution after 2 weeks of storage at room temperature. The enteric-coating properties of PEG were compared with those of acetylated monoglyceride (AMG) and triacetin, which are enteric-coating plasticizers. Enteric-coated soft capsule containing PEG as a plasticizer showed a lower whiteness index and faster dissolution profile than AMG and triacetin. Moreover, enteric-coated soft capsule containing AMG and triacetin as plasticizers showed coating film brittleness at seam areas after 2 months of accelerated storage [$40^{\circ}C$, relative humidity (RH) 75%] but no difference at room temperature storage ($25^{\circ}C$, RH 60%). The present study suggests that concentration of PEG is important to determine enteric-coating quality, regardless of the molecular weight of PEG. In conclusion, PEG has potential as a plasticizer due to its transparency and storage stability in enteric-coated soft capsules.

  • In this study, the effect of polyethylene glycol (PEG) on Cu electrodeposition was analyzed using cyclic voltammetry. The adsorption of PEG was affected by the specific adsorption of sulfate ion (SO42-) or chloride ion (Cl-). In SO42--based plating solution, the adsorption of PEG was limited by the adsorbed SO42-. Accordingly, the adsorbed PEG could suppress the electron transfer for Cu electrodeposition, but its effect was not significant. Meanwhile, in the plating solution composed of perchlorate ion (ClO4-) which does not specifically adsorb on Cu surface, a strong suppression effect of PEG was observed and it was proportional to the molecular weight of PEG. On the other hand, when Cl- was specifically adsorbed on Cu surface, the suppression effect of PEG was enhanced because PEG and Cl- formed an interrelated adsorbate. The synergetic effect of PEG and Cl- depended on the composition of the plating solution, which means that the synergy between PEG and Cl- is based on the physical interaction. For example, the hydrophobicity of PEG plays an important role in the interaction, as the suppression effect of PEG derivative having a hydrocarbon tail was further enhanced with the addition of Cl-.

  • In order to evaluate two-step treatment of PEG-freeze drying for highly-degraded waterlogged ash woods (Fraxinus PP.; ca. 5,700 BP), which were excavated from peat lands in western Korea, dimension stability was examined during 45 months after complete treatment. The samples pre-treated with PEG in water solution showed better dimensional stabilities than the ones with PEG in t-butanol(TBA) solution. It suggests that TBA reduced the flexibility of wood cells and overflying by TBA induced micro-checks during freeze drying. Micro-checks results in fragile wood structures and consequently, large shrinkage by moisture absorbances of high PEG contents during exposure in humid condition. The results suggest that PEG in water-solution treatment is better than PEG in t-butanol as pretreament for freeze drying of highly-degraded waterlogged ash woods.

  • Dimension stability was examined after PEG pretreatment and post freeze-drying treatment in order to determine the PEG(#3350) concentration and solvent for pre-treatment of freeze-drying of highly-degraded waterlogged ash woods(Fraxinus spp.; ca. 5,700 BP) excavated from peat lands at Pyungtack, Kyounggi-do. At the low concentration (<30-40%) of PEG soaking in both water and t-butanol, the weight increases abruptly, but at high concentration (>50%) gradually, consequently, taking longer treatment time. PEG loading was higher in t-butanol solution than in water. However, the best dimesional stability was obtained from freeze-drying after lower PEG solution (40% in water) soaking. Low dimensional stability, found in the samples treated with higher PEG solutions (60%-70% in t-butanol), might come from incomplete freezing and excess PEG absorbing moisture. The samples air-dried after 70% PEG treatment had collapse defects. In conclusion, the use of low concentration (about 40% in water) PEG solution was the most suitable pretreatment for freeze drying of highly-degraded waterlogged ash woods.

  • Purpose: This study was a randomized single-blind trial of whole versus split-dose PEG solutions for colonoscopy preparation to compare the patient compliance, quality of bowel cleansing, and endoscopist's satisfaction. Methods: The participants were recruited from outpatients who planned to receive colonoscopy of C hospital in Busan. Sixty participants were randomly assigned to receive either a spit-dose group(n=30) consuming $2{\ell}$ of PEG solution twice, or a whole-dose group(n=30), consuming $4{\ell}$ of PEG solution once. These participants completed the questionnaire to assess their compliance before colonoscopy. The quality of bowel cleansing was assessed using the Ottawa Scale with the endoscopist who was blinded to the type of preparation, and their satisfaction by using VAS. Results: The participants who did not completely consume $4{\ell}$ of PEG solution were less in split-dose than in whole-dose group (0% vs 13.3%). The split-dose group complained less about abdominal pain(t=2.644, p=0.009) and abdominal bloating(t=2.802, p=0.013) with a statistical significance. For the quality of bowel preparation, there were no significant differences in the bowel cleansing scores and the endoscopist's satisfaction between two groups. Conclusion: Colonic preparation with split-dose of PEG solution could be a more useful method for better patient compliance, with no significant impact on bowel cleansing quality.
