Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the thermal protective function of firefighter clothes and gloves through real scale fire simulations. Methods: Firstly, the fire simulation by real scale flame was performed for firefighter clothes. A manikin equipped with firefighter clothes was directly exposed to flames which energy average is 84 Kw/m2. for 22 seconds. Heat flux gauges attached on the body measured surface temperature elevation. Secondly, we also performed the other fire simulation by hot plate exposure to firefighter gloves. Firefighter gloves with heat flux gauges exposed hot plate which temperature is 300℃ in both dry and moist conditions. Primary outcome was surface temperature change of manikin body (first simulation) and hand (second simulation) over times. Results: In the first flame simulation, the surface temperature of face and shoulders elevated more rapidly comparing with the other body surface area when initial period of flame shutter open. After 18sec of shutter open, the surface temperature of upper trunk elevated rapildy. After shutter closure, high surface temperature kept continuously on right side of face and left shoulder. In the second hot plate simulation, fingers and palms showed higher surface temperature than the other areas of hands in the both dry and wet conditions. Conclusion: This study suggests that the real scale flame enables firefighter clothes to lose their heat protective function suddenly after 18 seconds. Additionally, the protective function of firefighter gloves were relatively weaker in the palmar side of fingers than the other parts of hand. There should be additional study for evaluate thermal protection performance of firefighter clothes. And, further effort for reinforce palmar side of fingers of firefighter gloves should be done.

Background: This study analyzes the differences in the annual averaged atmospheric dispersion factor and ground deposition factor produced using two classification methods of atmospheric stability, which are based on a vertical temperature difference and the standard deviation of horizontal wind direction fluctuation. Materials and Methods: Daedeok and Wolsong nuclear sites were chosen for an assessment, and the meteorological data at 10 m were applied to the evaluation of atmospheric stability. The XOQDOQ software program was used to calculate atmospheric dispersion factors and ground deposition factors. The calculated distances were chosen at 400 m, 800 m, 1,200 m, 1,600 m, 2,400 m, and 3,200 m away from the radioactive material release points. Results and Discussion: All of the atmospheric dispersion factors generated using the atmospheric stability based on the vertical temperature difference were shown to be higher than those from the standard deviation of horizontal wind direction fluctuation. On the other hand, the ground deposition factors were shown to be same regardless of the classification method, as they were based on the graph obtained from empirical data presented in the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's Regulatory Guide 1.111, which is unrelated to the atmospheric stability for the ground level release. Conclusion: These results are based on the meteorological data collected over the course of one year at the specified sites; however, the classification method of atmospheric stability using the vertical temperature difference is expected to be more conservative.
Dimensionally stable anodes have been widely used to cathodically protect the metallic materials in corrosive environments including concrete structure as the insoluble anode. Lifespan of the anode for concrete construction can be determined by NACE TM0294-94 method. Lifespan of conductive oxide electrode would be affected by thermal treatment condition in the process of sol-gel coatings. This work aims to evaluate the effect of thermal treatment temperature on the lifespan of the $RuO_{2}$ electrode. $450^{\circ}C$ treated conductive oxide electrode showed the excellent properties and its lifespan was evaluated to be over 88 years in 3% NaCl, 4% NaOH, and simulated pore water. This behavior was related to the formation of $RuO_{2}$.

