  • The Non-parametric Analysis is powerful in data test especially for the non- normality water quality data. The data at three monitoring stations of the Tam-Jin River were evaluated for their normality using Skewness, Q-Q plot and Shapiro-Willks tests. Various constituent of water quality data including temperature, pH, DO, SS, BOD, COD, TN and TP in the period of January 1994 to December 2004 were used as dataset. Shapiro-Willks normality test was carried out for a test 5% significance level. Most water quality data except DO at monitoring stations 1 and 2 showed that data does not normally distributed. It is indicating that non-parametric method must be used for a water quality data. Therefore, a homogeneity was conducted by Mann-Whitney U test (p<0.05). Two stations were paired in three pairs of such stations. Differences between stations 1, 2 and stations 1, 3 for pH, BOD, COD, TN and TP were meaningful, but Tam-Jin 2 and 3 stations did not meaningful. In addition, a narrow gap of the water quality ranges is not a difference. Categories in which all three pairs of stations (1 and 2, 2 and 3, 1 and 3) in the Tam-Jin River showed difference in water quality were analyzed on TN and TP. The results of in this research suggest a right analysis in the homogeneity test of water quality data and a reasonable management of pollutant sources.

  • Atopic dermatitis (AD) has become a serious epidemic in Korean children. We aimed to investigate the association between vitamin C, E and other nutrients, and serum total IgE/specific IgE levels in children with AD. A total of 119 children (0-24 mo) diagnosed with AD were recruited for this cross-sectional study from a medical center in Seoul. A 24 h recall was used to assess dietary intakes. Serum total and six food-allergen specific IgE levels were measured by CAP-FEIA. Serum vitamin E was also measured but only in 25 out of the total 119 participants. Multiple linear regression analysis was performed to estimate the coefficients between serum IgE levels and dietary intake as well as serum vitamin E. Serum vitamin E levels showed a significantly inverse association with serum total IgE and all specific IgE levels (P < 0.05). Fat intake was inversely related with specific-IgEs for egg whites, milk, buck wheat, soy, and peanuts (P < 0.05). Positive associations were found between carbohydrate (CHO) intake and total IgE and specific IgEs to egg whites, milk, soy, and peanuts (P < 0.05). Vitamin C, E and n-3/n-6 fatty acids were not related with serum total IgE and specific IgE levels except for the association between buck wheat and vitamin E. In addition, there were no significant differences between males and females in dietary intake and serum IgE levels by student's t-test. Although dietary vitamin E showed no association with serum IgE levels, serum vitamin E drew a significant inverse relationship with serum IgE levels. The evidence seems to suggest that vitamin E may possibly lower total and specific-IgEs in children with AD, and that it is important to maintain a relatively high serum vitamin E level in children with AD.

  • This paper deals with the results for a numerical analysis of single piles and pile groups in multi-layers soil(granite soil-clay-granite soil) subjected to monotonous lateral loading using the ABAQUS finite element software. The investigated variables in this study include free head and embedded capped single pile, pile diameter (0.5m), pile length (10m), and pile groups. Numerical analyses were conducted by variation of spacing piles(s=3D, 4D, 5D) to compare the behaviour of single pile without cap and group pile. The $1{\times}3$ pile group(leading pile, middle pile, trail pile) was selected to investigate the individual pile and group lateral resistance, the distribution of the resistance among the piles. The analysis model of clay and the material of granite soil was modeled by using Druker-Prager constitutive relationship and existing treatise respectively. The pile was considered as a elastic circular concrete pile. As a result, the more pile space was extended, the value of P-multiplier is appeared to be less effective to leading pile. The lateral resistance of single-layer showed approximately 4-20% larger than the multi-layers.

