  • The purpose of this study is to examine the heath status and health behavior of middle-aged Korean men and women. Even though there has been increased concern about extremely high mortality rate of Korean middle-aged men and mental health problems of middle aged women, there is a dearth of empirical studies which examine the health status and health behavior of middle-aged men and women in Korea. This study attempts to fill these gaps. Data gathered from 1,667 men and women aged between 30-59 are analyzed to examine the level of physical health, mental health, perceived health and health behavior and to explore the gender and age group differences in these aspects. The results show that there exist gender difference and age group difference in health status: Women are less healthy than men and as age increased health status declined. Women at their 50s are least healthy and most unhappy suggesting age and gender interaction in health status. There exist a gender difference in health behavior: Men have regular check-ups more frequently than women and exercise more. These results are discussed in terms of the gender differences in the experiences, social roles and life styles over the life course.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the self image according to body mass index in middle school students. Methods: The study included 260 students. Self image was measured using structured questionnaires. Statistical analysis was performed using t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe's test and multiple regression analysis. Results: The proportions of under weight, normal weight, and overweight were 36.1%, 53.9%, 10.0% respectively. Also, the mean of the self image score was 4.0. The score of self image was significantly higher in the normal weight group than the over weight group or the under weight group. This trend was also consistent in multiple regression. The score of self image was lower in high school grades, low perceived record, under-weight and over-weight. Conclusion: This study shows that many students are under weight. The score of self image was related with body image. So, level of obesity in each student should also be considered, to elevate the self image.

  • This study examined the longitudinal changes of self-perceptions of own aging among middle-aged and elderly adults, using the latent growth modeling with the three waves of the "Aging and the Quality of Life of the Elderly in Korea", which sampled adults aged over 45 living in Seoul and Chuncheon. The dependent variable is attitudes toward own aging, the sub-scale of the Philadelphia Geriatric Center Morale Scale developed by Lawton (1975). The results showed that the research participants' attitudes of their own aging deteriorated over time. In addition, the lower initial status of the research participants' attitudes of their own aging was associated with being older, being non-married, living in rural areas, attaining the lower level of education, having the fewer social activities, reporting the worse subjective economic status, and reporting the worse subjective health status. The slope of the research participants' attitudes of their own aging differed by the residence areas, educational attainments, subjective economic status and subjective health status. In particular, the difference of the initial status by educational attainments grew over time. Social welfare policy and practice implications are discussed for middle-aged and elderly adults to improve attitudes toward their own aging.

  • PURPOSE: This study researched the effects of the changes of elbow joint angle and of arm position in PNF pattern on muscle activation of the contralateral shoulder muscles while performing PNF pattern exercise. METHODS: The research subjects were 16 male physical therapists who had no neuromuscular or neurological disorders. To measure the muscle activation of the contralateral shoulder muscles, EMG electrodes were attached to the muscle valley of the middle and posterior areas of the deltoid and triceps muscles of the arm. Muscle activation while performing the ulnar thrust PNF pattern exercise was measured with the elbow joint positioned at angles of $30^{\circ}$, $45^{\circ}$, and $60^{\circ}$. Resistance points were at the initial, middle, and end ranges of PNF pattern exercise. RESULTS: Muscle activation of the middle and posterior portions of the deltoid muscle increased significantly according to the changes of elbow joint angle. In each resistance point the middle range was significantly higher than at other points. A significant difference on muscle activation was demonstrated throughout each range depending on the type of muscle. Muscle activation of the middle and posterior portions of the deltoid muscle was higher than muscle activation of the triceps. CONCLUSION: The results of this study demonstrate that the PNF pattern exercising method used in this study is a selective exercising method focusing on the deltoid muscle over the triceps muscle. In order to increase the muscle strength to the maximum level, it is necessary to provide the maximum level of resistance in the middle range of the elbow joint.

