Material degradation such as high temperature oxidation of metallic material is a severe problem in energy generation systems or manufacturing industries. The metallic materials are oxidized to form oxide films in high temperature environments. The oxide films act as diffusion barriers of oxygen and metal ions and thereafter decrease oxidation rates of metals. The metal oxidation is, however, accelerated by mechanical fracture and spalling of the oxide films caused by thermal stresses by repetition of temperature change, vibration and by the impact of solid particles. It is therefore very important to investigate mechanical properties and adhesion of oxide films in high temperature environments, as well as the properties in a room temperature environment. The oxidation tests were conducted for Ni and Ni-Co alloy under high temperature corrosive environments. The hardness distributions against the indentation depth from the top surface were examined at room temperature. Dynamic indentation tests were performed on Ni oxide films formed on Ni surfaces at room and high temperature to observe fractures or cracks generated around impact craters. As a result, it was found that the mechanical property as hardness of the oxide films were different between Ni and Ni-Co alloy, and between room and high temperatures, and that the adhesion of Ni oxide films was relatively stronger than that of Co oxide films.
In this study, the factors affecting commercialization of $Pt/TiO_2$ catalyst, which can oxidize HCHO at room temperature, was investigated. In order to determine the optimum noble metal loading, the catalytic activity was evaluated by varying the Pt loadings; the best catalytic activity was achieved for 1 wt% of Pt. In addition, the catalyst prepared under the reduction condition showed an excellent HCHO oxidation conversion at room temperature. Based on these results, it was confirmed that the activity could be changed by oxidation state of active metal, and in case of Pt, metallic Pt ($Pt^0$) species was more active on HCHO oxidation at room temperature. As a result of evaluating an effect of space velocity to determine the optimum operating condition, it was found that in the lower space velocity, conversion rate of HCHO was increased due to increase of catalyst bed. Catalytic activity was greater in the presence of moisture than in its absence. Through above results, the key factors for commercialization of oxidation catalyst, which was operated at room temperature even without any additional energy source was confirmed.
The wear and oxidation resistance of two phase nickel aluminides was investigated. Wear tests of various heat-treated specimens at room temperature and at $500^{\circ}C$ were performed under no lubricant condition in air by using a ball-on-disk type tribotester. Isothermal oxidation tests were made at $1100^{\circ}C$ in air flowing at the rate of 70cc/min and at $1000^{\circ}C$ in air by using TGA. Experimental results from wear tests showed that nickel aluminide with a higher content of Al had an improved wear resistance at both temperatures. Also the examination of the wear tracks after wear test at both room temperature and $500^{\circ}C$ indicated that regardless of the alloy compositions the wear tracks of the two phase nickel aluminides showed an abrasive type wear The improved oxidation resistance observed in the Ni-34at%Al alloy could to be attributed to the microstructural difference between the aluminides. An accelerated oxidation along the thin layer of $Ni_3AL$ along the grain boundary observed in the microstructure of the Ni-32at%Al aluminide could be attributed to the poor oxidation resistance.

Simultaneous CO and $C_3H_6$ oxidation was carried out over noble metal supported monolith catalysts in a flow thorugh type reactor at the temperature ranging from room temperature to $500^\circ$C. Pt and Pd were selected as major active species, 10wt% of Ce was impregnated as an additive and alumina and silica were used as supports. The reactant gases were simulated and the reaction products were analyzed by on-line G.C.. EDX, SEM, TGA, XRD and optical microscope were used to analyze the characteristics of the prepared catalysts. Under the given conditions in this study, the catalysts supported on alumina showed better activity for CO oxidation, while Pd catalysts showed better activity for $C_3H_6$ oxidation. The improvement of conversion due to increase in thermal stability possibily by Ce addition was observed only for Pt catalysts.
Nanocrystalline (NC) Ni electrodeposits (EDs) with a mean grain size of $34{\pm}12nm$ has been investigated, from room temperature to $800^{\circ}C$ under a purge gas of argon, by both non-isothermal and isothermal differential scanning calorimetry measurements, in combination with characterization of temperature-dependent microstructural evolution. A significant exothermic peak resulting from superimposition of recrystallization and surface oxidation occurs between 340 and $745^{\circ}C$ at a heating rate of $10^{\circ}C/min$ for the NC Ni EDs. The temperatures for recrystallization and oxidation increase with increasing the heating rate. In addition, recrystallization leads to a profound brittle-ductile transition of the Ni EDs in a narrow range around the peak temperature for the recrystallization.

