To evaluate the biological response of sea squirt Halocynthia roretzi with different body size to heavy metals and its suitability for ecotoxicity assays, the effects of Cr, Cu and Zn on its clearance and oxygen consumption rates were investigated. Clearance and oxygen consumption rates of H. roretzi with various body sizes were calculated at different metal concentrations. Both clearance and oxygen consumption rate were negatively correlated with body sizes. Clearance rate of H. roretzi decreased gradually with increasing concentration of heavy metal, the decreasing rate was in an order of Cr>Cu>Zn. The oxygen consumption rate first increased at low metal concentration (below $100{\mu}g\;L^{-1}$) and then decreased rapidly with increasing metal concentrations. The decreasing rate was in an order of Cu>Cr=Zn. There was a trend that the clearance rate and oxygen consumption rate decreased drastically under a concentration of $400{\mu}g\;L^{-1}$, and then decreased smoothly when the metal ion concentration increased continually. So the oxygen consumption and clearance rate at a concentration of $400{\mu}g\;L^{-1}$ Cu could be thought as a suitable biological tool for exotoxicology analysis.
This study was undertaken to obtain more detailed knowledge of the oxygen consumption rate of chick embryos, of the relationship between the increasing rate of embryo weight and that of oxygen consumption, of the daily increase of oxygen consumption by that of embryo weight, and of the metabolic rate of the White Leghorn eggs. The results obtained are summarized as follows. 1. The average oxygen consumption rate of the chicken embryo at the 3rd day of incubation is 0.8ml/h, STPD. It is strongly suggested that this value can used as a physiological criterion to classify the fertilized and unfertilized eggs, on the other hand oxygen consumption rate of the fertilized eggs reaches a plateau between the 18th and 20th days. 2. There exists a parallel relationship between the increasing rate of embryo weight and that of oxygen consumption rate during the incubation period. 3. There are not exist a parallel relationship between the daily increase of embryo weight and that of oxygen consumption during the whole incubation period. 4. The metabolic rate of chicken embryo(ml/h/g) is highest in the early stage of incubation and it started to decrease sharply until the 8th day follow by slow decrease thereafter.
The filtration rate and oxygen consumption of Anadara granosa bisenensis were measured at 4 different temperature (10$^{\circ}C$, 15$^{\circ}C$, 20$^{\circ}C$, and 25$^{\circ}C$) and 4 different salinity levels (20, 25, 35, and 40 psu), using an direct method under laboratory conditions. The samples were divided into two groups: a large-sized group (shell length: 34.58 ${\pm}$ 2.23 mm, body weight: 12.43 ${\pm}$ 0.44 g) and a small-sized group (shell length: 20.60 ${\pm}$ 0.85 mm, body weight: 4.41 ${\pm}$ 2.30 g). Filtration rate and oxygen consumption increased with the increase of various temperatures and salinity levels. Also, the filtration rate and oxygen consumption of the small-sized group were higher than those of the large-sized group. These results indicate that the filtration rate and oxygen consumption of Anadara granosa bisenensis depends on environmental conditions, especially on water temperature and salinity.
The present experiment was conducted to investigate the rate of oxygen consumption in relation to the several amino acids in the Mang-Kong frog ,Gallula tornieri VOGT. 1. When the liver tissue was suspended in the Ringer's solution (0.85% NaCl), the amount of oxygen consumption per hour was 0.043$\mu$l/mg , whereas when it was suspended in M/15, pH 5.8 phosphate buffer the oxygen consumption reached 0.93$\mu$l/mg. 2. When 0.5ml of 1% alanine and 0.5ml of 0.5% arginine were used as respiratory material the amount of oxygen consumption increased remarkably, while on the other hand glycine showed little influence on the amount of oxygen consumption. 3. When 0.5ml of 0.1% , 0.5% alanine-arginine mixture, 0.5ml of 0.1% , 0.5% alanine-glycine mixture and 0.5ml of 1 % arginine-glycine were added the oxygen consumption in the liver tissue increased somewhat in comparison to the case in which single amino acid was used. 4. Glycine appeared to have influence on the respiration of the liver tissue but the amount of oxygen consumption increased as the concentration of arginine-glycine mixture increased, whereas the rate of oxygen consumption increased remarkably as alaninie-glycine mixture decreased. It was evidenced that in the combination of alanine-arginine the rate of oxygen consumption increased as the concentration of the mixture decreased and vice versa.
The objective of this study was to develop a model for safe work load based on a physiological model of metabolic energy of manual material handling tasks. Fifteen male subjects voluntarily participated in this study. Lifting activities with four different weights, 0, 8, 16, 24kg, and four different working frequencies (2, 5, 8, 11 lifts/min) for a lifting range from floor to the knuckle height of 76cm were considered. Oxygen consumption rates and heart rates were measured during the performance of sixteen different lifting activities. Simplified predictive equations for estimating the oxygen consumption rate and the heart rate were developed. The oxygen consumption rate and the heart rate could be expressed as a function of task variables; frequency and the weight of the load, and a personal variable, body weight, and their interactions. The coefficients of determination ($r^2$) of the model were 0.9777 and 0.9784, respectively, for the oxygen consumption rate and the heart rate. The model of oxygen consumption rate was modified to estimate the work load for the given oxygen consumption rate. The overall absolute percent errors of the validation of this equation for work load with the original data set was 39.03%. The overall absolute percent errors were much larger than this for the two models based on the US population. The models for the oxygen consumption rate and for the work load developed in this study work better than the two models based on the US population. However, without considering the biomechanical approach, the developed model for the work load and the two US models are not recommended to estimate the work loads for low frequent lifting activities.