  • This study was performed to show change of fat-free mass(FFM), representing mostly the muscle mass change, and muscle strength with increasing age, and relationship between dietary, exercise behaviors and FFM in healthy middle-and old aged women who are of age over 55 years. The FFM and correspondingly hand grip strength showed significant positive correlation with age. But concentration of serum albumin showed no significant relationship with age. The subjects were categorized into groups according to FFM tertile. The anthropometry such as weight, BMI, fat mass, circumferences of waist and hip, WHR, and hand grip strength decreased significantly in the lowest FFM group. But the albumin level showed no change according to FFM level. The FFM showed significant correlation with nutrient intakes such as energy, carbohydrate, protein, Fe, P, Ca. No association, however, was shown with exercise behavior probably because of no case with resistance exercise habits. The variance of FFM was explained 55.2% by height and carbohydrate intake. The variance of height-adjusted FFM could be explained only 16.2% by intake amount of carbohydrate. In conclusion, the decrease of FFM may cause to reduce muscle strength in female elderly. The increasing nutrient intakes were associated with the increased FFM and may protect from risk of sarcopenia. However, only the carbohydrate intake could influence independently the FFM in middle- and old-aged women. The FFM has no association with endurance exercise habits. • The mobile agent paradigm can be exploited in a variety of ways, ranging from low-level system administration tasks to middle ware to user-level applications. Mobile agents can be useful in building middle-ware services such as active mail systems, distributed collaboration systems, etc. An active mail message is a program that interacts with its recipient using a multimedia interface, and adapts the interaction session based on the recipient's responses. The mobile agent paradigm is well suitable to this type of application, since it can carry a sender-defined session protocol along with the multimedia message. Mobile agent communication is possible via method invocation on virtual references. Agents can make synchronous, one-way, or future-reply type invocations. Multicasting is possible, since agents can be aggregated hierarchically into groups. A simple check-pointing facility has also been implemented. Another proposed solution is to use multi agent computer systems to access, filter, evaluate, and integrate this information. We will present the overall architectural framework, our agent design commitments, and agent architecture to enable the above characteristics. Besides, the each information needed a mobile agent system such as text, graphic, image, audio and video etc, constructed a great capacity multimedia database system. However, they have problems in establishing connections over multiple subnetworks, such as no end-to-end connections, transmission delay due to ATM address resolution, no QoS protocols. We propose a new connection management scheme in the thesis to improve the connection management involved of mobile agent systems.

  • It is known that appropriate exercise changes body composition and improves coronary artery disease. This study was undertaken to evaluate the relationships between aerobic exercise, body composition, and the blood lipid levels in the middle-aged women(33 to 54 years old). The 57 subjects were divided into two groups based on their exercise: the aerobic exercise group(A group: 44) which performed at about $60\%$ of $VO_2max$ during over 6 months and the sedentary one(S group: 13). The percentages of body fat waist/hip ratio(WHR), body mass, and lean body mass of two groups were measured and compared in serum HDLC level and oxidized LDL level, the two most effective factors of coronary artery disease. The subjects in A group showed the lower percentages of body fat and WHR, when compared with the ones in S group. The body mass and lean body mass of A group subjects were higher than those of S group subjects. The serum HDL-C level$(58.6\pm12.7mg/mL)$ was significantly higher for A than S group subjects.(p<0.05) The sem ox-LDL level $(6.64\pm4.11Eu/mL)$ for A group subjects was lower than S group ones. The fat mass showed significantly positive correlations with atherogenic index(AI)(r=0.301, p<0.05), and with blood glucose levels(r=0.334, p<0.05). Also the WHR whowed significantly positive correlations with LDL-C levels(r=0.277, p<0.05), and with AI(r=0.466, p<0.01). In summary, the subjects in A group have the lower percentages of body fat and WHR, when compared with the ones in S group. Also, A group subject showed a tendency that exercise enhances serum HDL-C levels and decreases oxidized LDL levels. And aerobic exercise showed positive results which change body composition and improve blood lipid levels. There were significantly positive correlations among the percentages of body fat At and blood glucose level. These results suggest that moderately intensive exercise is a significant factor in reducing coronary artery disease.

  • This thesis has two objects: Firstly, the arrangement of basic data and formulating a system of experiment and practice in home economics and Secondly, the groping the way of improving the problems raised in the home economics education spot. A questinaire is used as the research tools for the fitness of content, of experiment and practice in the home economics and SPSS/PC(sup)+ and Scheffe Test are used for investigation. The results are as follows. 1. Students recognize the importance of experiment & practice more than the teacher. In the type of middle school teachers engaged in the girl’s middle school recognize the importance of experiment & practice more than those of coeducation middle school. 2. The percent of the school which executes over the 50% of experiment & practice in the contents of text book is 70%. The most numerous in the sphere of guiding is ‘seperate practice of student’. The reason of not executing the experiment & practice are ‘the concentration of the theory education’and ‘the lack of equipment and tools’3. Practice room for cooking was mostly established, but practice room of sewing was established only 5.6%. The contents of textbook for clothing sphere can be executed by using the equipment & tools of school only 9.2%. 4. 40% of the students feel that the content level of experiment & practice is difficult. Most of the students feel that the content level of experiment & practice, especially in the sphere of clothing, in unproper on the level fitness of contents by grade. 5. Most of the students assent on the positive effect for the degree and the most important cause for its not contributing to the everday life is the lack of experiment & practice in school. 6. Most of the students feels positively on the interest degree of content and the students who though much of the experment & practice feels positively on the interest degree of content.
