CONCEPTUAL FUEL CHANNEL DESIGNS FOR CANDU-SCWR

  • This paper presents two of the fuel channel designs being considered for the CANDU-SCWR, a pressure-tube type supercritical water cooled reactor. The first is an insulated pressure tube design. The pressure tube is thermally insulated from the hot coolant by a porous ceramic insulator. Each pressure tube is in direct contact with the moderator, which operates at an average temperature of about $80^{\circ}C$. The low temperature allows zirconium alloys to be used. A perforated metal liner protects the insulator from being damaged by the fuel bundles and erosion by the coolant. The coolant pressure is transmitted through the perforated metal liner and insulator and applied directly to the pressure tube. The second is a re-entrant design. The fuel channel consists of two concentric tubes, and a calandria tube that separates them from the moderator. The coolant enters between the annulus of the two concentric fuel channel tubes, then exits the fuel channel through the inner tube, where the fuel bundles reside. The outer tube bears the coolant pressure and its temperature will be the same as the coolant inlet temperature, ${\sim}350^{\circ}C$. Advantages and disadvantages of these designs and the material requirements are discussed.

Natural Convection Heat Transfer from a Horizontal Heat Exchanger Tube with a Fin (單一핀을 가진 水平管에서의 自然對流 熱傳達)

  • An numerical and experimental study has been performed on natural convection heat transfer from a horizontal heat exchanger tube with a fin. At s bare tube, by increasing $C_{T}$ (tube conduction parameter), mean Nusselt number and outer wall temperature are apparently increased at $C_{T}$.leq.300, slightly increased at $C_{T}$>300 and they can be represented in an exponential function of $C_{T}$. Natural convection heat transfer characteristics for the tube with a fin at given Rayleigh number are well agreed by those for an isothermal cylinder at a modified Rayleigh number. The local fin Nusselt number of the tube with a downward fin is much higher than that of the tube with an upward fin. The comparisons between numerical and experimental results showed good agreement.reement.

An Experimental Study on the Energy Separation in the Geometric Setup of a Low Pressure Vortex Tube (저압용 vertex tube의 기하학적형상에 따른 에너지 분리특성에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • The process of energy separation in a low Pressure vortex tube with compressed air as a work-ing medium is studied in detail. Experimental data of the temperature of the cold and hot air leaving the vortex tube are presented. The variation of the maximum wall temperature along the inner surface of the vortex tube and the temperature distribution in a vortex tube provide useful information about the location of the stagnation point of the flow field at the axis of the vortex tube. Analysis of the results enabled to find the optimum length of the vortex tube, the optimum shape of the Throttle and the usefulness of the Sleeve. In this study Outer tube is used for the exhaust application. The hot gas flow is turned 180$^{\circ}$and passes the out-side of the vortex tube a second time heating it. From this geometric setup of a vortex tube He effects of energy separation and the prediction of the ignition of Diesel Soot is presented by experimental data.

Thermal Stress Estimation due to Temperature Difference in the Wall Thickness for Thinned Feedwater Heater Tube (감육된 급수가열기 튜브의 두께 방향 온도차이에 의해 발생하는 열응력 평가)

  • A major stress determining the remaining life of the tube in feedwater heater of fossil fuel power plant is hoop stress by the internal pressure. However, thermal stress due to temperature difference across the wall thickness also contributed to reduce the remaining life of the tube. Therefore, thermal loading must be considered even though the contribution of internal pressure loading to the stresses of the tube was known to be much higher than that of the thermal loading. In this study, thermal stress of the tubes in the de-superheating zone was estimated, which was generated due to the temperature difference across the tube thickness. Analytic equations were shown for determining the hoop stress and the radial stress of the tube with uniform thinning and for the temperature across the tube thickness. Accuracy and effectiveness of the analytic equations for the stresses were verified by comparing the results obtained by the analytic equations with those obtained from finite element analysis. Using finite element analysis, the stresses for eccentric thinning were also determined. The effect of heat transfer coefficient on thermal stress was investigated using series of finite element analyses with various values of heat transfer coefficient for both inner and outer surface of the tube. It was shown that the effect of heat transfer coefficient at outer surface was larger than that of heat transfer coefficient at inner surface on the thermal stress of the tube. Also, the hoop stress was larger than the radial stress for both cases of uniformly and eccentrically thinned tubes when the thermal loading was only considered without internal pressure loading.

