  • We investigated temporal changes of composition, habitat area, growth rate and elements content of hydrophytes at the artificial vegetation island (AVI) in Kyungan Stream within Lake Paldang. We also assessed nutrient removal rate through cutting off the emergent part of hydrophytes. The kinds of hydrophytes have increased from four species (P. australis, P. japonica, T. angustifolia and the Z. latifolia) at initial stage of installation to more than 29 species for 6-year operation. P. japonica was most dominant species at the AVI in 2006. The habitat area of have increased about 2.5 times compared to the initial planting area, occupying 63% of AVI's vegetation area. The incoming species of S. fluviatilis and B. frondosa have adapted successively and expanded habitat area in the AVI. The relative growth rate of P. japonica and P. australis was highest in spring sprouting period. Their hights and weights have increased until summer, by the time they were cutting off the emergent part. They started regrowth immediately after cutting and continued to grow until September and withered away in November. The carbon contents of P. japonica and P. australis have increased during growth phase, on the contrary, the nitrogen and phosphorus contents have decreased. By cutting off and removing the emergent part (leaves and branches) of hydrophytes twice from AVI, $17.6gN/m^2/y$ of nitrogen and $1.3gP/m^2/y$ of phosphorus was removed from AVI in 2006.

  • This paper has attempted to investigate the change in soil moisture volume and temperature of architecture by planting ground(soil thickness and soil mixture ratio) and ground cover plants(Sedum sarmentosum, Zoysia japonica, Chrysanthemum zawadskii) for middle region green roof system. For this, a test was conducted on the roof of Konkuk University building from April 2009 to October 2009. In terms of treatment, five types(SL, $P_7P_1L_2$, $P_6P_2L_2$, $P_5P_3L_2$, $P_4P_4L_2$) depending on soil mixture ratio and two types(15cm, 25cm) by soil depth were created. Results of soil moisture volume by soil mixture ratio in the 15cm soil thickness showed that the difference was significance between simple soil and mixture soil treatment, however, the statistical significance was not recognized according to soil mixture ratio. In case of 25cm soil thickness, soil moisture volume by soil mixture ratio was more higher 7Vol.%~10Vol.% in the mixture soil than simple soil treatment. In terms of districts planted ground cover plants, soil volume moisture differed among plants in the order Zoysia japonica 17.74 Vol.%$34.86^{\circ}C$, district non-planted $27.49^{\circ}C$, Sedum sarmentosum $25.11^{\circ}C$, Chrysanthemum zawadskii $23.08^{\circ}C$, Zoysia japonica $24.45^{\circ}C$ respectively So, concrete surface showed more higher $5^{\circ}C{\sim}15^{\circ}C$ than other things among the all the time. Result of inner temperature of the architecture and soil, it was measured inner of architecture $25.69^{\circ}C$, inner district non-planted $24.29^{\circ}C$, Chrysanthemum zawadskii $23.90^{\circ}C$, Zoysia japonica $24.02^{\circ}C$, Sedum sarmentosum $25.13^{\circ}C$, respectively.

  • This study was executed to analyze the vegetational landscape structure and administration planning of Younguan Royal Tomb forest by the classification and DCA ordination were applied to the study are in order to classify them into several groups based on environmental variables. Also Younguan Royal Tomb forest comparison of a pair of photographs taken in 1920s and 1990. Sixteen sites were sampled with clumped sampling method in september 1990 and five quadrats were examined in each site. By classification and DCA, the plant community were divided into two groups(A. japonica community, P. densiflora, Quercus acutissima community) by the humus. Pinus densiflora community of actual vegetion covered 15.9%, Alnus japonica 6.5% and Quercus community 65.6% of the total area. And the afforested vegetation of P. koraiensis. P. rigida and Juglans mandshurica covered 13.2%. DCA ordination showed that successional trends of tree species seem to be from P. densiflora, Q. aliena to Q. acutissima in P. densiflora community and from A. japonica community of the upper layer. By the comparison of couple photographs between 1920s and 1990 we can recognize the change of historical landscape composed of P. densiflora community, A. japonaca and those community shall be conserved by the disclimax method, i.e. the broadleaf vegetation in the underlayer in the P. densiflora community should be cleared out. Otherwise the vegetational landscape sructure in Younguan Royal Tomb is successed to progress succession to Q. acutissima landscape.

