Characteristics and Economic Evaluation of a CO2-Capturing Repowering System with Oxy-Fuel Combustion for Utilizing Exhaust Gas of MCFC (MCFC 배기가스를 이용하는 순산소연소 $CO_2$ 회수형 발전시스템의 특성과 경제성 평가)

  • The scale of 2.4 MW MCFC was taken to construct a high-efficiency and economical power generation system without CO2 emission into the atmosphere for utilizing its exhaust gas. The conventional steam turbine power generation system (STGS) was evaluated and the net generated power (NGP) was estimated to be only 133 kW and the STGS is not economically feasible. A CO2-caputuring repowering system was proposed, where low temperature steam (LTS) produced at HRSG by using exhaust gas from MCFC is utilized as a main working fluid of a gas turbine, and the temperature of LTS was raised by combusting fuel in a combustor by using pure oxygen, not the air. It has been shown that NGP of the proposed system is 264 kW, and CO2 reduction amount is 608 t-CO2/y, compared to 306 t-CO2/y of STGS. The CO2 reduction cost was estimated to be negligible small, even when the costs of oxygen production and CO2 liquefaction facilities etc. were taken into account.

Effect of Sealing Materials and Parameters on the Corrosion Resistance of HVOF-Sprayed CrC-NiCr Coatings (실링재 및 실링방법이 HVOF 용사된 CrC-NiCr 코팅의 내식성에 미치는 영향)

  • Effects of sealant and sealing procedure on corrosion resistance of high velocity oxy-fuel (HVOF) sprayed coatings were studied. HVOF-sprayed CrC-20NiCr coatings were sealed using three commercial sealants based on phenolics and epoxy. Penetration depth of sealants, measured by fluorescent microscope technique, was between $19{\mu}m$ and $340{\mu}m$ depending on sealant, sealing condition or sealing procedure. It was found that sealing on rotation status was more effective than that on stationary specimen due to the Coriolis effect of fluid in pores of the coating. From the CASS results, corrosion resistance of properly sealed CrC-20NiCr coatings was equal to that of hexa-valent chromium plating.

An Experimental and Numerical Study on the Oxy-MILD Combustion at Pilot Scale Heating Capacity (Pilot급 산소 MILD 연소에 관한 실험 및 수치해석적 연구)

  • MILD (Moderate and Intense Low-oxygen Dilution) combustion using oxygen as an oxidizer is considered as one of the most promising combustion technologies for high energy efficiency and for reducing nitrogen oxide and carbon dioxide emissions. In order to investigate the effects of nozzle angle and oxygen velocity conditions on the formation of oxygen-MILD combustion, numerical and experimental approaches were performed in this study. The numerical results showed that the recirculation ratio ($K_V$), which is an important parameter for performing MILD combustion, was increased in the main reaction zone when the nozzle angle was changed from 0 degrees to 15 degrees. Also, it was observed that a low and uniform temperature distribution was achieved at an oxygen velocity of 400 m/s. The perfectly invisible oxy-MILD flame was observed experimentally under the condition of a nozzle angle of $10^{\circ}$ and an oxygen velocity of 400 m/s. Moreover, the NOx emission limit was satisfied with NOx regulation of less than 80 ppm.

  • In the solid rocket motor (SRM), a thrust of rocket is generated by a nozzle so it is very important device. The nozzle of SRM is a condition of high temperature and high pressure so occurs the erosion by combustion gas. The liquid rocket propulsion systems (LRPSs) cools the nozzle by the fuel and oxidizer but SRM does not cool the nozzle. This paper deal with the development of the oxy-acetylene torch tester and investigate the thermochemical erosion properties for the thermal insulation materials of the graphite rocket nozzle throat through the experiment. The results of experiments are compared with the results of Theoretical model and identify the key factors affecting of erosion. The results is in good agreement with the experimental data.

  • The combustion characteristics of methane oxygen diffusion flames have been investigated to give basic information for designing industrial oxyfuel combustors. NOx reduction has become one of the most determining factors in the combustor design since the small amount of nitrogen is included from the current low cost oxygen production process. Flame lengths decreased with increasing fuel or oxygen velocity because of the enhancement of mixing effect. Correlation equation between flame length and turbulent kinetic energy was proposed. NOx concentration was reduced with increasing fuel or oxygen velocity because of the enhanced entrainment of the product gas into flame zone as well as the reduction of residence time in combustion zone.

