The trajectory analysis of boundary layer ozone data at four regional sites in the East Asian outflow regions in Japan was carried out together with boundary layer ozone data observed at Mt. Tai and Mt. Huang in the source region of central eastern China during the monsoon onset in May-June 2003 and 2004. At all sites, the influences of anthropogenic emissions from East Asia have been found. During May and June 2004, the evidences of direct pollution transport from central eastern China to Hedo, an outflow site in Okinawa Island were observed. Ozone mixing ratios associated with air masses from central eastern China averaged 45 ppb while those associated with clean air masses from the Pacific were only 14 ppb, which resulted in averaged 31 ppb increase of ozone mixing ratios during the pollution episodes from central eastern China at Cape Hedo. Using transport time analysis and averaging all ozone episodes transported from central eastern China, the ozone dilution rate of 5.4 ppb per day was roughly estimated during air masses transported from source to outflow regions at Hedo. In the regions nearby Japanese mainland, however ozone increases by long-range transports were more related to both domestic and East Asian sources as a whole.

A survey regarding ozone abatement policies and measures was conducted for 230 residents in Seoul. The main survey results of public opinion indicated that it would be better to devise new effective plans of public relation to citizen, and that national strategies for the ozone pollution abatement should be reevaluated and made up for the weak point. Especially, it would be necessary to provide for citizens precise and/or specific information regarding ozone pollution issue and guideline how to reduce ozone pollution from the household.

In this study, we analyzed how ozone pollution could be differently measured and how these different measures varied year to year and across the ten most populated cities in the United States, from 1980 to 2000. Although peak values of ozone concentration have been significantly reduced in most polluted U.S. cities for the last 20 years, the annual average values of ozone concentration have not been lowered as much as peak values. Ozone concentration data for each city shows a unique pattern of distribution, central tendency, and also there is a wide variation among different ozone measures. Two different cities with the same annual mean concentration of ozone can experience very different distributions of ozone concentration within a year. Ozone measures also show a wide margin of variability as they are estimated from different ozone monitoring sites within each city. Ozone pollution statistics can be largely varied depending on the choice of measures, monitoring sites, and averaging time period. EPA's new ozone standard of 0.08 ppm averaged over an eight-hour appears to be more stringent than the current maximum ozone standard of 0.12 ppm averaged over one hour.

The ozone concentration is one of the important environmental issue for measurement of the atmospheric condition of the country. This study focuses on applying the Autoregressive Error (ARE) model for analyzing the ozone data at middle part of the Gyeonggi-Do, Anyang monitoring site in Korea. In the ARE model, eight meteorological variables and four pollution variables are used as the explanatory variables. The eight meteorological variables are daily maximum temperature, wind speed, amount of cloud, global radiation, relative humidity, rainfall, dew point temperature, and water vapor pressure. The four air pollution variables are sulfur dioxide $(SO_2)$, nitrogen dioxide $(NO_2)$, carbon monoxide (CO), and particulate matter 10 (PM10). The result shows that ARE models both overall and monthly data are suited for describing the oBone concentration. In the ARE model for overall ozone data, ozone concentration can be explained about 71% to by the PM10, global radiation and wind speed. Also the four types of ARE models for high level of ozone data (over 80 ppb) have been analyzed. In the best ARE model for high level of ozone data, ozone can be explained about 96% by the PM10, daliy maximum temperature, and cloud amount.

In this study, methodologies for the rational organization of air pollution monitoring network were examined by understanding the characteristics of temporal and spatial distribution of secondary air pollution, whose significance would increase hereafter. The data on $O_3$ and $NO_2$ concentrations during high ozone period in 1998~1999 recorded at the nine air pollution monitoring station in Busan were analysed using principal component analysis (PCA) and cumulative semivariogram. It was found that the ozone concentration was deeply associated with the daily emission characteristics or the $O_3$ precusors, and nitrogen dioxide concentration largely depends on the emission strength of regional sources. According to the spatial distribution analysis of ozone and nitrogen dioxide in Busan using cumulative semivariograms, the number of monitoring stations for the secondary air pollution can be reduced in east-west direction, but reinforced in north-south direction to explain the spacial variability. More scientific and rational relocation of air pollution monitoring network in Busan would be needed to investigate pollution status accurately and to plan and implement the pollution reduction policies effectively.

Status of photochemical air pollution in the Greater Seoul Area (GSA) between 1990 and 1995 was assessed in terms of frequency distributions, number of days exceeding standards, average concentration and meteorological effects. In Seoul compared with other areas in Korea, daily maximum concentration was higher but average concentration was not so high due to lower daily minimum from April to October. The top 5th percentile was high especially in summer season. Average number of days exceeding 100 ppb at monitoring stations in GSA was highest in 1994, the hottest year, but it was only 4 days a year. Mean meteorological pattern of high ozone days could be summarized as low wind speeds, high temperatures, strong solar radiation, and low precipitation. Westerlies were more frequent on high ozone days and at Pangi station located in the eastside of GSA, both number of high ozone days and average concentration were high. Effect of precursor transport on the rise of ozone concentration was, however, not consistently important on the whole in GSA.

The ozone data is one of the important environmental data for measurement of the atmospheric condition of the country. In this article, the Autoregressive Error (ARE) model have been considered for analyzing the ozone data at the northern part of the Gyeonggi-Do, Uijeongbu monitoring site in Korea. The result showed that both overall and monthly ARE models are suited for describing the ozone concentration. In the ARE model, seven meteorological variables and four pollution variables are used as the as the explanatory variables for the ozone data set. The seven meteorological variables are daily maximum temperature, wind speed, relative humidity, rainfall, dew point temperature, steam pressure, and amount of cloud. The four air pollution explanatory variables are Sulfur dioxide(SO2), Nitrogen dioxide(NO2), Cobalt(CO), and Promethium 10(PM10). Also, the high level ozone data (over 80ppb) have been analyzed four ARE models, General ARE, HL ARE, PM10 add ARE, Temperature add ARE model. The result shows that the General ARE, HL ARE, and PM10 add ARE models are suited for describing the high level of ozone data.

In Korea, photochemical air pollution has drawn public attention as one of the major environmental issues since 1990s. To abate ozone and air pollution, new legislation was enacted and regulation was reinforced in conjunction with basic researches. As a result, the air quality has been much improved in terms of primary pollutant such as CO and the occurrence of extremely high ozone concentration. In Seoul, on the other hand, concentrations of ozone and exeedance hours of its national standard have increased since 2005, which is intimately coupled with $NO_2$ variations. It indicates the need for further research at long-term bases to improve our understanding on complex processes determining ozone concentrations. In this paper, the characteristics of ozone variation was analyzed with 13-year measurement data obtained in Seoul. In addition, the previous studies and their main results were summarized that have been performed in association with photochemical air pollution in Korea over the last three decades.
This paper applies the Scan-Angle Method (SAM) to the Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS) aboard Earth Probe (EP) satellite for determining tropospheric ozone based on TOMS scan geometry. In the northern tropical Africa burning season, the distribution of the SAM-derived tropospheric ozone presents a tropospheric ozone enhancement related to biomass burning. This distribution is consistent with that of fire counts observed from Along Track Scanning Radiometer (ATSR) and that of carbon monoxide, the tropospheric ozone precursor, observed from Measurements of Pollution In The Troposphere (MOPITI). However, this feature is not shown in the distribution of tropospheric ozone derived from other TOMS-based algorithms for the northern burning season. In the high latitudes, the influence of pollution in the SAM results is seen over the northern continents in agreement with carbon monoxide for northern summer when the dynamical activity is weak in the northern hemisphere.
