  • The Elastic modulus depends on the elastic property of composition materials, the gravity of aggregate, the bond strength of binder, the usage and quantity of admixture, curing and measuring method, etc. Accordingly, the aim of this study, by manufacturing concrete of practical high strength range(600~ 1000kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$) with the specific cement and mineral admixtures, is to compare elastic modulus with the existing equations and also to estimate elastic property of use materials. As a result, it could be confirmed that the existing equations which were proposed by the ACI 363, CEB-FIP Code, and New-RC have a tendency to the overestimation in general. However, it could be confirmed that the KCI-96 and Norwegian NS 3473 equations are closed to measuring results, and that the elastic modulus property have a different tendency due to types of cements.

  • The tension stiffening effect, which means the maintaining a part of stiffness after cracking of concrete in tensile, exists at a reinforced concrete member because of the concrete softening and bonding stress between cracks. It is required to consider it for precise analysis and evaluation o structural behavior, due to the possibility of discrepancy between the actual behavior and the analysis without considering the tension stiffening effect. Making and adopting a tension stiffening model is the most simple and effective way for considering it at nonlinear analysis which indicated the estimation from models and experimental results were similar each others. The comparisons on RC beam were, also performed in order to analyzed the influence of concrete strength and steel ratio into the structural behavior. They indicated that the results from analysis estimated quite closely to the test results at low steel ratio, however, overestimated at high steel ratio. The overestimation increase linearly as concrete strength or steel ratio increased.

  • The steam generator tubes of the nuclear power plant should be inspected using eddy current techniques. Recently the crack-like defects become a major concern for the integrity of the steam generator tubes. These defects could be detected by the MRPC(Motorized Rotating Pancake Coil) method, not by the conventional bobbin coil method. In this paper it has been attempted to estimate the length of the cracks at the tube expansion region using of MRPC technique. The lengths of both axial and circumferential cracks show a tendency of overestimation compared to the real lengths. As the depths of the defects decrease from 100% through 50% of the wall thickness, the error of the length estimation is increased.

  • The economic world is full of patterns, many of which exert a profound influence over society and business. One of the most contentious is the distribution of wealth. Way back in 1897, an Italian engineer-turned-economist named Vilfredo Pareto discovered a pattern in the distribution of wealth that appears to be every bit as universal as the laws of thermodynamics or chemistry. The present paper proposes some Bayes estimators of shape parameter of Pareto income distribution in censored sampling. Asymmetric LINEX loss function has been considered to study the effects of overestimation and underestimation. For the prior distribution of the parameter involved a number of priors including one and two-parameter exponential, truncated Erlang and doubly truncated gamma have been contemplated to express the belief of the experimenter s/he has regarding the parameter. The estimators thus obtained have been compared theoretically and empirically with the corresponding estimators under squared error loss function, some of which were reported by Bhattacharya et al. (1999).

  • A reasonable J-resistance curve determination procedure is suggested by correcting the amount of overestimation in J-value whose effect becomes significant when crack grows. Experiments using compact tension specimens of an alloy steel (SCM4, K.S. Designation) are performed. The value of J estimated according to this procedure is compared with that as obtained from the method by Merkle and Corten. The conditions for J controlled crack growth proposed by Hutchinson and Paris are examined for the material used here. It appears that J resistance curve, which is independent of crack ratio can be obtained for those specimens satisfying the conditions of J controlled crack growth.

  • In substitution of beam-nonlinear spring model for real-car, it may have errors due to complicated characteristics of joint and overestimation of joints stiffness. In this research, a method for the joint modeling was suggested by nonlinear static and dynamic analyses of beam and shell joint models and verified by the application of accomplished joint modeling method to simplified full car model. In consequence, modified simplified full car model was improved in local acceleration and rigid wall force. Finally, the frontal crash analyses with the dummy were established and the accelerations of accelerations of head, chest and pelvis had good agreements with those of shell model.

  • The accurate characterization of paper structure may provide critical information for ideal selection of raw materials and papermaking processes as well as for predicting the behavior and the quality of final paper products. In this study, local paper structure and the relationship among the structural parameters, thickness, grammage, apparent density and surface roughness of various handsheet and commercial paper samples were evaluated by using recently developed methods. A new concept of surface roughness was also introduced. The results demonstrate that there is significant overestimation in the measured thickness when using the conventional caliper method that originates from the surface roughness and poor paper formation. A novel non-contact thickness tester, referred to as the twin laser profilometer(TLP), provided results that were not subject to these artifacts and thus provided the local intrinsic thickness and consequently the local intrinsic apparent density.

  • This paper deals with d-q axis equivalent circuit analysis of IPMSM(Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors) considering voltage harmonics. In the field weakening region, as the current vector angle increased, back-emf contains large harmonics, therefore, significant underestimation of voltage or overestimation of speed can be occurred from the conventional d-q axis equivalent circuit analysis. In order to consider the effects of voltage harmonics, a harmonic coefficient is introduced and verified by experiments.

  • In the flood prediction research, it is pointed out that the difficulty of flood prediction is the frequently experienced overestimation of flood peak. That is caused by the rainfall prediction difficulty and the nonlinearity of hydrological phenomena. Even though the former reason will remain still unsolved, but the latter one can be possibly resolved the method of the AMRA (Auto Regressive Moving Average) model for each runoff component as developed by Dr. Hino and Dr. Hasebe. The principle of the method consists of separating though the numerical filters the total runoff time series into long-term, intermediate and short-term components, or ground water flow, interflow, and surface flow components. As a total system, a hydrological system is a non-linear one. However, once it is separated into two or three subsystems, each subsystem may be treated as a linear system. Also the rainfall components into each subsystem a estimated inversely from the runoff component which is separated from the observed flood. That is why flood prediction can be done without rainfall data. In the prediction of surface flow, the Kalman filter will be applicable but this paper shows only impulse function method.

  • The objective of this study is to evaluate the liquefaction cyclic shear stress ratio considering the soil uncertainty. In this study, the probabilistic ground response analysis and the cyclic shear stress ratio analysis for the liquefaction potential evaluation are performed considering the soil variability. The statistical properties of input ground parameters were analyzed to investigate the parameters affecting the seismic response analysis. The Probabilistic analysis was carried out by Monte Carlo Simulation method. The ground response analysis was performed considering the soil variability and the probability distribution characteristics of the ground acceleration. The probability distribution of the peak ground acceleration by seismic characteristics was presented. The differences of liquefaction shear stress ratio results according to soil variability were compared and analyzed. The maximum acceleration of the ground by the deterministic method was analyzed to be overestimation of the ground amplification phenomenon. Also, the shear stress ratio was overestimated.
