  • Surface treatments and their effects on high temperature properties for the Hastelloy X, which is a promising candidate alloy for high temperature heat-transport system, have been evaluated. For TiAlN and $Al_2O_3$ overlay coatings, the two different PVD (physical vapor deposition) methods using an arc discharge and a sputtering, were applied, respectively. In addition, a different surface treatment method of the diffusion coating by a pack cementation of Al (aluminiding) was also adopted in this study. To achieve enhanced thermal oxidation resistance at $1000^{\circ}C$ by suppressing the inhomogeneous formation of thick $Cr_2O_3$ crust at the surface region, a study for the surface modification methods on the morphological and structural properties of Hastelloy X substrates has been conducted. The structural and compositional properties of each sample were characterized before and after heat-treatment at $1000^{\circ}C$ under air and He environment. The results showed that the Al diffusion coating showed the more enhanced high temperature properties than the overlay coatings such as the suppressed thick $Cr_2O_3$ crust formation and lower wear loss.

  • High wear resistances are obtained with an additional coating of the surface of the decor film in the same operation of impregnating with low viscosity melamine resin by liquid overlay system. The cellulosic fibers have a good adhesion to the corundum particles and keep them sufficiently homogeneous in the blend with the resin. The amount of these fibers in nearly as big as it is in a common overlay in relation to the resin. Therefore these fibers keep the resin inside during the press process and consequently very the surface of the decor print of the film. That means that the corundum particles are equally dissipated throughout the entire layer over the decor. The change of the color of the print is nearly not visible as the particles are almost equally dissipated. Looking to the flooring purposes of liquid overlay one can see that by the lesser exposure of the corundum particles on the very surface, there is no longer an abrasive surface but a feeling like a normal melamine surface.

  • An inert gas atomized NiTiZrSiSn bulk metallic glass feedstock was sprayed onto the copper plate using vacuum plasma spraying process. In order to change the in-flight particle energy, that is, thermal energy, the hydrogen gas flow rate in plasma gas mixture was increased at the constant flow rate of argon gas. Coating and single pass spraying bead were produced with the least feeding rate. Regardless of the plasma gas composition, fully melted through unmelted particle could be observed on the overlay coating. However, the frequency of the unmelted particle number density was increased with the decrease of the hydrogen gas flow rate. The amorphous phase fraction within coating was also affected by the number density of the unmelted particle.

  • As old concrete pavements of over 20years in age are increasing in expressways, the repair and rehabilitation of concrete pavement have become an important issue. Although asphalt overlay is widely used as an alternative to rehabilitate the old concrete pavement, problems due to infiltrated water such as reflection crack and pothole are imposing a very serious threat to its performance. This study proposes waterproof membrane as a solution to minimize the damage due to reflection crack and infiltrated water, and accelerated pavement testing was carried out for the performance comparison of composite pavement with waterproof membrane and ordinary tack coating. The experiment used water spraying to simulate rainfall, and the behavior and moisture resistance characteristics of overlay pavement were analyzed. The experimental result indicated that the strain pattern of waterproof membrane section differed from ordinary tack coating section because waterproof membrane caused the asphalt pavement and concrete pavement to move together. Additionally, since waterproof membrane minimized the infiltration of water and delayed the occurrence of reflection crack by about 70% in comparison to ordinary tack coating method. Moreover, the damage due to infiltrated water also decreased.

  • The characteristics of selective oxidation prior to hot-dip galvanizing with the annealing atmosphere dew point and chemical composition in dual-phase steels and their effect on the inhibition layer formation relevant to coating adhesion have been studied using a combination of electron microscopic and surface analytical techniques. The annealed and also galvanized samples of 3 kinds of Si/Mn ratios with varied amounts of Si addition were prepared by galvanizing simulator. The dew point was controlled at soaking temperature $800^{\circ}C$ in 15%$H_2$ -85%$N_2$ atmosphere. It was shown that good adhesion factors were mainly uniformity of oxide particle distribution of low number density and low Si/Mn ratio prior to hot-dip galvanizing. Their effect was the greatly reduced coating bare spots and the formation of uniform inhibition layer leading to good adhesion of Zn overlay. The mechanism of good adhesion is suggested by two processes: the formation of inhibition layer on the oxide free surface uncovered with no $SiO_2$-containing particles in particular, and the inhibition layer bridging of oxide particles. The growth of inhibition layer was enhanced markedly by the delayed reaction of Fe and Al with the increase of Si/Mn ratio.

