Overall Vibration Values for Reliable Wind Turbines - The New VDI 3834 and the New ISO 10816-21 Guideline Close a Gap - Less Vibration is Better -

  • Condition-based maintenance on wind turbines not only involves maintenance, but also encompasses servicing, inspection, measurement and evaluation of the condition of the unit. The current condition can be evaluated on the basis of machine-specific overall vibration values. Until now, overall vibration values had not been defined for wind turbines. In fact, ISO 10816-3 explicitly excludes wind power plants. The new VDI 3834 closes this gap shown in Sheet 1: Vibration values for wind turbines up to 3 MW. In addition to the new VDI 3834 is the ISO 10816-21 in preparation. The author of the article Dr. Edwin Becker is the nominated expert for Germany.

회귀분석을 이용한 소형 유니버셜 모터의 진동해석 (Vibration Analysis of Small Universial Motor by Regression Analysis)

  • The regression analysis in the six sigma process is used to reduce the vibration of an electric grinder. The vibration characteristics and the contribution of each part to overall vibration of the electric grinder is investigated through various vibration measurements and frequency analysis for the assembled and disassembled one. Then the application of the regression analysis finds out that the rotating components of the armature have more severe contributions to the overall vibration than the frequency components of the fan or the gear part, which is decided with higher value of the coefficient of determination. The unbalance and looseness of the armature and the fan are tested again by the regression analysis in order to decide how much unbalance or looseness should be reduced for the predetermined goal of vibration level of the electric grinder. These results show that the regression analysis can be a valuable tool in production line to decide where and how much faults needs to be adjusted for the reduction of vibration and noise.

왕복동식 압축기의 방사소음 저감 (Reduction of Radiated Noise in a Reciprocating Compressor)

  • Generally, noise in a reciprocating compressor is attributed to the driving force of a pump. However, close examination shows that the noise heard by customers finally results from radiation of a shell in a compressor, the noise caused by both transmission through a shell and resonance with the natural frequency of a shell. Therefore, the peak frequencies contributing to the overall level of a compressor' noise are closely concerned with vibration of a shell. That's why radiated noise by vibration can be reduced by changing the mode of a shell and by shifting the peak frequencies to other ranges, which are not globally related with the overall noise level. In this paper, the main peak frequencies are analyzed to reduce the radiated noise of a shell, and the vibration characteristics of a shell are examined through Frequency Response Function and Finite Element Analysis. Moreover, the Operational Deflection Shape for a shell is measured with consideration of real driving force of a pump. Finally, the optimum position on a shell, closely related to the main peak frequencies, is found, and the overall noise level caused by radiated noise of a shell is noticeably reduced by mass or stiffness modification of the position.

Ride Quality Investigation of Passenger Cars on Different Road Conditions

  • Objective: The ride qualities of the six passenger cars were evaluated in 4 subjects on the highway and uneven road. The relation between vibration with driving velocity and driving posture were also investigated separately. Background: Ride comfort plays an important role in the vehicle design. Vibration is the one of the principal components associated with ride comfort. Method: The acceleration of the foot, hip and back were measured using B&K accelerometers in this study. The velocity of the passenger cars was maintained at a constant speed of 80km/h on the highway and 40km/h on the uneven road. For evaluating the effects of driving velocity and driving posture on vehicle's vibration level, separate experiments were performed on the highway with 5 different vehicle speeds and 5 different backrest angles, respectively. Results: The overall ride value of the luxury car showed the best result while the smaller car showed the worst value on the highway. On the uneven road the overall ride value level was increased 75~98%. All the vehicles had the SEAT value less than 1. Faster the velocity lowers the SEAT value. The ride quality in terms of vibration gets worst when the backrest angle increased. Conclusion: The smaller car had a first mode at the higher frequency and showed higher vibration level. SEAT value was mostly affected by the seat property not by vehicle. We ranked the luxury car seat had a best vibration reduction quality than others based on SEAT values. When the driving velocity increased, the overall ride values were increased proportionally and the SEAT values were somewhat decreased.   • The psychological, physiological, and material effects of ground vibrations induced from railroad were surveyed with the magnitudes of vibration sensing using questionnaire on residents living near railroad. These magnitude of vibration sensing and effects were compared as rate or percent total based on double distances from railraod. Also overall effects of railraod vibrations were compared with vibration levels measured or predicted. The about 70% of residents living within 40m from railroad sense railroad vibration, 15% of residents are influenced phychologically. But physilogical and material effects disappeared beyond 40m.

  • Consumer's product selection measures are being shifted from the units' operational performance to overall performance. Low noise, low vibration, and low power consumption rate, etc. which used to be additional quality indices, now become vital performance factors. Especially, noise and vibration characteristics are being considered as equivalent to/or even more critical than operational performance in certain products such as office machines and home entertainment systems, which share the same space with human being's daily life. Therefore, noise reduction and sound quality improvement technology becomes an inevitable design issue for those applications. Qualitative noise characteristics of rotating polygonal disk applied to digital printer systems are presented. Overall sound pressure level change and tonal noise variation with respect to the geometrical properties of polygonal disk, operational speed, and others are briefly discussed based on experimental results.

Free vibration analysis of cracked Timoshenko beams carrying spring-mass systems

  • In this paper, an analytical approach is proposed for determining vibration characteristics of cracked non-uniform continuous Timoshenko beam carrying an arbitrary number of spring-mass systems. This method is based on the Timoshenko beam theory, transfer matrix method and numerical assembly method to obtain natural frequencies and mode shapes. Firstly, the beam is considered to be divided into several segments by spring-mass systems and support points, and four undetermined coefficients of vibration modal function are contained in each sub-segment. The undetermined coefficient matrices at spring-mass systems and pinned supports are obtained by using equilibrium and continuity conditions. Then, the overall matrix of undetermined coefficients for the whole vibration system is obtained by the numerical assembly technique. The natural frequencies and mode shapes of a cracked non-uniform continuous Timoshenko beam carrying an arbitrary number of spring-mass systems are obtained from the overall matrix combined with half-interval method and Runge-Kutta method. Finally, two numerical examples are used to verify the validity and reliability of this method, and the effects of cracks on the transverse vibration mode shapes and the rotational mode shapes are compared. The influences of the crack location, depth, position of spring-mass system and other parameters on natural frequencies of non-uniform continuous Timoshenko beam are discussed.

  • Generally, noise from a indoor air conditioner has been measured by overall sound pressure level, dB. Customers evaluation, however, of the noise from an air conditioners should not be depend on the only overall level but also the sensory feeling. Moreover, in this sensory evaluation, irregular, time-varying and uneven sounds which are difficult to describe itself by overall level are more affectable. Unfortunately however the formal evaluation method for this kinds of noise is not determined yet. In this research, the evaluation method for tonal noise, which is one of the unmeasurable sounds by overall level, is proposed to evaluate its acceptability based on the consumer's sense of hearing. To consider the consumer's sense, several times of Jury evaluation are carried out. The proposed approach could be applied to the other sound, which acoustical characteristics are similar to the tonal noise .
