  • Large quantity of extra soils discharged from excavation site in Songdo area can be treated by hardening agents and utilized in surface stabilized layer overlying thick reclaimed soft soil deposit. Though surface layer stabilization method using cement or lime for very soft soils has been studied in recent years, but studies on moderately soft clayey silt has not been tried. The purpose of this research is to investigate optimum mixing condition for stabilizing Songdo marine soil with low plasiticity. The optimum mixing conditions of hardening agents with Songdo soil such as kind of agents, mixing ratio, initial water content and curing time are investigated by uniaxial compression test and laboratory vane test. The results indicate that strength increases with high mixing ratio and long curing time, while decreases drastically under certain water content before mixing. Finally, optimum mixing condition considering economic efficiency and workability with test results was proposed.

  • This study was performed to estimate interrelation between characteristics of sediment and nutrient releare from sediment in Dae-cheong lake. For the investigations, sediments were sampled in June and October 1997 at fish farms, embayment, and the main stream of Dae-cheong lake. Items for investigation are as follows; water content, weight loss on ignition(IG), porosity of sediment, Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen(TKN), content of element(H, N, C), nutrient release rate. Water content and porosity were measured to conjecture the physical trait and grain size. And weight loss on ignition was measured to determine the contents of organic substance. For the determination of nutrient release rate, $PO_4-P$ and $NH_4-N$ concentration of interstitial water and overlying water were measured. Release rate of nutrients which has direct influenced upon the water quality were 0.05-8.63mg-$P/m^2{\cdot}day$ and 4.99-36.56mg-$N/m^2{\cdot}day$. And it was found that release rate was measured higher in the 1st sampling than in the 2nd sampling. And for determination of the humus level of sediment, carbon and nitrogen content were measured by using elemental analyzer. Generally, C/N ratio is used to determine humus level of lake sediment. As a result of elemental analysis, C/N ratio was determined in the range of 7.64~11.55, so humus level of Dae-cheong lake sediment was estimated from mesohumic state to oligohumic state.

  • A mathematical model was developed to understand how the presence of plants affects vertical profiles of electron acceptors, their reduced species, and trace metals in the wetland sediments. The model accounted for biodegradation of organic matter utilizing sequential electron acceptors and subsequent chemical reactions using stoichiometric relationship. These biogeochemical reactions were affected by the combined effects of oxygen release and evapotranspiration driven by wetland plants. The measured data showed that $SO_4{^{2-}}$ concentrations increased at the beginning of the growing season and then gradually decreased. Based on the measured data, it was hypothesized that the limitation of the solid phase sulfide in direct contact with the roots may result in the gradual decrease of $SO_4{^{2-}}$ concentrations. With the dynamic formulation for the limitation of the solid phase sulfide, model simulated time variable sulfate profiles using published model parameters. Oxygen release from roots produced divalent metal species (i.e. $Cd^{2+}$) as well as oxidized sulfur species (i.e. $SO_4{^{2-}}$) in the sediment pore water. Evapotranspiration-induced advection increased flux of divalent metal species from the overlying water column into the rhizosphere. The increased divalent metal species were converted to the metal sulfide with sufficient FeS around the rhizosphere, which contributed to the decrease of bioavailability and toxicity of divalent metal activity in the pore water. Since the divalent metal activity is a good predictor of the metal bioavailability, this model with a proper simulation of solid phase sulfide plays an essential role to predict the dynamics of trace metals in the wetland sediments.

  • A sediment exposure experiment was conducted to investigate the influence of acid volatile sulfides (AVS) and simultaneously extracted metals (SEM) in sediments on the bioavailability and toxicity of Cd, Ni and Zn to a marine polychaetes Neanthes arenaceodentata. The test animals were exposed to contaminated sediments spiked by metal mixtures of Cd, Ni, Zn (0.5~15 $\mu$mol/g of total SEM) in low (~1 $\mu$mol/g), medium (~5 $\mu$mol/g) and high AVS series (~10 $\mu$mol/g) to determine bioaccumulation, mortality and individual growth rate in each treatment after 20 days. Cd and Zn bioaccumulation in test animals increased with increasing of overlying water (OW) concentration controlled by AVS. In contrast, Ni bioaccumulation increased with increase of SEM concentration. Mortalities and growth inhibitions of N. arenaceodentata observed in only treatments with [SEM-AVS]>0, due to a high level of OW-Zn. With regard to the mortality, the 20-d LC5O value fur OW-Zn was 9.3(8.0$\pm$11.0) $\mu$M. The LOEC (Lowest Observed Effect Concentration) for Tissue-Zn was 7.8 $\mu$mol/g and the NOEC (No Observed Effect Concentration) was 6.2 $\mu$mol/g. Regarding the inhibition of individual growth rate, the LOEC fer Tissue-Zn was 5.9 $\mu$mol/g, and NOEC was 5.1 $\mu$mol/g. In this study, the toxicity of dissolved metals, especially for Zn, was overemphasized due to the reduced distribution coefficients (K$\_$d/s) of metals in the experimental sediments.

