Whole brain radiotherapy using four-field box technique with tilting baseplate for parotid gland sparing

  • Purpose: The aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy and feasibility of four-field box whole brain radiotherapy (FB-WBRT) with tilting baseplate by comparing bilateral WBRT (B-WBRT). Methods and Materials: Between March 2016 and September 2018, 20 patients with brain metastases underwent WBRT using the four-field box technique. WBRT is performed with a dose of 30 Gy in 10 fractions daily. Two computed tomography simulations per person were performed. One was in the traditional supine position for B-WBRT and the other by applying the tilting acrylic supine baseplate to elevate the head by 40° for FB-WBRT. The B-WBRT used the field-in-field technique, which is the most commonly used method in our institution. The FB-WBRT comprised anterior, posterior, and bilateral beams. A wedge was applied in anterior and posterior fields to compensate for skull convexity. Results: The average of Dmean of both parotid glands was 10.2 Gy (range, 3.8 to 17.8 Gy) in B-WBRT and 5.4 Gy (range, 2.0 to 11.7 Gy) in FB-WBRT (p < 0.05). Compared to B-WBRT, FB-WBRT reduced the mean dose of the right and left parotid glands from 10.1 Gy to 4.9 Gy and from 10.4 Gy to 5.8 Gy, respectively (p < 0.05). Further, V5, V10, V15, V20, and V25 for the parotid gland decreased significantly in FB-WBRT (p < 0.05). The Dmax and Dmean of lens decreased according to the dose-volume histogram. Conclusion: Compared to B-WBRT, FB-WBRT with a tilting baseplate is a simple and effective method that takes feature of noncoplanar beam to protect the parotid gland.

벤토나이트의 중금속 흡착에 대한 통계모델의 적용 및 열역학적 해석 (Application of Statistical Model and Thermodynamic Analysis on Sorption of Heavy Metals by Bentonite)

  • 벤토나이트의 중금속 흡착에 대한 다양한 실험적 조건을 만족시키기 위하여 박스-벤켄(Box-Benken)의 통계적 모델을 적용하였다. 모델에 의하여 pH, 중금속의 초기농도, HCO$_3$을 변수로 하고, 각 변수에 대한 농도를 3차원으로 설정하여 벳치 실험을 실시하였다. 실험에 선택된 중금속은 Pb, Cu, Zn, Cd 4종이다. 중금속의 흡착거동에 대한 각 변수들의 영향을 표면반응 분석을 통하여 3차원으로 모델링하였다. 중금속의 흡착제거에 중금속의 초기농도와 pH가 거의 비슷한 정도로 큰 영향을 미치고 중탄산은 큰 영향을 미치지 못한다. 중금속간의 흡착경쟁은 Pb>Cu>Zn>Cd의 순서를 보인다. 아울러 pH 변화가 중금속 흡착에 미치는 영향을 실험적 및 열역학적 분석을 통하여 알아보았다. 중금속의 수산화 화합물과 탄산염 복합체의 형태로 침전이 흡착제거에 중요한 변수임이 밝혀졌다. WATEQ4F 열역학 프로그램에 의한 종분포 모델링 결과가 흡착실험결과와 다소 상이함을 보이므로 프로그램의 열역학 자료의 수정이 필요하다.

An Algorithm for Splitting a Box by a Loop and Its Applications in Manufacturing

  • During the design of dies and molds, the cavity of the object is obtained by subtracting it from a surrounding rectangular block. This box is subsequently split into two halves by the parting surface. Similar problems also occur in some RP processes such as LOM, SGC, SLS and 3DP where the machine produces a block inside which the prototype is buried. Determining the orientation of the object inside the box and the corresponding parting surface taking appropriate constraints into account have been addressed by several researchers. However, given the parting surface, the problem of splitting the box development of a software package called OptiLOM (now a module of an RP software Magics 8.0), the authors realized non-triviality of this problem since the loop can spread over as many as 5 faces of the box. In this paper, the authors have tried to bring out the importance of this problem and have presented their algorithm to solve it.

