Purpose: This study was done to identify factors predicting sick-role behavioral compliance in hemodialysis patients. Methods: The subjects were 133 patients from outpatient dialysis clinics at seven major general hospitals located in D and P cities. Data were collected by self-report questionnaires. For data analysis, SPSS/WIN 14.0 program was utilized including one-way ANOVA, independent t-test, Pearson correlation coefficients, and stepwise multiple regression. Results: This study showed a positive correlation between sick-role behavioral compliance and social support (r=.29 p<.001), knowledge (r=.31 p<.001), self-efficacy (r=.52, p<.001) and age (r=.21, p=.015). The factors predicting sick-role behavioral compliance were self-efficacy (${\beta}$=.46), knowledge (${\beta}$=.25), and age (${\beta}$=.18). These factors accounted for 36% of the variance of sick-role behavioral compliance in hemodialysis patients. Conclusion: The results indicate that it is necessary to increase self-efficacy and knowledge in order to improve sick-role behavioral compliance in hemodialysis patients.
This study identified the actual conditions for safe anticancer drug management among nurses and the relationship between level of awareness and performance of anticancer drug safety regulations in terms of preparation, administration, and disposal. The respondents were 236 nurses working with chemotherapy in wards and outpatient clinics in five hospitals in and near Seoul. Safety regulations provided for the anticancer drug the Occupational Safety Health Administration (OSHA, 1999), as modified for an earlier study, were used. The results showed that the level of awareness and performance on the anticancer drug safety regulations indicate their preparation ($3.38{\pm}0.55$, $2.38{\pm}0.98$), administration ($3.52{\pm}0.46$, $3.17{\pm}0.70$), general handling and disposal ($3.33{\pm}0.54$, $2.42{\pm}0.90$) on a scale 0 to 5. Also, there were significant differences in job positions, work experience, type of preparation, and continuing education and a positive relationship between the level of awareness and nursing performance. Thus, nurses should receive continuing education on the handling of anticancer drugs to improve the level of performance following safety regulations.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess the characteristics of the user of complementary alternative therapies(CAT) and to identify the important predictive factors associated with them. Method: This study included 142 patients attending outpatient rheumatology clinics of D Hospital in Busan between July and August in 2001. The multiple logistic regression model was developed to estimate the likelihood of user or nonuser of CAT. Result: The duration of illness and chance score of health locus of control were found to be significant factors through the estimated coefficients of using CAT. Duration of illness is longer and chance score of health locus of control is higher in patients who have used CAT in past than that of nonuser. When the model performance was evaluated by comparing the observed outcome with predicted outcome, the model correctly identified 95% of user of CAT and 31% of nonuser. Conclusion: In this survey, duration of illness and chance score of health locus of control are found to be significant factors in predicting utilization of CAT. Nurses who care for rheumatoid arthritis patients should take consideration into health locus of control in planning health education programs.

This study was carried out survey to compare using status of physical therapy for elderly persons between urban and rural area in Honam. There were 16 places consisting of general clinics, departments of family medicine, pain medicine, and orthopedics that run outpatient physical therapy. This study distributed 636 questionnaires in total and collected 400 responses. Regionally, 200 responses out of 311 questionnaires from Gwangju and 200 responses out of 325 questionnaires from Jeollanam-do and Jeollabuk-do were collected. Regionally speaking, Gwangju was 62% while Jeollanam-do and Jeollabuk-do regions were 88%, indicating patients in rural areas employed more public transportation, which was statistically significantly different. There was a difference between urban and rural areas with regard to questions regarding improvement with physical therapy. Factors related to the number of physical therapy visits per week that showed a significant difference between urban and rural areas found by the linear regression analysis result were working hours, whether the patient exercised or not, and pain stress. This result suggest that it is necessary to reduce working hours and pain stress experienced by rural elderlies as well as to encourage regular exercise via national polices.
Purpose: This study was done to provide fundamental data for developing a depression prediction model by discovering main factors that affect depression in patients who do maintenance hemodialysis. Method: The subjects were 191 patients doing maintenance hemodialysis selected from outpatient dialysis clinics at 9 major general hospitals, The Instrument tools utilized in this study were adapted from depression, fatigue, sleep disturbance, stress, adaptation, symptoms, daily activities, and role limitation and thoroughly modified to verify reliability and validity. The collected data was analyzed with a SPSS-PC 11.0 Window Statistics Program for real numbers, percentage, average, standard deviation, and multiple regression. Results: The correlation factor for depression was (M=2.54) fatigue(M=3.12), sleep disturbance (M=2.82), stress(M=3.04), adaptation(M=2.53), daily activities(M=2.24), symptoms(M=2.37), and role limitation(M=2.24). The strongest factor that affected depression was explained by symptoms of the patients who performed hemodialysis. The analysis of the factors that affected depression revealed a $58.4\%$ prediction in symptoms, stress, role limitation, and adaptation. Conclusion: It has been confirmed that the regression equation model(Depression=7.351 + .266$^{\ast}$symptoms + .260$^{\ast}$stress -.l89$^{\ast}$adaptation + .057$^{\ast}$fatigue) of this research may serve as a prediction factor for depression in Hemodialysis Patients.
