Interpretation of tropical tropospheric ozone derivation from TOMS

  • A persistent maximum over the southern tropical Atlantic in the latitudinal tropospheric ozone distribution from the CCD method is seen in the latitudinal tropospheric ozone distribution from the TOMS-Pacific method. The tropical Atlantic paradox exists in the results of both the CCD and TOMS-Pacific methods. During the northern burning season, the latitudinal distributions in the tropospheric ozone derived from the TOMS-SAGE and TOMS-Sonde methods show higher tropospheric ozone over the northern tropical Atlantic than the southern Atlantic due to a stronger gradient in stratospheric ozone relative to that from the CCD and TOMS-Pacific methods.

활성탄 흡착, 오존 단독, 그리고 오존/활성탄 혼합공정에서 부식산의 분해 특성 (Characteristics of Degradation of Humic Acid in GAC Adsorption, Ozone Alone, and Ozone/GAC Hybrid Process)

  • 본 연구에서는 활성탄 흡착, 오존 단독, 오존/활성탄 혼합공정을 이용하여 부식산을 처리하고 부식산의 처리효율을 $UV_{254}$와 DOC를 통해 살펴보았으며, 부식산의 분해특성은 분자량 크기분포의 변화와 활성탄 표면변화를 통해 관찰하였다. 각 공정에서의 DOC 제거효율을 살펴본 결과, 활성탄 흡착공정은 약 19%, 오존 단독공정은 38%이었으나, 오존/활성탄 혼합공정에서는 약 80%로 활성탄 흡착공정과 오존 단독공정의 DOC 처리효율을 합한 것보다 훨씬 높아, 혼합공정을 도입함으로써 시너지 효과를 얻을 수 있는 것으로 나타났다. 기리고 $UV_{254}$ 감소율 역시 오존/활성탄 혼합공정에서 가장 크게 나타났다. 오존/활성탄 혼합공정에서 활성탄은 고유의 흡착제 역할뿐만 아니라 흡착된 유기물과 오존의 접촉을 촉진시키는 반응자리를 제공하는 역할을 하는 것으로 사료된다. 각 공정에서의 분자량크기분포 변화를 살펴본 결과, 활성탄 흡착공정에의 분자량 크기분포는 반응 전후에 큰 차이가 없었으며, 오존 단독공정에서는 30 kDa 이상의 분자량이 반응시간 10분 이후에는 거의 감소하지 않고 일정하였으나, 0.5 kDa 이하의 저분자량은 초기 4.8%에서 120분 처리시 12.3%로 증가하였다. 한편 오존/활성탄 혼합공정에서는 120분 처리시 30 kDa 이상 분자량이 초기 36.3%에서 3.9%로 뚜렷하게 감소하였으며, 0.5 kDa 이하의 저분자량은 초기 4.8%에서 40.1%로 크게 증가하였다.

시드니만의 오존예측을 위한 도시대기질모델의 예비검사 (Preliminary Testing of an Urban Air Quality Model for Ozone Forecasting over the Sydney Basin)

  • FThe aim of this study was to carry out a preliminary test of the air quality modelling system (HIRES-AIRCHEM) developed at The University of New South Wales, particularly with regard to the forecast ozone distribution. This was achieved by assimilating the New South Wales State Environment Protection Authority (EPA) emissions inventory, consisting of road and non-road sources, and running the system over the Sydney metropolitan area for the four day period 25-28 February 1998. During this period ozone readings exceeded the EPA's goal of 8pphm on several occasions. The model forecasts of ozone distribution verified well with the EPA's ozone readings. This result has important implications for possible future use of the system as a tool for routinely predicting and assessing air quality.

연안 도시 대기오염 물질의 농도분포 특성 (Characteristics of Concentration Distribution of Coastal Urban Air Pollutants)

  • This paper aims to find the characteristics of concentration distribution of coastal urban air pollutants. For this purpose, It was used the daily meteorological data and the hourly concentration data for $O_3$and NO$_2$ in Busan metropolitan city from 1994 to 1996. It was investigated the annual and monthly distribution of ozone and nitrogen dioxide concentration at each site in Busan, and also investigated the characteristics of concentration change of air pollutants with time under the sea breeze. As a results, the concentration of nitrogen dioxide and ozone tend to be increased every year and nitrogen dioxide concentration is higher than ozone concentration at all sites in Busan. The concentration of ozone is high in summer season and low in winter season, but the concentration of nitrogen dioxide have a reversed trend. The monthly peak concentration of ozone occurred in April and September, while the monthly minimum concentration of nitrogen dioxide occurred in August. Their trend were identified by sites near the coastline than sites stands apart from the coastline. The sea breeze occurred annual mean 81 day in Busan from 1994 to 1996. The main wind direction of sea breeze was classified into southwesterly and southeasterly. In case of southwesterly, It was pronounced the south wind and southwest wind. In case of southeasterly, the occurrence frequency of east wind was high. Especially, the concentrations of urban air pollutants, such as ozone and nitrogen dioxide, were high on time which the sea breeze flow, and the areas that ozone concentration was high moved from outside part to central part of city with time. In costal urban such as Busan, the wind direction of sea breeze is influenced the change of ozone and nitrogen dioxide concentration on time which the sea breeze flow at each site and also influenced the change of air pollutants concentration of sites on the pathway of sea breeze.

