Metallic tin powder with diameter less than 50 nm was synthesized by inert gas condensation method and subsequently oxidized to tin oxide ($SnO_2$) along the two heat-treatment routes. The $SnO_2$ powder of single phase with a tetragonal structure was obtained by the heat-treatment route with intermediate annealing step-wise oxidation, whereas the $SnO_2$ powder with mixture of orthorhombic and tetragonal phases was obtained by the heat-treatment route without intermediate annealing (direct oxidation). $SnO_2$ gas sensors fabricated from the nano-phase $SnO_2$ powders were investigated by structural observations as well as measurement of electrical resistance. The $SnO_2$ gas sensors fabricated from the mixed-phase powder exhibited much lower sensitivity against $H_2$ gas than those fabricated from the powder of tetragonal phase. Reduced sensitivity of gas sensors with the new orthorhombic phase was attributed to detrimental effects of phase boundaries between orthorhombic and tetragonal phases and many twin boundaries on the charge mobility.

This paper investigated the effect of biodegradation behavior on the oxidation of cellulose nanofiber mats. The cellulose mats were produced through electro spinning. The diameter of an electrospun fiber varied from 90 to 240 nm depending on the electrospinning parameters, such as the solution concentration, needle diameter, and rotation speed of a grounded collector. Oxidized cellulose (OC).mats containing different carboxyl contents were prepared using $NO_2$ as an oxidant. The total carboxyl content of the cellulose nanofiber mats obtained after oxidation for 20 h was $20.6\%$. The corresponding carboxyl content was important from a commercial point of view because OC containing $16-24\%$ carboxyl content are used widely in the medical field as a form of powder or knitted fabric. Degradation tests of the OC mats were performed at $37^{\circ}C$ in phosphate-buffered saline (pH 7.4). Microscopy techniques were introduced to study the morphological properties and the degradation behavior of the OC mats. Morphological changes of the mats were visualized using optical microscopy. Within 4 days of exposure to PBS, the weight loss of the OC mats was $>90\%$.
Fe-Co nanocomposite powders with different composition were prepared by chemical vapor condensation (CVC) process and their characterizations were studied by means of X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and vibrating sample magnetometer. The particles having the mean size of 5~25 nm consisted of metallic cores and oxide shells. The Co contents and particle size increased with increasing the carrier gas flow rate of Co precursor. The saturation magnetization and coercivity increased with increasing Co content. and the saturation magnetization maximized at the 40 wt.%Co. The Fe-Co nanocomposite powder oxidized at $400^{\circ}C$ showed the maximum coercivity of 1739 Oe.
This study was designed to investigate the effect of silkworm powder on oxygen radicals and their scavenger enzymes in brain membrances of SD rats. Hydroxyl radical (OH) levels resulted in a considerable decreases in brain mitochondria fraction. Superoxide radical (O$_2$) levels were a slightly decreased in brain cytosol fraction. Lipid peroxide (LPO) and Oxidized protein (OP) levels were significantly decreased in brain mitochondria and microsomes fraction. Mn-superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity was remarkably increased in the mitochondria fraction. Cu and Zn-SOD activities were effectively increased in brain cytosol fraction. GSHPx activity was considerably increased in brain cytosol fraction. These results suggest that anti-aging effect of silkworm plays an effective role in attenuating an oxidative stress and increasing a scravenger enzyme activity in brain membranes.
The nature and composition of the surfaces of silicon nitride and β-Sialon powders were investigated using high voltage and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). β-Sialon powder was produced from Hadong kaolin by the carbothermic reduction and simultaneous nitridation. XPS showed that Al was contained in the surface of β-Sialon powder besides Si, N and O components, which is different from that of silicon nitride. It was supposed that Al in the surface of β-Sialon was bonded with oxygen from the oxygen-nitrogen ratio and the measurement of Al 2p binding energies. After both silicon nitride and β-Sialon powders were oxidized at 800℃ for 24h in air, nitrogen didn't exist in the surfaces and the depth of the oxide layer increased. The measurement of Si 2p binding energies showed that the chemical shifts occurred from Si3N2O and/or Si2N2O to SiO2 phase.
