Stomatal closing by ozone and water stress could reduce further ozone injury by inhibition of ozone influx to the tissue. Direct effect of ozone on stomata can be explained from two aspects which are a stimulation of stomatal closing and an inhibition of stomatal opening. An increase of $Ca^{2+}$ influx into cytoplasm by ozone could stimulate potassium efflux ion channel and inhibits inward potassium ion channels. By this mechanism ozone could induce stomatal closing. On the other hand, ozone could inhibit stomatal opening by affecting the activity of $H^{+}$ dependent ATPase of the membrane in guard cells. This would inhibit proton efflux which precede stomatal opening. It is also possible that ozone could reduce the activity of photosynthesis in guard cells which lead to affect the production of osmotically active sugars and energy. Indirect effect of ozone to stomata is through the effect of $CO_2$ elevation as a result of damage of the photozynthetic machinery. This indirect effect is slower than the direct effect.
This study was carried out to find the adverse health effects of ozone by papers, the potential indoor sources of ozone by papers, and then the removal mechanism of ozone by experiments. The exposure of individuals to excessive levels of ozone both in the industrial and ambient environment is a continuing public health concern. Ozone indoors may play a role in generating secondary pollutants that may have adverse health effects. The removal efficiency of ozone was studied by (1) the effect of concentration on breakthrough time, (2) the effect of flow rate on breakthrough time, (3) the effect of adsorbent's weight on breakthrough time, (4) the effect of temperature on breakthrough time, (5) the application of Langmuir's isotherm equation in using activated carbon. The followings are the conclusions that were derived from this study. 1. In the effect of concentration on breakthrough time, the adsorption capacity of activated carbon was inversely proportional to ozone concentratuion (0.1, 0.2, 0.3 ppm). 2. In the effect of flow rate on breakthrough time, the service life of activated carbon was inversely proportional to flow rate (2, 8, 14l/min). 3. The difference in removal efficiency of ozone between weights(100 mg and 150 mg) was seen. And when weight of activated carbon was 100 mg and 150 mg, pressure loss was 4-5mmHg and 6-7mmHg, respectively. It is required to study relations among flow rate and adsorbent's weight and ventilation quantity, too. 4. Generally, Langmuir's equation, one of the oldest and most used frequently isotherm equation, applies to chemisorption. In case of ozone, when the weight of activated carbon was 70 mg and temperature 40, slope(1/a) was $6.25\times 10^{-1}$ and intercept(1/ab) was $1.9\times 10^{-4}$ (average r=0.94).

Effects of precipitation and cloud cover on high ozone days are examined by investigating the precipitation and average cloud cover before the ozone peak time within a day. High ozone days above 100 ppb in the Greater Seoul Area(GSA) for the ozone season from May to September are chosen for the analyses in terms of the surface meteorological data during 1990~1997. The result shows that the effect of precipitation on the rise of ozone concentration is definitely negative so that ozone concentration could not rise above 100ppb immediately after precipitation. But, the effect of cloud cover is associated with the variations of other meteorological parameters. The number of high ozone days with "zero" cloud cover is rather less than that with cloud cover of 1 to 4 since temperature is usually lower in "zero" cloud cover days. Furthermore, ozone concentration can rise above 100ppb even with full cloud cover when the wind is weak and the temperature is high.temperature is high.

The effect of gas composition on the discharge characteristics and the ozone production in silent discharge (SD) process was investigated. The major gas components, $N_2$, $O_2$, and $H_2O$ influence the discharge properties according to their relative magnitude of ionization thresholds and electron affinities. The generated amount of ozone increased with the discharge energy by increasing the electron mean energy. The higher oxygen content injected, the higher ozone produced. A small amount of water vapor significantly lowered the discharge onset voltage by the ionization threshold decreasing effect and high electrical conductivity. However, the further increase of water vapor contributes to decrease the electron density by the electron affinity The addition of water greatly reduced the ozone generation through the formation of OH radical and the catalytic ozone destruction process.
It is required to propose an alternatives for appropriate sludge treatment owing to persistent construction of sewage treatment plant and increase of sewage sludge quantity. In order to treat sludge more efficiently, the methods which reduce the cost of sludge treatment have been studied such as sludge reduction and conditioning. Especially ozone treatment reduces solid quantity and improves separation of solid-liquid at the same time. Therefore ozone treatment have a positive effect on reduction and stabilization of sludge. So, this study applied ozone to sewage sludge and induced cell destruction of sludge. By comparing with the correlation between thickening and dewatering, and evaluating moisture content and solubilization of cake, this study verificates the effect of process improvement for ozone pre-treatment. In J-STP case, according to ozone dose solid flux increased about 12 times from $1kg/m^2{\cdot}h$ to $12kg/m^2{\cdot}h$. Also this plant were capable to shorten thickening time from 40 minutes to 6~7 minutes. Thus it is expected to reduce volume and retention time of thickener. On pH effect factor, dewatering at pH4 was more than at pH11, $3.05{\times}10^{11}$ and $3.82{\times}10^{11}(m/kg)$. But effect of pH was analogous to ozone, $2.81{\times}10^{11}(m/kg)$. The effect of pH on thickening was similar to law sludge, $0.68(kg/m^2{\cdot}h)$, and the effect of ozone injection on thickening was the biggest, $3.45(kg/m^2{\cdot}h)$. The COD solubilization rate improved from about 5 to 30%. So it is judged that we are able to utilize most solubilized sludge to another sewage treatment plants.
As a preliminary experiment to investigate the effect of ozone sterelization on the ginseng powder, the changes of fatty acid composition and organic acid content and sensory properties in ginseng powder treated with ozone was investigated. Ginseng powder was treated with 0.5 ppm ozone for 24 hours and 48 hours, respectively. With increase in ozone treatment time, the content of crude lipid and increase. Contents of unsaturated fatty acid-linolenic acid, linoleic acid, and oleic acid, etc.-decreased with ozone treatment time, whereas saturated fatty acid or same number-stearic acid-increased odor, bitter taste, roasted taste and sweet taste were thiner with ozone treatment times, but pungent taste was thicker with those treatment. These changes of ordors and tastes of ginseng powder with ozone treatment were predicted by oxydation of lipids, flavor components and saponins.
Increasing ozone concentrations are observed over Japan from year to year. One cause of high ozone concentration in the Kanto region, which includes areas inland from large coastal cities such as metropolitan Tokyo, is the transportation of precursors by sea breezes. However, high ozone concentrations are also observed in the morning, before sea breezes approach inland areas. In this point, there would be a possibility of residual ozone existing above the nocturnal boundary layer affects the ozone concentration in the following morning. In this study, we utilized the Weather Research and Forecasting model and the Community Multiscale Air Quality model to evaluate the effect of regional precursors and residual ozone on ozone concentrations over the inland Kanto region. The results show that precursors emitted from non-metropolitan areas affected inland ozone concentrations more than did precursors from metropolitan areas. Moreover, calculated results indicate downward transportation of residual ozone, resulting in increased concentration. The residual ozone was also affected by precursors emitted from non-metropolitan areas.

