Objectives Sensory gating dysfunctions in patients with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder have been investigated through two similar methods ; P50 suppression and prepulse inhibition paradigms. However, recent studies have demonstrated that the two measures are not correlated but rather constitute as distinct neural processes. Recent studies adopting spectral frequency analysis suggest that P50 suppression reflects the interaction between gamma and other frequency bands. The aim of the present study is to investigate which frequency component shows more significant interaction with gamma band. Methods A total of 108 mood disorder patients and 36 normal subjects were included in the study. The P50 responses to conditioning and test stimuli with an intra-pair interval of 500 msec were measured in the study population. According to P50 ratio (amplitude to the test stimulus/amplitude to the conditioning stimulus), the subjects with P50 ratio less than 0.2 were defined as suppressed group (SG) ; non-suppressed group (NSG) consisted of P50 ratio more than 0.8. Thirty-five and 25 subjects were included in SG and NSG, respectively. Point-to-point correlation coefficients (PPCCs) of both groups were calculated between two time-windows : the first window (S1) was defined as the time-window of one hundred millisecond after the conditioning auditory stimulus and the second window (S2) was defined as the time-window of 100 msec after the test auditory stimulus. Spectral frequency analysis was performed to investigate which frequency band results in the difference of PPCC between SG and NSG. Results Significant reduction of PPCC between S1 and S2 was observed in the SG (Pearson's r = 0.24), compared to PPCC of the NSG (r = 0.58, p < 0.05). In spectral frequency analysis, gamma band showed "phase-reset" and similar responses after the two auditory stimuli in suppressed and non-suppressed group. However in the case of alpha band, comparison showed significantly low PPCC in SG (r = -0.14) compared to NSG (r = 0.36, p < 0.05). This may be reflecting "phase-out" of alpha band against gamma band at approximately 50 msecs after the test stimulus in the SG. Conclusions Our study suggests that normal P50 suppression is caused by phase-out of alpha band against gamma band after the second auditory stimulus. Thus it is demonstrated that normal sensory gating process is constituted with attenuated alpha power, superimposed on consistent gamma response. Implications of preserved gamma and decreased alpha band in sensory gating function are discussed.

The Maillard Reaction Products (MRPs) are chemical compounds which have been known to be effective in chemoprevention. Death receptors (DR) play a central role in directing apoptosis in several cancer cells. In our previous study, we demonstrated that (E)-2,4-bis(p-hydroxyphenyl)-2-butenal, a MRP product, inhibited human colon cancer cell growth by inducing apoptosis via nuclear factor-${\kappa}B$ (NF-${\kappa}B$) inactivation and $G_2$/M phase cell cycle arrest. In this study, (E)-2,4-bis(p-hydroxyphenyl)-2-butenal diacetate, a new (E)-2,4-bis(p-hydroxyphenyl)-2-butenal derivative, was synthesized to improve their solubility and stability in water and then evaluated against NCI-H460 and A549 human lung cancer cells. (E)-2,4-bis(p-hydroxyphenyl)-2-butenal diacetate reduced the viability in both cell lines in a time and dose-dependent manner. We also found that (E)-2,4-bis(p-hydroxyphenyl)-2-butenal diacetate increased apoptotic cell death through the upregulation of the expression of death receptor (DR)-3 and DR6 in both lung cancer cell lines. In addition to this, the transfection of DR3 siRNA diminished the growth inhibitory and apoptosis inducing effect of (E)-2,4-bis(p-hydroxyphenyl)-2-butenal diacetate on lung cancer cells, however these effects of (E)-2,4-bis(p-hydroxyphenyl)-2-butenal diacetate was not changed by DR6 siRNA. These results indicated that (E)-2,4-bis(p-hydroxyphenyl)-2-butenal diacetate inhibits human lung cancer cell growth via increasing apoptotic cell death by upregulation of the expression of DR3.
This study was carried out to evaluate cytotoxicity of the methanol extract from Sophora flavescens Ait. against L1210 (lymphocytic leukemia) and $P388D_1$ (lymphoid neoplasma) Cells in vitro. We have determined cytotoxicity by the MTT (3- (4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl-2H- tetrazolium bromide) assay. The order of cytotoxicity of Sophora flavescens Ait. extracts against L1210 and $P388D_1$ cells in vitro is as follows: Fr. 4 > Fr. 3 > Fr. 5 > Fr. 2 > Fr. 1. These results suggest that the fraction 4 of the methanol extracts from Sophora flavescens Ait. may be a valuable choice for the development of antitumor agents. In order to develop an antimicrobial agent, dried Sophora flavescens Ait. was extracted with hot methanol, and then antimicrobial activity (MIC test) was investigated. In this study, the fraction 3 of the methanol extracts from the roots of S. flavescens showed strong growth inhibition activity against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria (MIC, $3.125\;{\mu}g/ml$) such as S. mutans, S. epidermidis and P. putida. These results indicate that fractions 3 and 4 inhibit tumor cells and bacteria.

