  • This experiment were carried out to investigate the effect of the rice bran added into spawn various amounts on the cultivation. Our results show that 10 to 20 percent addition of the rice bran as a supplement results in a good mycelial growth and density. However we didn't find a significant variance among the different species of oyster mushroom using poplar sawdust as a medium. When it inoculated spawn with various amounts of rice bran on the medium of rice straw, the mycelial density was increased according to the increase of the added supplement, while there was no significant in the mycelial growth among the treatments. Through the field test it was showed that 15 to 20 percent addition of the supplement results in the highest yield, the shortest days from spawing to pinhead, and the lowest infection rate.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the optimum level of cottonseed meal in bottle cultivation of oyster mushrooms. Mycelial growth was slightly slower than that of the control at a cottonseed meal level ${\leq}10%$. Pileus diameter and thickness were highest at 14%, and stipe diameter was highest at 12% cotton seed meal. The hardness of pileus and stipe was greatest at 16% cotton seed meal. L-values tended to be lower at low levels of cotton seed meal, but the a- and b-values showed no significant difference among the treatments. The yield of fruiting body was 147.2 g/850 ml in the control and slightly higher at 147.6 g/850 ml using 12% cotton seed meal.

  • Crassostrea gigas were fermented using L. brevis BJ20 to prepare fermented oyster extract (FO). The participants of this study were randomly assigned to FO and placebo (CON) groups. The FO group was given 1.0 g of FO supplementation and the CON group was given sucrose each day for eight weeks. The effects of FO supplementation on body composition, muscula r strength, and blood factors associated with muscle growth were assessed. The FO supplement was enriched with arginine (6,183.3 mg), phenylalanine (217.9 mg), leucine (122.6 mg), isoleucine (59.8 mg), valine (16.4 mg), and γ-amino butyric acid (GABA, 1,053.7 mg). The total fat was significantly decreased in the FO group compared with the CON group (p < 0.05). 60D/S Ext.T/Wo rk and 60D/S Flex.T/Work concomitantly with 60D/S Flex.PeakTQ/BW were significantly increase d by FO treatment compared to CON group (p < 0.05). However, posture stability was not significa ntly different between the groups. The levels of angiotensin-converting enzyme were significantly decreased within the FO group (p < 0.05). The FO group showed significantly decreased levels of tumor necrosis factor-α and increased levels of human growth hormone compared with the CON group (p < 0.01). The levels of insulin-like growth factor-1 increased (p < 0.01) in the FO group while that of creatine kinase and triglyceride decreased significantly compared with the CON group (p < 0.05). These results demonstrated that FO supplementation is effective in preventing sarcopenic obesity and maintaining and strengthening muscular function in elderly wom en. Hence, FO supplements can be used as functional ingredients for these benefits.

  • The present study aimed at selecting a cost-effective substrate for king oyster mushroom based on the growth characteristics of fruiting body for use as a basic resource to ensure stable production on farms. Compositional analysis of substrates manufactured with different materials in each process revealed that the total carbon content was 42.24-48.22% higher and the total nitrogen content was 1.7-2.29% higher in the processed lot than in the control (i.e., substrate used by the farmhouse; 40.86% and 1.39%, respectively). Meanwhile, the carbon-to-nitrogen ratio was the highest in the control (27.9% vs. 19.12-27.88% in the processed lot). When cultured for 28 days, the mycelium growth was 11.5 and 11.3 mm in substrates 1 and 6, respectively, indicating the fastest growth; meanwhile, the values were 10.1-10.3 mm in the control and substrate 11, showing a similar tendency. Mycelial density did not differ significantly among the processed lots. Yield per bottle was higher in substrates 8 (205.95 g/bottle), 7 (178.51 g/bottle), and 11 (170.63 g/bottle) than in the control (152.2 g/bottle). Fruiting body quality was comparable to controls in all processed lots. Overall, economic effects, such as substrate material prices, should be analyzed, and stability evaluations, such as residual pesticide and harmful microorganisms, should be undertaken along with further detailed examination to ensure safe and stable production on farms.

