Evaluation of antibacterial activity against Candida albicans according to the dosage of various denture cleansers

  • PURPOSE. The purpose of this study is to compare the antibacterial activity of currently purchasable denture cleansers against Candida albicans. Materials and methods: This study used tablet-type denture cleansers, PolidentⓇ, CoolingdentⓇ and FittydentⓇ, along with liquid denture cleansers, HexamedineⓇ, ListerineⓇ and Apple vinegarⓇ. The antibacterial activities of denture cleansers were evaluated based on the number of C. albicans and concentrations of the denture cleansers. Results. In the 0.5 × 106 cfu/㎖ culture medium, the C. albicans' death rate of PolidentⓇ was significantly lower than those of FittydentⓇ, HexamedineⓇ, ListerineⓇ, and Apple vinegarⓇ(P<.05). In the 0.5 × 107 cfu/, the C. albicans' death rates of PolidentⓇ and CoolingdentⓇ were significantly lower than those of FittydentⓇ, HexamedineⓇ, ListerineⓇ and Apple vinegarⓇ(P<.05). The C. albicans' death rates of PolidentⓇ and CoolingdentⓇ were significantly decreased at 0.02 g and 0.01 g. The C. albicans' death rate of FittydentⓇ was significantly decreased at 0.005 g (P<.05). The C. albicans' death rate of HexamedineⓇ was significantly decreased at 1/16 dilution. The C. albicans' death rate of ListerineⓇ was decreased at 1/8 dilution, and the antibacterial activity of Apple vinegarⓇ was decreased at 1/4 dilution (P<.05). Conclusion. As the number of C. albicans increased, the antibacterial activities of the denture cleansers decrease. In the tablet-type denture cleanser, all denture cleansers showed 100% C. albicans' death rate when used at a dose of 1 tablet. One denture cleanser showed the same antibacterial effect with only 1/3 of a tablet. In the liquid type denture cleanser, the level of dilution required was different for each denture cleanser.

  • A series of numerical experiments with measurements observed at continuously operating reference stations (CORS) of the international GNSS services (IGS) and the national geographical information institute of Korea (NGII) have been intensively carried out to evaluate the quality of pseudo-ranges and carrier-phases of GPS L2C signal obtained by various receiver types, benign and harsh operational environment. In this analysis, some quality measures, such as signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), the magnitude of multipath, and the number of cycle slips, the pseudo-range and carrier phase obtaining rate were computed and compared. The SNR analysis revealed an impressive result that the trend in the SNR of C/A and the L2C comparably depends upon type of receivers. The result of multipath analysis also showed clearly different tendency depending on the receiver types. The reason for this inconsistent tendency was seemed to be that the different multipath mitigation algorithm built-in each receiver. The number of L2C cycle slip was less than P2(Y), and L2C measurements obtaining rate was higher than that of P2(Y) in three receiver types. In the harsh observational environment, L2C quality was not only superior to P2(Y) in all aspects such as SNR, multipath magnitude, the number of cycle slips, and measurement obtaining rate, but also it could maintain a level of quality equivalent to C/A. According to the results of this analysis, it's expected that improved positioning performance like accuracy and continuity can be got through the use of L2C instead of existing P2(Y).

Forage productivity of Silage Corn and Sorghum at Differnet Planting Dates in Rice Black-Streaked Dwart Virus Prevalent Area (흑조위축병이 심한 지역에서 파종기에 따른 사일리지용 옥수수와 수수의 건물생산성)

  • Dry matter productivity at silage stage of two corn hybrids varying resistance to rice blackstreaked dwarf virus(RBSDV) and two sorghum hybrids varying growth duration was evaluated at six planting dates (Apr. 1, Apr. 15, Apr. 29, May 13, May 27, and June 10) in Kyongsan where RBSDV is prevalent.Corn was harvested 38-40 days after silking. For sorghum 1st-cut was made 19-22 days after heading and some regrowth (2nd-cut) on October 13. 1. Percent stand of both corn hybrids was over 91% at all planting dates, but that of sorghum ranged 37.2-80.3% depending on hybrids and planting dates. 2. The number of days from planting to emergence decreased as planting date delayed in both crops. The number of days from emergence to silking of both corn hybrids and a sorghum hybrid(P 956) decreased as planting date delayed, but that of the other sorghum hybrid(P 931) increased significantly after May 13 planting. 3. RBSDV infection rate of corn hybrids was highest at April 1 planting (Kwanganok 24.896, Jinjuok 63.0%) and decreased up to April 29 planting and then increased as planting date delayed. Sorghum was not infected by RBSDV at all. 4. EarfTotal dry matter ratio of corn ranged 30.6-47.9% and that of sorghum 3.1-30.7% depending on hybrids and planting dates. All the hybrids developed grain normally at all planting dates except a sorghum hybrid (P 931) which developed few grains after May 13 planting. 5. Crude (C) protein and C. fat contents were similar among all treatments. C. fiber content of P 931 was higher than that of both corn hybrids and P 956, but nitrogen free extract (NFE) was lower. C. fiber and NFE of both corn hybrids and 1st-cut sorghum were similar among the planting dates, but C. fiber and NFE of 2nd-cut of sorghum decreased and C. protein increased as planting date delayed due to plants were younger. 6. Dry matter (DM) yield of all hybrids decreased as planting date delayed except Jinjuok of which yield was highest at April 29 planting. DM yield of corn was similar to 1st-cut sorghum, but lower than total DM yield of sorghum at April 1 and 15 plantings where regrowth yield was high.