  • Most efforts to improve tuberculosis treatment adherence target the patient and his or her behavior. This study examined the effects of behavioral modification training for these patients. Based on Bandura's behavioral principles of modeling, intervention strategies using a video program were devised to elicit specific patient target behaviors considered to improve patients' adherence to tuberculosis treatment regimens. A random assignment, two-group(experimental group and control group) research design including 81 subjects was used. The main outcomes measured were pill taking measured with the Medication Event Monitoring System(MEMS) Medication Cap, patients' self-efficacy, and their knowledge of tuberculosis. The findings are as follows : 1) There was a significant difference between the experimental group and the control group in patients' feelings of self-efficacy. That is, the patients who received the behavior modification program showed greater feeling of self-efficacy to initiate and change their behavior for the tuberculosis treatment regimen than the patients who did not receive the program(t=3.51, p=0.01). 2) There was a significant difference between the experimental group and the control group in patients' knowledge of tuberculosis. That is, the patients who received the behavior modification program showed higher level of knowledge of tuberculosis than the patients who did not receive the program(t=2.15, p=0.03) 3) There was a significant difference between the experimental group and the control group in patients' adherence to tuberculosis treatment regimens. That is, the patients who received the behavior modification program showed greater adherence to the treatment regimens than the patients who did not receive the program(t=5.11, p=0.00). The study findings provided useful insights into nursing practice, particularly in planning intervention strategies aimed at enhancing patients' adherence in tuberculosis that may also be relevant to other chronic diseases with patient adherence problems.

  • Near-rings considered are right near-rings and R is a near-ring. $J_0^r(R)$, the right Jacobson radical of R of type-0, was introduced and studied by the present authors. In this paper $J_1^r(R)$ and $J_2^r(R)$, the right Jacobson radicals of R of type-1 and type-2 are introduced. It is proved that both $J_1^r$ and $J_2^r$ are radicals for near-rings and $J_0^r(R){\subseteq}J_1^r(R){\subseteq}J_2^r(R)$. Unlike the left Jacobson radical classes, the right Jacobson radical class of type-2 contains $M_0(G)$ for many of the finite groups G. Depending on the structure of G, $M_0(G)$ belongs to different right Jacobson radical classes of near-rings. Also unlike left Jacobson-type radicals, the constant part of R is contained in every right 1-modular (2-modular) right ideal of R. For any family of near-rings $R_i$, $i{\in}I$, $J_{\nu}^r({\oplus}_{i{\in}I}R_i)={\oplus}_{i{\in}I}J_{\nu}^r(R_i)$, ${\nu}{\in}\{1,2\}$. Moreover, under certain conditions, for an invariant subnear-ring S of a d.g. near-ring R it is shown that $J_2^r(S)=S{\cap}J_2^r(R)$.

  • Background/Aims: Sensitization to staphylococcal superantigens (SAgs) could contribute to asthma severity. However, its relevance with eosinophilic phenotype has not yet been clarified. This study aimed to investigate associations between serum specific IgE levels to SAg and eosinophilic airway inflammation in adult asthmatics. Methods: The serum specific IgE levels to 3 SAgs, including staphylococcal enterotoxin A (SEA) and B (SEB), and toxic shock syndrome toxin-1 (TSST-1) were measured by ImmunoCAP in 230 adult asthmatic patients and 50 healthy controls (HCs). Clinical characteristics and laboratory parameters, including serum total/free IgE, and 2 eosinophil-activation markers, eosinophil cationic protein (ECP), and eosinophil-derived neurotoxin (EDN), were analyzed according to blood eosinophil counts (BEC; 150 cells/µL) and serum specific IgE levels to 3 SAgs (0.35 kU/L). Results: Asthmatic patients showed higher serum specific IgE levels to 3 SAgs than HCs (p < 0.05 for all). The serum total/free IgE levels were significantly higher in asthmatics with positive IgE responses to 3 SAgs than those without (p < 0.05 for all). There were no significant differences in clinical parameters including age, asthma severity, comorbidities, or smoking according to IgE responses to 3 SAgs. Patients with positive IgE responses to SEB (not to SEA/TSST-1) had higher serum specific IgE levels to house dust mites and ECP/EDN as well as higher BEC with positive correlations between serum SEB-specific IgE levels and BEC/ECP/EDN (p < 0.05 for all). Conclusions: These findings suggest that serum SEB-specific IgE levels could contribute to eosinophil activation as well as IgE production in adult asthma.

