  • There are lots of controversies over the introduction of MVNO(Mobile Virtual Network Operator) policy to Korean mobile telecommunications market. MVNO is a kind of service-based competition in mobile market. This paper attempts to analyze the ripple effect of MVNO regulation and also desirable ways of implementing the policy. Based on Laffont, Rey and Tirole(1998), Armstrong (1998) model, theoretical MVNO model is defined and derived implications of price, quantity in the market. According to the model, the fact that MNOs have one-way access profit leads the static efficiency by lowering its market price. In regarding the most desirable way to enhance social welfare is revealed as 'two MNOs conduct MVNO' other than 'One MNO does' or 'Structurally divided network'.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the level of competition between Public Health Centers (PHCs) and private clinics (PCs) by examining the number of patients that used PHCs vs. PCs, estimating the total amount of revenue generated from outpatient services at both PHCs and PCs, thereby analyzing the financial impacts on PCs derived from the PHCs. We utilized 2011 National Inpatient Sample data (NIS). Using the 20 table containing general information on each individual claims, we integrate it with the 40 table which contains all the diagnostic codes for each claim. Then, we disaggregate the bundled claims into the original individual claims. Overall, 3.1% of outpatient visits are made at PHCs while the rest was made at the PCs (96.9%). Among the total claim costs of 6.34 billion USD (as of 2011), PHCs occupy 2.0% (124 million USD), and 98.0% are contributed to PCs (6.21 billion USD). The estimated economic losses of PCs due to PHCs are summarized as follow; the maximum potential loss is estimated at 198 million USD in total and 7,099 USD per clinic when we include all patient types; the minimum loss is estimated at 71 million USD in total and 2,540 USD per clinic where Medical Aid recipients and the elderly (aged 65 and over) are excluded. Our results confirm the potential economic effect on PCs due to PHCs providing outpatient services. PCs and PHCs are the most important players providing primary care in Korea. Unnecessary competition between PCs and PHCs is not desirable. Health authorities should carefully examine the healthcare services currently provided by PHCs and their impacts on PCs.

  • During our observations of changes in halophyte distribution in Hampyeong Bay over a period of five years, we found that the distribution area showed a maintenance for Phragmites communis community, a tendency of gradual increase for Zoysia sinica community, gradual decrease for Suaeda maritima community, and disappearance for Limonium tetragonum community during the studied period. The Phragmites communis community stably settled in areas adjacent to land and appeared not to be significantly affected by physical factors (such as tides and waves) or disturbances caused by biological factors (such as interspecific competition). Among studied species, germination time was shown to be the fastest for Suaeda maritima. In addition, this species showed certain characteristics that allowed it to settle primarily in new habitats formed by sand deposition as its growth was not halted under conditions with high amounts of sand and high organic matter content. However, in areas where Zoysia sinica and Suaeda maritima resided together, the area inhabited by Suaeda maritima gradually decreased due to interspecific competition between the two species. This was believed to be the result of a sharp decrease in the germination of Suaeda maritima since May, while the germination of Zoysia sinica was continuously maintained, indicating that the latter had an advantage in terms of seedling competition. In the case of the Limonium tetragonum community, its habitat was found to have been completely destroyed because it was covered by sand. The study area was confirmed to have undergone a large change in topography as tides and waves resulted in sand deposition onto these lands. Hampyeong Bay is considered to have experienced changes in halophyte distribution related to certain complex factors, such as changes in physical habitats and changes in biological factors such as interspecific competition.

  • The orientational cross-over phenomena in an RF sputtering growth of TiN films were studied in an in-situ, real-time synchrotron x-ray scattering experiment. For the films grown with pure Ar sputtering gas, the cross-over from the more strained (002)-oriented grains to the less strained (111)-oriented grains occurred as the film thickness was increased. As the sputtering power was increased, the cross-over thickness, at which the growth orientation changes from the <002> to the <111> direction, was decreased. The addition of $N_2$ besides Ar as sputtering gas suppressed the cross-over, and consequently resulted in the (002) preferred orientation without exhibiting the cross-over. We attribute the observed cross-over phenomena to the competition between the surface and the strain energy. The x-ray powder diffraction, the x-ray reflectivity, and the ex-situ AFM surface topology study consistently suggest that the microscopic growth front was in fact always the (002) planes. In the initial stage of growth, the (002) planes were aligned to the substrate surface to minimize the surface energy. At later stages, however, the (002) growth front tilted away from the surface by about $60^{\circ}$ to relax the strain, which caused the cross-over of the preferred growth direction to the <111> direction.