  • Interim dry cask storage systems comprising AISI 304 or 316 stainless steel canisters have become critical for the storage of spent nuclear fuel from light water reactors in the Republic of Korea. However, the combination of microstructural sensitization, residual tensile stress, and corrosive environments can induce chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking (CISCC) for stainless steel canisters. Suppressing one or more of these three variables can effectively mitigate CISCC initiation or propagation. Surface-modification technologies, such as surface peening and burnishing, focus on relieving residual tensile stress by introducing compressive stress to near-surface regions of materials. Overlay coating methods such as cold spray can serve as a barrier between the environment and the canister, while also inducing compressive stress similar to surface peening. This approach can both mitigate CISCC initiation and facilitate CISCC repair. Surface-painting methods can also be used to isolate materials from external corrosive environments. However, environmental variables, such as relative humidity, composition of surface deposits, and pH can affect the CISCC behavior. Therefore, in addition to research on surface modification and coating technologies, site-specific environmental investigations of various nuclear power plants are required.

  • Zinc coatings provide the most effective and economical way of protecting steel against corrosion. There are three types of galvanizing lines typically used in production line in galvanizing industries,Galvanize (GI) coating (Zn-0.1-0.3%Al), Galfan coating (Zn-5%Al), Galvalume(GL) coating (45%Zn-Al). In continuous Galvanizing lines, the immersed bath hardware (e.g. bearings, sink, stabilizer, and corrector rolls, and also support roll arms and snout tip) are subjected to corrosion and wear failure. Understanding the reaction of these materials with the molten Zn alloy is becomes scientific and commercial interest. To investigate the reaction with molten Zn alloys, static immersion test performed for 4, 8, 16, and 24 Hr. Two different baths used for the static immersion, which are molten Zn and molten Zn-55%Al. Microstructures characterization of each of the materials and intermetallic layer formed in the reaction zone was performed using optical microscope, SEM and EDS. The thickness of the reaction layer is examined using image analysis to determine the kinetics of the reaction. The phase dominated by two distinct phase which are eutectic carbide and matrix. The morphology of the intermetallic phase formed by molten Zn is discrete phase showing high dissolution of the material, and the intermetallic phase formed by Zn-55wt%Al is continuous. Aluminum reacts readily with the materials compare to Zinc, forming iron aluminide intermetallic layer ($Fe_2Al_5$) at the interface and leaving zinc behind.

  • Inconel 617 and Hastelloy X are the most promising candidate materials for the heat exchanger of next generation nuclear reactor. Surface coating and its effects on high temperature properties for the Inconel 617 and Hastelloy X under molten FLiNaK (LiF-NaF-KF) salt environment have been investigated. For TiAlN and $Al_2O_3$ overlay coatings, the two different PVD (physical vapor deposition) methods of an arc discharge and a sputtering were applied, respectively. A study for the thermal stability of the surface modified Ni-Cr alloy substrates has been conducted. To evaluate the corrosion mechanism of Ni-Cr alloys in the molten salt, a ruptured Inconel pipe used for the molten salt transportation has been analyzed. The thermal properties of morphological and structural properties each sample were characterized before and after heat-treatment at $600^{\circ}C$ in molten FLiNaK salt. The results showed that the TiAlN and $Al_2O_3$ overlay coated specimens had the enhanced high temperature stability.

  • In this paper, the sensing characteristics of a double cladding fiber (DCF) long-period fiber grating (LPFG) to the surrounding refractive index (SRI) are studied. The outer cladding of the DCF plays the role of the overlay, thus, the mode transition (MT) phenomenon of DCF can be induced by etching the outer cladding radius instead of coating overlays. The response characteristics of the effective refractive index (ERI) of the cladding mode to the outer cladding radius are analyzed. It is found that in the MT range, the change rate of ERIs of cladding modes is relatively larger than that for other ranges. Further, based on the features of the mode transition region (MTR), the phase-matching curve of the 11th cladding mode is investigated, and the response of the DCF-LPFG to the SRI is characterized by the change of wavelength intervals between the dual peaks under different outer cladding radii. The numerical simulation results show that the SRI sensitivity is greatly improved, which is available to 3484.0 nm/RIU with the fitting degree 0.998 in the SRI range of 1.33-1.37. The proposed DCF-LPFG can provide new theoretical support for designing the DCF-LPFG refractive index sensor with excellent performances of sensitivity, linearity and structure.

  • Embedded Railway Systems (ERS) will be adapted for wireless trams and will be constructed along city roadways. An asphalt layer should be overlaid on top of the concrete slab used as the trackbed structure in order to ensure smoothness and surface levels equal to those of existing road pavement in downtown city areas. However, the characteristics of an asphalt layer when used as overlay pavement for an ERS are complicated and the behavior of this material is not yet well defined and understood. Therefore, in this study, laboratory shear and tensile bond strength tests were conducted to investigate the bonding behavior of an asphalt layer in a multilayered trackbed section of an ERS. For the laboratory tests, a waterproof coating material was selected as a bonding material between the asphalt overlay and a concrete specimen. Valuable design parameters could be obtained based on the tensile and shear bond strength test results, providing information about the serviceability and durability of the overlaid pavements to be constructed alongside the ERS for wireless trams. In addition, a deformation analysis to assess the tensile strain generated due to truck axle loads at the interface between the asphalt layer and the concrete slab was conducted to verify the stability and performance of the asphalt layer.