  • Sediment pollutants have been considered an important source for the eutrophication of estuarine reservoir. In this study, the effects of pollutants released from bottom sediment to water column were investigated. Sediment samples were collected each two station from Namyang and Sukmoon estuarine reservoirs in August 2013. The fractionation result of sediment phosphorus indicated that Adsorbed-P ($36.7{\pm}8.84%$) and Nonapatite-P ($29.3{\pm}12.50%$) are the two dominant phosphorus groups in the sediments. For sediment release test, eight sets of acrylic chamber (0.3 m $diameter{\times}1m$ high, with 0.15 m sediment depth) were used with aerobic and anaerobic environment. Under anaerobic conditions, rates of $NH_4-N$ release from the sediments were highly variable, with final concentrations of $NH_4-N$ in the overlying water varying from between about 0.69~1.04 in Namyang and 2.58~4.23 mg/L in Sukmoon reservoir. The $NH_4-N$ release was active at the upstream around the confluence of tributary compared to downstream near the embankment. The $PO_4-P$ release was more obvious than $NH_4-N$ in anaerobic condition. The final $PO_4-P$ concentrations were approximately from two-fold to eight-fold higher than initial concentration. In terms of reservoir water quality management, not only tributary pollutants but also sediment nutrient loading is necessary to consider the water quality contribution.

  • Pre-drainage of groundwater in the roof aquifer by boreholes is the main method for prevention of roof water disaster, and the drop in the water level during the drainage leads to the variation of the local stress in the overlying strata. Based on a multitude of boreholes for groundwater drainage from aquifer above the 1303 mining face of Longyun Coal Mine, theoretical analysis and numerical simulation are used to investigate the local stress variation in the process of borehole drainage. The results show that due to the drop in the water level of the roof aquifer during the drainage, the stress around the borehole gradually evolved. From the center of the borehole to the outside, a stress-relaxed zone, a stress-elevated zone, and a stress-recovered zone are sequentially formed. Along with the expansion of drainage influence, the stress peak in the stress-elevated zone also moves to the outside. When the radius of influence develops to the maximum, the stress peak position no longer moves outward. When the coal mining face advances to the drainage influence range, the abutment pressure in front of the mining face is superimposed with the high local stress around the borehole, which increases the risk of stress concentration. The present study provides a reference for the stress concentration caused by borehole drainage, which can be potentially utilized in the optimal arrangement of drainage boreholes in underground mining.

  • Unlike conventional treatment technologies, the performance of nature-based facilities were susceptible to seasonal changes and climatological variabilities. This study evaluated the effects of seasonal variables on the treatment performance of constructed wetlands (CWs). Two CWs treating runoff and discharge from agricultural and livestock areas were monitored to determine the efficiency of the systems in reducing particulates, organics, and nutrients in the influent. For all four seasons, the mean effluent suspended solids concentration in the agricultural CW (ACW) increased by -2% to -39%. The occurrence of algal blooms in the system during summer and fall seasons resulted to the greatest increase in the amount of suspended materials in the overlying water. unlike ACW, the livestock CW (LCW) performed efficiently throughout the year, with mean suspended solids removal amounting to 61% to 68%. Algal blooms were still present in LCW seasonally; however, the constant inflow in the system limited the proliferation of phytoplankton through continuous flushing. The total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) removal efficiencies in ACW were higher during the summer (21% to 25%) and fall (8% to 21%) seasons since phytoplankton utilize nitrogen and phosphorus during the early stages of phytoplankton blooms. In the case of LCW, the most efficient reduction in TN (24%) and TP (54%) concentrations were also noted in summer, which can be attributed to the favorable environmental conditions for microbial activities. The mean removal of organics in ACW was lowest during summer season (-52% to 35%), wherein the onset of algal decay triggered a relative increase in organic matter and stimulate bacterial growth. The removal of organics in LCW was highest (54 % to 55%) during the fall and winter seasons since low water temperatures may limit the persistence of various algal species. Variations in environmental conditions due to seasonal changes can greatly affect the performance of CW systems. This study effectively established the contributory factors affecting the feasibility of utilizing CW systems for treating agricultural and livestock discharges and runoff.