  • In order to assess the attractiveness of the hospital industry, the competitive environment of the industry was analyzed. With the employment of Michael Porter's five forces model' the deciding factor was examined and applied to evaluate the intensity of the competitiveness in the hospital industry, and then the structure and attractiveness in hospital industry was assessed. The subject of this study was hospitals that have over 500 beds. Main findings are as follows. 1. Out of 5 factors deciding competitiveness, the pressure from newly opened hospitals and the competition between existing hospitals, were both high in intensity; this makes hospital industry less attractive. The pressure from the substitutes and the pressure from the negotiating power of consumers and suppliers were low; this makes hospital industry more attractive. 2. Overall intensity of competitive pressure pressure for existing hospital industry that have over 500 beds was rather low, consequently the attractiveness of the industry was evaluated quite high. These findings, however, were not solid enough to endorse the attractiveness of the industry. 3. It was understood that future industry would have bigger pressure/ competition so that the attractiveness for the relevant hospital industry would be decreased. This study has its limitations. As the evaluation of competitive factor was not grounded on quantitative data, its objectivity could be questioned. Also, the overall result of each factors could be distorted as it was calculated with same weight against individual factor. This study has its significance in that the specific hospital group was viewed as one industry, and its attractiveness as a potentially profitable industry in which worth investing was estimated, with all factors considered. With this key result, hospitals industustry could work out a plan to enhance the status of hospitals, allowing hospitals to get assistance in making strategic decisions such as mergers, cooperations, and new establishments.

  • Interspecific competition between E. colona and rice was determined over four growth stages in replacement series. No competition between the two species as measured by plant height, leaf area and dry weight occurred by 30 days after seeding (DAS) at all the density combinations studied. At 45 DAS reductions in leaf area and dry weight of E. colons due to the competition occurred at the density combinations where number of competing E. colons plant was less than that of rice. However, there was a great increase in leaf area and dry weight of E. colons at the density combination of one E. colons competing with four rice plants at 60 DAS. As the number of E. colons plants increased, the leaf area and dry weight of E. colona decreased resulting from intraspecific competition between E. colons plants. Although rice absorbed more nitrogen than E. colons up to 30 DAS, the reverse was observed from 45 DAS. A relatively small amount of phosphorous was absorbed by both rice and E. colons, but the amount of phosphorous taken up by E. colons was greater than that taken up by rice. E. colons absorbed extremely high amount of potassium when compared to rice.

  • This study was conducted to analyze the industrial concentration of the districts, cities and counties among clinics, dental clinics, and Oriental clinics. For this purpose, the sales from 1996 to 2015 in five-year intervals were analyzed by the Heifindal-Hirschmann index (HHI). The results of this study showed that the competition index represented by the HHI tended to intensify as a whole. Especially in the county area, HHI tended to be in comparison with other regions, but decreased with statistically significance. On average, the HHI was higher in the county than in the district and city areas. In the case of the clinic, the HHI of the county area tended to decrease. In the case of the dental clinic, the HHI tended to decrease in the city and county, while in the Oriental clinic the HHI tended to decrease in the district, city and county. Overall, monopolies were present in the county, but competition strengthened over time. In the case of clinics, competition is intensifying in country. area. In the case of dental clinics, competition in the city and country areas has not yet reached saturation. In the case of Oriental clinics, competition in all regions has not yet been saturated, and competition in the distinct market has been most intense.

  • Despite competing strategical interests over Southeast Asia that have emerged in the last decade, with the launch of wide scope geopolitical strategies Chinese and Japanese initiatives have been characterized by a certain degree of implicit coordination, particularly in offering support to the Myanmar state's territorializing strategies for economic development. The case of the Thilawa Special Economic Zones (SEZ) is exemplary, as it was a Japan-led project which became a model and benchmark example for similar development initiatives supported by the People's Republic of China.

  • As the gaps become narrower in interconnection fee and volume rate, the MNOs began to introduce flat pricing for unlimited voice traffic competitively in Korea wireless telecommunication market : 'unlimited talks within intra-network' by the 1st operator, followed by the 3rd operator's 'unlimited talks over all networks'. As a result, subscribers tip in toward the third ranked operator and could bring a substantial change to steadfast market structure over the last decade in Korea. This paper aims to develop a simple economic model to analyze competition with flat pricing for unlimited voice traffic, and to check whether the pricing can be appropriate for the MNOs. The results show that MNOs already step in the necessary conditions to launch flat pricing for voice traffic. It also predicts that the MNOs compete with unlimited talk over all networks and set a single fee in an equilibrium. At present, the MNOs run virtually identical pricing for unlimited talk over all networks, considering their differentiation with respect to service quality, coverage and brand preference.