This study was conducted to identify the characteristics of uncertainty in patients having rheumatoid arthritis. Subjects of the study constituted 528 patients who visited outpatient clinics of two university hospitals and one general hospital in Seoul. A self report questionnaire was used to measure the uncertainty. Reliability coefficients of this instrument was found Cronbach's ${\alpha}=.84$. In data analysis, SPSS PC 6.0 computer program was utilized for descriptive statistics and factor analysis. Three factors were appointed on the basis of literature review for the principal component factor analysis method and Varimax Orthogonal Rotation. The results of factor analysis were as follows ; 1) Three factors for uncertainty were identified through the principal component analysis and varimax rotation, and these contributed 37.4% of the valiance in the total score. Twenty six items among the whole items in the scale loaded above .39 on one of 3 factors. 2) The naming of each factor was as follows : Factor 1 was 'ambiguity' and has 12 items, factor 2 was 'lack of information' and has 8 items, factor 3 was 'unpredictability' and has 7 items. 3) Cronbach's alpha for internal consistency was .84 for the total items and .81, .80, .50 for each of three subscales in that order.
This study was conducted to investigate the influencing factors on the appraisal of uncertainty in patients having rheumatoid arthritis. Subjects of the study constituted 528 patients who visited outpatient clinics of two university hospitals and one general hospital in Seoul. Self report questionnaires were used to measure the variables influencing the appraisal of uncertainty. Reliability coefficients of these instruments were found Cronbach's Alpha=$.70{\sim}.96$. In data analysis, SPSS PC 6.0 program was utilized for descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation, logistic and multiple regression analysis. The results of logistic and multiple regression analysis were as follows 1) Among the independent variables, significant factors to explain the appraisal of uncertainty in patients were uncertainty(p<.001), severity of illness(p<.05), educational level (p<.05) and age (p<.05). 2) When patients appraised uncertainty as "Danger", significant factors to explain the appraisal of uncertainty were uncertainty(p<.0001), age(p<.0005), severity of illness(p<.001), educational level (p<.05). 3) When patients appraised uncertainty as "Opportunity", significant factors to predict the appraisal of uncertainty were uncertainty(p<.0005), social support(p<.0005), severity of illness(p<.005), credible authority(p<.05), age(p<.05) and educational level (p<.05).
Purpose: This study was to find out the relationships between helplessness and health behavior of patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Method: The subjects were 293 rheumatoid arthritis patients who visit 2 rheumatology outpatient clinics in G city. Data were collected by questionnaires including Arthritis helplessness index(Nicassio, Wallston, Callahan, Herbert, & Pincus, 1985)and health behavior assessment scale(Jo, Oh & Choe, 2000). The data were analyzed with Pearson correlation coefficient, t-test, ANOVA and Duncan's multiple range test. Results: The majority of the subjects were women and the mean age was 50.4years. The mean duration of illness was 8.9years. There were negative correlations between the degree of helplessness and the degree of health behavior. The degree of helplessness was significantly high in those who were older, female, less educated, out of workforce, and those who had no chances to attend any arthritis-related classes. The degree of health behavior was significantly low in those who were older, high school graduate, in higher economic status, married, and those who had chances to attend arthritis-related classes. Conclusion: To reduce the helplessness of rheumatoid arthritis patients, the nursing intervention which is to increase the health behavior should be developed and provided to the rheumatoid arthritis patients.
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to examine differences in nutrient intake and food consumption by the presence of metabolic syndrome in Korean adults. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Study subjects in this cross-sectional study were recruited from four outpatient clinics in and near the Seoul metropolitan area of South Korea between 2006 and 2012. A total of 668 subjects (413 men and 255 women) aged ${\geq}30y$ were included in the final data analyses. For each subject, daily nutrient intake and food consumption were calculated using three days of dietary intake data obtained from a combination of 24-hour recalls and dietary records. To evaluate food consumption, mean number of servings consumed per day and percentages of recommended number of servings for six food groups were calculated. Metabolic syndrome was defined using the National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III criteria. The general linear model was performed to examine differences in nutrient intake and food consumption by sex and the presence of metabolic syndrome after adjustment for potential confounding variables. RESULTS: Nutrient intake did not differ by the presence of metabolic syndrome in both men and women. Men with metabolic syndrome had lower consumption and percentage of the recommendation for fruits compared with those without metabolic syndrome (1.6 vs. 1.1 servings/day, P-value = 0.001; 63.5 vs. 49.5%, P-value = 0.013). Women with metabolic syndrome showed lower consumption and percentage of the recommendation for dairy foods than those without metabolic syndrome (0.8 vs. 0.5 servings/day, P-value = 0.001; 78.6 vs. 48.9%, P-value = 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Low intakes of fruits and dairy foods might be associated with the risk of having metabolic syndrome among Korean adults. Dietary advice on increasing consumption of these foods is needed to prevent and attenuate the risk of metabolic syndrome.

The purpose of the study is exploring the relationship among patient perceived quality of dental care, satisfaction, and royalty in dental clinics and hospitals. The observation of the study is outpatient visiting dental clinics and hospitals located in Seoul and Kyung-Gi Do area, and surveyed the outpatients. The contents of the survey are consisted with questions including quality of care perceived by the patients, costumer satisfaction, and royalty, and measurement for each question is using five point Likert scale. According to result of bi-variate analysis, there was the significant relationship among specialized care, value of the care, and kindness in quality of dental services, level of care in dentists significantly influenced on costumer satisfaction and costumer royalty, and there was the significant relationship between costumer satisfaction and royalty. According to result of regression analysis on the costumer satisfaction, the costumer satisfaction positively related with the convenience of facility, specialized care, value of care, patient age, number of visit, and spend time for treatment, and housewives and self-employees were likely to satisfy on care than regular employees. By result of full regression model and reduced model on costumer royalty, satisfaction could explain 86% on the costumer royalty such as re-visit and promoting other people, and increase of explain power is not significant when other independent variables joined model (full model). Considering efficiency of model, costumer royalty could be explained by satisfaction only rather than other independent variables used. Finally, This study shows that the social-demographic variables of patient influenced the patient satisfaction, and the patient satisfaction influenced patient royalty directly.
