Objectives : Zizyphus seed has long been used in hypnotics and sedatives in oriental medicine, and it is reported that the Zizyphus seed elicited a variety of pharmacological actions besides CNS depression. We did a clinical study on the effectiveness of Zizyphus seed (Ansim-san) for insomnia in stroke patients. Methods : To 41 stroke patients suffering from insomnia, we administered the extract of Zizyphus seed (Ansim-san). Outcome measures were subjective in nature and included a morning questionnaire, visual analog scales, and observation forms by study personnel. We also, to find the applicable symptom-complex of Zizyphus seed (Ansim-san), examined accompanying symptoms. Results : 1. Zizyphus seed extract use meant that sleep latency was shorter, total sleep time was longer, number of wakenings was lower, wake time during sleep was shorter, sleep quality was improved, condition upon awakening was improved, ability to concentrate was improved, and the patients fell asleep more easily (P<0.001). There were no differences in morning sleepiness. 2. Among accompanying symptoms, an oppressed feeling in the chest was significant (P=0.035) in the patients who improved sleep quality. Conclusions : The results of this clinical study suggest that in stroke patients, Zizyphus seed (Ansim-san) can be effective for insomnia, and significantly effective in patients who have an oppressed feeling in the chest.

This study was investigated quality characteristics of gluten-free noodles added guar gum and basil seed gum (BSG). Gluten-free noodles were prepared using corn flour and corn starch and added 1% and 2% of guar gum and basil seed gum. Water binding capacity was measured by centrifuge, and moisture content was obtained by moisture analyzer. Color of noodles was measured from the midsection of noodles. Water absorption of noodles was calculated by weight of uncooked and cooked noodles. pH of noodles was measured by pH meter. Texture and tensile strength were obtained by rheometer. SPSS 12.0 program was used for significant differences by Duncan's multiple range test. Water binding capacity of noodles was the highest in 2% basil seed gum but 1% guar gum was the lowest. Moisture content was not different in uncooked noodles, but 1% guar had the highest moisture content in cooked noodles. Water absorption of noodles was high in basil seed gum group. pH of noodles was more increased in guar gum additions than basil seed gum additions. For hardness, control had the lowest as 16.09 N, but 2% guar gum showed the highest as 28.40 N. Tensile strength of noodles was increased by adding gums. These results suggested that 1% basil seed gum could be good materials for manufacturing gluten-free noodles in order to improve quality characteristics.
This study was carried out to investigate the possibility of establishing a reproductive system for the seed of Pedicularis hallaisanensis, which is in the endangered wild species II class in Korea. The seed of P. hallaisanensis is egg-shaped, and the seed coat is dark brown. The embryo was identified as a dwarf type by the seed section. The seed length was $0.47{\pm}0.07mm$, width $0.16{\pm}0.006mm$, and thickness $0.12{\pm}0.01mm$. The weight of one seed was $0.0003{\pm}0.0001mg$, and 1000 seeds weighed $4.59{\pm}0.02mg$. The degree of seed viability was 75.33% by the tetrazolium (TZ) assay. The highest germination rate of P. hallaisanensis seed was 71% after 4 weeks of storage at $4^{\circ}C$. However, the germination rate tended to decrease gradually over a longer storage period. The germination rates after 6 or 8 weeks of storage at $4^{\circ}C$ were 64% and 60%, respectively. We used two host plants, Artemisia princeps and Dendranthema zawadskii, to determine the effect of host plants on P. hallaisanensis seed germination. The germination of P. hallaisanensis mixed with A. princeps or D. zawadskii started at 53.5 and 62.5 days after sowing, respectively. We did not find any germination 164 days postsowing with both host plants. When A. princeps and D. zawadskii were used as host plants for P. hallaisanensis seed germination, P. hallaisanensis seed germination rates were 45.5% and 19.5%, respectively. The average time to germination was 70.2 days for A. princeps, and 46.8 days for D. zawadskii.
Safflower seed extract was prepared by a high-pressure extraction technology and its quality characteristics were compared to that of other conventional extraction techniques, such ultrasonic and reflux extractions. Safflower seeds were extracted with 80% aqueous ethanol by three above extraction methods, and further fractionated with Diaion HP-20 column chromatography to obtain a partially purified safflower seed extract (PPSSE). Among the three extraction techniques examined, the reflux extraction showed the higher yields of EtOH extract and PPE than the ultrasonic and high-pressure extractions. Levels of most phenolic compounds in the EtOH extract of safflower seed are higher in reflux and ultrasonic extractions than the high pressure extraction, but levels of two serotonin aglycones, N-(p-coumaroyl)serotonin (CS) and N-feruloylserotonin (FS), in PPSSE were higher in the high pressure extraction than the reflux and ultrasonic extractions. In addition, color values (L and a) of the PPSSE were higher in the high-pressure extraction than the reflux and ultrasonic extractions, although there were no significant differences in pH and UV maxima absorption spectra among three extraction techniques. These results indicate that the high-pressure extraction technology is a simple and effective extraction for preparation of a high quality of safflower seed extract containing CS and FS with anti-wrinkle activity.

