  • The European corn borer, Ostrinia nubilalis (Hubner) has been known as only one species of genus Ostrinia in Korea. After Mutuura and Munroe(1970) revised the genus Ostrinia, the name of the corn stem borer in Korea has been very confused. The critical examination of the external morphology and the genitalia revealed that species of the genus Ostrinia occurring in Korea are O. fyrbacakus (Guenee, O. scapulalis (Walker), O. zaguliaevi Mut. & Mun. and O. zealis (Guenee)

  • Adult emergence period, the calling behavior pattern and the mating ability of female depending on ages, 9day old male's response to sex pheromone released from each 1- to 5-day old female, and the structure and location of sex pheromone gland were obse~edin Ostrinia furnacalis. Adults usually emerged from 1 hour before to 1-2 hours after the beg~nning of scatophase under the 16L/8D photoperiod. And most active calling behavior was obserued for two hours from the 5th to 7th hours of scotophase among 2- and 3-day old females, and 3-day old male' response to 3-day old females was higher than to any other age of females during the 5th-8th hours of scotophase. Mating frequency was higher at the 4th-7th hours after the beginning of scotophase. Among 1. to Cday old females extruding sex pheromone gland, more than 65% of them successfully mated with 2- to 4-day old males. And, 2- or 3-day old females exhuding sex pheromone gland showed an abdiw. over 60%, to mate with each 1--5-day old males. Hypertrophied cell layers, presumed to be a sex pheromone gland of female adults, were located at two intersegmental membranes between the 8th & 9th, and the 9th & 10th abdominal segments.

  • Background: Previous studies have shown the insecticidal efficacy of ginsenosides. In the present study, we aimed to investigate the metabolic mechanism related to the inhibitory effect of panaxadiol saponins (PDSs) against the Asian corn borer Ostrinia furnacalis (Guenee). Methods: Third instar larvae of O. furnacalis were fed normal diets with different concentrations of PDSs for 4 days. The consumption index, relative growth rate, approximate digestibility, and conversion of ingested and digested food were recorded. A targeted gas chromatographye-mass spectrometry assay was performed to detect the profiles of amino acids, fatty acids, and carbohydrates in larvae of O. furnacalis. In addition, the activity of detoxification-related enzymes was determined. Results and Conclusions: PDSs decreased the consumption index, relative growth rate, approximate digestibility, and conversion of ingested and digested food in the 3rd instar larvae of O. furnacalis in a dose-dependent manner. PDSs decreased 15 free amino acids, 16 free fatty acids, and 5 carbohydrates and increased the levels of palmitoleic acid, palmitic acid, and 9-octadecenoic acid in the 3rd instar larvae. The activity of detoxification-related enzymes, such as acetylcholinesterase, glutathione S-transferase, cytochrome P450, carboxylesterase, trehalase, acid phosphatase, and alkaline phosphatase, was reduced in a dose-dependent manner in the 3rd instar larvae exposed to PDSs. These data confirmed the inhibitory effect of PDSs against growth, food utilization, and detoxification in the 3rd instar larvae of O. furnacalis and the potential for using PDSs as an efficient tool for insect pest management for O. furnacalis larvae.

  • Parasitism of the egg parasitoid, Trichogramma evanescens, to its main host insect, the Asian corn borer, Ostrinia furnacalis in Korea was compared with that of T. ostriniae that is the dominant species in China on the same host insect. Parasitoid adults of both species emerged more than 50 percent within 4 hours after lights-on in 16L/8D photo period regime and showed a circadian rhythm of emergence. The developmental period from oviposition to emergence in both parasitoids was ca. 11 days and there were no significant differences between the two species and between female and male of each species, either. Both species also showed superparasitism even when the parasitic rates in one egg mass were below 100 percent. Both species oviposited by 5 days after emergence, and maximum longevities of each female adult of both species were 8 day for T. evanescens and 6 day for T. ostriniae. The total number of eggs parasitized by T. evanescens was ca. 38 eggs and ca. 31 eggs by T. ostriniae. Newly emerged female parasitoid laid eggs on about $50\%$ of the host insect egg mass, and the parasitism decreased with the adult age of egg parasitoids in both species. The sex ratio of two species was female-biased about $80\%$.