오존처리 고수율 펄프의 고해 특성(II) -고해 후 발생된 미세섬유의 리그닌 분포- (The Beating Properties of High Yield Pulp Treated with Ozone(II))

  • This research was conducted to investigate the morphological characteristics of fine fibers produced during beating process of high yield pulp treated with ozone and the distribution of lignin in the produced fine fibers. Thermomechanical(TMP) pulp and chemithermomechanical(CTMP) pulp of spruce and CTMP of white birch were beaten to reach 200$m\ell$ CSF, and then the fine fibers were observed using ultraviolet microscope. The fine fibers produced from TMP and CTMP of spruce using treated with ozone for 15 minutes were fragments of fiber surfaces or cell corners, and most of them contained lignin. However, lignin was not observed in the fibers after 15 minutes of ozone treatment. The fine fibers produced from CTMP of white birch were broken pieces or fragments of fiber surfaces or cell corners. The lignin was observed in the fibers until 5min of ozone treatment but no lignin was observed after 5 minutes of ozone treatment. Different morphological characteristics of TMP and CTMP explained both the different morphological characteristics and the distribution of lignin observed in the fine fibers produced from the beating process of TMP and CTMP treated with ozone.

The Prediction and Verification of an Urban Air Quality Model for Ozone Forecasting over the Sydney Basin

Distribution of Tropical Tropospheric Ozone Determined by the Scan-Angle Method applied to TOMS Measurements

  • This study introduces the first method that determines tropospheric ozone column directly from a space-based instrument. This method is based on the physical differences in the Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS) measurement as a function of its scan-angle geometry. Tropospheric ozone in September-October exhibits a broad enhancement over South America, the southern Atlantic Ocean, and western South Africa and a minimum over the central Pacific Ocean. Tropical tropospheric ozone south of the equator is higher than north of the equator in September-October, the southern burning season. Conversely, ozone north of the equator is higher in March, the northern burning season. Overall, the ozone over the southern tropics during September-October is significantly higher than over the northern tropics. Abnormally high tropospheric ozone occurs over the western Pacific Ocean during the El Nino season when the ozone amounts are as high as the ozone over the Africa.

Characteristics of near-surface ozone distribution

  • This study presents an analysis of the characteristics of vertical ozone distribution near the surface using ozonesonde data(l995 to 1998), plus surface ozone and meteorological data from the Pohang region. These features were examined in detail using three case studies. The first related to episodes of high surface ozone concentrations during the Spring season when the frontogenesis between the high and low pressure associated with the upper-level jet stream was found to be located near the surface. The second was a 5-day winter period(l3 -17 December, 1997) in the Pohang province when the hourly concentrations exceeded 90 ppb on several occasions owing to low-level jets(LLJs) induced by a nocturnal stable layer. Accordingly, this explains why the high surface ozone concentrations occurred at night as the ozone was transported across the zone by a strong wind speed( over 12.5 ms .1). The third case study was ozone enhancement due to photochemical reactions. In this case, the maximum concentration of ozone exceeded 60 ppb in the summer(23 -28 August, 1997). When an ozone peak appeared within the boundary layer, the occurrence frequency of a low-level jet due to the nocturnal stable layer was about 77%, similarly the occurrence frequency of a near-surface ozone peak relative to the appearance of an LLJ was about 76%. Accordingly, there is clearly a close correlation between the occurrence of LLJs and near-surface ozone peaks.

The Measures of Ozone Pollution: An Analysis of Ozone Concentration Data in USA

  • In this study, we analyzed how ozone pollution could be differently measured and how these different measures varied year to year and across the ten most populated cities in the United States, from 1980 to 2000. Although peak values of ozone concentration have been significantly reduced in most polluted U.S. cities for the last 20 years, the annual average values of ozone concentration have not been lowered as much as peak values. Ozone concentration data for each city shows a unique pattern of distribution, central tendency, and also there is a wide variation among different ozone measures. Two different cities with the same annual mean concentration of ozone can experience very different distributions of ozone concentration within a year. Ozone measures also show a wide margin of variability as they are estimated from different ozone monitoring sites within each city. Ozone pollution statistics can be largely varied depending on the choice of measures, monitoring sites, and averaging time period. EPA's new ozone standard of 0.08 ppm averaged over an eight-hour appears to be more stringent than the current maximum ozone standard of 0.12 ppm averaged over one hour.

  • The purpose of this study is to understand distribution of ozone concentration in the south coastal region of Korea by evaluating ozone spatial distribution in the upper air using aircraft. Sampling was carried out from May to August in 2009. The average concentration of ozone in the upper air was ranged from 32.3~90.8 ppb with its maximum concentration of 132 ppb. When it comes to the spatial distribution of ozone, ambient concentration was high in the air, 1,000 m and 500 m above the southern sea near the Gwangyang Bay area and emission sources, respectively. Daily mean concentration of NOy was 6.7~24.2 ppb and that of CO was 0.152~0.487 ppm. In addition, the concentration was appeared to be relatively high in the upper air of industrial regions and the southern seas. Meanwhile, the concentration of both $NO_y$ and CO was high in the upper air of the emission sources regardless of latitude. As for PAN, its daily mean concentration ranged between 0.1 and 0.6 ppb with overall mean concentration of 0.2 ppb. The average concentration of VOCs was 48 ppb, and the concentration of toluene and m,p-Xylene were higher than other components.