  • Three species of Pseudolarix including P. japonica, P. sp. A, and P. sp. B, all belonging to Pinaceae, are systematically described from the Middle Miocene Duho Formation of the Yeonil Group based on the detached seminiferous scales. The presence of Pseudolarix in the Yeonil flora indicates that various kinds of Pinaceae did flourish during the Middle Miocene. The occurrence of Pseudolarix is the first record in the Korean Tertiary flora.

  • HARN, Chang Yawl (Chonnam U. Kwangju, Korea): Siudies on the dimorpism of the Perisicaria senticosa Nakai-Kor. jour. Bot. 3(1) 16-25 During his researches regarding the morphological and physiological properties of Polygonecenae, the author has found that the species, Persicaria senticosa, aiso, besides the heterostylous plants of Polygonum family, Fagopyrum esculentum, and Persicaria japonica which was recently verified by the author as dimorphic, shows the typical floral structure of heterostylism, the description of which is not found in taxonomical works. Further research on this species have revealed that this plant, despite pressessing characteristic structural dimorphism, does not exhibit even the slight signs of heterostlylous properties physiologically. This is a deviation from the usual behavior of normal heterostylous plants. What is interesting is the fact that the physiological behavior of this species is quite contrary to that of P. japonica which is considered to be the most highly specialized dimorphic plant. Thus it is assurred that if some species of this family had taken a heterostylic form in its course of development from autogamy to allogamy, P. seoticosa would be the least differentiated type of dimorphic forms among the three heterostylous plants, including buckwheat, of this family. The results obtained in this experiment are summarized as follows: 1) P. senticosa has two forms of flower, one, long style-short stamened; the other, short style-long stamened. Not only conspicuous is this primary difference, but the secondary difference, such as pollen grain size, is noticeable between long and short styled individuals, thus expressing structurally the definite trait of a dimorphic plant. 2) Structural alteration of floral parts towards dimorphism has preceeded far less in comparison with those of the P. japonica and F. esculentum. 3) Elaborate studies on fertility reveal that this species does not show the slightest sign of the physiological characteristics of dimorphic plants. In other words, regardless of the modes of combinations, legitimate and illegitimate, fertilization and fruit setting flourish unimpaired. 4) Growth of pollen tubes apparently parallels the results in the fertility, tubes reaching ovary approximately 30 minutes after pollination both in legitimate and illegitimate combinations. Pollen tube penetration appears to be comparatively rapid. 5) A slight difference in the growth of pollen tube seems to exist between legitimate and illegitimate combinations, legitimate union giving slightly faster tube penetration. 6) In the present experiment it was clarified that P. senticosa, known to possess one form of flower in taxonomy, is in reality dimorphic plant having two of flowers. Although this species is definitely heterostylous in floral structure, physiological evidence and pollen tube behavior show that the differentiation of this plant toward the dimorphism has apparently proceeded slightly except for some parts of floral organ. In ordinary heterostylous plants it is a matter of common occurrence that when illegitimately cmbined, there is poor or no fertility, Contrary to the universal property of heterostylous plants, no difference is observed in the fertility and pollen tube growth between the legitimate and illegitimate combinations in the case of P. senticosa. Compared to the P. japonica and F. esculentum, which are supposed to have undergone high degree of dimorphic differentiation, it is an unavoidable conclusion that P. senticosa has not yet developed as a heterostyle plant except for some of its floral parts. If P. japonica is assumed to be the most differentiated type of hetenostylous plant, thenthe P. senticosa would be regarded as the primitive, retaining still the self-fertile nature so common to the Polygonum genus. In nature, however, this plant has a better chance to be pollinated legitimately owing to the two forms of flowers than to be pollinated illegitimately. The author is indebted to Dong Chul, Kim as well as other members of the Department of Plant Breeding and Genetics of Chonnam National University for their efforts out the laborious experiments during the course of the present studies.