Spark-Plasma Sintering(SPS) is one of the new sintering methods which takes advantages both inconventional pressure sintering and electric current sintering. It is known that SPS is very effective for the densification of hard-to-sinter materials like refractory metals, intermetallic compounds, glass and ceramics without grain growth. However, a clear explanation for sintering mechanism and an experimental evidence for the formation of weak plasma during SPS are not given yet. In this study, fundamental study on sintering behavior and mechanism of SPS was investiged. For this study, various spherical Fe powders were prepared such as as-received, as-reduced, and as-oxidized and then sintered by SPS facility. In order to confirm the surface cleaning effect during SPS neck region and fracture surface of sintered body was observed and analyzed by SEM/EPMA. Densification behavior was analyzed from the data of deflection along the pressure axis. Some specimens were additionally produced by Hot Pressing and the results were compared with those of SPS.
This study was designed to investigate the effects of silkworm (Bombyx mori L.) powder (SWP) on oxygen radicals and their scavenger enzymes in liver membranes of rats. Sprague-Dawley(SD) male rats(160$\pm$10g) were fed basic diet (control group), and experimental diets(SWP-200 and SWP-400 groups) added 200 and 400 mg/kg BW/day for 6 weeks. Hydroxyl radical (.OH) levels resulted in a consistent decreases (4.0% and 7.2%, 5.0% and 14.1%, respectively) in liver mitochondria and microsomes of SWP-200 SWP-400 groups compared with control group, and O2 radical level was significantly decreased about 12% in liver cytosol of SWP-400 group compared with control group. Lipid peroxide(LPO) levels were significantly decreased (14.4% and 9.1%, respectively) in liver mitochondria and microsomes of SWP-400 group only compared with control group. Oxidized protein (OP) levels were remarkably decreased about 12.7% and 16.3% in liver microsomes only of SWP-200 and SWP-400 groups, but significant difference between liver mitochondria could not obtained. Mn-SOD activities were remarkably increased (15.8% and 25.2%, respectively) in mitochondria of SWP-200 and SWP-400 groups, but significant difference between Cu, Zn-SOD activities in these group could be not obtained. GSHPx activity was significantly increased in liver cytosol of SWP-400 group compared with control group. These results suggest that silkworm powder may play an effective role in a attenuating a oxidative stress and increasing a scavenger enzyme activity in liver membranes.
Barium ferrite powders were synthesized by the coprecipitation method using iron-pickling waste acid (IPWA) and BaCl$_2$$.$2H$_2$O as raw materials. Fe$\^$2+/ ions in the IPWA, which contains both Fe$\^$2+/ and Fe$\^$3+/ ions, were oxidized into Fe$\^$3+/ ions using H$_2$O$_2$. Proper amount of BaCl$_2$$.$2H$_2$O was dissolved into the oxidized IPWA. Using NaOH, Ba$\^$2+/ and Fe$\^$3+/ ions were coprecipitated as Ba(OH)$_2$and Fe(OH)$_3$. The coprecipitated Ba(OH)$_2$and Fe(OH)$_3$were washed and dried. Barium ferrite powders were obtained by calcining the dried Ba(OH)$_2$and Fe(OH)$_3$mixture from 400$\^{C}$ to 1000$\^{C}$ with a 100$\^{C}$ interval. Barium ferrite powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction, SEM, and VSM. It was found that barium ferrite powders could be synthesized at around 630$\^{C}$. The synthesized barium ferrite powders showed hexagonal plate shapes with a fairly uniform size. The barium ferrite powder calcined at 900$\^{C}$ showed good magnetic properties, saturation magnetization of 67emu/g and maximum coercivity of 5000 Oe.
Fe-Si based powders prepare by melting the metals in the composition of FeSi2,.Fe0.95Mn0.05Si2 and Fe0.95Co0.05Si0.2 were used as the starting materials together with a commercial FeSi2 powder to study the effect of oxidation on their thermoelectric properties. The powders were heated at 650~80$0^{\circ}C$ in dired air before forming and sintering at 1190 and 120$0^{\circ}C$ in Ar+7%H2. The microstructure and phases of the annealed specimens were observed using the optical microscopty SEM, EDS and XRD. The thermoelectric properties of the specimens were also measured. The temperature at which Seebe다 coefficient showed the maximum value increased with the degree of oxidation. Electrical conductivity showed a tendency to decrease in the oxidized samples regardless of their compositions. Seebeck coefficient of the specimen showed almost the same value even after oxidation which may be explained by the formation of the discontinuous second phases from impurities in the oxidized specimens.
