We examined physiological responses related to the survival, oxygen consumption and filtration rate of the blood cockle, Tegillaarca granosa as a result of salinity changes. The 44-day $LS_{50}$ (median lethal salinity) at $10^{\circ}C$ for adult and juvenile was 15.8 (confidence limits 13.5-18.2 psu) and 16.2 (confidence limits 14.1-18.4 psu) psu respectively, whereas the 11-day $LS_{50}$ at $25^{\circ}C$ for adult and juvenile was 16.8 psu (confidence limits 12.9-21.2 psu) and 22.4 (confidence limits 20.5-24.7 psu) psu respictively. In conditions of decreasing salinity, Oxygen consumption and filtration rates decreased or varied irregularly as salinity decreased. The results of this study could prove important in investigating causes of mass mortality and managing shellfish aquaculture farms.
The oxygen consumption of fresh and aged slices of potato tuber was 40.6 and 168.0 ,$0_2$$\mu$l/g fr $wt{\cdot}h$, respectively. After initial burst of oxygen consumption within 2 minutes(i.e., 40% for fresh and 12% for aged slices) in the treatmentof $50{\mu}M$ alantolactone, gradual decrease of respiration rate was observed during 3 hours of incubation. In case of the aged slices the initial burst of oxygen consumption was not observed by salicylhydroxamic acid (SHAM) or KCN. The combined effect of SHAM and alantolactone showed increase of 12%, while SHAM and KCN combination showed 60% decrease. In addition, the lipophilicity of cell membrane of onion inner epidermis was increased by lantolactone treatment. The results suggest that the primary effect of alantolactone on the cellular respiration may be associated with an alteration of lipophilic phase of cell membrane and a consequent increase of electron flow throuh the cytochrome system.
Oxygen is a key substrate in animal cell metabolism and its consumption is thus a parameter of great interest for monitoring and control in animal cell culture bioreactor. The use of a gas-permeable membrane offered the possibility to provide the required quantity of oxygen into the culture. while avoiding problems of foaming or shear damage generally linked to sparging. For determining the optimum DO control strategy of this gas-permeable membrane aeration bioreactor, the oxygen transfer rate coefficient was measured with varying $N_2$ ratio in inlet air. The results showed that an increasing mass flow rate of nitrogen reduced the $K_La$ value. and 5% nitrogen in air did not result in any oxygen limitation.
The ark shell, Scapharca broughtonii were collected from the Jinhae bay in Kyungnam, Korea from April 2006 to October 2007. To assess how much they have tolerance against hypoxia under the compound condition of temperature and salinity, survivorship, oxygen consumption rate and external features of Scapharca broughtonii were measured, The 7 days-$LC_{50}$ of dissolved oxygen (DO) for Scapharca broughtonii at $15^{\circ}C$-ordinary sea water and $26{\pm}1$ psu was 1.98mg/L (confidence limit: 1,45-2.39 mg/L) and 2.63mg/L (confidence limit: 1.76-3.37mg/L) respectively. Whereas 3 days-$LC_{50}$ at $25^{\circ}C$-ordinary sea water was 3.89mg/L (confidence limit: 3.36-4.55 mg/L) and 4 days-$LC_{50}$ at $25^{\circ}C-26{\pm}1$ psu was 3.74mg/L (confidence limit: 3.19-4,43 mg/L). Oxygen consumption rate with each experimental group was decreased during the period exposed to hypoxia. To recovery, they were replaced to ordinary and oxygen consumption rate was increased a little, but all died, The color of the umbo of shell in Scapharca broughtonii was changed dark during hypoxia. These data will provide important fundamental information for examining the causes of mass mortality of shellfish in the summer.
Oxygen consumption of marine fishes according to different water temperatures, fish population densities and body weights was measured in the respiratory chamber for the following six species: the olive flounder Paralichthys olivaceus, the tiger puffer Takifugu rubripes, the rockfish Sebastes schlegeli, the sea bass Lateolabrax Japonicus, the red seabream Pagrus major and the black seabream Acanthopagrus schlegeli. Also the lethal concentration of dissolved oxygen in them was determined. Oxygen consumption in each fish species increased as the water temperature increased. The relationship between the oxygen consumption rate $(Oc,\;ml/kg{\cdot}\;hr)$ and the water temperature (T,$^{\circ}C$) for each species appeared as the following equations demonstrate; olive flounder: Oc=34.0515T-339.5987 $(r^2=0.9730)$, tiger puffer: Oc=34.4941T-479.8732 $(r^2=0.9483),$ rockfish: Oc=44.7970T-634.2627 $(r^2=0.9718),$ sea bass: Oc=26.1488T-318.0633 $(r^2=0.9316),$ red seabream: Oc=61.1020T-722.8926 $(r^2= 0.9805),$ black seabream: Oc=75.1460T-947.9370 $(r^2=0.9392).$ The of gen consumption of fish with different population densities decreased as the number of fish increased. As the body weight of the olive flounder increased, the mass-specific oxygen consumption decreased. The relationship between oxygen consumption and body weight (W; g) was expressed as Oc=2532.0268W-0.6565 $(r^2=0.9229)$. The levels of lethal dissolved oxygen in the olive flounder, rockfish, tiger puffer and red seabream were 0.66, 0.79, 0.75 and 1.36 m1/1, respectively.
