  • We propose an outsole measurement/inspection system to improve the quality of the shoe product. It uses the Divide-and-Conquer technique to measure the length of shoes'outsole. First, it detects edge positions of outsole's toe and heel from each image frame using an unique scale block we defined and calculates the outsole's length as the distance of two edge positions. Then it compensates the total length of outsole using the side image of outsole. Next, it classifies the outsole as inferior goods if the measurement error is bigger than 5.8mm. As a result of testing with the various kinds of outsoles, it was shown that the 95% accuracy was acquired within 1mm allowable error range. In conclusion, the proposed inspection system is effective and useful in the measurement/inspection process of shoe product and any material object as well.

  • One of the major factors affecting maneuverability of an athlete is frictional force caused at an outsole of his shoe. The magnitude of the frictional force is closely related to pattern and hardness of outsole and roughness of ground or floor. This study then focuses on the effect of outsole pattern of sports shoes on the frictional force. After surveying outsole patterns of sports shoes in markets, we select 4 types of outsole patterns, such as straight, W, O, and wave as primary outsole patterns of sports shoe and we also select depth, pitch and slope as design parameters of each pattern. Corresponding to those patterns and design parameters, various outsole specimen are prepared for frictional experiments. After performing frictional tests with those specimen, coefficients of friction(COF) are collected and analyzed with a statistical tool to draw useful conclusion.

  • A 2-dimensional scanner have been generally used for an office, but 3-dimensional one was seldom used in industry. A footwear bonding process has been operated manually by the skilled operators, but it is needed to be operated automatically. So we developed an automatic outsole profile scanner, which consists of PC, CCD camera, laser beam diode and moving mechanism, to scan automatically the 3-dimensional profile of outsole inner face to be bonded. Here the developed algorithm makes 2D image into 3D outsole profile. This profile will be used enough to bond automatically the outsole to something like leather or clothes.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare biomechanical factors on badminton shoes between anti-slip outsole and non anti-slip outsole. Six subjects participated in this experiment. For three-dimensional analysis, eight cameras (Oqus 3series, Qualisys) were used to acquire raw data, and then the parameters were calculated and analyzed with Visual-3D. In conclusion, the patterns of spent time during side step, and maximum velocities of CoGs were consistent without joint angles of lower extremities in spite of small differences. Those of GRFs, and moment of lower extremities were absolutely consistent. This trend of biomechanical factors was that Y shoe (ante-treatment) was much greater and PS shoe (treatment) was greater than Y shoe (treatment). (That was, Y shoe (ante-treatment) > PS shoe (treatment) >Y shoe (treatment)). The findings of this study showed that anti-slip outsole was effective and brought increasing performance and decreasing injuries. It is suggested that further study of these phenomena will help understand many aspects of human locomotion, including work, performance, fatigue and possible injuries.

  • This paper presents the analyzing method of golf shoes and shows design technique including air-cycled pump in the midsole. The golf shoes are analyzed by using the finite element method for the optimization in design by considering the configuration of midsole and outsole, which compose the golf shoes. Also the optimum size of air-cycled pump in the midsole is examined. Standard human pressure values for boundary conditions are adoped for the finite element analysis. The unknown constants of the strain energy function of Ogden type are observed in accordance with the axial tension test. By using the commercial FEM software for nonlinear analysis, MARC V7.3, the strains and the values of volume change for midsole and outsole are obtained, respectively. As a result, it can be concluded that these values in the midsole and the outsole are different depending on the characteristic of elastomer. More precise investigation about the assembly of two parts, which represent midsole and outsole, is under studying.

  • The outsole mold of the shoes has been manufactured using electro-discharge machining by graphite electrode or using casting etc. The study is concerned with the pattern design for the outsole of shoes by CAD, the modeling and the generation of NC data by CAM system and the machining by CNC machining center. The ball end mill and the engraving cutter is used as cutter and the cutting conditions are adjusted according to the shapes and sizes of the cutter and part in cutting. The method showed the possibility coping with the rapid change of shoes industry and proposed the possibility for higher productivity and quality on mold-manufacturing of shoes outsole.

  • This paper presented an experimental study of slip resistance characteristics of shoes and floor surface contact with special focus on the effect of surface roughness, outsole material and mechanical abrasion. The factors that affected the results of slip resistances were investigated for four kinds of rubbers and five kinds of floor samples using the VIT(English XL) tribometer. The slip resistance was observed to increase gradually with increasing roughness for five kinds of floor roughness. In the higher surface roughness (larger than $11.5{\mu}m$), the slip resistance increased more rapidly and exceeded safety criteria at $22.60{\mu}m$. The slip resistance was observed to decrease with increasing hardness of outsole, except for butylenes rubber, which seemed to show the material property. The slip resistance decreased with number of trials. In the first several times(5 or 6 trial), the slip resistance decreased more rapidly, whereafter it approached gradually constant value. The slip resistance of surfaces has generally been shown to increase with floor surface roughness and to decrease with hardness of outsole and number of trials under the wet condition.

  • We need a lot of manpower and we can cut down a labor cost by applying industrial robots the footwear bonding automation process. In this study, we suggest how to program off-line robot path along a shoe's outsole shape in the footwear bonding process by 5-axis microscribe system like robot arms. This microscribe system development consists 5-axis microscribe mechanics, signal processing circuit, and PC with software. It is the system for making database of a shoe's outsole through the movement of a microscribe with many joints. To do this, first read 5-encoders' pulse values while a robot arm points a shoe's outsole shape from the initial status. Then, calculate a relative shoe's outsole by Denavit-Hatenberg's (D-H) direct Kinematics of known length of links and coordinate values. Next, calculate the encoders' pulse values of the robot arm's rotation and transmitting the angle pulse values to the PC through a circuit. Finally, it is able to display a shoe's outsole at real-time by computing the Denvavit-Hantenberg's (D-H) direct kinematics in the PC. With the coordinate values calculated above, we can draw a bonding gauge-line on the upper. Also, we can make off-line robot path programming compute a shoe's bonding area on the upper. These results will be effectively applied for programming a robot path on off-line and automatically.

  • In this study, to develop a flash-less die for forming of shoe-outsole, experiments and forming analysis were carried out. In order to reduce the extra-materials, of feet method and mass distribution method are used in the preform design. To improve the accuracy of contact surface of dies, the contact status of dies are measured by using the pressure film. The vertical pressing die structure and the guide-gutter system have been developed for the discharge of extra-materials and re-pressing. By the investigation, flash of shoe-outsole was considerably reduced.

In order to reduce the extra-materials, offset method and mass distribution method are used in the preform design. The vertical mold structure pressing the preform was introduced to produce a flash-less shoe-sole. To measure the contact status of parting surface of mold, the pressure film has been used.