Prestress and excitation force identification in a prestressed concrete box-girder bridge

  • Prestress force identification (PFI) is crucial to maintain the safety of prestressed concrete bridges. A synergic identification method has been proposed recently by the authors that can determine the prestress force (PF) and the excitation force simultaneously in prestressed concrete beams with good accuracy. In this paper, the ability of this method in the application with prestressed concrete box-girder bridges is demonstrated. A reasonable assumption is made to capture the similarity of the dynamic behavior of the prestressed concrete box-girder bridge and a beam under a certain loading scenario, and the feasibility of this method for application in a prestressed box-girder bridge is affirmed. A comprehensive laboratory test program is conducted, and the effects of PF, excitation, measuring time and uncertainties are studied. Results show that the proposed method can predict the PF and the excitation force in a prestressed concrete box-girder accurately and has a great robustness against uncertainties.

자기회귀 모형에 대한 Kalman Filter 적용에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Kalman Filter ; AR Model)

  • Box-Jenkins models have some important limitations to the procedure : (a) They require a great deal of time, efforts and expertise for the model identification. (b) They require an extensive amount of past observations to identify an acceptable model. (c) The model selected is a constant model in time. Therefore, the Kalman Filter is recommended as a technique to overcome the three problems mentioned above. The research reported here uses the Kalman Filter algorithm to propose Kalman-AR(p) model. The data analysis shows that the Kalman-AR(p) model proposed can be used to resolve the problems of Box-Jenkins AR(p)model. It is seen that the Kalman Filter has great potentials for real-time industrial applications.

P.C. 박스 교량의 긴장력 손실에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Prestress Losses of the P.C. Box Girder Bridge)

  • Until now, the evaluation of prestressing force during the survice state has received limited attention. Only initial prestressing force is estimated by reading the pressure values of a hydraulic jack or by observing the initial elongation of tendons. In this study, the initial losses and time dependent losses of prestressing force have been monitored by installing 12 vibrating wire-type load cells at the part of P.C. box bridge of Gangbyun Riverside Highway. Also comparative study was made for measured prestressing losses and estimated values. 2-dimensional analysis was performed to see the trend of prestressing losses, and the results was compared with measured ones.

한국 멸치어업의 어획량 분석과 예측 ARIMA 모델 및 스펙트럼 해석 (Analysis and Prediction of Anchovy Fisheries in Korea ARIMA Model and Spectrum Analysis)

  • 우리나라 멸치어업에서의 1971~1992년 동안의 22년간 월별 어획량 자료를 시계열 분석하여 어획량을 분석, 예측하였다. 시계열 분석은 다른 생물학적, 해양학적, 사회 경제적인 요소가 없어도 단지 어획량 자료만으로 분석과 예측이 가능하다. 첫 20년간인 1971~1990년 사이의 월별 멸치 어획량 자료를 ARIMA 시계열 모형에 적용시켜 구한 결과는 다음과 같다. 로그 (대수) 변환시켰을 때의 ARIMA 모형: $$(1-0.381B)(1-0.027B^{12}+0.141B^{24})(1-B^1)(1-B^{12})Z_t=(1-0.968B)(1-0.727B^{12})e_t$$, Box-Cox 변환시켰을 때의 ARIMA 모형: $$(1-0.431B)(1-B^{12})Z_t=(1-0.882B^{12})e_t$$, 위의 두 모형중 Box-Cox 변환시킨 것이 로그 (대수) 변환시킨 것보다 예측오차가 적었으며, Box-Cox 변환식은 $Y'=(Y^{0.58}-1)/0.58$ 이었다. 위의 두 모형 중 후자의 모형을 이용하여 1991~1992년 사이의 월별 어획량을 예측하였다. 예측 어획량과 실제 어획량과의 월별 오차범위는 1.0~63.2% (1991년에 1.6~63.2%이고, 1992년에는 1.0~60.4%)였다. 예측 어획량이 각 연도별로 148,201M/T과 148,834M/T인데 비해, 실제 어획량은 170,293M/T, 168,234M/T이었다. 2년 동안의 총어획량에 대한 오차는 12.3%였다. 또한 스펙트럼 분석은 순환변동의 주기가 2.2개월, 6.1개월, 10.2개월, 12개월, 14.7개월에서 상대적으로 큰 성분이 있음을 나타내었다 이 순환변동 성분은 적절한 ARIMA 모형을 결정하는 데도 도움이 된다.