  • A numerical study has been performed to obtain the air-side flow and heat transfer characteristics for a two-row lanced finned tube heat exchanger with 7 mm tube outer diameter. The increases of dimensionless local heat flux at the leading edge of slit and bottom surface of the fin were noticed. The temperature of air at downstream of the 2nd row of the lanced fin becomes more uniform than that of the plain fin because the mixing of energy increases by the slit and the side-slit. As the inlet velocity increases, the contribution of the 1st row to heat transfer decreases and that of 2nd row increases.

  • In this paper, the pulsed mode operated gas discharge tube is composed with mixed gas of Hg-Ne (10 Torr), in the tube of 15.0 mm outer diameter and has variable color from red to blue with changing frequency high voltage. As increasing frequency in the gas discharge tube, the phenomena, that the electron temperature in the positive column increases and the radiation from atoms of higher upper state energy levels increases, exist The color have the locus from red (0.4972, 0.3128) to blue (0.2736, 0.2619) in CIE chromacity diagram with increasing frequency. The method of changing frequency has been shown to be suitable for the luminous color control.

  • An irradiation test of a nuclear fuel rod having external and internal tube structure was planned for a performance. To establish fabrication process satisfying the requirements of irradiation test, micro-TIG welding system for fuel rods was developed, and preliminary welding experiments for optimizing process conditions of fuel rod was performed. Fuel rods with 15.9mm diameter and 0.57mm wall thickness of cladding tubes and end caps have been used and optimum conditions of endcap welding have been selected. In this experiment, the qualification test was performed by tensile tests, helium leak inspections, and metallography examinations to qualify the endcap welding procedure. The soundness of the welds quality of a dual cooled fuel rods has been confirmed by mechanical tests and microstructural examinations.

The Pressure Drop Characteristics in Small Diameter Tubes Using HCFC Alternative Refrigerants (세관내 HCFC계 대체냉매의 압력강하에 관한 연구)

  • The pressure drop characteristics of R-22 and R-410A(a mixture of 50wt% R-32 and 50wt% R-125) flowing in a small diameter tube with 1.77[mm] inner diameter and 3.14[mm] outer diameter was investigated experimentally. the mass fluxes of refrigerants are ranged from 450 to $1050[kg/(m^2{\cdot}s)]$ and the qualites are varied from 0.05 to 0.95. The main experimental results were summarized as follows; The single-phase liquid friction factors for small diameter tubes are higher than those predicted by the Blasius equation. In case of two-phase flow, the pressure gradient of the small diameter tube increases with increasing mass velocity and vapor quality. The experimental data are not well correlated by predictions which were proposed for the large diameter tube.

Failure Behavior of Piercing Plug during Seamless Tube Manufacturing Process (심리스 튜브 제조공정 시 피어싱 플러그의 파손거동)

  • In this study, failure behavior of piercing plug for seamless tube manufacturing process was studied. Three different kinds of passed piercing plugs (10, 90, 215 times) were prepared. The shape deformation of the passed piercing plugs was observed by 3D coordinate measuring machine, and the oxidized layer on the surface of piercing plug was observed by optical microscopy. The length reduction of piercing plug presented at 215 times passed plug. It was found that the oxidized layer consisted of outer scale, inner scale and internal oxidation layers, and the inner scale layer had vertical cracks, and interfaces had horizontal cracks. We proposed the failure mechanism of piercing plug during seamless tube manufacturing process based on the formation of vertical and horizontal crack.

  • Heat transfer and pressure drop for single phase flow of water in circular smooth and micro-fin tubes are measured. Copper tubes of 9.52 and 7mm outer diameter were used. The internal roughness in micro-fin tubes was formed by spiral grooves having $25^{\circ}$ helx angle, 0. 12mm fin height and 0.454mm pitch in 9.52mm tubes; $18^{\circ}$ helix angle, 0.15mm fin height and 0.322mm pitch in 7mm tubes. The measured friction factor and heat transfer coefficient are compared with relevant previous works, and the correlations for micro-fin tube are developed.