  • Nitrogen flux release from organically enriched sediments into overlying water, which may have significantly influence on water quality and increasing continuous eutrophication. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the remediation efficiency of oyster shell powder and its treated product into organically enriched sediment in terms of nitrogen flux, organic matter, chlorophyll-a, pH and dissolved oxygen (DO). The TOSP was mainly composed of CaO2. The application of TOSP into the sediment has increased the pH, DO and significantly decreased the concentrations of NH4+-N and T-N compared to other basins. On the other hand, nitrate was enriched with the addition of treated oyster powder, an oxygen releasing compound on both phases. Furthermore, chlorophyll-a was found to be increasing with time in the control basin meanwhile it dropped drastically with the addition of TOSP, which implied on the repression of algal growth owing to blockage of nitrogen source migrating from the sediment. This study has shown that the TOSP was effective to improve sediment-water quality, diminish eutrophication and control harmful algae blooms in a marine environment. Therefore, it is a good reference as an effective environmental remediation agent.

  • Although there were differences depending on strains and environmental conditions, virus infected oyster mushroom, Pleurotus florida showed slow growth on sawdust and rice straw substrates. Many harmful microorganisms occurred on the cultural bed of virus infected isolates. Pinhead formed too densely or too rarely sometimes. Stipes of the mushrooms were long slightly bent with small cap. The virus infected mushrooms formed branch on their stipes. The first pinheading days of the infeeted mushroom were later than that of healthy culture. The loss of fruit body yield was about 30% compared with that of virus free culture. Spores which contaminated by viruses damaged more seriously than the other source. The authors would like to call these symptoms as a new disease in oyster mushroom culture in the world.

  • This study investigated the prevalence of Vibrio parahaemolyticus in the oyster Crassostrea gigas, which is commonly consumed raw. The presence of virulence factors and the antimicrobial susceptibility of isolates were also investigated. The overall prevalence rate of V. parahaemolyticus in oysters was 37.5% (36/96) and the range of concentrations was 30-11,000 MPN/100 g. PCR-based assays indicated that 9.6% (11/115) of the isolates were positive for the thermostable direct hemolysin-related hemolysin gene (trh), while none of the isolates were positive for the thermostable direct hemolysin gene (tdh). The Multiple Antibiotics Resistance (MAR) index was measured for 16 common antimicrobial agents and 46.1% (53/115) of the isolates had a MAR index > 0.2. The MAR index ranged from 0.07 to 0.73. The highest MAR index was observed with strain s150608, isolated in June 2015, which exhibited resistance to 11 antimicrobial agents. Our results demonstrate that oysters are high-risk sources of V. parahaemolyticus, although no antimicrobial agent was being used to promote growth or to treat bacterial infections in the sampled oyster-growing areas.

  • In this study, temperature and relative humidity during growth of fruit body were applied to oyster mushroom (Pleurotus ostrestus) to elucidate the prolongation effect of storage. Although there were not big differences among conditions of cultivation, weight loss and change of pileus color were slight increased and hardness and springness of fruit body were little decreased with storage period. When whole mushrooms (250~300g) were packaged with wrap and stored at $4{\pm}1^{\circ}C$, the shelf life of the oyster mushrooms were cultivated at $16^{\circ}C$ and at $13^{\circ}C$ was 18 day and 24days, respectively. Therefore, it was elucidated that the treatment of low-temperature at the step of fruit body development affected extension of shelf life in oyster mushroom.

  • Isolates of the different species groups of Trichoderma from the mushroom culture beds were identified according to Rifai's classification and influence of antibiotics produced by them against the oyster mushroom was examined. Trichoderma islolates were identified as Trichoderma hamatum, Trichoderma viride and Trichoderma koningii. Among the Trichoderma isolates, fungistatic action of Trichoderma viride was found to be most remarkable. Pleurotus ostreatus and Pleurotus sajor-caju were the most susceptable of the edible mushrooms tested, followed by Lentinus edodes, Flammulina velutipes and Auricularia auricula. A needle-shaped crystal gained from the chloroform extract of the culture filtrate of Trichoderma viride repressed distinctively the mycelial growth of the oyster mushroom. The grade of repression of the crystal at 500ppm and 1/10 aequous solution of the chloroform extract against the oyster mushroom, seemed equal to that of cycloheximide at $100{\sim}200ppm$.