The relationship between ozone-induced damages and ethylend evolution was examined in tomato plants fumigated with ozone of 0.2 $\mu\ell/\ell$. The rate of evolution of ethylent by tomato plants was enhanced by ozone fumigation. Pretreatment of leaves with aminoethoxyvinylglycine (AVG), an inhibitor of ethylene evolution, significantly inhibited the evolution of ethylene that was induced by ozone and concomitantly reduced the extent of ozone-induced visible damage to leaves. Treatment with 2,5-norbonadiene (NBD), and inhibitor of the action of ethylene, strongly reduced the extent of visible damage caused by ozone, even though it did not suppress the evolution of ethylene. These results indicated that ethylene might play an important role in ozone-induced plant injuries at relatively short terms of ozone fumigation. Next, we examined the effect of tiron, a scanvenger of the free-radical, on evolution of ethylene and leaf injury caused by ozone. Tiron treatment strongly reduced the extent of ozone-induced injury, but had not inhibitory effect on the evolution of ethylene from tomato leaves. This result suggests the involvement of free-radical, such as superoxide radicals, in induction of injuries caused by ozone.
The focus of this study was to identify and describe environmental preconceptions held by pre-service elementary teachers about three issues : greenhouse effect, ozone layer depletion and acid rain. Two hundred and twenty nine pre-service elementary teachers participated in this study. A 36 question survey was created by one of the authors. The questions focused on the cause, effects, and interactions of three environmental issues greenhouse effect of one layer depletion and acid rain. Pre-service elementary teachers answered the questions on a Likert scale. An analysis of the survey data indicated that the majority of pre-service elementary teachers possess an array of incorrect conceptions about the causes and effects of the greenhouse effect ozone layer depletion, and acid rain. and also many pre-service elementary teachers thought that there were causal relationships among the increase in greenhouse effect, the destruction of ozone layer, and the increase of acid rain.

Recently, the tropospheric ozone has gained a global attention for its adverse effect on vegetation as well as its contribution to the global warming. Although a number of studies have been carried out for the urban ozone, the effect of ozone on vegetation is still largely unknown in Korea. The present work aimed at performing the first evaluation of forest damage by ozone using the national air monitoring data from the year 2000 to the year 2005. Moreover, it also explored the relevance of adverse effect of ozone to the recent events on leaf chlorosis of black locust, Robinia pseudo-acacia, leading to early foliage widely observed in Korea since 2001. In the nineties, forest damages caused by ozone such as leaf chlorosis occurred in Europe and North America and led to invoke comprehensive field and laboratory studies. As a result, AOT40, implying the accumulated dose over a threshold 40 ppb, was developed to assess the forest damage by ozone. 19 air monitoring stations were selected across Korea to calculate AOT40 from the year 2000 to the year 2005. The calculated AOT40 generally increased during April and May and reached the maximum after May. The increase of AOT40 diminished substantially from the mid-June as the rainy season started. The calculated AOT40 in the nine rural sites from the year 2002 to th ε year 2005 ranged from 6.8 to 29.4 ppm-hr. And all the AOT40 at th ε year 2005 exceeded the critical value of 10 ppm-hr for forest damage. Morevoer the calculated AOT40 of Korea appeared higher than the AOT40 of Europe in the year 2004/2005 and comparable to the AOT40 of China in the year 2000. Despite the high levels of the calculated AOT40 since the year 2001 and the consistency of time of seasons between high AOT40 values and occurrence of chlorosis of black locust, further studies are required to conclude that the chlorosis of black locust occurred from the year 2001 to the year 2005 were resulted from a damage by ozone.