  • Nitrogen flux release from organically enriched sediments into overlying water, which may have significantly influence on water quality and increasing continuous eutrophication. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the remediation efficiency of oyster shell powder and its treated product into organically enriched sediment in terms of nitrogen flux, organic matter, chlorophyll-a, pH and dissolved oxygen (DO). The TOSP was mainly composed of CaO2. The application of TOSP into the sediment has increased the pH, DO and significantly decreased the concentrations of NH4+-N and T-N compared to other basins. On the other hand, nitrate was enriched with the addition of treated oyster powder, an oxygen releasing compound on both phases. Furthermore, chlorophyll-a was found to be increasing with time in the control basin meanwhile it dropped drastically with the addition of TOSP, which implied on the repression of algal growth owing to blockage of nitrogen source migrating from the sediment. This study has shown that the TOSP was effective to improve sediment-water quality, diminish eutrophication and control harmful algae blooms in a marine environment. Therefore, it is a good reference as an effective environmental remediation agent.

  • The purpose of the present study is to estimate the regional and seasonal variations of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) flux across the sediment-water interface of the inner and central areas of Hiroshima Bay from August 1994 to May 1995. In addition it compares the measured methods and estimates the effect of DIN released from sediment to the primary production of Hiroshima Bay. One method used in this study is to calculate DIN flux from a concentration gradient between sediment porewaters and the overlying water, and the other method is to measure DIN flux from the sediment-core experiment. The fluxes of $NH_{4}^{+}-N\;and\;NO_{2}^{+}\;+\;NO_{3}^{-}-N$ in the inner area were higher than those in central area, all of which showed seasonal variation. $NH_{4}^{+}-N$ flux was maximum in August, while $NO_{2}^{-}\;+\;NO_{3}^{-}-N$ flux was high in January compared with the other seasons. The calculated $NH_{4}^{+}-N\;and\;NO_{2}^{-}+NO_{3}^{-}-N$ fluxes from sediments were $18.2\~60.8\;{\mu}g-at/m^2{\cdot}hr\;and\;0.24\~18.2\;{\mu}g-at/m^2{\cdot}hr$, respectively. The measured $NH_{4}^{+}-N\;and\;NO_{2}^{-}+NO_{3}^{-}-N$ fluxes across the sediment-water interface were $2.00\~111\;{\mu}g-at/m^2{\cdot}hr\;and\;-265\~82.9\;{\mu}g-at/m^2{\cdot}hr$, respectively. The former was lower than the tatter. The calculated $NH_{4}^{+}-N$ flux showed closer relation to environmental factors (dissolved of gen in the overlying water, temperature and redox condition of the sediments) than the measured one did. On the other hand, in the case of $NO_{2}^{-}+NO_{3}^{-}-N$ flux both the calculated and the measured showed little relation to environmental factors, while they turned out to have stronger relation with their concentration in sediments. DIN released from the sediment is expected to support about $25\%\~67\%$ of the primary production in Hiroshima Bay.

  • Chlorophyll-a and its degradation products (pheopigment) contained in the sediment were determined to evaluate the eutrophication status in the downstream of Nakdong River. The chlorophyll-a and pheopigment concentrations of sediment ranged 11-646 mg $\mu \textrm m^{-2}$ (mean 172 mg $\mu \textrm m^{-2}$) and 48-1,564 mg $\mu \textrm m^{-2}$ (mean 454 mg $\mu \textrm m^{-2}$) over 11 sampling stations of the Nakdong River. The chloropigment concentrations in this local area were higher than other values reported previously and this river waters showed hypertrophic status in view of sedimentary chloropigment. Total chloropigment standing crops of sediment, which are the residuals after the longterm degradation, were 2.2-3.6 fold higher than chlorophyll-$\alpha$ contents of overlying water. The amounts of chloropigments of sediment suggest a large contribution of phytoplankton to the sediment. While chloropigment standing crops are evaluated with organic-C and nitrogen contents, the algal contribution to the carbon and nitrogen pool of the sediment were estimated to be approximately 30% and 40%, respectively.