  • Purpose : We peformed this study to evaluate the prognostic factors and the effect of induction chemotherapy in locally advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Materials and Methods : A retrospective analysis was done for 130 patients with locally advanced NSCLC treated with curative radiotherapy alone or induction chemo-radiotherapy from January 1986 to October 1996. Eighty-five patients were treated with radiotherapy alone, forty-five with induction chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Age, sex, performance status, histopathologic type, and stage were evenly distributed in both groups. The patients were treated with 6 MV or 10 MV X-ray. Conventional fractionation with daily fraction size 1$.8\~2.0$ Gy was done. Of the patients, 129 patients received total dose above 59.6 Gy ($56\~66$ Gy, median 60 Gy). Induction chemotherapy regimen were CAP (Cyclo-phosphamide, Adriamycin, Cisplatin) in 6 patients, MVP (Mitomycin, Vinblastine, Cisplatin) in 9 patients, MIC (Mitomycin, Ifosfamide Cisplatin) in 13 patients, and EP (Etoposide, Cisplatin) in 17 patients. Chemotherapy was done in $2\~5$ cycles (median 2). Results : Overall 1-, 2-, and 3-year survival rate (YSR) for all patients were $41.5\%,{\;}13.7\%,{\;}and{\;}7\%$, respectively (median survival time 11 months). According to treatment modality, median survival time, overall 1-, 2-, and 3-YSR were 9 months, $32.9\%,{\;}10.\5%,{\;}6\%$ for radiotherapy alone group, and 14 months, $57.8\%,{\;}20\%,{\;}7.6\%$ for induction chemotherapy group, respectively (f=0.0005). Complete response (CR) to overall treatments was $25\%$ (21/84) in radiotherapy alone and $40.5\%$ (17/42) in induction chemotherapy group (p=0.09). The Prognostic factors affecting overall survival were hemoglobin level (p=0.04), NSE (neuron-specific enolase) level (p=0.004), and respense to overall treatment(p=0.004). According to treatment modalities, NSE (neuron-specific enolase) (p=0.006) and response to overall treatment (p=0.003) were associated with overall survival in radiotherapy alone group, and response to overall treatment (p=0.007) in induction chemotherapy group. The failure Pattern analysis revealed no significant difference between treatment modalities. But, in patients with CR to overall treatment, distant metastasis were found in 11/19 patients with radiotherapy alone, and 3/13 patients with induction chemotherapy and radiotherapy (p=0.07). Locoregional failure patterns were not different between two groups (10/19 vs 6/13). Conclusion : Induction chemotherapy and radiotherapy achieved increased 2YSR compared to radiotherapy alone, At least in CR patients, there was decreased tendency in distant metastasis with induction chemotherapy. But, locoregional failures and long-term survival were not improved. Thus, there is need of more effort to increasing local control and further decreasing distant metastasis.

  • The thermal resistance of the important microorganisms in takju. Korean traditional turbid alcoholic beverage, was measured and optimun heating time and temperature to achieve the commercial pasteurization of these microorganisms were examined. Most of the vegetative bacterial cells in takju were destroyed by heating at over $60^{\circ}C$, except for the spore forming organisms, which did not actively grow in takju after pasteurization. The important microorganisms for the quality deterioration of pasteurized takju were then appeared to be yeast and molds, and their thermal resistances were measured. The thermal resistances of these microorganisms changed greatly depending upon the heating method. The D values of yeast in takju were 3.5 min at $65^{\circ}C$ and 0.46 min at $80^{\circ}C$ in cap-tube, and 7.1 sec at $65^{\circ}C$ and 2.3 sec at $80^{\circ}C$ in a continuous coil heat exchanger. Those of molds were 2.7 min at 65℃ and 0.25 min at $80^{\circ}C$ in cap-tube, and 3 sec at $65^{\circ}C$ and <1 sec at $80^{\circ}C$ in the coil heat exchanger. The acidity and pH did not change at $30^{\circ}C$ for two weeks after pasteurization by heating in the coil heat exchanger at $65^{\circ}C$ for 17 sec, but the viscosity increased slightly by the heat treatment. Significant differences in sensory quality, especially the formation of burnt smell and bitterness by heating takju for 12D of yeast at $70,\;80\;and\;85^{\circ}C$, respectively, were observed and this resulted in the significant reduction in overall likeness of pasteurized takju. However, when the heating temperature was fixed to $80^{\circ}C$, the overall likeness of pasteurized takju did not affected significantly by the heating time ranging from 8D to 12D of yeast. It was concluded that the optimum pasteurization condition of takju in a continuous heat exchanger was heating at $80^{circ}C$ for 23sec(10D of yeast).

