  • We report on the optimization of the fabrication process of hybrid sol-gel thin film deposition to produce low cost $1 {\times} 16$ splitters for optical communications. We learn that sol-gel film thickness is dependent upon the spinning speeds and viscosity of the sol-gel solutions and refractive index upon the dopant concentrations of Al and Zr in the sol solutions. We could find the optimized physical conditions to achieve the desired thickness of core and cladding layers. We will further carry out the fabrication and measurements of insertion loss, polarization dependent loss (PDL), etc. for the performance of fabricated splitter devices.

  • 본 논문에서는 PMF와 FBG로 구성된 PDL 기반 사냑 간섭계를 이용하여 편광 간섭형 광섬유 압력 센서를 구현하였다. 여러 종류의 PMF들에서 압력 민감도를 비교하기 위해, 서로 다른 세 종류의 보우-타이형 PMF를 센서부로 사용하였다. 구현된 광섬유 압력 센서를 이용하여 0~0.3 MPa의 범위에서 압력 측정을 수행하였으며, 최대 압력 민감도는 근사적으로 -15.07 nm/MPa로 측정되었고, 센서의 선형성을 나타내는 $R^2$값은 ~0.992로 측정되었다. 제안된 센서는 FBG를 이용하여 외부 온도 변화의 보상이 가능하면서도, 이전의 편광유지 광자결정 광섬유 기반 압력 센서에 비해 압력 민감도를 4배까지 증가시킬 수 있었다.

  • 본 논문에서는 PDL 기반 인터리빙 가능한 2차 Solc형 광유 간섭 필터를 제안하며, 출력되는 투과 스펙트럼들을 이론적으로 분석 및 실험적으로 측정하였다. 제안된 필터에서 각각의 구성요소는 편광 빔분배기, 반파장판, 그리고 복굴절이 큰 광섬유로 이루어진다. 이전의 Solc형 2차 광섬유 필터에서 복굴절이 큰 광섬유들은 특정한 각도로 융착 결합되어 편광 제어에 한계가 있었지만, 제안된 구조에서는 복굴절이 큰 광섬유 사이 반파장판을 삽입하여 주축의 각도 및 편광 제어를 유연하게 설정하여 출력 투과 스펙트럼들의 스위칭 특성을 유도하였다.

  • Craniofacial sutures absorb the stress transferred to skull. It was reported the cells of craniofacial sutures respond to exogenetic factors to be involved in growth control mechanism. In this study, we constructed a finite element model composed of cortical bone, cancellous bone, suture, PDL, and teeth by using CT images of a growing patient, simulating maxillary expansion to evaluate the effects of the thickness of sutures and type of maxillary expansion appliance on stress distribution in circummaxillary sutures.

Sources of Income Polarization in Korea: Globalization and Technological Innovation

  • This study provides empirical evidences for the relationship between income inequality and economic growth, and relationship of income inequality with some of explanatory variables such as technological innovation, trade globalization, financial globalization and fiscal policy. We find out that income inequality has an adverse effect on economic growth, showing its dynamic features, for which we employed the polynomial distributed lags (PDL) model. The effect of income inequality on economic growth lasts over 9 years, and its dynamic effect peaks after 4 years. In addition, we also attempted to find out empirical evidences of sources of income inequality. The results show that income inequality is positively related to technological innovation, financial globalization, and fiscal policy; negatively related to the trade globalization. Many studies employ cross-country data, but it could have serious problems in collecting statistical data. Korean data is used over the time period of 1990-2015 in this study.

  • Protein disulfide isomerase (PDI) is not only an isomerase catalyzing the formation of native disulfide bond(s) of nascent peptide, but also a molecular chaperone assisting chain folding. We have already reported the structure of a cDNA (bPDl) encoding PDI from Bombyx mori and the function of PDI as foldase in assisting protein folding. (omitted)

In-line Variable Attenuator Based on the Evanescent Wave Coupling Between a Side-polished Single-mode Fiber and an Index Matched Dielectric Plate

  • An in-line variable attenuator has been proposed and demonstrated exploiting a side-polished single-mode (SM) fiber evanescently coupled with an index matched dielectric plate. The attenuation can be controlled by fine mechanical sliding of the index matched dielectric plate. We have achieved 49 ㏈ dynamic range and very low excess loss of 0.2 ㏈ at 1550 nm wavelength. The measured polarization dependent losses (PDL) were 0.1, 0.2, and 0.4 ㏈ at 10, 20, and 30 ㏈ attenuation, respectively. Wavelength sensitivity was measured to be -0.017/nm ㏈ at 20 ㏈ attenuation.

Regulation of Th2 Cell Immunity by Dendritic Cells

  • Th2 cell immunity is required for host defense against helminths, but it is detrimental in allergic diseases in humans. Unlike Th1 cell and Th17 cell subsets, the mechanism by which dendritic cells modulate Th2 cell responses has been obscure, in part because of the inability of dendritic cells to provide IL-4, which is indispensable for Th2 cell lineage commitment. In this regard, immune cells other than dendritic cells, such as basophils and innate lymphoid cells, have been suggested as Th2 cell inducers. More recently, multiple independent researchers have shown that specialized subsets of dendritic cells mediate Th2 cell responses. This review will discuss the current understanding related to the regulation of Th2 cell responses by dendritic cells and other immune cells.

Expression of UNC-50 DNA in periodontal tissue of rats after application of intermittent orthodontic force (간헐적 교정력 적용 후 백서 치주인대에서 UNC-50 유전자의 발현)

  • Objective: Periodontal ligament fibroblasts have an ectomesenchymal origin and are thought to play a crucial role for not only homeostasis of periodontal tissues but also bone remodeling, wound healing and regeneration of tissues. Recently, it has been reported that UNC-50 is not expressed in gingival fibroblasts but in PDL fibroblasts. The purpose of this study was to examine the expression of UNC-50 and osteocalcin in the periodontium after application of intermittent force. Methods: Twelve rats had 40 grams of mesially-directed force applied at the upper molar for 1 hour/day. Four rats were sacrificed at 1, 3 and 5 days. Immunohistochemical localization of UNC-50 and osteocalcin antibody was carried out. The results showed apposition of new cellular cementum and a slight increase in periodontal space at the tension side. Results: Strong UNC-50 expression was observed in the differentiating cementoblasts close to PDL fibroblasts in the tension side whereas it was barely expressed at the compression side. Expression was strong at day 3, and decreased at day 5. Osteocalcin immunoreactivity expression was strong in differentiating cementoblasts at the tension side. Conclusion: It can be suggested that UNC-50 is related to the differentiation of cementoblasts, and may be responsible for the molecular event in PDL cells under mechanical stress.
