Semiconducting metal oxides have been frequently used as gas sensing materials. While zinc oxide is a popular material for such applications, structures such as nanowires, nanorods and nanotubes, due to their large surface area, are natural candidates for use as gas sensors of higher sensitivity. The compound ZnO has been studied, due to its chemical and thermal stability, for use as an n-type semiconducting gas sensor. ZnO has a large exciton binding energy and a large bandgap energy at room temperature. Also, ZnO is sensitive to toxic and combustible gases. The NO gas properties of zinc oxide-single wall carbon nanotube (ZnO-SWCNT) composites were investigated. Fabrication includes the deposition of porous SWCNTs on thermally oxidized $SiO_2$ substrates followed by sputter deposition of Zn and thermal oxidation at $400^{\circ}C$ in oxygen. The Zn films were controlled to 50 nm thicknesses. The effects of microstructure and gas sensing properties were studied for process optimization through comparison of ZnO-SWCNT composites with ZnO film. The basic sensor response behavior to 10 ppm NO gas were checked at different operation temperatures in the range of $150-300^{\circ}C$. The highest sensor responses were observed at $300^{\circ}C$ in ZnO film and $250^{\circ}C$ in ZnO-SWCNT composites. The ZnO-SWCNT composite sensor showed a sensor response (~1300%) five times higher than that of pure ZnO thin film sensors at an operation temperature of $250^{\circ}C$.
Gas sensitizations of tin oxide film were investigated by measuring the change of film resistance in various gas atmospheres such as $N_2,\; O_2,\; H_2O$. The main test sample, polycrystalline $SnO_2$ film containing small Sb as a dopant was prepared by a sputtering technique and showed a long term stability in base resistance and thus, in gas sensitivity. The adsorption of oxygen on the film surface as a type of $(O_{ads})$ at the temperature of around $300^{\circ}C$ played important roles in sensor operating mechanism. The roles were ⅰ) the increase of base resistance in ambient air, which consequently lead to high sensitivity and ⅱ) the promotion of fast recovery. The reaction of hydrogen gas with the already adsorbed $(O_{ads})$ ions was considered as a decisive sensitization mechanism of tin oxide film. However, the dissociation of hydrogen molecules on film surface, by direct donation of electron to film also took a major part in the sensitization. The effect of humidity on gas sensitization was found to be negligible at the sensor operating temperature of around $300^{\circ}C$.

A small-sized gas identification system has been fabricated and characterized using an integrated gas sensor array and artificial neural-network. The sensor array consists of four thick-film oxide semiconductor gas sensors whose sensing layers are $In_{2}O_{3}-Sb_{2}O_{5}-Pd-doped\;SnO_2$ + Pd-coated layer, $La_{2}O_{5}-PdCl_{2}-doped\;SnO_2,\;WO_{3}-doped\;SnO_{2}$ + Pt-coated layer and $ThO_{2}-V_{2}O_{5}-PdCl_{2}\;doped\;SnO_{2}$. The small-sized gas identification instrument is composed of a GMS 81504 containing an internal ROM (4k bytes), a RAM (128 bytes) and four-channel AD converter as MPU, LEDs for displaying alarm conditions for three gases (liquefied petroleum gas: LPG, liquefied natural gas: LNG and carbon monoxide: CO) and interface circuits for them. The instrument has been used to identify alarm conditions for three gases among the real circumstances and the identification has been successfully demonstrated.

Indium tin oxide (ITO) films with a 5 nm thick Au interlayer were prepared on glass substrates. The effects of the Au interlayer on the gas sensitivity for detecting methanol vapors were investigated at room temperature. The conductivity of the film sensor increased upon exposure to methanol vapor and the sensitivity also increased proportionally with the methanol vapor concentration. In terms of the sensitivity measurements, the ITO film sensor with an Au interlayer shows a higher sensitivity than that of the conventional ITO film sensor. This approach is promising in gaining improvement in the performance of ITO gas sensors used for the detection of methanol vapor at room temperature.
