The objectives of this study are to develop a deterministic, distributed, and event - oriented hydrologic watershed model and to test the applicabilities of the model to small watersheds. The resulting model SRAFEM, Storm Runoff Analysis by Finite Element Method, is capable of simulating storm runoff from small watersheds using two - dimensional overland flow and one - dimensional channel flow components by. kinematic approximations and finite element method. Two small watersheds were selected and the applicability of the model was tested. The test results showed that the mean simulation errors for runoff volume and peak flow were 13.9% and 19.1 % for Yeonwha watershed. They were 42.8% and 8.0% for Banweol watershed, respectively.
In this paper distributed models for simulating spatially and temporally varied moving storm in a watershed were developed. The complete simulation in a watershed is achieved through two sequential flow simulations which are overland flow simulation and channel network flow simulation. Two dimensional continuity equation and momentum equation of kinematic approximation were used in the overland flow simulation. On the other hand, in the channel network simulation two types of governing equations which are one dimensional continuity and momentum equations between two adjacent sections in a channel, and continuity and energy equations at a channel junction were applied. The finite difference formulations were used in the channel network model. Macks Creek Experimental Watershed in Idaho, USA was selected as a target watershed and the moving storm on August 23, 1965, which continued from 3:30 P.M. to 5:30 P.M., was utilized. The rainfall intensity fo the moving storm in the watershed was temporally varied and the storm was continuously moved from one place to the other place in a watershed. Furthermore, runoff parameters, which are soil types, vegetation coverages, overland plane slopes, channel bed slopes and so on, are spatially varied. The good agreement between the hydrograph simulated using distributed models and the hydrograph observed by ARS are Shown. Also, the conservations of mass between upstreams and downstreams at channel junctions are well indicated and the wpatial and temporal vaiability in a watershed is well simulated using suggested distributed models.

A modified kinematic wave model of the overland flow in vegetated filter strips was developed. The model can predict both flow depth and hydraulic radius of the flow. Existing models can predict only mean flow depth. By using the hydraulic radius, erosion, deposition and flow's transport capacity can be more rationally computed. Spacing hydraulic radius was used to compute flow's hydraulic radius. Numerical solution of the model was accomplished by using both a second-order nonlinear scheme and a linear solution scheme. The nonlinear portion of the model ensures convergence and the linear portion of the model provides rapid computations. This second-order nonlinear scheme minimizes numerical computation errors that may be caused by linearization of a nonlinear model. This model can also be applied to golf courses, parks, no-till fields to route runoff and production and attenuation of many nonpoint source pollutants.
Characteristics of runoff and groundwater qualities from a pasture and field were investigated. Flumes and monitoring wells were installed and water qualities of $NO_3$-N, TP and TKN were monitored from Aug. 1993 to Aug. 1994. Runoff from the pasture which was a sandy soil with cobbles mostly formed with seeping water at the bottom of it. But once overland flow occurred because of heavy rainfall, runoff increased sharply. $NO_3$-N concentration in pasture runoff was relatively stable ranging between 0.241-3.962mg/l. TP and TKN concentrations were stable but sharply increased once overland flow occurred. $NO_3$-N concentration in pasture groundwater was relatively stable regardless of depth of monitoring wells but TP and TKN concentrations were smaller in deeper wells. Runoff from the field which was flat and covered well with Sudan grass and surface residue was relatively small and $NO_3$-N, TP and TKN concentrations in runoff were stable and seemed unaffected by flow rate. $NO_3$-N concentration in field groundwater increased at the rate of 2.2mg/l per 100 m during a growing season as groundwater flows through the field. No significant differences in TP and TKN concentrations between the upper and lower areas in field groundwater were detected.

An optimization model is presented that can be used in the determination of a loss rate function and conceptual runoff models using observed rainfall and runoff data. In order to estimate the lumped parameters and to control inputs of the model, the differential equations, linear for underground flow and non-linear for overland flow, are transformed into state equations. Parameters of a loss rate function and runoff model under stationary assumption can be determined by the following procedures: optimization technique, linear control and non-linear curve fitting theory using several multiperiod storms simultaneously or using individual multiperiod storms. An infiltration equation that includes rainful intensity is used to dtermine the effective rainfall for a given rain of varying. The optimization model is applied to storms in Hyong Song watershed of Wonju area. The results of the new model are compared with earlier one.
In this paper, a moving storm in the real watershed was simulated using a distributed model. Macks Creek Experimental Watershed in Idaho, USA was selected as a target watershed and the moving storm of August 23, 1965, which continued from 3:30 P.M. to 5:30 P.M., was utilized. The rainfall intensity of the moving storm in the watershed was temporally varied and the storm was continuously moved from one place to the other place in a watershed. Furthermore, runoff parameters, which are soil types, vegetative cover percentages, overland plane slopes, channel bed slopes and so on, are spatially varied. The model developed in the previous paper was utilized as a distributed model for simulating the moving storm. In the model, runoff in a watershed was simulated as two parts which are overland flow and channel flow parts. The good agreement was obtained between a simulated hydrograph using a distributed model and an observed hydrograph. Also, the conservations of mass are well indicated between upstream and downstream at channel junctions.

Physically-based WEPP watershed version was applied to a watershed, located at Jawoon-ri, Gangwon with very detailed rainfall data, rather than daily rainfall data. Then it was validated with measured sediment data collected at the sediment settling ponds and through overland flow. The $R^2$ and the EI for runoff comparisons were 0.88 and 0.91, respectively. For sediment comparisons, the $R^2$ and the EI values were 0.95 and 0.91. Since the WEPP provides higher accuracies in predicting runoff and sediment yield from the study watershed, various slope scenarios (2%, 3%, 5.5%, 8%, 10%, 13%, 15%, 18%, 20%, 23%, 25%, 28%, 30%) were made and simulated sediment yield values were analyzed to develop appropriate soil erosion management practices. It was found that soil erosion increase linearly with increase in slope of the field in the watershed. However, the soil erosion increases dramatically with the slope of 20% or higher. Therefore special care should be taken for the agricultural field with higher slope of 20% or higher. As shown in this study, the WEPP watershed version is suitable model to predict soil erosion where torrential rainfall events are causing significant amount of soil loss from the field and it can also be used to develop site-specific best management practices.

The paper presents the development and applications of physically-based urban runoff analysis model, URAM, which is capable of simulating sewer runoff hydrographs and inundation conditions within a small urban catchment. The model considers three typical flow conditions of urban drainage networks, whichn are overland flow, gutter flow, and conduit flow during a storm. Infiltration, retention storage and flow routing procedures are physically depicted in model. It was tested satisfactorily with field data from a tested catchment having drainage area of 4.91 ha. It was also applied to other urban areas and found to adequately simulate inundation areas and duration as observed during storms. The test results as well as model components are described in the paper.
A grid-based KInematic were STOrm Runoff Model (KIMSTORM) with predicts temporal and spatial distributions of saturalted orerland flow, subsurface flow and stream flow in a watershed was developed. The model adopts the single overland flowpath algorithm and simulates surface and/or subsurface water depth at each grid element by using grid-based water balance of hydrologic components. The model which is programmed by C-language uses ASCII-formatted map data supported by the irregular gridded map of the GRASS(Geographic Resources Analysis Support System) GIS and generates the spatial distribution maps of discharge, flow depth and soil moisture within the watershed.
