  • As high schools implement credit completion system these days, concerns about the dissolution of classes, which are the original stable groups of studying and living, and the instability of the basal space, is growing due to the extended operation of moving optional classes. The purpose of this research is to understand the effect that environmental features of the basal space within the school and the operation method have on the students' space use and formation of attachment place within the school. For this, the main activity places, attachment places, school life satisfaction and others were investigated at 2 Japanese credit-based comprehensive high schools, which are different in the physical environmental features of school buildings. Based on this, a quantitative analysis about the distribution of activity places and attachment places was implemented. The space use features for each student attribute were compared, and the school life satisfaction for each type of attachment place formation was analyzed. As a result, the change of the territorial consciousness about the class space according to the implementation of moving optional classes could be understood. And it was confirmed that the students' space using behavior and place evaluation change according to the physical environmental feature of the class space and common space, and that this is affecting the life satisfaction of students.

  • Noryang Temporary Palace was a place where king Jeongjo (1752-1800) would have lunch after crossing the Temporary Palace River on his way to Hwaseong Temporary Palace to worship at Hyeonryungwon, the tomb of his father, Sadoseja. The government offices in charge of ship bridge construction 'Jugyosa' and 'Byeoljangso' were located in the Temporary Palace. The central buildings of the Haenggung Palace, which ranged up to Yongyangbongjeojeong, were arranged to observe both 'Jugyosa' and 'Byeoljangso' from the Temporary Palace by lifting the ground from Sammun Gate to Yongyangbongjeojeong. Yongyangbongjeojeong, the center of Noryang Temporary Palace, features the style of royal palace architecture and functions of housing architecture. The 'Jugyosa' and 'Byeoljangso' buildings had eight quarters. According to the records, in addition, 15 wood sheds, 5 rice hubs, 3 barns, 1 side gate quarter, 1 front gate, 70 separate sheds, 2 suragan temporary buildings, oesammun gate and hongsalmun gate were found. Such architectural layout is matched with the Temporary Palace Jugyohwaneodo Painting.

  • This study set out to analyze James Turrell's Skyspace works by applying the object relations theory, compare them with several modern architectural works with a sky window based on the analysis results, and check common and differentiating features between them. The findings were as follows: first, Turrell's Skyspace works shed new light on the images of the sky by projecting inner light to the outside; second, sky windows in architecture make the self-representation of inner space clear through the introjection of light; third, 'Hill of the Buddha' reflects the most general aspect of the object relations theory as the nature of projection found in Turrell's Skyspace is added to it; and finally, Turrell installed event-like spaces and steps in 'Roden Crater' to apply the introjection of others that was deficient in Skyspace.

  • The latest urban planning is taking advantage of the city's spatiality, and its weight is increasing. The spatiality of the city extends to the three-dimensional air space, including the underground space and the surface space, and this is the relative location of land-use situations utilizing the characteristics of the feng shui geography. In this study, the urban planning of the Suwon Department and the construction process of the Suwon Hwaseong Fortress were analyzed based on the feng shui geography, using the topography and geographical features of Paldal Mountain as the center of the data. Natural-friendly urban planning is required to adapt to natural laws and to preserve and share the ecosystem while harmonizing with the surrounding environment.

  • Purpose Hereditary parkinsonism genes consist of causative genes of familial Parkinson's disease (PD) with a locus symbol prefix (PARK genes) and hereditary atypical parkinsonian disorders that present atypical features and limited responsiveness to levodopa (non-PARK genes). Although studies have shown that hereditary parkinsonism genes are related to idiopathic PD at the phenotypic, gene expression, and genomic levels, no study has systematically investigated connectivity among the proteins encoded by these genes at the protein-protein interaction (PPI) level. Materials and Methods Topological measurements and physical interaction enrichment were performed to assess PPI networks constructed using some or all the proteins encoded by hereditary parkinsonism genes (n=96), which were curated using the Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man database and literature. Results Non-PARK and PARK genes were involved in common functional modules related to autophagy, mitochondrial or lysosomal organization, catecholamine metabolic process, chemical synapse transmission, response to oxidative stress, neuronal apoptosis, regulation of cellular protein catabolic process, and vesicle-mediated transport in synapse. The hereditary parkinsonism proteins formed a single large network comprising 51 nodes, 83 edges, and three PPI pairs. The probability of degree distribution followed a power-law scaling behavior, with a degree exponent of 1.24 and a correlation coefficient of 0.92. LRRK2 was identified as a hub gene with the highest degree of betweenness centrality; its physical interaction enrichment score was 1.28, which was highly significant. Conclusion Both PARK and non-PARK genes show high connectivity at the PPI and biological functional levels.

  • Purpose: Combined resection of an invaded organ in advanced gastric cancer (AGC) with infiltration of adjacent organs is essential to achieve R0 resection. However, when the tumor invades the head of the pancreas or duodenum, R0 resection interferes with the lower resectability and results in a higher morbidity. Wereviewed these cases retrospectively and considered the proper extent of the surgical resection. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively analyzed cases where patients underwent surgery for gastric adenocarcinoma at the Department of Surgery, Presbyterian Medical Center, between January 1998 and December 2003. Among the 45 patients who were suspected to have pancreatic head or duodenum invasion by a primary tumor or metastatic lymph nodes based on the operative findings, we included 22 patients without incurable factors. The patients were classified into three groups: 4 patients that underwent a combined resection (PD group), 12 patients that underwent a palliative subtotal gastrectomy (STG group) and 6 patients that underwent bypass surgery only (GJ group). We analyzed the clinicopathological features, operative data and results. Results: The patients of the PD group achieved R0 resection by PD with D3 Dissection in all Patients. A pancreatic fistula was observed in one patient (morbidity 25%). There was no surgery-associated mortality (mortality 0%). All patients of the PD group were in stage IV. However, the 2-year survival rate (SR) was 75% and the 5-year SR was 50%. Six patients of the STG group underwent surgery with marginal resection and the other six patients of the STG group had a positive distal resection margin. The 2-year SR was 41.7% and the 5-year SR was 16.7%. Most of the patients of group GJ were of old age (mean age: $72.7{\pm}8.6$ years) or had chronic diseases. The 2-year SR was 0%. Conclusion: Combined resection of the pancreas and duodenum in AGC with pancreatic head invasion is relatively safe with moderate morbidity and a lower mortality. One can expect long-term survival if combined resectionis performed in cases without incurable factors.