  • This study was performed to elucidate the possible antioxidative effects of several wild plant extracts. Wild plants were extracted with methanol or water using general method. In first experiments, antioxidative effects were measured by lipid peroxidation using rat brain homogenate. Coptis japonica extract showed the highest antioxidative activity among the 15 wild plant extracts. In second experiments, rats were fed on the semipurified diets with or without Coptis japonica extracts at the level of 0.5% for 4 weeks. MDA production of liver homogenate were significantly lower in the rats fed Coptis japonica extracts (P<0.05). Cytosolic catalase. GPX, and SOD activities were not changed, whereas the activities of GST and glutathione level were significantly higher in rats fed Coptis japonica extracts (P<0.05). These results suggest that Coptis japonica extract has an antioxidative effect through increasing GST activity and glutathione level and decreasing MDA production.

  • Larvae of pandalid shrimp Pandalopsis japonica are benthic, and may prefer bottom to planktonic food items. Three diets, enriched Artemia meta-nauplii (AR), clam meat (CM), and crumbled shrimp (CD), were evaluated as food for early larvae in terms of biometric growth R:D ratios. Larvae fed AR and CM had significantly greater total length and dry weight than did larvae fed CD (P<0.05). Survival was significantly greater in larvae fed CM than in those fed AR and CD (P<0.05). R:D ratios were also significantly higher in larvae fed AR and CM than in those fed CD (P<0.05). Planktonic Artemia meta-nauplii containing high levels of fatty acids and amino acids were not suitable for either normal somatic growth or survival at early benthic larval stages. Furthermore, it is necessary to determine the optimal feeding duration to increase digestibility of AD. Thus, we propose that clam meat is the best diet for pandalid shrimp larvae.

  • The whole plants of Selaginella tamariscina, Orostachycis japonicus, the cortex of Ulmus mandshurica, and the wood of Alnus japonica have been used as folk medicine for treating cancer. The cytotoxic activity of these plants were tested using a calorimetric tetrazolium assay (MTT assay). S. tamariscina and A. japonica showed mild $IC_{50}$ value, comparing with O. japonicus and U. mandshurica. So, MeOH extracts of S. tamariscina and A. japonica were partitioned into $CHCl_3$, EtOAc and n-BuOH, successively. The $CHCl_3$, EtOAc and BuOH fractions of S. tamariscina and A. japonica showed low percent of survival against $P_{388}$ and $MKN_{45}$ cells respectively. To isolate active components, they were subjected to silica gel column chromatography. Compound I was obtained from EtOAc extracts of S. tamariscina and identified as amentoflavone by chemical and spectral analysis. Amentoflavone inhibited the survival of P388 cells dose dependently, while not clearly inhibited that of $MKN_{45}$ cells.

  • Ion-exchange chromatography and ultra-filtration permeation were used to extract carnosine from the eel Anguilla japonica. In an investigation of its antioxidant properties, the eel carnosine prevented lipid peroxidation in linoleic acid systems, scavenged free radicals, and exhibited superoxide dismutase-like activity. These activities increased as the carnosine concentration increased. The nitrite scavenging effects (NSEs) of commercial carnosine and the eel carnosine were measured at various acidic pHs (1.2, 3.0, and 4.2). For both types of carnosine, the maximum NSE was observed at pH 1.2. At this pH, the NSE of the eel carnosine was 65.3%. Both types of carnosine were effective at maintaining reasonably good color of ground beef patties over 5 days of storage at $4^{\circ}C$ and inhibited metmyoglobin formation as well as lipid peroxidation. These data suggest that the eel carnosine might be useful as a "natural" antioxidant in commercial production and storage of muscle foodstuffs.