  • The nucleotide sequence of inducible chloramphenicol acetyl-transferase(CAT) gene isolated from a small plasmid pSBK203 of Staphylococcus aureus was determined. The base sequence shows that structural gene of pSBK203-CAT encodes a protein of 213 amino acids and has a leader region which encodes a short polypeptide of 9 amino-acids in its upstream. vertical bar /sup 35/S vertical bar-Methionine labelled CAT gene product in minicell showed almost same mobility with pC194-CAT of which molecular weight is 24Kdal on polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Predicted amino acid sequence of pSBK203-CAT has revealed a high degree of homology with the CATs of pC194 and pC221 than those of cat-86, Tn9 and proteus mirabilis PM13.

  • The stability constant of the complex between salicylic acid($H_2A$) and Fe(III) ion has been determined using UV-Vis absorption spectrometry and pH titration method in O.1M $KNO_3$ aqueous solution at $20^{\circ}C$ and compared with reference value, $logK_f=16.48$. The $pK_{a1}$ and $pK_{a2}$ of $H_2A$ are $2.92{\pm}0.08$ and $12.90{\pm}0.13$, respectively and the $logK_f$ of 1:1 complex Fe(III)-$H_2A$ system is $11.88{\pm}0.12$ at $20^{\circ}C$.

  • Electroless plating technique was utilized to flip chip bonding to improve surface mount characteristics. Each step of plating procedure was studied in terms pf pH, plating temperature and plating time. Al patterned 4 inch Si wafers were used as substrstes and zincate was used as an activation solution. Heat treatment was carried out for all the specimens in the temperature range from room temperature to $400^{\circ}C$ for $30^{\circ}C$ minutes in a vacuum furnace. Homogeneous distribution of Zn particles of size was obtained by the zincate treatment with pH 13 ~ 13.5, solution concentration of 15 ~ 25% at room temperature. The plating rates for both Ni-P and Au electroless plating steps increased with increasing the plating temperature and pH. The main crystallization planes of the plated Au were found to be (111) a pH 7 and (200) and (111) at pH 9 independent of the annealing temperature.

Fermentation Characteristics of Honey Wine by Saccharomyces bayanus (Saccharomyces bayanus를 이용한 벌꿀 발효주의 양조 특성)

  • Fermentation characteristics for the production of honey wine (mead and melomel) was investigated. Among the yeast strains tested, Saccharomyces bayanus showed higher alcohol production and better fermentability than the other strains at low temperature. Optimum pH and temperature for the production of honey wine by Saccharomyces bayanus were pH 4.0 and $20^{\circ}C$, respectively, and optimum soluble solid content of diluted honey solution for the fermentation was between 24 and $27^{\circ}Brix$. Total acidity and pH of honey wine (mead) did not change considerably during the whole period of fermentation, but those of Tangerine and Japanese apricot honey wine (melomel) changed during the fermentation. As the fermentation progressed, reducing sugar decreased continuously until the late period of fermentation, while alcohol content increased continuously during the same period. After fermentation of 21 days, honey wine consisted of about $8.5{\sim}9.1^{\circ}Brix$ of soluble solid, $1.90{\sim}2.32%$ of reducing sugar with the conversion rate of $90{\sim}92%$. After 21 days of fermentation, alcohol contents of mead fermented with polyflower and acasia flower were 13.3 and 13.7%, respectively. Final alcohol content was not affected significantly by the source of honey. While pH of the osmotically extracted fruit honey juice decreased rapidly to pH $2.92{\sim}2.97$ after 13 days of fermentation, total titratable acidity of Tangerine and Japanese apricot honey wine were 0.30 and 0.53%, respectively. After 13 days of fermentation, reducing sugar of fruit honey wines were reduced to $2.03{\sim}2.87%$, alcohol content were reached up to 13.1 and 12.5% for Tangerine and Japanese apricot honey wine, respectively. Generally, honey extracted fruit juices were fermented more efficiently than diluted honey juice.

  • the molecular and crystal 3-dimensional structure of bentazone, C10H12N2O3S, has been determined from single crystal x-ray diffraction study. Crystal system is monoclinic: a=8.7817(9)Å, b=9.6059(9) Å, c=13.574(9) Å, β=97.269(1)', V=1136.1(6)Å, space group : P21/c, z=4. The molecular structure model was solved by direct method and refined by full matrix least squares. The final reliable factor, R, is 0.045 for 1396 independent reflections(Fo2>4σFo2). A molecule has a staggered conformation with thiocarbazin ring and isopropyl functional group and the molecules by hydrogen bonds are cross stacked along the c-axis.

  • p-Phenylenediamine dihydrobromide and p-phenylenediamine dihydrochloride are found to be isomorphous. p-Phenylenediamine dihydrobromide is triclinic with lattice parameters, $a=4.52{\pm}0.02{\AA}\;b=6.13{\pm}0.02{\AA},c=8.88{\pm}0.03{\AA},\;{\alpha}=111{\pm}1^{\circ},\;{\beta}=97{\pm}1^{\circ},\;{\gamma}=101{\pm}1^{\circ}.$ It belongs to space group $P\bar{1}$, and there is one molecule in the unit cell. The crystal structure is determined according to the method of Fourier synthesis from the electron density projections in three principal crystallographic axes. The crystal structure, thus determined is refined by the method of two-dimensional difference Fourier synthesis.
