The purpose of this study was designed to test and develope the structural model that explains health promoting behaviors among college students in Korea. The hypothetical model was constructed on the Pender's Health promotion Model(l996) and the inclusion of some influential factors for life satisfaction. The conceptual framework was built around eight constructs. Exogenous variables included in the model were self-esteem, perceived health status, self-efficacy, internal locus of control, chance locus of control. powerful other locus of control. Endogenous variables were health promotion behaviors and life satisfaction. The results are as follows; 1. The overall fit of the hypothetical model to the data was moderate <$x^2$=4.18(df=11. p=0.041), GFI= 0.99, AGFI= 0.76, RMR= 0.019, CFI= 0.99, CN= 248.50> 2. Path and variable of the model were modified by considering both its theoretical implication and statistical significance of parameter estimates. Compared to the hypothetical model. the revised model has become parsimonious and had a better fit to the data expected in a chi-square value <$x^2$=8.43( df= 16, p=0.21), GFI= 0.99, AGFI= 0.92., RMR= 0.024, CFI= 0.99, CN= 312.01> 3. Some of the predictive factors. especially self efficacy. self esteem. powerful others locus of control. perceived health status revealed the direct effects on health promoting behaviors. Of these variables. self-efficacy was the most signigicant factor. These predictive variables of health promoting behaviors explained 59% of total variances in the model. 4. Health promoting behaviors, self-esteem. and perceived health status revealed direct effect on the life satisfaction. Self-efficacy was identified as an important variable that contributed indirectly to improve life satisfaction by enhancing health promoting behaviors. These predictive variables of life satisfaction explained 42% of total variances in the model. In conclusion. the derived model in this study is considered appropriate in explaining and predicting health promoting models and life satisfaction among college students in Korea and could effectively be used as a reference model for further studies by suggesting a direction in health promoting nursing practices.
Objectives: This study was conducted to investigate the experience and perception among adult women regarding weight control and the consumption of weight-control foods or health functional foods based on their body mass index (BMI). Methods: The subjects were 634 adult women from the Chungcheong province, Korea, and data were collected through a self-administered questionnaire from July 2021 through September 2021. The subjects were divided into four groups based on their BMI status: underweight (< 18.5 kg/m2, 7.6%), normal weight (18.5 ~ 22.9 kg/m2, 53.3%), overweight (23 ~ 24.9 kg/m2, 19.7%), and obese (≥ 25 kg/m2, 19.4%). Results: Over the past 3 years, almost two-thirds (68.6%) of the adult women had tried weight control measures, despite the fact that a significant proportion of them were normal or underweight. More importantly, 57.6% of subjects reported the consumption of weight-control foods, with a lower proportion in the underweight (35.4%) group compared to the normal (56.2%), overweight (62.4%), and obese (65.0%) groups. The food items used for weight control were mostly salads, chicken breasts, low fat (soy) milk, slimming tea, protein shakes, low-calorie cereals, and energy/protein bars among others. In addition, one-third (31.1%) of the subjects reported the use of health functional foods containing ingredients for fat reduction. A significantly higher proportion of these was from the overweight (36.0%) and obese (38.2%) groups compared to the underweight (20.8%) and normal weight (28.1%) groups. Products containing Garcinia cambogia extract, green tea, or Cissus extract, were popular among users. Subjects who were obese had a poorer perception of their health and body. Most subjects felt the need for correct information regarding weight control, but this number was significantly more in the higher BMI groups. Conclusions: Our results suggest that the use of weight-control foods or health functional foods is popular among adult women, especially those who are obese. Thus, nutrition education courses covering facts about weight control and practice need to be developed and provided based on the BMI status of subjects.
