  • The simulated nuclear spent fuel (SIMFUEL) containing the platinum group elements which will not be dissolved in a nitric acid was completely dissolved with a acid digestion bomb. The metallic elements separated in the SIMFUEL were measured by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES). Because the peaks of metallic elements were spectrally interfered by uranium spectrum, uranium and metallic elements were separated by cation exchange resin for Mo, Pd, Rh and Ru and by anion exchange resin for Ba, Ce, La, Nd, Rh, Sr, Y and Zr, respectively. The recovery of Mo, Pd, Rh and Ru after separation by cation exchange chromatography found to be 99-103% and anion exchange separation showed 96.5-107% of recovery except Y with the simulated solution whose concentration was similar to the spent nuclear fuel. The relative standard deviation of this method showed 1.3-6.7% in the SIMFUEL whose concentrations of metallic elements were between several $10^2-10^3$ppm.

  • To understand the hemolytic anemia (HA) in children, the diagnostic approach and management of hereditary and acquired HA are described. The hereditary hemolytic anemia (HHA) can be classified according to the pathogenesis into three types : RBC membrane defects, hemoglobinopathies, and RBC enzymopathies. Clinical characteristics, laboratory findings and molecular defects of these three types are presented briefly. In Korea, HHA due to the RBC membrane defect, hereditary spherocytosis had been reported often but HHA due to hemoglobinopathies and RBC enzymopathies had been thought to be relatively rare. With recent development in the molecular diagnosis, ${\beta}$ thalassemia, mostly heterozygote, G6PD and pyruvate kinase deficiency have been reported with gene characterization. If the patients with microcytic hypochromic anemia show unproportionally low MCV or MCH or refractory to the iron therapy, hemoglobin electrophoresis and gene analysis for thalassemia or other unstable hemoglobinopathies need to be done accordingly. The global movement of the population especially from the region prevalent of hemoglobinopathies or enzymopathies to Korea warrants considering broad spectrum of etiology for the diagnosis of HHA. Aquired HA resulting from extracellular factors such as autoimmune HA from warm antibody, cold agglutinin and paroxysmal cold hemoglobinuria as well as nonimmune HA are described briefly.

  • We developed a fiber-optic temperature sensor system, with 10 fiber Bragg gratings, for abnormal high-temperature monitoring in power systems. We used Gaussian line-fitting algorithm to compensate the spectrum distortion in the wavelength-scanned Farby-Perot filter demodulation scheme. Compared with highest-peak-detection method, the proposed algorithm substantially reduced measurement errors. The overall measurement error was less than 1[%] compared with the reference thermocouple and the linearity error was 0.37[%].

  • The objective of this paper is to effectively detect partial discharges in XLPE power cables. In this field, we have been usually applied several sensors for such partial discharges. This study used a type of beyond compare antenna based on the influence of background noises. Also, we designed a new structure that is able to easily apply in the adhesion of planar patch types for XLPE power cables in measurement sensitiveness elevation. A high frequency simulation tool (CST-MWS) was applied to the antenna used in this study, and it was used to evaluate certain characteristics. We fabricated an antenna using the simulation data obtained from a specific test. After checking the sensitivity of this Planar Patch Sensor in the Lab, it was tested in an actual site. This paper analyzed the data as a part of time and frequency domain using an oscilloscope and spectrum analyzer, respectively.

  • In this study, we propose a fiber-optic hydrogen sensor using a polarization-diversity loop configuration composed of a polarization beam splitter, two quarter-wave plates, and a polarization-maintaining fiber coated with palladium whose thickness is ~400nm. One transmission dip of the output interference spectrum of the proposed sensor, chosen as a sensor indicator, was observed to spectrally shift with the increase of the hydrogen concentration, and the sensing indicator showed a wavelength shift of ~2.48nm at a hydrogen concentration of 4%. Except for a hydrogen concentration of 4%, the response time of the proposed sensor was measured as less than 12.5s and did not show significant dependence on the hydrogen concentration. In particular, the proposed fiber hydrogen sensor is more durable and highly resistant to external stress applied on a transverse axis of an optical fiber, compared with other hydrogen sensors based on side-polished fibers or fiber gratings.

  • In frequency selective channels, conventional PN code acquisition schemes are not ideal candidates. This is because they are primarily designed for the AWGN channel. In this paper, a direct-sequence spread-spectrum(DSSS) PN code acquisition system based on digital matched filtering (DMF) with automatic threshold control(ATC) algorithm is presented and analyzed with regards to probability of detection and probability of false alarm. These two important probabilities, the probability of detection ($P_D$) and the probability of false alarm ($P_{FA}$) are derived and analyzed in considering Doppler shift, sampling rate, mean acquisition time, and PN chip rate in frequency selective Rayleigh fading channel when using serial-search method as detection technique. From computer simulation results of a DMF acquisition system model, it is shown that the performance of the acquisition system using ATC algorithm is better than that of constant threshold system.