  • In order to determine the value of induction chemotherapy (CT) for inoperable head and neck cancer, the authors conducted a retrospective study. Fifty-five patients were treated with CT and radiotherapy (R-T)(CT+RT group). This group was compared with a group of 54 patients treated RT alone (RT alone group). The CT regimen used were CF (cis-platine+5-FU), CVB (cyclophos-phamide+vincristine+bleomycin), CAP (cyclophosphamide+adriamycin+prednisolone) or PVBM(cis-platine+vincristine+bleomycin+methotrexate). Toxicity from induction chemo-therapy was minimal, and toxicity was limited primarily to nausea and vomiting, mucositis and myelosuppression. The complete response (CR) rate to CT was $14.5\%$ and the partial response (PR) rate was $47.3\%$ for an overall major response rate of $61.8\%$. The major response rate at the completion of loco-regional therapy was $87.3\%$(48/55) with 32 CR ($58.2\%$) and 16 PR ($29.1\%$) for CT-RT group and $81.5\%$(44/55) with 27 CR ($50.0\%$) and 17 PR ($31.5\%$) for RT alone group (p=0.57). Median follow-up of CT-RT group was 17 months and 11 months for RT alone group. Median survival was 30 months for CT-RT group and 24 months for RT alone group (p=0.3). The overall survival rate at 2 years, 3 years and 5 years, respectively was $60.9\%,\;48.6\%\;and\;42.5\%$, for CT-RT group, and $54.9\%,\;49.9\%\;and\;49.9\%$ for RT alone group (p=0.33). Comparision between patients in both groups, stratified by overall stage, T and N stage, site, and pathology, all failed to show any significant difference in survival rates. We conclude that this retrospective study failed to demonstrate an advantage for induction chemotherapy in inoperable head and neck cancer.

  • A Pseudomonas fluorescens was selected from mushrooms and studied in both batch and fed-batch cultures in order to get maximal biomass concentration. P. fluorescens is an aerobic bacterium and antagonistic to Pseudomonas tolaasii which causes blotch disease on the mushroom cap. P fluarescens and P. tolaasii were identified by Gram staining, gelatin liquefaction, oxidase test, etc. and were characterized by pigment production, temperature sensitivity, salt tolerance and rapid pitting test, etc., Celts of P. fluorescens well in medium containing 30g/L of glucose, whereas the growth was inhibited at the glucose levels at higher than 30g/L. The highest values of specific growth rate and productivity were obtained when using 10g/1 of yeast extract. Optimum concentrations of $NH_4Cl$ and ${(NH_4Cl)}_2SO_4$ for culture were found to be 1.0g/L and 0.1g/L respectively. Optimum concentration of $MgSO_4{\cdot}7H_2O$ used as a sulfursource was 1.0g/L. It was also found that the cell concentrations reached the maximum level when grown on the medium containing 1.0g/L of $KH_2PO_4$ and 0.1g/L of $CaCl_2$. Also, the optimum culture conditions were $30^{\circ}C$ and pH 6.0. Cultivation of P. fluarescens at high dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration led to a decrease of bacterial productivity in batch culture. Maximum productivity was achieved at 40% DO concentration.