This experiment was conducted over a 3-year period (1990-1992) to evaluate the production and quality of orchardgrass (Potomac)-red clover (Kenland) mixture when orchardgrass + red clover mixture was sown at seed rates of 20+0. 18+2, 16+4, 14+6 and 12+8 kg/ha. Total herbage dry matter, crude protein and digestible organic matter production and organic matter intake were markedly affected by increasing rcd clover seed rate, those increased with increasing red clovcr seed rate due to the cnhancernent of red clover percentage of total herbagc in all 3-year. but significant differences occured between the orchardgrass alone and orchardgrass-red clover mixture with a seed rate of 4,6 and 8 kg/ha red clover (P<0.01). But on the other hand increasing red clover seed rate increased red clover percentage in total herbage, the mean red clover percentage of total herbage at the last cutting ranged from 54 to 65% in first year. 58 to 60% in second year, and 62 to 69% in third year, particularly it was observed that red clover was sown at seed rates of 6 and 8 kg/ha for red clover sown dominated strongly as the cutting times were progressed. Considering the maintenance of good botanical composition balance and the enhancement of production and quality of herbage, the optimized seed rate for orchardgrass-red clover mixtures, 16 kg/ha orchardgrass and 4 kg/ha red clover seems to be considered adequate.

Objective: For localization of the motor cortex, seed-based resting-state functional MRI (rsfMRI) uses the contralateral motor cortex as a seed. However, research has shown that the location of the motor cortex could differ according to anatomical variations. The purpose of this study was to compare the results of rsfMRI using two seeds: a template seed (the anatomically expected location of the contralateral motor cortex) and a functional seed (the actual location of the contralateral motor cortex determined by task-based functional MRI [tbfMRI]). Materials and Methods: Eight patients (4 with glioma, 3 with meningioma, and 1 with arteriovenous malformation) and 9 healthy volunteers participated. For the patients, tbfMRI was performed unilaterally to activate the healthy contralateral motor cortex. The affected ipsilateral motor cortices were mapped with rsfMRI using seed-based and independent component analysis (ICA). In the healthy volunteer group, both motor cortices were mapped with both-hands tbfMRI and rsfMRI. We compared the results between template and functional seeds, and between the seed-based analysis and ICA with visual and quantitative analysis. Results: For the visual analysis, the functional seed showed significantly higher scores compared to the template seed in both the patients (p = 0.002) and healthy volunteers (p < 0.001). Although no significant difference was observed between the functional seed and ICA, the ICA results showed significantly higher scores than the template seed in both the patients (p = 0.01) and healthy volunteers (p = 0.005). In the quantitative analysis, the functional seed exhibited greater similarity to tbfMRI than the template seed and ICA. Conclusion: Using the contralateral motor cortex determined by tbfMRI as a seed could enhance visual delineation of the motor cortex in seed-based rsfMRI.