The prevalence of helminthic infections was surveyed on a total of 6,178 residents (males 2,549 and females 3,629) in 102 villages of 9 provinces in Lao PDR between 2007 and 2011 under the project of Korea-Laos Collaborative Project for Control of Foodborne Trematode Infections in Lao PDR. Fecal specimens were collected and examined by the Kato-Katz thick smear and Stoll's egg counting techniques. The overall liver/intestinal helminth egg positive rate was 71.9% with a single or mixed infections with Opisthorchis viverrini and minute intestinal flukes (Ov/MIF), Ascaris lumbricoides, hookworms, Trichuris trichiura, Trichostrongylus sp., echinostomes, Taenia spp., and others. Ov/MIF revealed the highest prevalence (55.6%) followed by hookworms (27.8%) and T. trichiura (6.5%). The endemic regions with the highest prevalence of Ov/MIF were Savannakhet, Khammouane, Vientiane (Nam Ngum), Champasak (Khong Island), and Saravane Province. High prevalences of A. lumbricoides (33.8%), hookworms (47.8%), and T. trichiura (32.6%) were observed in Phongsaly, Luang Prabang, and Vientiane (Nam Ngum) areas, respectively. The results of this study highlight helminth parasites of current public health significance in different areas of Lao PDR.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop a multicultural education program for nursing students and to examine its effects on multicultural sensitivity and efficacy. Methods: A research design for this study was a non-equivalent control group, non-synchronized pre-post test. The experimental group (n=34) participated in a 13-week multicultural education program while the control group (n=35) attended regular classes having no relation with multiculture for the same period as that of the experimental group. Multicultural sensitivity and efficacy were measured before and after the program. Data were collected using self-administered questionnaires and analyzed using the PASW 18.0 program. Results: Total scores for multicultural sensitivity and efficacy were significantly increased in the experimental group compared with the control group after the program. The subcategories of multicultural sensitivity; 'respect for cultural differences', 'interaction enjoyment' and multicultural efficacy; 'general functions', 'considering multicultural families' were increased respectively, whereas others were not changed. Conclusion: Based on these results, it can be suggested that a 13-week multicultural education program is effective for improving nursing students' level of multicultural sensitivity and efficacy.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of structured nursing intervention for caregivers on maintenance of intravenous (IV) infusions in infants. Methods: The structured nursing intervention was developed through the processes of interviews with nurses from pediatric wards. To identify the effects of the developed nursing intervention, a non-synchronized non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest design study was conducted with caregivers from the pediatric ward from a hospital in Seoul. Of 100 admitted infants, 50 caregivers were assigned to the intervention group and received the structured nursing intervention for maintenance of intravenous infusions in infants. The others were assigned control group and received routine care. Data were collected on patient factors, IV insertion factors, treatments, and IV related complications. The form developed for the structured nursing intervention was used by staff nurses. Results: Compared to the control group, IV insertion frequency in experimental group infants was significantly lower and IV related complications decreased (p<.05). Conclusion: These results suggest that the structured nursing intervention for caregivers on maintenance of intravenous infusions may have effects on maintenance of intravenous infusions in infants, and decreasing IV related complications. This nursing intervention can be used to improve IV related problems of admitted infants.
With increasing of GDP, the registration number of passenger cars has exceeded 20 million last year in Korea. Especially, the registration number of the diesel engine vehicles has been increasing. However, the WHO(World Health Organization) IARC (International Agency for Research on Cancer) has reported that diesel engine exhaust gas is an one of HAPs, which has carcinogenic for human, and they have designated it to Group 1. To solve this problem, exhaust gas from diesel engines has to be controlled. Thus, it has been controlling by European regulatory standard in Korea. On the other hand, in order to meet the enhanced emission regulations, all manufacturing company applied $NO_x$ control device to vehicles such as EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation), SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) and so on. However, these devices (EGR, SCR) were operated by difference reaction mechanism respectively, and the composition of exhaust gas would be differenced from that of them. In this study, it was conducted to evaluate variety characteristics on changing of exhaust gas composition by each $NO_x$ control device, and the heavy duty diesel trucks were chosen as experimental vehicles. From the result, it revealed that vehicles (with EGR) were discharged higher THC as 52.5% than that of others (with SCR). However, it did not followed that trend, in the case of CO; it was discharged as 57.2% lower than that of others (with SCR). In the future, these data would be used to apply to efficient $NO_x$ control device for meeting to EURO 6.