Recently, several approaches have been used to measure the oxygen consumption rates of individual embryos, but relationship between oxygen consumption and pregnancy rates of Hanwoo following embryo transfer has not yet been reported. In this study, we investigated the correlation between oxygen consumption rate and pregnancy rates of Hanwoo embryo using a SECM. In addition to, the expression of apoptosis-related genes was determined using real-time PCR by extracting RNA according to the oxygen consumption of in vivo embryo. First, we found that the oxygen consumption significantly increased in blastocyst-stage embryos (blastocyst) compared to early blastocyst stage embryos, indicating that oxygen consumption reflects the embryo quality (Grade I). The oxygen consumption or GI blastocysts were significantly higher than those of GII blastocysts ($10.2{\times}10^{14}/mol\;s^{-1}$ versus $6.4{\times}10^{14}/mol\;s^{-1}$, p<0.05). Pregnant rate in recipient cow was 0, 60 and 80% in the transplantation of embryo with the oxygen consumption of below 10.0, 10.0~12.0 and over $12.0{\times}10^{14}/mol\;s^{-1}$, respectively. Apoptosis regulatory genes, Hsp-70.1 were significantly increased in over-10.0 group than below 10.0 group but in Caspase-3, Bax and P53 gene, there was no significant difference. In conclusion, These results suggest that measurement of oxygen consumption maybe help increase the pregnant rate of Hanwoo embryos.
We measured oxygen microprofiles using an oxygen microelectrode in Ganghwa intertidal flat in April and September. Oxygen consumption rate was calculated by using three different methods based on the oxygen microprofiles. The method using the PROFILE software was thought to be the most reliable among the three methods. The oxygen consumption rates calculated at station D1 by using the PROFILE software were 10.5 and 6.27mmol $m^{-2}d^{-1}$ in April and September, respectively. At station D2, they were 10.9mmol $m^{-2}d^{-1}$ in April and 5.39 mmol $m^{-2}d^{-1}$ in September. There was little spatial variation, but large seasonal variation, with almost two times larger values in April than in September. The higher rate in April is ascribed to higher oxygen concentration in the seawater and higher organic carbon content in the surface sediments, which probably accelerate oxygen consumption for organic matter decomposition in the sediments. Aerobic remineralization rates estimated from the oxygen consumption rates ranged from 4.14 to 8.07 mmol C $m^{-2}d^{-1}$ in Ganghwa intertidal flat, which were much lower than the anaerobic remineralization rate.
Oxygen consumption rate has been determined to study the effect of 'Gal Geun Tang' upon stress resistance of rats. The oxygen consumption rate of liver tissue increased slightly when normal rats were given the Gal Geun Tang infusion only. When rats were given the infusion after an injection of typhoid vaccine, the elevated boby temperature and oxygen consumption rate due to typhoid vaccine fell to normal level. From this result, it is concluded that 'Gal Geun Tang' has a function that may normalize abnormally strained liver metabolism. Oxygen consumption rate of the rats significantly increased when rats were exposed to cold condition. However, under the same condition it rather maintained the normal consumption rate when the rats were given previously "Gal Geun Tang". It is suggested that 'Gal Geun Tang' has an effects that impairs the immune response from cold stress. The rats that were given Cinnamomi Ramulus('Ge Ji Tang') showed less effect than the group of 'Gal Geun Tang'.
This study was carried out to examine the effects of bis (tribytyltin)oxide (TBT), endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs). on the changes of survival, growth and oxygen consumption rate in the oliver flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus. Oliver Flounders were exposed to sublethal concentration of TBT (0, 1.67, 3.20, 6.30 and 12.50 $\mu\textrm{g}$/L) during 6 weeks. Survival rate was decreased in a concentration and exposure period-dependent way and suddenly the reduction of more than 20% occurred at TBT concentration greater than 3.20 $\mu\textrm{g}$/L. after exposure 6 weeks. Growth rate and feed efficiency significantly decreased at concentration greater than 3.20 $\mu\textrm{g}$/L. Oxygen consumption rate was also decreased in a concentration-dependent way and significantly decreased to 17,48 and 67% than that of the control at the TBT concentration of 3.20, 6.32 and 12.50 $\mu\textrm{g}$/L, respectively. This study revealed that high TBT concentration ($\geq$3.20 $\mu\textrm{g}$/L) reduced growth and oxygen consumption rates of the juvenile oliver flounder suggesting potential influence on the natural mortality of Paralichthys olivaceus in the coastal areas.
Effect of mercury (Hg) toxicity on survival, growth, feed efficiency and oxygen consumption were examined in the juvenile olive flounder. Paralichthys olivaceus. Fishes were exposed to sublethal concentrations of Hg ranging from 0 to 0.13mg/L for 6 weeks. Hg reduced survival rate in a concentration and exposure period-dependent way and suddenly reduction occurred at Hg concentrations greater than 0.05mg/L after 6 weeks. Growth rate and feed efficiency also significantly decreased at greater than 0.028 and 0.05 mg/L respectively. Oxygen consumption rate was significantly decreased to 25 and 32% than that of the control at the Hg concentration of 0.05 and 0.13 mg/L respectively. These results suggest that Hg toxicity inhibit physiological function including growth, feed efficiency and oxygen consumption in the juvenile olive flounder, resulting in survival failure at high concentration.