고온기 결구상추의 수확 후 포장조건에 따른 선도유지 효과 (Effects of packaging methods on the freshness during storage of lettuce harvested in summer season of Korea)

  • 고온기 결구상추의 선도유지 및 수급조절에 효과적인 포장조건을 구명하기 위하여 연구를 수행하였다. 수확 후 결구상추를 골판지 상자, 농산물 유통상자(P box), 개별 랩핑 등 세 가지 방법으로 포장한 후 $2^{\circ}C$에 저장하며 품질변화를 분석하였다. 그 결과 개별 랩핑 한 결구상추의 중량감소율이 다른 처리구보다 적었고, 저장 중 색변화 및 갈변도가 가장 낮았다. 또한 다른 포장방법에 비하여 개별 랩핑 한 결구상추의 엽록소 함량 및 경도 감소가 적었다. 총 페놀함량 및 DPPH 라디컬 소거능의 경우 저장 중 개별 랩핑 한 결구상추의 값이 높았으나 포장방법에 따른 차이는 적었다. 저장 중 결구상추의 외관은 개별 랩핑 하였을 때 가장 우수하였으며 반으로 절단하여 골판지 상자에 포장한 결구상추는 저장 14일부터 내부갈변이 발생하여 품질이 저하되기 시작하였다. 따라서 고온기 결구상추를 수확 후 개별 랩핑하여 $2^{\circ}C$에 저장할 경우 21일간 선도유지에 효과적이며 수급조절에도 도움을 줄 수 있으리라 판단된다.

대칭형 들기 작업에서 사회심리적 요인이 근육 동원 형태에 미치는 영향 분석 (Effects of Box Color and Precision Demand on the Muscles' Recruitment Pattern in Repetitive Lifting Tasks)

  • In this study, the effects of psychosocial stress (box color and precision demand) on muscle activity were evaluated in laboratory setting. Eight subjects performed sagittally symmetric lifting tasks. Box color (yellow, black), precision demand (yes, no), and box weight (5%MVC, 10%MVC, 15 %MVC) were varied and surface EMG signals from seven muscles(medial deltoid right, biceps brachii right, lateral triceps right, latissimus dorsi right, erector spinae right, external oblique right, internal oblique right) were recorded. EMG signals were band-pass filtered($10{\sim}400\;Hz$), rectified, RMS smoothed and normalized (NEMG). Analysis of variance tests were conducted on the total NEMG (TNEMG: the sum of the seven muscles' NEMGs) and on the individual muscle's NEMGs. Box color had no effect on the TNEMG and on the seven muscles activities(p>0.05). When precision demand was required at the end point of lifts, the mean NEMG showed higher values than no precision demand conditions: TNEMG (14% increase) and medial deltoid(40% increase), biceps brachii(10% increase), lateral triceps(26% increase), latissimus dorsi(25% increase) muscles. Those increases showed more conspicuous as the box weight increased in the muscles of medial deltoid, lateral triceps, and latissimus dorsi.

High Expression of Forkhead Box Protein C2 is Related to Poor Prognosis in Human Gliomas

  • Background: Increasing evidence has indicated that high Forkhead box protein C2 (FOXC2) level is closely associated with the development, progression, and poor prognosis of a variety of tumors. However, the relationship between FOXC2 and the progression of human gliomas remains to be clarified. The aim of present study was to assess FOXC2 expression and to explore its contribution in human gliomas. Materials and Methods: Realtime quantitative PCR was performed to examine FOXC2 expression in 85 pairs of fresh frozen glioma tissues and corresponding non-neoplastic brain tissues. Associations of FOXC2 expression with clinicopathological factors and prognosis of glioma patients were statistically analyzed. Results: The relative mRNA expression of FOXC2 was significantly higher in glioma tissues than the corresponding non-neoplastic brain tissues (p<0.001). In addition, high FOXC2 expression was significantly associated with advanced pathological grade (P=0.005) and the low Karnofsky performance score (KPS) (p=0.003), correlating with poor survival (p<0.001). Furthermore, multivariate Cox regression analysis showed that high FOXC2 expression was an independent predictor of overall survival (p=0.006). Conclusions: FOXC2 may act as an oncogenic gene and represent a potential regulator of aggressive development and a candidate prognostic marker in human gliomas.