Cr(III) and Co(III) complexes with acetylacetonate were anchored onto a mesoporous MCM-41 through Schiff condensation. The materials were characterized by XRD, FT-IR, BET, CHN and ICP techniques. Elemental analysis of samples revealed that one C=N bond was formed through Schiff condensation on MCM-41 surface. The catalysts were tested for the alcohol oxidations using t-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP) and $H_2O_2$ as oxidant. The catalytic experiments were carried out at both room temperature and reflux condition. Various solvents such as dichloromethane, acetonitrile and water were examined in the oxidation of alcohols. Among the different solvents, catalytic activity is found more in acetonitrile. Further, the catalysts were recycled three times in the oxidation of alcohols and no major change in the conversion and selectivity is observed, which shows that the immobilized metal-acetylacetonate complexes are stable under the present reaction conditions.
Stable crystalline 1-Benzyl-4-aza-1-azonia-bicyclo[2.2.2]octane tribromide (BABOT), can be readily synthesized from the reaction of the corresponding bromide with $HNO_3$ and aqueous KBr. Selective Oxidation of a variety of dialkyl and alkyl Aryl sulfides to the corresponding sulfoxides in high yield was achieved by this reagent in solution ($CH_3CN/H_2O$) and solvent free conditions. The reaction proceeds under neutral and mild conditions and can be carried out easily at room temperature with regeneration of BABOT. In this method purification of products is straightforward and no over oxidation to sulfone was noted.

The alumina substrates that Ni electrode was printed on and the multi-layered PTCR thermistors of which composition is $(Ba_{0.998}Ce_{0.002})TiO_3+0.001MnCO_3+0.05BN$ were fabricated by a thick film process, and the effect of re-oxidation temperature on their resistivities and resistance jumps were investigated, respectively. Ni electroded alumina substrate and the multi-layered PTC thermistor were sintered at $1150^{\circ}C$ for 2 h under $PO_2=10^{-6}$ Pa and then re-oxidized at $600{\sim}850^{\circ}C$ for 20 min. With increasing the re-oxidation temperature, the room temperature resistivity increased and the resistance jump ($LogR_{290}/R_{25}$) decreased, which seems to be related to the oxidation of Ni electrode. The small sized chip PTC thermistor such as 2012 and 3216 exhibits a nonlinear and rectifying behavior in I-V curve but the large sized chip PTC thermistor such as 4532 and 6532 shows a linear and ohmic behavior. Also, the small sized chip PTC thermistor such as 2012 and 3216 is more dependent on the re-oxidation temperature and easy to be oxidized in comparison with the large sized chip PTC thermistor such as 4532 and 6532. So, the re-oxidation conditions of chip PTC thermistor may be determined by considering the chip size.
Oxidation of glutamic acid is performed in aqueous acid media at $30^{\circ}C$ under the kinetic condition [glutamic acid]$_T{\gg}[Cr(VI)]_T$. Effect of combination of micellar catalyst (SDS, TX-100) and promoter (PA, bpy, phen) has been studied. Among the promoters phen accelerates the reaction most in aqueous media. But the rate acceleration is small in the case. Combination of promoter and catalyst produces much better result. Maximum rate enhancement occurs in presence of the combination of bpy and SDS.
In the present investigation, kinetic studies of oxidation of formic acid with and without catalyst and promoter in aqueous acid media were studied under the pseudo-first order conditions [formic acid]T ${\gg}[Cr(VI)]_T$ at room temperature. In the 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) promoted path, the cationic Cr(VI) phen complex is the main active oxidant species undergoes a nucleophilic attack by the substrate to form a ternary complex which subsequently experiences a redox decomposition through several steps leading to the products $CO_2$ and $H_2$ along with the Cr(III) phen complex. The anionic surfactant (i.e., sodium dodecyl sulfate, SDS) and neutral surfactant (i.e., Triton X-100, TX-100) act as catalyst and the reaction undergo simultaneously in both aqueous and micellar phase with an enhanced rate of oxidation in the micellar phase. Whereas the cationic surfactant (i.e., N-cetyl pyridinium chloride, CPC) acts as an inhibitor restricts the reaction to aqueous phase. The observed net enhancement of rate effects has been explained by considering the hydrophobic and electrostatic interaction between the surfactants and reactants. The neutral surfactant TX-100 has been observed as the suitable micellar catalyst for the phen promoted chromic acid oxidation of formic acid.
