Structural Characteristic of Beam-to-Column Connections in Rectangular CFT Structures Considering Concrete Filling (충전성을 개선한 각형CFT 기둥-보 접합부의 구조 특성)

  • CFT structures require a diaphragm to prevent buckling of steel at connections. An outer diaphragm has better concrete filling than a through diaphragm due to a large bore, but due to the larger size than the through diaphragm, it has poorer constructability and cooperation with building equipment. The building structure has a floor slab that was unified with the upper diaphragm, so the outer diaphragm was placed at the upper bound. Moreover, the through diaphragmwas placed at the lower connection to avoid obstruction of the building equipment. The CFT structure with the improved concrete filling showed the same structural behavior as the CFT structure with the use of the same type of diaphragms at the upper and lower connections.

  • A concrete-filled tube is a concrete-filled steel tube structure. The steel tube confines the concrete to increase the compressive strength, and the concrete contains the buckling of the tube. CFT structures require a diaphragm to prevent buckling of steel at connections. An outer diaphragm has better concrete filling than a through diaphragm due to a large bore, but being larger than the through diagram, it has poorer constructability and cooperation with building equipment. In this study, a CFT structure that uses different types of diaphragms in its upper and lower connections to improve the concrete filling was tested and analyzed via the FEM program. The building structure had a floor slab that was unified with the upper diaphragm, so the outer diaphragm was placed at the upper bound. Moreover, the through diaphragm was placed at the lower connection to avoid obstruction from building equipment. The CFT structure with the improved concrete filling showed the same structural behavior as the CFT structure with the use of the same type of diaphragms at the upper and lower connections.

  • A mathematical model was proposed to analyze the vibration of diaphragm, such as the contact lenses fitted on the eyes, being subjected to the external sinusoidal pressure. The model incorporates the differential equations and their numerical solution program, based on the wave equations. Turbo-C and graphic software, formulated to describe the dependence of the various parameters involved in the vibration. The model predicts the radial distribution of amplitude, frequency dependence of both average displacement amplitude and the power of diaphragm whose edge is being either simply supported or rigidly clamped in vibration. The effect of variables such as thickness, radius, damping coefficients on the vibration characteristics was illustrated by the computer simulation of the derived program. As the frequency of driving pressure increases above the certain value determined by the boundary conditions and parameters the wave shape or pattern changes from simple arc to belly or loops having double antinode. It seems that the effect of outer antinode progressively increases as the frequency increases. If this kind of phenomena occurs to the contact lens on the cornea in vivo, it may cause an abnormal correction power in the lenses or pull off the eye due the increased rise of outer part of the lens.

  • Micro-speaker diaphragms play an important role in generating a desired audio response. The diaphragm is generally a circular membrane, and the cross section is a double dome, with an inner dome and an outer dome. To improve the sound quality of the speaker, a number of corrugations may be included in the outer dome region. In this study, the role of these corrugations is investigated using two kinds of finite element method (FEM) calculations. Structural FEM modeling was carried out to investigate the change in stiffness of the diaphragm when the corrugations were included. Modal FEM modeling was then carried out to compare the natural frequencies and the resulting vibrational modes of the plain and corrugated diaphragms. The effects of the corrugations on the vibration characteristics of the diaphragm are discussed.

  • A study is carried out to evaluate the stresses for steel box girder support diaphragm using finite elements method. This study includes the stress characteristic compared with experimental method for diaphragm design. The results from the finite elements method are compare with the results from experimental investigations and shown to give good agreement. The shear stresses were generally uniformed in the outer plane. increased rapidly above the bearing. The horizontal direct stresses were generally low except in the vicinity of the bearing and opening comer where a local increase in compressive stresses occured.

  • As the miniature load cells have small inner space and sensing elements of which are thin and very sensitive to manufacturing conditions, it is very difficult to predict the rated outputs and control them by using the compensation resistor. The very useful equation has been derived for calculation of theoretical rated outputs for diaphragm type miniature load cells when commercial diaphragm strain gages are used. Four diaphragm type miniature load cells of which capacities are from 300 N to 1, 000 N and outer diameters are 20 mm and 26.5 mm are manufactured. The differences between calculating results and actural ones are less than 5%. According to numerical analysis the decrease of rated outputs caused to main error is examined in existence of loading button.

  • This study focuses on the development of a new method of H-shaped beam-to-square column connection with an outer diaphragm and a field welding. The specific type of beam-to-column connection with an external stiffener, using field welding, is proposed. The structural behavior of this connection was examined experimentally. Two loading type tests were conducted under the experimental parameters given as details. First described was the symmetrical loading test, which supported both ends or a beam simply and applied a load from the column to the pend (What does this mean?) to investigate a fundamental characteristic of this connection. Further described was the anti-symmetrical loading test, which carried out simple support of the column'stop end and the column base, and applied a load from both ends of a beam to investigate the structural performance of this connection. From the results, it is clear that the external- stiffener-type connection proposed in this paper is the reliable connection method.

  • A bellows diaphragm design program for mechanical seal was developed in this study. This program was written in AutoLISP on the AutoCAD system with a personal computer. Basic design concept used in this program is composition of a convolution that is tangent to two lines and five circles from given design parameters(initial radius, inner and outer diameter, thickness, pitch, etc.). The effects of altering some design parameters on stress distribution of bellows were estimated using commercial FEM code, NISAII. As a result, the bellows diaphragm for mechanical seal was successfully designed by the program. The FEM result shows that stress is dependent on straight line length and bellows diameter with same span.

  • The development of a next-generation hydrogen compressor, a key component in the expansion of hydrogen charging infrastructure, is in progress. In order to improve compression efficiency and durability, it is important to optimize the precision forming and shearing processes of the diaphragm, which is the bellows unit cell, as well as the optimization of diaphragm shape itself. In this study, we aim to show that die and process design technology that can synchronize the inner and outer shearing points of the diaphragm for the precision forming of product can be constructed based on a numerical simulation. First, the damage model that can predict the fracture points will be determined using the shear load and shear zone measurements obtained by performing a blanking test of AISI-633 stainless steel. Next, we will explain the overall procedure based on numerical analysis model how to determine the shearing points according to the deformation pattern of urethane die for various shearing die design.

  • Recently, micro-speakers have attracted much attention due to their increasing demand in mobile devices. Micro-speakers use polymer diaphragms, which are manufactured from thin polymer film by the thermoforming process. The diaphragm is generally designed to be a circular membrane with a cross section consisting of a double dome structure, and a number of corrugations are located in the outer region to produce better sound quality. In the current study, a finite element (FE) analysis is performed for thermoforming, and the resulting thickness reduction in the corrugation regions is estimated. The estimated thickness distribution is used in further structural and modal FE analyses, from which the effects of local thickness reduction on the stiffness and vibration characteristics are determined.
