Visual and Quantitative Assessments of Regional Xenon-Ventilation Using Dual-Energy CT in Asthma-Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Overlap Syndrome: A Comparison with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

  • Objective: To assess the regional ventilation in patients with asthma-chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) overlap syndrome (ACOS) using xenon-ventilation dual-energy CT (DECT), and to compare it to that in patients with COPD. Materials and Methods: Twenty-one patients with ACOS and 46 patients with COPD underwent xenon-ventilation DECT. The ventilation abnormalities were visually determined to be 1) peripheral wedge/diffuse defect, 2) diffuse heterogeneous defect, 3) lobar/segmental/subsegmental defect, and 4) no defect on xenon-ventilation maps. Emphysema index (EI), airway wall thickness (Pi10), and mean ventilation values in the whole lung, peripheral lung, and central lung areas were quantified and compared between the two groups using the Student's t test. Results: Most patients with ACOS showed the peripheral wedge/diffuse defect (n = 14, 66.7%), whereas patients with COPD commonly showed the diffuse heterogeneous defect and lobar/segmental/subsegmental defect (n = 21, 45.7% and n = 20, 43.5%, respectively). The prevalence of ventilation defect patterns showed significant intergroup differences (p < 0.001). The quantified ventilation values in the peripheral lung areas were significantly lower in patients with ACOS than in patients with COPD (p = 0.045). The quantified Pi10 was significantly higher in patients with ACOS than in patients with COPD (p = 0.041); however, EI was not significantly different between the two groups. Conclusion: The ventilation abnormalities on the visual and quantitative assessments of xenon-ventilation DECT differed between patients with ACOS and patients with COPD. Xenon-ventilation DECT may demonstrate the different physiologic changes of pulmonary ventilation in patients with ACOS and COPD.

Five layers in turbulent pipe flow (난류 파이프 유동 내 다섯 개의 영역)

  • Five layers in mean flow are proposed by using the direct numerical simulation data of turbulent pipe flow up to Reτ = 3008. Viscous sublayer, buffer layer, mesolayer, log layer and core region are investigated. In the buffer layer, the viscous force is counterbalanced by the turbulent inertia from the streamwise mean momentum balance, and a log law occurs here. The overlap layer is composed of the mesolayer and the log layer. Above the buffer layer, the non-negligible viscous force causes the power law, and this region is the mesolayer, where it is the lower part of the overlap layer. At the upper part of the overlap layer, where the viscous force itself becomes naturally negligible, the log layer will appear due to that the acceleration force of the large-scale motions increases as the Reynolds number increases. In the core region, the velocity-defect form is satisfied with the power-law scaling.

  • The defects that are bound to arise in most construction projects cause disputes among the contracting parties regarding the defect warranty liability (DWL)guaranteed by the retention of the contractor's performance security at the end of the performance period of the contract. Most current projects involve a multiple-tier contractual relationship, causing the liability for some defects to overlap. In addition, many construction projects are made up of multiple detailed work types which an expert hired by the owner inspects the part completed by the contractor and pays an interim payment. However, after the completion of work, the contractor will still hold the defect warranty liability. In a scenario in which the work is delayed due to reasons for which the owner is responsible, the defect warranty liability period is also increased, imposing an additional burden on the contractor. In this study, basic research was carried out with the goal of reducing problems related to defect warranty liability Problems related to defect warranty liability cases and the nature of the defect warranty liability period were investigated. Possible solutions to the problems caused by the DWL that were suggested include the separation of the negligence liability period and the strict liability period, as well as the introduction of a retention money system.

Development of Film Fixing System for Improving Overlap Defects in the Film Insert Injection Molding Process (필름 인서트 사출성형 공정의 오버랩 불량 개선을 위한 필름 고정 시스템 개발)

  • We carried out research into an environmentally friendly injection molding process that involves filling the mold with polymer after thin films are fixed into the cavity, without the coating, plating process. Film insert injection molding is a new technique in which molten plastic resin is injected into the cavity after films are precisely attached to the side of the mold wall. In the film insert injection molding process, the insert film is moved by the flow of the molten plastic resin. Overlap defects cause a decline in the productivity and the quality of the manufactured goods. To reduce overlap defects, new injection mold parts are proposed to produce automotive exterior parts using thin films. It is suggested that the best possible method would be to fix the thin films to one side of the mold wall, and develop interior pins to fix the films in the mold. Based on this new pin fixing system, the problem of the film being moved by the flow of the molten resin was improved.

  • The horizontal filet welding is prevalently used in heavy and ship building industries to join the parts. The phenomena occurring in the horizonal fillet welding process are very complex and highly non-linear, so that its analysis is relatively difficult. Furthermore, various kinds of weld defect such as undercut, overlap, porosity. excess weld metal and incomplete penetration can be induced due to improper welding conditions. Among these defects, undercut, overlap and excess weld metal appear frequently in horizontal filet welding. To achieve a satisfactory weld bead geometry without weld defects, it is necessary to study the effect of welding conditions in the weld bead geometry. For analyzing the weld bead geometry with and without weld defects in horizontal fillet welding, a mathematical model was proposed in conjunction with a two-dimensional heat flow analysis adopted for computing the melting tone in . base metal. The reliability of the proposed model was evaluated through experiments. which showed that the proposed model was very effective for predicting the weld bead shape with or without weld defects in horizontal fillet welding.