The sudden drop of water temperature in winter is very threatening factor that affects the productivity of farmed fish and the management in aquafarm. In this study, we investigated the effect of low temperature on the survival, oxygen consumption and stress responses of parrotfish Oplegnathus fasciatus due to acute drop of water temperature. The survival rate of parrotfish Oplegnathus fasciatus was 5% at 6℃, 95% at 8℃ and 100% at 10℃ on the 4th day of exposure in each experimental temperature. Low-lethal temperature for 4days of parrotfish Oplegnathus fasciatus (4 day-LT50) was 6.99℃ (confidence limit, 6.55-7.42℃). Oxygen consumption rate was significantly decreased with decreasing water temperature. Temperature coefficient (Q10) was found to be 4.0 between 10℃ and 8℃ and 0.39 between 8℃ and 6℃. As a result of investigating the stress response according to the drop in water temperature, the concentration of SOD (Superoxide dismutase), cortisol, glucose, total Ig, AST (Aspartate) and ALT (Alanine aminotransferase) increased with decreasing of water temperature. This study would be useful for the management of temperature about cultured fish.
[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to compare the excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC) between different types of exercises in women with normal weight obesity (NWO). [Methods] Nine university students with NWO having body mass index <25 kg/m2 and body fat percentage >30% participated in the study. First, continuous exercise (CEx) on an ergometer for 30 minutes at 60% of maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max) and interval exercise (IEx) at 80% VO2max for 2 minutes were performed. This was followed by exercise performed at 40% VO2max for 1 minute and at 80% VO2max for 3 minutes, performed 6 times repeatedly for a total of 26 minutes. The accumulation of short duration exercise (AEx) was performed for 3-bouts of 10 minutes each at 60% VO2max. [Results] The major findings were as follows: energy consumption during the exercises showed no significant difference between CEx, IEx, and AEx; EPOC was higher in IEx and AEx as compared to CEx for all dependent variables (e.g. total oxygen consumption, total calorie, summation of heart rate, and EPOC duration); and the lipid profile showed no significant difference. [Conclusions] Our study confirmed that when homogenizing the energy expenditure for various exercises in NWO individuals, EPOC was higher in IEx and AEx than in CEx. Therefore, IEx and AEx can be considered as effective exercise methods for increasing energy expenditure in NWO females.
[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to confirm that the difference in excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC) during exercise of the spending the same calories between the continuous and interval exercise. [Methods] Thirty-four healthy college students who did not regularly exercise volunteered to participate in our study. Continuous exercise was performed on an ergometer for 30 min at 60% of maximal oxygen consumption (VO2 max). Interval exercise was performed on a cycle ergometer at 80% VO2 max for 2 min initially, followed by 40% VO2 max for 1 min, and 80% VO2 max for 3 min. This was repeated six times for a total of 26 min. [Results] The major findings were as follows: (1) energy consumption during exercise was not significantly different between continuous exercise and interval exercise groups; (2) EPOC was higher in interval exercise than in continuous exercise for all dependent variables (i.e., total oxygen consumption, total calories, summation of heart rate); and (3) there were no significant differences in the lipid profile between continuous and interval groups. [Conclusions] Our study confirmed that after equalizing energy expenditure for continuous and interval exercise on a cycle ergometer in subjects in their twenties, interval exercise results in higher EPOC than continuous exercise. These data suggest that interval exercise may be more effective than continuous exercise in reducing body fat, for a given amount of energy expenditure.
The NOx emission characteristics with oxygen enrichment in nonpremixed counterflow and coflow jet flame of $CH_4$ fuel have been investigated numerically. A small amount of nitrogen is included in oxygen-enriched combustion, in order to consider the inevitable $N_2$ contamination by air infiltration. The results show that the initial increase of NO with increasing oxygen enrichment is due to increasing temperature and residence time, while its subsequent decrease above 75% oxygen is due to decreasing the consumption rate of nitrogen. When oxygen addition exceeds 30%, Thermal NO gradually becomes the dominant production pathway and Prompt NO becomes negative pathway for net NO production rate. It is also seen that Thermal NO plays an important role in NO reduction when strain rate increase in oxygen-enriched combustion. Finally, the results of EINOx with oxygen enrichment in coflow jet flame show the similar profile with those of conterflow flame. It is confirmed that, with leakage of 1% nitrogen in the oxidizer stream, the corresponding EINOx is eight times of that emitted from regular $CH_4$/Air flame.