$CaSO_4$ Decomposition and Desulfurization in In-Furnace Desulfurization for Oxy-Fuel Combustion Using DTF (DTF를 이용한 순산소연소 조건에서 탈황반응과 $CaSO_4$ 분해 특성)

  • In general, the decomposition of $CaSO_4$ formed by sulfation reaction in the in-furnace desulfurization process using limestone has strong effect on the desulfurization reaction under the oxy-fuel combustion condition. In this study, the conversion rates were measured and reaction rates were calculated in order to investigate the effects of the experimental variables such as temperature and the concentrations of $CO_2$, $O_2$, $SO_2$, on the $CaSO_4$ decomposition reaction using DTF (Drop Tube Furnace) in the desulfurization reaction. The conversion rate and the reaction rate of $CaSO_4$ decomposition reaction were increased with reaction temperature. $CO_2$ concentration has little effect on $CaSO_4$ decomposition reaction in the presence of $O_2$. Under the same experimental conditions, the decomposition rate of $CaSO_4$ was enhanced with the decreasing the $O_2$ concentration, but vice versa with the increasing of $SO_2$ concentration.

Study on Calcination Characteristics of Limestones for In-Furnace Desulfurization in Oxy-Fuel Combustion (순산소연소 조건에서 석회석의 소성특성 및 로내탈황에 관한 연구)

  • In oxy-fuel combustion, $CO_2$ concentration in the flue gas may be enriched up to 95% owing to the gas recirculation. Under the high $CO_2$ concentration, the calcination characteristic of limestone is different from that of the conventional air combustion system. In this study, three types of limestone taken from different regions in Korea were used as $SO_2$ absorbent and their calcination characteristics depending on calcination temperature were investigated. The experiments were performed to examine the effects of operating variables such as absorbent species, reaction temperatures on the $SO_2$ removal efficiency and reacted limestone particles were captured to examine the sulfur contents. The degree of calcination and the specific surface area increased with calcination temperature and $SO_2$ removal efficiency increased with reaction temperature. The results showed remarkable difference in $SO_2$ removal efficiencies between the limestone types. The sulfur content of the reacted limestone with the highest $SO_2$ removal efficiency was about 10%.

A Study on the Development of $CO_2$ Recycle Oxy-Fuel Combustion Heating System ($CO_2$ 재순환형 산소연소 가열시스템 개발에 관한 연구)

  • An Experimental study was conducted on $CO_{2}$ recycle combustion heating system using pure oxygen instead of conventional air as an oxidant, which is thereby producing a flue gas of mostly $CO_{2}$ and water vapor($H_{2}O$ and water vapor($H_{2}O$) and resulting in higher $CO_{2}$ concentration. The advantages of the system are not only the ability to control high temperatures characteristic of oxygen combustion with recycling $CO_{2}$ but also the possibility to reduce NOx emission in the flue gas. A small scale industrial reheating furnace simulator and specially designed variable flame burner were used to characterize the $CO_{2}$ recycle oxy-fuel combustion, such as the variations of furnace pressure, temperature and composition in the flue gas during recycle. It was found that $CO_{2}$ concentration in the flue gas was about 80% without $CO_{2}$recycle. The furnace temperature and pressure and pressure were decreased due to recycle and the NOx emission was also reduced to maintain under 100ppm.

Exergy Analysis of Cryogenic Air Separation Unit for Oxy-fuel Combustion (순산소 연소를 위한 초저온 공기분리장치의 엑서지 분석)

  • In order to solve the global warming and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, $CO_2$ capture technology was developed by applying oxy-fuel combustion. But there has been such a problem that its economic efficiency is low due to the high price of oxygen gases. ASU is known to be most suitable method to produce large quantity of oxygen, to reduce the oxygen production cost, the efficiency of ASU need to be improved. To improve the efficiency of ASU, exergy analysis can be used. The exergy analysis provides the information of used energy in the process, the location and size of exergy destruction. In this study, the exergy analysis was used for process developing and optimization of large scale ASU. The process simulation of ASU was conducted, the results were used to calculate the exergy. As a result, to reduce the exergy loss in the cold box of ASU, a lower operating pressure process was suggested. It was confirmed the importance of heat leak and heat loss reduction of cold box. Also, the unit process of ASU which requires thermal integration was confirmed.