It was determined whether thermoluminescence (TL) technique is a potential method to detect post-irradiation of dry soup base mix for instant noodle and its ingredients. The ingredients or the mixtures were irradiated, from which minerals were isolated using sodium polytungstate solution. Their TL signals (1st glow TL intensity/2nd glow TL intensity reirradiated at 48.6 Gy) were measured. The TL signals in temperature ranges of $229{\sim}295^{\circ}C$ and $229{\sim}361^{\circ}C$ showed larger differences between unirradiated and irradiated samples compared to other ranges. The average TL signals for unirradiated garlic powder, ginger powder, black pepper powder, onion powder, red pepper powder, and sesame seeds were below 0.2, while those for onion powder, red pepper powder, and sesame seeds irradiated at 10 kGy were over 20 in the two temperature ranges. The average TL signals for unirradiated soup mixture were 0.08 and 0.1, respectively, in the two temperature ranges, while those for the mixtures containing 10 kGy-irradiated onion powder, red pepper powder, and sesame seeds individually or in combination were over 7. The average TL signals for the mixtures irradiated 1, 5, and 10 kGy were over 10.
A Radiation Alarm Monitor has been developed and manufactured in order to protect radiation workers from over-exposure. A visual and audible alarm system has been attached to initiate evacuation when accident occurs such as an unexpected change of radiation level or an over-exposure. The Radiation Alarm Monitor installed with microprocessor can record the information of radiation field change between 90 min. before the alarm and 30 min. after the alarm and also provide the data to an IBM compatible computer to analyze the accidents and to set a counterplan. It features a wide detection range of radiation field(10 mR/h-100 R/h), radiation field data storage, portability, high precision (${\pm}5%$) due to self-calibration function, and adaption of a powerful alarm system. According to ANSI N42.17A, the most stringent test standards, performance tests were carried out under various conditions of temperature, humidity, vibration, and electromagnetic wave hindrance at Korea Research Institute of Standards & Science (KRISS). As a result, the Radiation Alarm Monitor passed all tests.
Concrete filled steel tubular (CFST) composite girder is a new type of structures for bridge constructions. The existing design codes cannot be used to predict the thermal stress in the CFST truss girder structures under solar radiation. This study is to develop the temperature gradient curves for predicting thermal stress of the structure based on field and laboratory monitoring data. An in-field testing had been carried out on Ganhaizi Bridge for over two months. Thermal couples were installed at the cross section of the CFST truss girder and the continuous data was collected every 30 minutes. A typical temperature gradient mode was then extracted by comparing temperature distributions at different times. To further verify the temperature gradient mode and investigate the evolution of temperature fields, an outdoor experiment was conducted on a 1:8 scale bridge model, which was installed with both thermal couples and strain gauges. The main factors including solar radiation and ambient temperature on the different positions were studied. Laboratory results were consistent with that from the in-field data and temperature gradient curves were obtained from the in-field and laboratory data. The relationship between the strain difference at top and bottom surfaces of the concrete deck and its corresponding temperature change was also obtained and a method based on curve fitting was proposed to predict the thermal strain under elevated temperature. The thermal stress model for CFST composite girder was derived. By the proposed model, the thermal stress was obtained from the temperature gradient curves. The results using the proposed model were agreed well with that by finite element modelling.
Purpose: Under the purpose of presenting the adequate remodeling period for the improvement of thermal insulation performance of external walls in deteriorated buildings, the change in external wall and residential environment problem(dew condensation) due to aged deterioration after the apartments were constructed in Korea were analyzed. Method: Temperature Difference Ratio Outside(TDRo) and Heat Flow Meter(HFM) were used as measurement methods to evaluate the thermal insulation performance of deteriorated buildings. For TDR evaluation, thermo-graphic camera was used to measure and analyze the surface temperature of external wall. Also, dew condensation evaluation was analyzed using the Temperature Difference Ratio Inside(TDRi). Result: As a result of analyzing thermal performance through TDRo, the first decline point of thermal insulation performance began after 14-16 years have passed since construction was completed, and after 20 years have passed the decline point of thermal insulation performance reappeared. As a result of analyzing U-value with HFM measurement method, the decline rate of external wall's thermal insulation performance is lower than 2% in average at around 5 years after completion, and 8.7% in average at 10-15 years, and over 10.2% in average at 20 years.
An estimation methodology of the mass and energy (M/E) release due to the main steam line break (MSLB) has been developed with the RETRAN-3D code. In the case of equipment qualification (EQ), the over-estimated temperature would exceed the design limits of some cables or valves. In order to have a more flexible EQ profiles from the MSLB M/E release, the methodology with the best-estimated code was used. The major conditions affecting the MSLB M/E were found to be the initial SG level, heat transfer between primary and secondary sides, power level, operable protection system, main or auxiliary feedwater availability, and break conditions. The RETRAN-3D models were developed for the Kori unit 1 (KRN-1) which is typical two loop Westinghouse (WH) designed plant. Particularly, a detailed model of the steam generators was developed to estimate a more realistic two-phase heat transfer effect of the steam flow. After the modeling, the methodology has been developed through the sensitivity analyses. The M/E release data generated from the analyses have been used as the input to the inside containment pressure and temperature (P/T) analysis. According to the results at the point of view containment P/T, the Kori unit 1 can have more margin of 5∼15 ㎪ in pressure and 8∼15$^{\circ}C$ in temperature.

Alpha-phase alumina TGO(Thermally Grown Oxide) forms on the interface between zirconia top coat and bond coat of thermal barrier coating system for superalloys during exposure to high temperature over $1000^{\circ}C$. It is known to provide a good protection against hot corrosion and to cause surface failure such as rumpling and cracking due to difference in thermal expansion coefficient from the substrate metal and the lateral growth. Consequently, mechanical properties of the alumina TGO at the high temperature are the key parameters determining the integrity of TBC system. In this work, by using Fecralloy foils as the alumina forming substrate, creep tests and tensile tests have been performed with various TGO thicknesses$(h=0{\sim}4{\mu}m)$ and yttrium contents(0, 200ppm) at $1200^{\circ}C$. Displacement-time curves and load-displacement curves for each TGO thickness(h=1,2,..) were measured from the creep and tensile tests, respectively, and compared with the curves without TGO thickness(h=0). As the result, the intrinsic tensile and creep properties of TGO itself were determined.
The study of anneal characteristics is important for TL dosimeter to reuse. To obtain the annealing condition of the recently developed, new TL dosimeter, LiF:Mg,Cu,Na,Si Teflon Tills in a disk type (diameter 4.5 mm, thickness about $90mg/cm^2$), we studied for pre-irradiation annealing, readout procedure and post-readout annealing, in order. The gamma irradiations were carried out with a $^{60}Co$, dose of 0.1 Gy. We have used the method that observe the variation of thermoluminescent(TL) intensity of these Teflon TLDs over repeated cycles by changing both anneal temperature and anneal time with the TLD reader and the oven. There is a 5% loss in sensitivity over the ten repeated readouts by the annealing condition:pre-irradiation annealing at $80^{\circ}C$ for one hour, readout to $280^{\circ}C$ and post-readout annealing at $270^{\circ}C$ for 20 seconds.
