  • Poly(N,N'-Dichloro-N-ethyl-benzene-1,3-disulfonamide) (PCBS) and N,N,N',N'-Tetrachlorobenzene-1,3-disulfonamide (TCBDA) were found to be a mild and efficient reagent for the direct oxidative conversion of sulfur compounds to the corresponding arenesulfonyl chlorides in good to excellent yields through the oxidative chlorination. The overall process is simple, practical, and it provides convenient access to a variety of aryl or heteroarylsulfonyl chlorides. The mild reaction conditions and the broad substrate scope render this method attractive, and complementary to existing syntheses of aryl or heteroarylsulfonyl chlorides.

  • Catalytic reactors have been essential for chemical engineering process, and different designs of reactors in multi-scales have been previously studied. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) utilized in reactor designs have been gaining interest due to its cost-effective advantage in designing the actual reactors before its construction. In this work, butadiene synthesis via oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) of n-butene using tubular reactor was used as a case study in the CFD model. The effects of coolant and reactor diameter were investigated in assessing the reactor performance. Based on the results of the CFD model, the conversion and selectivity were 86.5% and 59.5% respectively in a fixed bed reactor under adiabatic condition. When coolants were used in a tubular reactor, reactor temperature profiles showed that solar salt had lower temperature gradients inside the reactor than the cooling water. Furthermore, higher conversion (90.9%) and selectivity (90.5%) were observed for solar salt as compared to the cooling water (88.4% for conversion and 86.3% for selectivity). Meanwhile, reducing the reactor diameter resulted in smaller temperature gradients with higher conversion and selectivity.

  • The effect of the reaction temperature and reaction time on the thermal oxidative purification quality of detonation nanodiamond (NDsoot) was investigated in a gas-solid fluidized bed reactor of a $0.10m-ID{\times}1.0m$-high stainless steel column with zirconia beads ($d_{SV}=99.2{\mu}m$). The carbon conversion increased with increasing the reaction temperature; however, when the reaction temperature was greater than 773 K, the carbon conversion did not increase. The content of $sp^3$-hybridized carbon at the reaction temperature of 703 K barely changed when the reaction time was more than 30 minutes, but at 773 K, the content decreased as preferred. At 703 K, the purification quality increased with the increasing reaction time; however, at 773 K, the purification quality increased up to 30 minutes and then decreased rapidly.

  • A total of 16 crossbred post-weaning pigs (10.64${\pm}$0.27 kg BW) were individually penned and assigned to one of two treatments to investigate the influences of diquat-induced oxidative stress on performance and arginine metabolism. Pigs in the oxidative stress group were injected intra-peritoneally with 10 mg/kg BW of diquat, while the control group were injected with isotonic saline. All pigs were fed ad libitum. The experiment lasted for 7 days. The results indicated that compared with control treatment, oxidative stress induced by diquat significantly decreased average daily gain, intake and feed conversion. The treatment decreased activities of antioxidant enzymes, increased concentration of malondialdehyde in plasma, increased cationic amino acid transporter-1 mRNA level and activity of ornithine aminotransferase and concentrations of arginine and citrulline in the jejunum, decreased the concentrations of arginine in plasma and kidney, and decreased induced nitric oxide synthase mRNA level. It is concluded that oxidative stress induced by diquat can influence absorption and metabolism of arginine and consequently modify the requirement of arginine for post-weaning pigs.

  • Schwann cells play a critical role for myelination in peripheral nerve system. It also plays an important role in nerve protection and regeneration. In peripheral nerve damage, regeneration is induced by the migration and proliferation of Schwann cells which were promoted by suppressing the oxidative stress. In this study, Human placental extract was prepared by homogenization and estimated its efficacy in RSC96 cells. Placental extract exhibited a protective effect against hydrogen peroxide-induced oxidative stress in RSC96 cells, confirmed by MTT assay. Furthermore, placental extract decreased intracellular ROS against oxidative stress, confirmed by DCFH-DA assay. Autophagy was visualized with Cyto-ID staining to confirm the autophagy activity of placental extracts. The activity of autophagy was confirmed by immunoblot analysis of autophagy flux-associated proteins such as LC3 conversion and SQSTM1 degradation. Thus, we confirmed the antioxidant effect of placental extract to protect RSC96 cells from oxidative stress, and observed that it activated autophagy and restored autophagy flux.

  • In this study, ceria- based catalysts were prepared for dimethyl carbonate (DMC) synthesis and reaction conditions were evaluated for finding the optimal reaction route. In order to find optimal catalysts for DMC synthesis, calcination temperature and Cu(II) impregnation amount were evaluated. The oxidative carbonylation using methanol, carbon monoxide and oxygen and the direct synthesis using methanol and carbon dioxide were introduced for producing DMC. Following the law of Le Chatelier, the dehydration reaction was applied for enhancing the reactivity (methanol conversion) as removing water during the reaction. 2-cyanopyridine, as a chemical dehydration agent, was used. In the case of the oxidative carbonylation, methanol conversion rate increased from 15.1% to 38.7% and the DMC selectivity increased from 0% to 98.8%. In the case of the direct synthesis, methanol conversion rate increased from 1.0% to 77.8% and the DMC selectivity increased from 41.2% to 100.0%.

  • Oxidative coupling of methane(OCM), one of the methods of direct methane conversion, was performed. Metal oxide catalysts used were Li/MgO and Pb/MgO. To investigate the reactivity of the catalysts with temperature, the reaction was carried out at 600, 700 and $800^{\circ}C$; and to investigate the effect of the feed ratio of the reactants($CH_4:O_2$) on reactivity, conversion, and selectivity the reaction was performed at $700^{\circ}C$ with the feed ratio of 2:1 and 1:1. The results indicate that 7wt% Li/MgO catalyst is a good catalyst for OCM reaction with 20% conversion and 65% selectivity at $700^{\circ}C$ with the feed ratio of 2:1. As feed ratio was 1:1, methane conversion was increased to 30% while $C_2$ selectivity decreased to 45% at $700^{\circ}C$ with 7wt% Li/MgO catalyst. The Pb/MgO catalyst showed less selectivity(25%) than Li/MgO did.

  • Saururus chinensis has been reported to contain compounds such as lignans, alkaloids, diterpenes, flavonoids, tannins, steroids, and lipids. Fermentation is commonly used to break down certain undesirable compounds, to induce effective microbial conversion, and to improve the potential nutraceutical values. Previous studies have reported that the fermentation process could modify naturally occurring constituents, including isoflavons, saponins, phytosterols, and phenols, and could enhance biological activities, specifically antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. The probiotic strains used for fermentation exert beneficial effects and are safe. In this study, the antioxidative effects of the Bacillus subtilis fermentation of Saururus chinensis were investigated in a rat model with Triton WR-1339-induced hyperlipidemia by comparing the measured antioxidative biological parameters of fermented Saururus chinensis extract to those of nonfermented Saururus chinensis extract. Fermentation played a more excellent role than nonfermentation in ultimately protecting the body from oxidative stress in the liver of the experimental rats with Triton WR-1339-induced hyperlipidemia.