There is little information about the seed longevity of wild plants, although seed bank storage is an important tool for biodiversity conservation. This study was conducted to predict the seed viability equation of Agastache rugosa. The A. rugosa seeds were stored at moisture contents ranging from 2.7 to 12.5%, and temperatures between 10 and $50^{\circ}C$. Viability data were fitted to the seed viability equation in a one step and two step approach. The A. rugosa seeds showed orthodox seed storage behaviour. The viability constants were $K_E=6.9297$, $C_W=4.2551$$C_H=0.0329$, and $C_Q=0.00048$. The P85 of A. rugosa seeds was predicted to 152 years under standard seed bank conditions. The P85 predicted by seed viability equation can be used as basic information for optimization of seed storage processes.
Grape seed oil was extracted using different preparatory treatments as follows: (1) grinding, (2) grinding and roasting, (3) grinding and wet- roasting, (4) grinding, roasting, and wet-roasting, and (5) grinding, wet-roasting, and wet-roasting. The highest antioxidant activity was obtained from the sample with the method (2). Initial states of oxidation were similar except method (1) that showed more oxidized state, being P.O.V.8. Acid values were observed in the range from 1.42 to 1.89. The lowest acid value was found as 1.42 in method (1) and those of others were somewhat higher, indicating that heating process of roasting produced some free fatty acids. From the results of sensory evaluation, the best odor and taste were obtained from the methods (2) and (3). Repetitive procedure of wet-roasting, like method 5, caused some loss of flavor components and decrease in the sensory evaluation score. Addition of grape seed oil (method 2) to soybean and perilla oil at the level of 20% retained considerable antioxidant activities as much as 4.3 and 5 times, respectively, than 100% soybean or perilla oil stored for 12 weeks. When soybean or perilla oil was mixed with 20% grape seed oils, P.O.V. decreased to half of that of unmixed oils.
The quality characteristics of chicken thigh frankfurters prepared with various concentrations of red pepper seed powder (0, 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5%) were examined. With increasing levels of red pepper seed powder, moisture and ash contents of samples increased but protein contents significantly decreased (p<0.05). Moreover, the lightness of uncooked and cooked samples decreased with increasing concentrations of red pepper seed powder. Redness and yellowness values of uncooked and cooked samples containing 1.0% and 1.5% red pepper seed powder were significantly higher than those of control samples and samples containing 0.5% red pepper seed powder (p<0.05). The cooking yield and viscosity of the samples increased with increasing red pepper seed powder content. In conclusion, chicken thigh frankfurters containing 1.5% red pepper seed powder had better physicochemical properties than the other samples tested. Therefore, 1.5% red pepper seed powder is suitable additive for chicken thigh products.

The purpose of this study is to clarify the effect of plant growth regulator "Uniconazole-P" on the control of growth and seed producrtion of pasture plants under grown in sward conditions. Four species examined were orchard grass, timothy, red clover and alfalfa. Uniconazole-P concentrations were control(0), 20ppm and 40ppm, and foliar sprayed on canopy structures at the floral differentiation stages of grasses and at the begining of flowering stages of legumes, respectively. 1. Yield components and seed yield components of grasses and legumes were responded differently between Uniconazole-P concentrations, species and the stages of growth. 2. At early heading stages, the plant length and culm length of grasses were reduced by Uniconazole-P treatments. On the contrary, the dry weight of ears per area and chlorophyll concentrations were increased by Uniconazole-P treatments. 3. At seed ripening stages, the number of ears, dry weight of a tiller, dry weight of a ear, dry weight of ears per area and dry weight of seeds in orchardgrass, and the number of ears, dry weight of a ear, dry weight of ears per area, dry weight of seeds and harvest index in timothy were increased by Uniconazole-P treatments. 4. At early flowering stages, the plant length and total length of internodes were reduced by Uniconazole-P treatments. On the contrary, total length of branches and chlorophyll concentrations of red clover and alfalfa were increased by Uniconazole-P treatments. Particularly, the number of inflorescences and dry weight of inflorescences of red clover was increased greatly by Uniconazole-P treatments. 5. At seed ripening stages, the plant length of both of legumes were reduced by Uniconazole-P treatments. On the contrary, the dry weight of a inflorescence, dry weight of inflorescences per area, dry weight of seeds and harvest index of alfalfa was increased by Uniconazole-P treatments. 6. Seed production of grasses by Uniconazole-P treatments can be explained as following processes at each stage of growth. 1) reduced in plant length and culm lengths at early heading stages, 2) increased in number of ears and dry weight of a ear at both of stages, and 3) increased in dry weight of ears per area, dry weight of seeds and harvest index at seed ripening stages. 7. Seed production of legumes by Uniconazole-P treatments can be explained as following processes at each stage of growth. 1) reduced in plant length and total length of internodes and increased in number of branches and total length of branches at early flowering stages, 2) increased in number of inflorescences and dry weight of inflorescences at both of stages, and 3) increased in dry weight of seeds and harvest index at seed ripening stages.