This study unveils a pioneering approach to predicting T2DM, employing the Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) algorithm, renowned for its predictive accuracy and computational efficiency. The investigation harnesses a meticulously curated dataset of 4303 samples, extracted from a comprehensive Chinese research study, scrupulously aligned with the World Health Organization's indicators and standards. The dataset encapsulates a multifaceted spectrum of clinical, demographic, and lifestyle attributes. Through an intricate process of hyperparameter optimization, the XGBoost model exhibited an unparalleled best score, elucidating a distinctive combination of parameters such as a learning rate of 0.1, max depth of 3, 150 estimators, and specific colsample strategies. The model's validation accuracy of 0.957, coupled with a sensitivity of 0.9898 and specificity of 0.8897, underlines its robustness in classifying T2DM. A detailed analysis of the confusion matrix further substantiated the model's diagnostic prowess, with an F1-score of 0.9308, illustrating its balanced performance in true positive and negative classifications. The precision and recall metrics provided nuanced insights into the model's ability to minimize false predictions, thereby enhancing its clinical applicability. The research findings not only underline the remarkable efficacy of XGBoost in T2DM prediction but also contribute to the burgeoning field of machine learning applications in personalized healthcare. By elucidating a novel paradigm that accentuates the synergistic integration of multifaceted clinical parameters, this study fosters a promising avenue for precise early detection, risk stratification, and patient-centric intervention in diabetes care. The research serves as a beacon, inspiring further exploration and innovation in leveraging advanced analytical techniques for transformative impacts on predictive diagnostics and chronic disease management.

  • A neurotoxin, 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) has been widely used to create animal model for Parkinson's disease (PD) due to its specific toxicity against dopaminergic (DA) neurons. Since DA signals modulate a broad spectrum of CNS physiology, one can expect profound alterations in neuroendocrine activities of both PD patients and 6-OHDA treated animals. Limited applications of 6-OHDA injection model, however, have been made on the studies of hypothalamuspituitary neuroendocrine circuits. The present study was performed to examine whether blockade of brain catecholamine (CA) biosynthesis with 6-OHDA can make any alteration in the transcriptional activities of hypothalamus-pituitary hormone genes in adult male rats. Three-month-old male rats (SD strain) were received 6-OHDA ($200{\mu}g$ in $10{\mu}\ell$ of saline/animal) by intracerebroventricular (icv) injection, and sacrificed after two weeks. To determine the mRNA levels of hypothalamuspituitary hormone genes, total RNAs were extracted and applied to the semi-quantitative RT-PCRs. The mRNA levels of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), the rate-limiting enzyme for the catecholamine biosynthesis, were significantly lower than those from the control group (control:6-OHDA=1:0.72${\pm}$0.02AU, p<0.001), confirming the efficacy of 6-OHDA injection. The mRNA levels of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) and corticotropin releasing hormone (CRH) in the hypothalami from 6-OHDA group were significantly lower than those from the control group (GnRH, control:6-OHDA=1:0.39${\pm}$0.03AU, p<0.001; CRH, control:6-OHDA=1:0.76${\pm}$0.07AU, p<0.01). There were significant decreases in the mRNA levels of common alpha subunit of glycoprotein homones (Cg$\alpha$), LH beta subunit (LH-$\beta$), and FSH beta subunit (FSH-$\beta$) in pituitaries from 6-OHDA group compared to control values (Cg$\alpha$, control:6-OHDA=1:0.81${\pm}$0.02AU, p<0.001; LH-$\beta$, control:6-OHDA=1:0.68${\pm}$0.04AU, p<0.001; FSH-$\beta$, control:6-OHDA=1:0.84${\pm}$0.05AU, p<0.001). Similarly, the level of adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH) transcripts from 6-OHDA group was significantly lower than that from the control group (control: 6-OHDA=1:0.86${\pm}$0.04AU, p<0.01). The present study demonstrated that centrally injected DA neurotoxin could downregulate the transcriptional activities of the two hypothalamus-pituitary neuroendocrine circuits, i.e., GnRH-gonadotropins and CRH-ACTH systems. These results suggested that hypothalamic CA input might affect on the activities of gonad and adrenal through modulation of hypothalamus-pituitary function, providing plausible explanation for frequent occurrence of sexual dysfunction and poor stress-response in PD patients.
