Thin (25-103$\AA$) SiO$_2$ films are grown using the rapid thermal oxidation processing at temperatures of 105$0^{\circ}C$-115$0^{\circ}C$ for 5-30 sec, in order to investigate the characteristics of ultra thin oxide. For measuring the thickness of oxide TEM, ellipsometry, and C-V method which is taken in the condition of small surface band bending are used and compared. When neglecting the small deviation affected by both interface state and moisture charge effect, those three methods described above give similar results. In order to examine the effect of rapid thermal annealing, part of samples are annealed in N$_2$ ambient. MOS capacitors are fabricated and the characteristics of I-V and C-V are measured. Measurements show that the activation energy of initial thickness of oxide grown during the ramp-up time is of 1.125eV and the activation energy of the oxidation rate is of 0.98eV. As oxidation temperature is increased, dielectric breakdown field E$_{BD}$ is decreased due to the increase of fixed charge density N$_f$ However, E$_{BD}$ is shown to be decreased as increasing the thickness of oxide. The increase of N$_f$ in the early stage of thermal annealing results in the decrease of E$_{BD}$.
The field of redox proteomics focuses to a large extent on analyzing cysteine oxidation in proteins under different experimental conditions and states of diseases. The identification and localization of oxidized cysteines within the cellular milieu is critical for understanding the redox regulation of proteins under physiological and pathophysiological conditions, and it will in turn provide important information that are potentially useful for the development of novel strategies in the treatment and prevention of diseases associated with oxidative stress. Antioxidant enzymes that catalyze oxidation/reduction processes are able to serve as redox biomarkers in various human diseases, and they are key regulators controlling the redox state of functional proteins. Redox regulators with antioxidant properties related to active mediators, cellular organelles, and the surrounding environments are all connected within a network and are involved in diseases related to redox imbalance including cancer, ischemia/reperfusion injury, neurodegenerative diseases, as well as normal aging. In this review, we will briefly look at the selected aspects of oxidative thiol modification in antioxidant enzymes and thiol oxidation in proteins affected by redox control of antioxidant enzymes and their relation to disease. For both oxygen reduction (ORR) and hydrogen oxidation reactions (HOR) of proton electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), alloying Pt with another transition metal usually results in a higher activity relative to pure Pt, mainly due to electronic modification of Pt and bifunctional behaviour of alloy surface for ORR and HOR, respectively. However, activity and stability are closely related to the preparation of alloy nanoparticles. Preparation conditions of alloy nanoparticles have strong influence on surface composition, oxidation state, nanoparticle size, shape, and contamination, which result from a large difference in redox priority of metal precursors, intrinsic properties of metals, increasedreactivity of nanocrystallites, and interactions with constituents for the synthesis such as solvent, stabilizer, and reducing agent, etc. Carbon-supported Pt-Ni alloy nanoparticles were prepared by the borohydride reduction method in anhydrous solvent. Pt-Ru alloy nanoparticles supported on carbon black were also prepared by the similar synthetic method to that of Pt-Ni. Since electrocatalytic reactions are strongly dependent on the surface structure of metal catalysts, the atom-leveled design of the surface structure plays a significant role in a high catalytic activity and the utilization of electrocatalysts. Therefore, surface-modified electrocatalysts have attracted much attention due to their unique structure and new electronic and electrocatalytic properties. The carbon-supported Au and Pd nanoparticles were adapted as the substrate and the successive reduction process was used for depositing Pt and PtM (M=Ru, Pd, and Rh) bimetallic elements on the surface of Au and Pd nanoparticles. Distinct features of the overlayers for electrocatalytic activities including methanol oxidation, formic acid oxidation, and oxygen reduction were investigated.

Colloidal synthesis of nanoparticles with well-controlled size, shape, and composition, together with development of in situ surface science characterization tools, such as ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (APXPS), has brought new opportunities to unravel the surface structure of working catalysts. Recent studies suggest that surface oxides on transition metal nanoparticles play an important role in determining the catalytic activity of CO oxidation. In this talk, I will outline the recent studies on the influence of surface oxides on Rh, Pt, Ru and Co nanoparticles on the catalytic activity of CO oxidation [1-3]. Transition metal nanoparticle model catalysts were synthesized in the presence of poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) polymer capping agent and deposited onto a flat Si support as two-dimensional arrays using the Langmuir-Blodgett deposition technique. APXPS studies exhibited the reversible formation of surface oxides during oxidizing, reducing, and CO oxidation reaction [4]. General trend is that the smaller nanoparticles exhibit the thicker surface oxides, while the bigger ones have the thin oxide layers. Combined with the nature of surface oxides, this trend leads to the different size dependences of catalytic activity. Such in situ observations of metal nanoparticles are useful in identifying the active state of the catalysts during use and, hence, may allow for rational catalyst designs for practical applications. I will also show that the surface oxide can be engineered by using the simple surface treatment such as UV-ozone techniques, which results in changing the catalytic activity [5]. The results suggest an intriguing way to tune catalytic activity via engineering of the nanoscale surface oxide.