Objective : To describe the underlying causes, surgical results, and prognostic factors in thoracic stenosis causing myelopathy, retrospective analysis for 28 cases of thoracic stenosis with surgery was performed Materials & Method : Twenty-eight patients(male, 15 ; female, 13) who underwent decompressive surgery for thoracic stenosis between 1987 and 1997 were analyzed. The mean age was 49 and the mean follow-up was 30.6 months. Statistical analysis with $SPSS^{(R)}$ was performed. Chi-square test was used for the analysis of relationship between subjects and multivariate analysis with general linear model was used to find prognostic factors. Result : Degenerative spondylosis was the most common cause, and three cases were associated with systemic diseases. Decompressive laminectomy was done in 23 cases, anterior decompression in four cases, and combined decompression in one case. Ossification of ligamentum flavum was found in 18 cases, facet hypertrophy in 13, ossification of posterior longitudinal ligament in six, and ventral spur in four. Postoperatively, 16 patients improved functionally and 4 patients worsened. The group of which initial symptom duration was less than two years showed better result(p=0.003). The group with sufficient decompression and no additional proximal stenosis had better outcome(p=0.002, p=0.001). Conclusion : Chronic myelopathy caused by thoracic stenosis can be reversible with appropriate decompression.
This study was attempted to identify the emotional characteristics of temporomandibular disorder patients. The author applied one of the self-report modes of psychological measurement, Symptom Chechlist-90-Revision. The subjects were 219 TM disorder patients who visited the Department of Oral Diagnosis and Oral Medicine, Seoul National University Hospital during the period from December 1985 to September 1986. All the patients were divided into subgroup according sex, age, duration of symptoms, presence or absence of T-scores of each symptom dimension and global index. The obtained result were as follows : 1. Mean value of T-scores of each symptom dimension and global of the overall patients was within normal range. The two higher mean values of T-scores among 9 symptom dimensions were those of SOM and ANX. 2. Mean values of T-scores of females were higher than those of males in the O-C, DEP, ANX, HOS, PSY dimensions and all global indices, and there was a significant difference in the distribution of T-scores of the SOM dimension between males and female(P<0.05). 3. There was no significant difference between the subgroup under 30 years and the subgroup 30 years or older. 4. The subgroup with symptoms for 6 months or longer showed the higher mean values of T-scorers in the SOM, O-C, I-S, DEP, ANX, PHOB, PAR, PSY dimensions and all global indices compared with the subgroup with symptoms for shorter than 6 months. 5. The subgroup with pain showed the higher mean values of T-scores in all the symptom dimensions except the PAR in comparison with the subgroup with other complaints than pain, and there was a significant difference in the distribution of T-scores of the PST index between the pain subgroup and the non-pain subgroup(P<0.05). There was a significant difference in the distribution of T-scores of the PHOB dimension between the high-school graduates subgroup and the college graduates subgroup(P<0.05).
The aim of this study was to ana1yze T-cell lymphoma invasion and metastasis-inducing factor 1 (Tiam1) expression in 1ung cancer patients. A total of 204 patients with lung cancer tissue lesions were enrolled in the present study, along with 40 cases of normal lung tissue and 40 of normal fetal lung tissue. Tiam1 protein expression level was determined using intensity quantitative analysis, for comparison in lung cancer, metastatic, normal lung, and fetal lung tissue. The positive unit (PU) of Tiam1 was $13.5{\pm}5.42$ in lung cancer,$5.67{\pm}1.56$ in norma1 epithelial cells, and $5.89{\pm}1.45$ in fetal lung epithelial cells. The value in the lung cancer tissue was significantly higher than that in the normal lung tissue and the fetal lung tissue (P<0.01). The Tiam1 PU values with lymph node metastasis and without 1ymph node metastasis were $15.2{\pm}4.34$ and $12.5{\pm}4.23$, respectively, and the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05). The Tiam1 PU values in different tumor, nodes, metastasis (TNM) stages, III-IV period, and I-II phase were $14.7{\pm}4.14$ and $11.0{\pm}5.34$ (P<0.05). A correlation was found between Tiam1 expression and the age of patient, tumor size, tumor type, and tumor differentiation. Tiam1 protein expression in the lung tumor tissue is significantly higher than that in the normal lung tissue and fetal lung tissue. Tiam1 expression may be closely related to lung cancer development and metastasis.