The aim of this study was to investigate intake of health foods and supplements and its associated factors in middle and old-aged adults in order to contribute to health promotion of Korean population by providing a guide for proper use of health foods and supplements. About 69% of the subjects reported that they were currently taking health foods and supplements or had experiences of having them in the past, whereas 31.2 % reported they had never taken them. The most commonly used type of health foods and supplements was vitamin C as reported by 41.8% followed by others such as lactobacillus products, multi-vitamins, tonic medicine and cardiotonic drug, artificially processed Ginseng foods, vitamin B complex, enzyme supplement, calcium, aloe, apricot extract products, chitosan products, loyal honey, squalene, refined fish oil and iron products. The major reason for taking health foods and supplements was 'to protect the weak constitution' with 155 (42.1%) responses, and the motive for the intake was the suggestion from family-relatives with 235 (63.9%) responses, and the place of purchase was pharmacy with 140 (38.0%) responses, the average monthly expense was 20,000-40,000 won with 140 (26.2%) responses, and effects after the intake was 'so and so' with 180 (33.6%) responses as the highest. More health foods and supplements were consumed as age and education were statistically significantly increased (p<0.05). For health and lifestyle and the intake of health foods and supplements, perceived health status, the presence of illness, and the presence of health management were statistically significant (p<0.05). Male subjects than female subjects and the 30s than the 405 and 50s were appeared to have poorer dietary behaviors (p<0.05). For the health locus of control and the intake of health foods and supplements, the health locus of control score was 22.82 for consumers and 22.79 for non-consumers, showing no significant difference. Logistic regression analysis was performed to find out major factors that affect the intake of health foods and supplements, in which gender, education, smoking, perceived health status, the presence of illness, and health management were significant to the intake of health foods and supplements. It is shown that subjects with perception and attitude of 'health foods and supplements are useful in health maintenance and disease prevention' and 'the information and variety for health foods and supplements are great' have higher probability of taking health foods and supplements.
For the world as a whole, many of the trends in health are towards improvement, especially in terms of increasing life expectancy and decreasing infant mortality. By the year 2000 we expect some diseases such as poliomyelitis to be eradicated, and others, such as leprosy, measles and iodine deficiency disorders, to have been brought under virtually complete control. For this country, the situation will probably soon be like that of the OECD-countries, with a life expectancy for both men and women of over 75 years, 12% or more of the population in the age group of 65 and over, and 75% of the population living in cities. Once those levels have been reached, however, change becomes much more gradual. In this paper I will mention some of the health benefits we now enjoy as a result of rapid development, as well as some of the new problems we now face. I will then attempt to show how health promotion is a response to this new situation and how it can be used in some particular dimensions of modem life. (omitted)
Objectives : The objectives of this study were to investigate the handwashing and practice of health science college students and emphasize the importance of handwashing and infection control precaution to the students. Methods : This study was conducted by 586 health science college students through self-reported survey. All data were analyzed using SPSS/PC 13.0 program. Results : 1. Female students washed hands more frequently(7 times per day) than male students(6 times per day). Female students washed hands for 39 seconds in the meanwhile male students washed hands for 28 seconds. 2. Handwashing after using toilet accounted for 79.6% and 72.0% in female and male students, respectively. 3. Most of the handwashing was performed with faucet water (82.1%). The others were tepid water (54.3%), running water (98.1%) and water with soap bar (66.7%). 4. The reason for not practicing handwashing was due to annoyingness (36.3%). Conclusions : Health science college students' tended to wash their hands frequently. However, there existed a gap between the handwashing perception and practice in the previous reports because the observed practice was different from self-estimated perception.
The purpose of this study was to investigate health status and health promoting behaviors of female elderly, and their needs for health-related services in an urban-rural combined city. The data were collected from the subjects registered in senior welfare center and senior citizens' clubs. A total of 119 women were participated in the survey. The results of the study are as follows; 1. The subjects perceived their health status relatively unhealthy. Their health promotion behavior score was 10.82 (range 0-17), and more than $60\%$ of them performed well in smoking and drinking control, regular meal. taking breakfast, and maintaining good relationship with others. 2. The most needed service was health screening followed by health risk assessment, disease diagnosis and treatment. 3. The most demanded education was on dementia prevention, followed by exercise, balanced diet, and maintenance of memorial and mental capability. 4. As the health interest and the health responsibility increased, the need for health service increased as well. Likewise, the health education needs increased as the health interest, health responsibility, and health promotion behavior increased. The results show that the health promotion programs for female elderly need to be focused, primarily, on health screening, health risk assessment, medical services for disease diagnosis and treatment, and health consulting and education. And health consulting and education programs should be designed to promote health interest and health responsibility of female elderly, change positively their attitude to aging, and include education on dementia prevention, exercise and nutrition management. Recommendations are discussed.
