Background: P wave dispersion(PWD) is defined as the difference between the maximum and minimal P wave duration in any of the 12 leads of the surface ECG. The prolongation of atrial conduction time and the inhomogeneous propagation of sinus impulse are known electrophysiologic features in patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation(PAF). The purpose of this study was to determine the role of P wave dispersion for the prediction of PAF and to evaluate the effectiveness of prophylactic antiarrhythmic therapy. Materials and Methods: The study population included 20 patients with a history of idiopathic PAF and 20 age and sex matched healthy control subjects. We measured the maximum P wave duration(P maximum) and P wave dispersion from 12 lead ECG. Results: P maximum and P dispersion in idiopathic PAF were significantly higher than normal control group($97.2{\pm}12$, $48.5{\pm}9$ msec vs, $76.5{\pm}11$, $21{\pm}8$ msec, respectively p<0.001, <0.001). After 12-month follow up period P maximum and P dispersion were significantly reduced than those of initial state($77.2{\pm}13$, $26.4{\pm}9$ msec vs. $97.2{\pm}12$, $48.5{\pm}9$ msec, respectively p<0.001,<0.001). Conclusion: P dispersion and P maximum were significantly different between patients with idiopathic PAF and healthy control group. Those are easily accessible, non-invasive simple electrocadiographic markers that could be used for the prediction and prognostic factors of idiopathic PAF.

Love wave and Rayleigh wave are the major elastic waves belonging to the category of the surface wave. The fact that Love wave is not contaminated by P-wave which makes Love wave superior to Rayleigh wave and other body waves. Therefore, the information that Love wave carries is more distinct and clearer than the information of Rayleigh wave. Based on theoretical research, the joint inversion analysis which is used both Love wave dispersion information and Rayleigh wave dispersion information was proposed. Purpose of the joint inversion analysis is to improve accuracy and convergency of inversion results utilizing that frequency contribution of each wave is different. This analysis technique is consisted of the forward modeling using transfer matrix, the sensitivity matrix determined to the ground system and DLSS(Damped Least Square Solution) as a inversion technique. The application of this analysis was examined through the field test.
Rayleigh wave and Love wave are the major elastic waves belonging to the category of the surface wave. The fact that Love wave is not contaminated by P-wave makes Love wave superior to Rayleish wave and other body waves. Therefore, the information that Love wave carries is more distinct and clearer than the information of Rayleigh wave. In this study, for the purpose of employing Love wave in the SASW method, the dispersion characteristics of the Love wave were extensively investigated by the theoretical, numerical and experimental approaches. The 2-D and 3-D finite element analyses for the half space and two-layer systems were performed to determine the phase velocities from Love wave as well as from both the vertical and the horizontal components of Rayleigh wave. Also, the SASW measurements were performed at the geotechnical sites to verify the results obtained by the numerical analysis. The results of the numerical analysis and the field testing indicated that the dispersion characteristics of Love wave can be an extended information to make better evaluation of the subsurface stiffness structure by SASW method.

The characteristics of slow wave structure employed for backward wave oscillators expected to be a high power microwave source are studied analyytically. The slow wave structure is a sinusoidally corrugated wall waveguide. The waveguide is designed and fabricated by cast aluminun. The dispersion relation and transmitted characteristics for microwaves are measured in the air. There exist literatures on high efficiency of enhanced radiation from backward wave oscillators involving plasma studied experimentally.
Two-dimensional S-wave velocity sections from SH-wave refraction tomography and surface wave dispersions were obtained by inverting traveltimes of first arrivals and surface wave dispersions, respectively. For the purpose of comparison, a P-wave velocity tomogram was also obtained from a P-wave refraction profiling. P and Rayleigh waves generated by vertical blows on a plate with a sledgehammer were received by 100- and 4.5-Hz geophones, respectively. SH-waves generated by horizontal blows on both sides of a 50 kg timber were received by 8 Hz horizontal geophones. The shear-wave signals were enhanced subtracting data of left-side blows from ones of the right-side blows. Shear-wave velocities from tomography inversion of first-arrival times were compared with ones from inverting dispersion curves of Rayleigh waves. Although the two velocity sections look similar to each other in general, the one from the surface waves tends to have lower velocities. First arrival picking of SH waves is troublesome since P and PS-converted waves arrive earlier than SH waves. Application of the surface wave method, on the other hand, is limited where lateral variation of subsurface tructures
is not mild.
This research deals with the wave dispersion analysis of functionally graded double-layered nanobeam systems (FG-DNBSs) considering the piezoelectric effect based on nonlocal strain gradient theory. The nanobeam is modeled via Euler-Bernoulli beam theory. Material properties are considered to change gradually along the nanobeams' thickness on the basis of the rule of mixture. By implementing a Hamiltonian approach, the Euler-Lagrange equations of piezoelectric FG-DNBSs are obtained. Furthermore, applying an analytical solution, the dispersion relations of smart FG-DNBSs are derived by solving an eigenvalue problem. The effects of various parameters such as nonlocality, length scale parameter, interlayer stiffness, applied electric voltage, relative motions and gradient index on the wave dispersion characteristics of nanoscale beam have been investigated. Also, validity of reported results is proven in the framework of a diagram showing the convergence of this model's curve with that of a previous published attempt.