  • This experiment was carried out to develop an artificial diet and a mass rearing system, which is essentIal in the pheromone research for Ostrmia furnacalis. Component deletion and addit.ion methods were applied t.o define the nut.ritional Importance of some components, especially yeast, Wesson's salt mixture and vitamin complex. Secondly we have developed a proper rearmg syst.em for O. furnacalis. and also tried to find out the factors affecting rapid sclerotization (dark-canning) of pupae. AddItion of yeast raIsed the pupal weight. and pupation rate. However Wesson's salt mixture got the female pupae lighter. Vitamin complex as a substitue for yeast showed a good survivahty in an early larval stage buL pupal weight was lower than that of the individuals reared on the yeast dIet. Also corrugated cardboard was found to be very good for pupation. And the rate of dark~tannmg in pupae was higher as the period of larval development was shorter.

  • This study was carried out to select the effective insecticides for control of Ostrinia furnacalis(Guenee) in Yonchon, northern part of Kyunggi province, where is main producing region of adlay in Korea. The Asian corn borer in adlay field had three generations a year. The first stage of adult activity was higher from late May to middle June, the second from late July to early August and the third late September. Based on difference in control value, the relative ranks of some insecticides were lambda cyhalothrin EC > cartap hydrochloride GR > carbaryl EC. In control value by different application timing of Lambda cyhalothrin EC, yields were significantly different, that is, twice applications on second generation showed the control value of $90.6%{\sim}93.5%$. Unhulled grain yield on Lambda cyhalothrin EC treated plot on second generation was higher than that in untreatred plot by 82%.

  • Background: The lepidopteran Asiatic corn borer (ACB), Ostrinia furnacalis (Guenee), has caused huge economic losses throughout the Asian-Western Pacific region. Usually, chemical pesticides are used for the control, but excessive use of pesticides has caused great harm. Therefore, the inartificial ecotypic pesticides to ACB are extremely essential. In our previous study, we found that panaxadiol saponins (PDS) can effectively reduce the harm of ACB by causing antifeedant activity. Therefore, it is necessary to reveal the biological molecular changes in ACB and the functionary mechanism of PDS. Methods: We analyzed the global transcription of ACB with different PDS concentration treatment (5 mg/mL, 10 mg/mL, and 25 mg/mL) by high-throughput sequencing and de novo transcriptome assembly method. Results: PDS treatment could cause the changes of many gene expressions which regulate its signal pathways. The genes in peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR) signaling pathway were significantly downregulated, and then, the downstream fatty acid degradation pathway had also been greatly affected. Conclusion: Through this experiment, we hypothesized that the occurrence of antifeedant action of ACB is because the PDS brought about the downregulation of FATP and FABP, the key regulators in the PPAR, and the downregulation of FATP and FABP exerts further effects on the expression of SCD-1, ACBP, LPL, SCP-X, and ACO, which leads to the disorder of PPAR signaling pathway and the fatty acid degradation pathway. Not only that, PDS treatment leads to enzyme activity decrease by inhibiting the expression of genes associated with catalytic activity, such as cytochrome P450 and other similar genes.

  • This study was carried out to screen the occurrence of insect pest on the organic seed producing field of minor grain germplasms, Pearl millet (Setaria italic L.), Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.), and Common millet (Panicum miliaceum L.) in Gangwon-do from 2008 to 2009. The artificial pheromone traps successfully attracted an Oriental corn borer, Ostrinia furnacalis (Guenee) on Pearl millet, but the Army worm, Pseudaletia separata, was not attracted in all of the minor grain fields. The ratio of damaged plants of Oriental corn borer and Army worm were appeared in order with Pearl millet, Common millet, and Sorghum. The morphological diversities of plant bug were shown as four kinds of species, Eastern green stinkbug (Nezara antennata), Brown-marmorated stinkbug (Halyomorpha halys), Sloe bug (Dolycoris baccarum), and Bean bug (Riptortus clavatus), on the organic seed producing field of minor grain. The average occurrence density of Eastern green stinkbug was the highest level in the three kind of minor grains, Pearl millet, Common millet, and Sorghum in 2008 and 2009. The dominant species are the Eastern green stinkbug and the Bean bug in Pearl millet and Common millet. The Sloe bug and the Bean bug possessed the highest population density in Sorghum.