Characteristics of electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) plasma thermal oxide grown at low-temperature have been investigated. The effects of several process parameters such as substrate temperature, microwave power, gas flow rate, and process pressure on the growth rate of the oxide have been also investigated. It was found that the plasma density, reactive ion species, is strongly related to the growth rate of ECR plasma oxied. It was also found that the plasma density increases with microwave power while it decreases with decreasing O2 flow rate. The oxidation time dependence of the oxide thichness showed parabolic characteristics. Considering ECR plasma thermal oxidation at low-temperature, the linear as well as parabolic rate constants calculated from fitting data by using the Deal-Grove model was very large in comparison with conventional thermal oxidation. The ECR plasma oxide grown on (100) crystalline-Si wafer exhibited good electrical characteristics which are comparable to those of thermal oxide: fixed oxide charge(N$_{ff}$)= 7${\times}10^{10}cm^{-2}$, interface state density(N$_{it}$)=4${\times}10^[10}cm^{-2}eV^{-1}$, and breakdown field > 8MV/cm.

Very initial stage of oxidation process of Si (001) surface at room temperature (300 K) and high temperature (1200 K) was investigated using large scale molecular dynamics simulation. Reactive force field potential [1] was used for the simulation owing to its ability to handle charge variation as well as breaking and forming of bonds associated with the oxidation reaction. The results show that oxygen molecules adsorb dissociatively or otherwise leave the silicon surface. Initial position and orientation of oxygen molecule above the surface play important role in determining final state and time needed to dissociate. At 300 K, continuous transformation of ion $Si^+$ (or suboxide Si2O) to $Si2^+$ (SiO), $Si3^+$ (Si2O3) and finally to $Si4^+$ (SiO2) clearly observed. High temperature silicon surface provide heat energy that enable oxygen atom to penetrate into deeper silicon surface. The heat energy also retards adsorption process. As a result, transformation of ion $Si^+$ is impeded at 1200 K.
Ti-HMS samples in which titanium species exist in various forms of isolated tetrahedral state, finely dispersed $TiO_2$ cluster, and some in extra-framework anatase phase were prepared via a direct synthesis route using dodecylamine (DDS) as a structure directing agent by systematically varying the titanium loadings between 2 and 50 mol% Ti/(Ti+Si) in substrate composition. Physicochemical properties of the materials were evaluated using XRD, SEM/TEM, N2 adsorption, UV-vis and XANES spectroscopies. Catalytic properties of Ti-HMS in cyclohexene and 2,6-di-tert-butyl phenol (2,6-DTBP) oxidation using aqueous $H_2O_2$, and vapor phase photocatalytic degradation of acetaldehyde were evaluated. High $H_2O_2$ selectivity was obtained in cyclohexene oxidation, and cyclohexene conversion was found primarily dependent on the amount of tetrahedrally coordinated Ti sites. For bulky 2,6-DTBP oxidation and photocatalytic oxidation of acetaldehyde, on the other hand, conversions were found dependent on the total amount of Ti sites and maintaining an uniform mesoporous structure in the catalysts was not critical for efficient catalysis.
The oxidation mechanism of boratabenzene was studied. As a model compound the ferrocene analogue (${\eta}^6$-1-Methylboratabenzene)(${\eta}^5$-Pentamethylcyclopentadiennyl)iron 3 was chosen. The complex underwent irreversible oxidation in the presence of ortho proton on the ring and a methyl group on the boron atom in methanol medium. Chemical oxidations with $Hg(OAc)_2$, $HgSO_4$, $Cu(OH)_2$, $AgCF_3SO_3$ or $FeCl_3$ in MeOH gave, via a transition state [3], at first the derivates 6 and 7, which were converted to each 8 and 9.

The annals of Joseon Dynasty is the most valuable resource containing the record of Korean history and has been known as one of the UNESCO's Memory of the World Register. In some period, wax-treated paper was used in the annals of Joseon Dynasty to prevent the damage from pests. But, wax-treated volumes were discolored to brown, white or black, and partially cracked by the stiffened wax. It means that wax-treated volumes were damaged by the hardening and oxidizing of wax. The wax is considered as the first reason in damages on the wax-treated volume. Therefore, in this study we analysed the oxidation index of Korea traditional paper(Hanji) which is used as the restoration paper of the waxed volume in the annals of Joseon Dynasty by using FT-IR. As the analysis of FT-IR, the traditional two-layed stamping paper (Hanji sample F), which was treated by starch in its surface, was shown the most stable state after the accelerated ageing test.
The action of antioxidants was different depending on the environments where antioxidants were located. Although basic mechanisms of lipid oxidation and antioxidants were related each other, their contribution on the degree of oxidation was different. In thisreview, terminology on antioxidant properties were defined such as antioxidant activity and antioxidant capacities. In addition, antioxidant mechanisms including primary and secondary antioxidants or hydrogen donating or electron transferring antioxidants were introduced. Also, the impact of physical points of view and antioxidant polar paradox were introduced. Depending on the types of food matrice including bulk oil, oil-in-water emulsion (O/W), or solid state, antioxidant actions showed different degree and this point was explained in detail.