Love wave and Rayleigh wave are the major elastic waves belonging to the category of the surface wave. Those waves are used to determine the ground stiffness profile using their dispersion characteristics. The fact that Love wave is not contaminated by P-wave makes Love wave superior to Rayleigh wave and other body waves. Therefore, the information that Love wave carries is more distinct and clearer than that of others. Based on theoretical research, the joint inversion analysis that uses the dispersion information of both Love and Rayleigh wave was proposed. Numerical analysis, theoretical model test, and field test were performed to verify the joint inversion analysis. Results from 2D, 3D finite element analysis were compared with those from the transfer matrix method in the numerical analysis. On the other hand, the difference of results from each inversion analysis was investigated in the theoretical model analysis. Finally, practical applicability of the joint inversion analysis was verified by performing field test. As a result, it is confirmed that considering dispersion information of each wave simultaneously prevents excessive divergence and improves accuracy.
The surface wave data obtained in a tidal flat located in the sw coast of the Korean Peninsula were used to analyse the shear wave velocity structure of the area. First, the phase velocity dispersion curves were obtained by the tau-p stacking method and the group velocity dispersion curves by a wavelet transform method and the Multiple Filtering Technique by Dziewonski. The phase velocity dispersion curves exhibited bigger errors than the group velocity curves. The results showed that the wavelet transform method was more effective in separating the fundamental and the 1st higher mode group velocity curves than the Multiple Filtering Technique. Combined use of the fundamental and the 1st higher mode group velocity dispersion curves in the inversion for the shear wave velocity structure gave better spatial resolution compared when the fundamental mode group velocity was used alone. This study indicates that the group velocity dispersion curves can be used in the inversion of Rayleigh waves for the shear wave velocity structure, especially effectively with the higher mode group velocity curves together.
Purpose: Neurocardiogenic syncope (NCS) is the most frequent cause of fainting during adolescence. Inappropriate cardiovascular autonomic control may be responsible for this clinical event. The head-up tilt test has been considered a diagnostic standard, but it is cumbersome and has a high false-positive rate. We performed a study to evaluate whether P-wave dispersion (PWD) could be a useful electrocardiographic parameter of cardiac autonomic dysfunction in children with NCS. Methods: Fifty-four patients with NCS (28 boys and 26 girls; mean age, $12.3{\pm}1.4$ years) and 55 age- and sex-matched healthy controls were enrolled. PWD was obtained as the difference between maximum and minimum durations of the P wave on standard 12-lead electrocardiography in all patients and controls Results: The value of PWD was significantly higher in the syncope group than in the control group ($69.7{\pm}19.6$ msec vs. $45.5{\pm}17.1$ msec, respectively; P<0.001). The minimum duration of P wave was shorter in the syncope group than in the control group ($43.8{\pm}16.8$ msec vs. $53.5{\pm}10.7$ msec, respectively; P<0.001). Left atrial volume was not different between the groups on transthoracic echocardiography. Conclusion: PWD on echocardiography could be used as a clinical parameter in patients with NCS.
Objective: Viscoelasticity is an essential feature of nerves, although little is known about their viscous properties. The discovery of shear wave dispersion (SWD) imaging has presented a new approach for the non-invasive evaluation of tissue viscosity. The present study investigated the feasibility of using SWD imaging to evaluate diabetic neuropathy using the sciatic nerve in a diabetic rat model. Materials and Methods: This study included 11 diabetic rats in the diabetic group and 12 healthy rats in the control group. Bilateral sciatic nerves were evaluated 3 months after treatment with streptozotocin. We measured the nerve cross-sectional area (CSA), nerve stiffness using shear wave elastography (SWE), and nerve viscosity using SWD imaging. The motor nerve conduction velocity (MNCV) was also measured. These four indicators and the histology of the sciatic nerves were then compared between the two groups. The performance of CSA, SWE, and SWD imaging in distinguishing the two groups was assessed using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis. Results: Nerve CSA, stiffness, and viscosity in the diabetic group was significantly higher than those in the control group (all p < 0.05). The results also revealed a significantly lower MNCV in the diabetic group (p = 0.005). Additionally, the density of myelinated fibers was significantly lower in the diabetic group (p = 0.004). The average thickness of the myelin sheath was also lower in the diabetic group (p = 0.012). The area under the ROC curve for distinguishing the diabetic neuropathy group from the control group was 0.876 for SWD imaging, which was significantly greater than 0.677 for CSA (p = 0.030) and 0.705 for SWE (p = 0.035). Conclusion: Sciatic nerve viscosity measured using SWD imaging was significantly higher in diabetic rats. The viscosity measured using SWD imaging performed well in distinguishing the diabetic neuropathy group from the control group. Therefore, SWD imaging may be a promising method for the evaluation of diabetic neuropathy.