3-Dimensional System in Package (3-D SiP) structure (Amkor calls it mPossum-molded Possum) using double side Surface Mount Technology (SMT) and double side molding was evaluated in order to achieve small/thin form factor as well as good functionality by integration and double side layout. As the new platform on laminate substrate basis, molding process was challenge in mold flow balance at top and bottom side and package warpage control over the overall assembly process. There were two types of different molding process evaluated with 1) 1-step molding which was done at both side at the same time and 2) 2-step molding which was done at the conventional molding process twice. Mold simulation helped to narrow down the material selections and parameters available before actual sample build. There were many challenges for this first trial in design/ parameter and material types but optimized them to enable this structure.

The Transmission Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) of SiOx charge storage layer with the richest silicon content showed an assignment at peaks around 2000~2300 cm-1. It indicated that the existence of many silicon phases and defect sources in the matrix of the SiOx films. The total hysteresis width is the sum of the flat band voltage shift (${\Delta}VFB$) due to electron and hole charging. At the range voltage sweep of ${\pm}15V$, the ${\Delta}VFB$ values increase of 0.57 V, 1.71 V, and 13.56 V with 1/2, 2/1, and 6/1 samples, respectively. When we increase the gas ratio of SiH4/N2O, a lot of defects appeared in charge storage layer, more electrons and holes are charged and the memory window also increases. The best retention are obtained at sample with the ratio SiH4/N2O=6/1 with 82.31% (3.49V) after 103s and 70.75% after 10 years. The high charge storage in 6/1 device could arise from the large amount of silicon phases and defect sources in the storage material with SiOx material. Therefore, in the programming/erasing (P/E) process, the Si-rich SiOx charge-trapping layer with SiH4/N2O gas flow ratio=6/1 easily grasps electrons and holds them, and hence, increases the P/E speed and the memory window. This is very useful for a trapping layer, especially in the low-voltage operation of non-volatile memory devices.

Acid mine drainage and waste of abandoned mine area have caused serious water pollution and destruction of an ecosystem because of exposing to environment without an appropriate treatment. Gwang-yang mine area also has a serious problem in the nearby residential area and waterway ecosystems. The objectives of this research are to develop the most suitable remediation system for acid mine drainage by using waste materials, and to diagnose stream environments impacted by acid mine drainage through the new ecological health assessment methodology, and thus ultimately providing a restoring methodology to mining regions. In the water system health assessment, the result of ESHI model, RBP and Karr suggested by US EPA is revised by ecological features of our country, come to ESHI score 13; 'Very poor' at some points. Together with pH value and heavy metal concentration, it's the aggravation of ecological health index caused by chemical disturbances. In the acid mine drainage treatment, we apply marine shells and slags to this system. Slags had the best removal ability for heavy metals, but pH value was more than 10 exceeding the standard for drain water. In case of marine shells, pH of treated water maintained 7 to 8, and concentrations of Fe and Zn decreased significantly after treatment.

Human Immunodeficiency Virus type 1 (HIV-l) based lentivirus vector has demonstrated great potential as gene therapy vectors mediating efficient gene delivery and long-term transgene expression in both dividing and nondividing cells. However, for clinical studies it must be confirmed that vector preparations are safe and not contaminated by replication competent lentivirus (RCL) related to the parental pathogenic virus, HIV-l. In this study, we would like to establish the method for titration and RCL detection of lentivirus vector. The titration was determined by vector expression containing the green fluorescent protein, GFP in transduced cells. The titer was $1{\times}10^7$ Transducing Unit/ml in the GFP expression assay and $8.9{\times}10^7$ molecules/ml in the real-time PCR. Also, for the detection of RCL, we have used a combination method of PCR and p24 antigen detection. First, PBS/psi and VSV-G region in the genomic DNA of transduced cells was detected by PCR assay. Second, transfer and expression of the HIV-1 gag gene was detected by p24 ELISA. In an attempt to amplify any RCL, the transduced cells were cultured for 3 weeks (amplification phase) and the supernatant of amplified transduced cell was used for the second transduction to determine whether a true RCL was present (indicator phase). Analysis of cells and supernatant at day 6 in indicator phase were negative for PBS/psi, VSV-G, and p24 antigen. These results suggest that they are not mobilized and therefore there are no RCL in amplification phase. Thus, real-time PCR is a reliable and sensitive method for titration and RCL detection of lentivirus vector.