  • Among various welding parameters, the welding current which is inversely proportional to the tip-to-workpiece distance in GMAW is an essential parameter to monitor the GMAW process of horizontal fillet joints. For the case of weld defect such as overlap in horizontal fillet welding, therefore, the signal processing for process monitoring or automatic seam tracking should be modified by considering the weld pool surface geometry including the corresponding weld defect. In other words, the adequate signal processing algorithm is indispensible to improve the performance of the arc sensor. However, arc sensor algorithm already developed usually focus on weld seam tracing but do not considering the weld qualities. In this paper, various experiments were carried out to investigate the tendencies of the weld defects when weaving motion is added, and the experimental method based on 2$^n$ factorial design was proposed for deriving the mathematical model between the leg length and the various welding conditions. Moreover, a signal processing method based on the artificial neural network(Adaptive Resonance Theory) was proposed far discriminating the current signal of sound weld beads from that of weld beads with overlap. Finally, the algorithm for weld seam tracking combined with the mathematical modeling and the signal processing method was carried out to track the weld line in conjunction with the improvement of the weld qualities. The reliability of the proposed algorithms were evaluated through various experiments, which showed that the proposed algorithms could be effectively used for arc welding automation.

  • The copper foil surface inspection system is necessary for the factory automation and product quality. The developed system is composed of the high speed line scan camera, the image capture board and the processing computer. For the system resource utilization and real-time processing, multi-threaded architecture is introduced. There are one image capture thread, 2 or more defect detection threads, and one defect communication thread. To process the high-speed input image data, the I/O overlap is used through the double buffering. The defect is first detected by the predetermined threshold. To cope with the light irregularity, the compensation process is applied. After defect detection, defect type is classified with the defect width, eigenvalue ratio of the defect covariance matrix and gray level of defect. In experiment, for high-speed input image data, real-time processing is possible with multi -threaded architecture, and the 89.4% of the total 141 defects correctly classified.

Study on Microstructures and Hardness of STS316L Fabricated by Selective Laser Melting (선택적 레이저 용융공정을 이용한 316L 스테인리스강 분말 3차원 조형체의 미세조직 및 경도 연구)

  • In this study, STS316L powders prepared by gas atomization are used to manufacture bulk structures with dimensions of $10{\times}10{\times}10mm^3$ using selective laser melting (SLM). The microstructures and hardness of the fabricated 316L stainless steel has been investigated with the laser beam overlap varied from 10% to 70%. The microstructures of the fabricated STS316L samples show a decrease in the balling and satellite of powders introducing defect in the bulk samples and the porosity caused by the gap between the molten metal pools disappearing as the overlap ratio increases, whereas a low overlap ratio results in significant balling and a large amount of isolated powders due to the increased gap between the melt pools. Furthermore, the highest value in Vickers hardness is obtained for the sample fabricated by 30% overlapped laser beams. These results show that the overlap ratio of laser beams in the SLM process should be considered as an important process parameter.

Effect of modifying the thickness of the plate at the level of the overlap length in the presence of bonding defects on the strength of an adhesive joint

  • Adhesive bonding is currently widely used in many industrial fields, particularly in the aeronautics sector. Despite its advantages over mechanical joints such as riveting and welding, adhesive bonding is mostly used for secondary structures due to its low peel strength; especially if it is simultaneously exposed to temperature and humidity; and often presence of bonding defects. In fact, during joint preparation, several types of defects can be introduced into the adhesive layer such as air bubbles, cavities, or cracks, which induce stress concentrations potentially leading to premature failure. Indeed, the presence of defects in the adhesive joint has a significant effect on adhesive stresses, which emphasizes the need for a good surface treatment. The research in this field is aimed at minimizing the stresses in the adhesive joint at its free edges by geometric modifications of the ovelapping part and/or by changing the nature of the substrates. In this study, the finite element method is used to describe the mechanical behavior of bonded joints. Thus, a three-dimensional model is made to analyze the effect of defects in the adhesive joint at areas of high stress concentrations. The analysis consists of estimating the different stresses in an adhesive joint between two 2024-T3 aluminum plates. Two types of single lap joints(SLJ) were analyzed: a standard SLJ and another modified by removing 0.2 mm of material from the thickness of one plate along the overlap length, taking into account several factors such as the applied load, shape, size and position of the defect. The obtained results clearly show that the presence of a bonding defect significantly affects stresses in the adhesive joint, which become important if the joint is subjected to a higher applied load. On the other hand, the geometric modification made to the plate considerably reduces the various stresses in the adhesive joint even in the presence of a bonding defect.

Laser Welding Characteristics of Aluminum and Copper Sheets for Lithium-ion Batteries (자동차 이차전지 제조를 위한 알루미늄과 무산소동의 레이저 용접특성)

  • Several joining methods involving resistance welding, laser welding, ultrasonic welding and mechanical joining are currently applied in manufacturing lithium-ion batteries. Cu and Al alloys are used for tab and bus bar materials, and laser welding characteristics for these alloys were investigated with similar and dissimilar material combinations in this study. The base materials used were Al 1050 and oxygen-free Cu 1020P alloys, and a disk laser was used with a continuous wave mode. In bead-on-plate welding of both alloys, the joint strength was higher than the strength of O tempered base material. In overlap welding, the effect of welding parameters on the tensile shear strength and bead shape was evaluated. Tensile shear strength of overlap welded joint was affected by interfacial bead width and weld defect formation. The tensile-shear specimen was fractured at the heat affected zone by selecting proper laser welding parameters.