Gas sensor properties of $WO_3$ nanowire structures have been studied. The sensing layer was prepared by deposition of tungsten metal on porous single wall carbon nanotubes followed by thermal oxidation. The morphology and crystalline quality of $WO_3$ material was investigated by SEM, TEM, XRD and Raman analysis. A highly porous $WO_3$ nanowire structure with a mean diameter of 82 nm was obtained. Response to CO, $NH_3$ and $H_2$ gases diluted in air were investigated in the temperature range of $100{\sim}340^{\circ}C$ The sensor exhibited low response to CO gas and quite high response to $NH_3$ and $H_2$ gases. The highest sensitivity was observed at $250^{\circ}C$ for $NH_3$ and $300^{\circ}C$ for $H_2$. The effect of the diameters of $WO_3$ nanowires on the sensor performance was also studied. The $WO_3$ nanowires sensor with diameter of 40 nm showed quite high sensitivity, fast response and recovery times to $H_2$ diluted in dry air. The sensitivity as a function of detecting gas concentrations and gas sensing mechanism was discussed. The effect of dilution carrier gases, dry air and nitrogen, was examined.
A fuzzy ARTMAP neural network and a fuzzy ART neural network are proposed to identify $H_2S$, $NH_3$ and their mixtures and to estimate their concentrations, respectively. Features are extracted from a micro gas sensor array operated in a thermal modulation plan. After dimensions of the features are reduced by a preprocessing scheme, the features are fed into the proposed fuzzy neural networks. By computer simulations, the proposed methods are shown to be fast in learning and accurate in concentration estimating. The results are compared with other methods and discussed.
Gas chromatography (GC) separation technology and metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) gas sensors have been integrated for the effective analysis of volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) such as H2S, CH3SH, (CH3)2S, and (CH3)2S2. The separation and detection characteristics of the GC/MOS system using diluted standard gases were investigated for the qualitative and quantitative analysis of VSCs. The typical concentrations of the standard gases were 0.1, 0.5, 1.0, 5.0, and 10.0 ppm. The GC/MOS system successfully separated H2S, CH3SH, (CH3)2S, and (CH3)2S2 using a celite-filled column. The reproducibility of the retention time measurements was at a 3% relative standard deviation level, and the correlation coefficient (R2) for the VSC concentration was greater than 0.99. In addition, the chromatograms of single and mixed gases were almost identical.
We report the application of conducting metal oxide electrodes for semiconducting metal oxide gas sensors. Pt interdigitated electrodes have been commonly used for metal oxide gas sensor because of the low resistivity, excellent thermal and chemical stability of Pt. However, the high cost of Pt is an obstacle for the wide use of metal oxide gas sensors compared with its counterpart electrochemical gas sensors. Meanwhile, relatively low-cost conducting metal oxides are widely being used for light-emitting diodes, flat panel displays, solar cell and etc. In this work, we have fabricated $WO_3$ and $SnO_2$ thin film gas sensors using interdigitated electrodes of conducting metal oxides. Thin film gas sensors based on conducting metal oxides exhibited superior gas sensing properties than those using Pt interdigitated electrodes. The result was attributed to the low contact resistance between the conducting metal oxide and the sensing material. Consequently, we demonstrated the feasibility of conducting metal oxide interdigitated electrodes for novel gas sensors.
Gas sensors based on semiconducting metal oxides have attracted considerable attention for various applications owing to their facile, cheap, and small-scale manufacturing processes. Hematite (α-Fe2O3) is widely considered as a promising candidate for a gas-sensing material owing to not only its abundance in the earth's crust and low price but also its chemical stability and suitable bandgap energy. However, only a few studies have been performed in this direction because of the low gas response and sluggish response of hematite-based gas sensors. Nanostructures present a representative solution to both overcome these disadvantages and exploit the desirable features to produce high-performance gas sensors. However, several challenges remain for adopting gas sensors based on metal oxide nanostructures, such as improving cost efficiency and facilitating mass production. This review summarizes the recent studies on gas sensors based on hematite nanostructures. It also provides useful insights into various strategies for enhancing the gas-sensing properties of gas sensors based on hematite nanostructures.
