In order to evaluate the adaptability of Aardi goats to arid environment, 5 Aardi bucks were deprived of water for four days during spring and summer seasons. The rise in average maximum ambient temperature from $24.8^{\circ}C$ in spring to $35.8^{\circ}C$ in summer caused a significant rise in rectal temperature ($0.3^{\circ}C$), respiratory rate (62%), serum osmolaity (8%) and serum sodium concentration (17%). While, it resulted in a significant decline in dry matter intake (50%), urine volume (74%) and fecal water excretion (60%) compared with their values in spring, but had no significant effect on the volume of drinking water. At the end of the 4-days deprivation period during spring, respiratory rate, dry matter intake and urine volume were reduced by 18, 77 and 91% relative to their average in control goats. The corresponding reduction in summer were 58, 100 and 100%. Serum osmolaity was risen by 15% in spring deprived goats and 29% in summer deprived goats. Rectal temperature rose by a mean value of $1.3^{\circ}C$ only in goats deprived of water in summer. Percent of moisture in the feces declined from 64 in control goats, to 24% in water deprived goats during spring season. The corresponding values in summer were 25 and 6%. These responses of Aardi goats deprived of water in summer indicate that they possess a water economy mechanism enable them to tolerate infrequent drinking in hot-arid environment.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to identify the effect of low sodium dialysate (LSD) rather than conventional dialysate on interdialytic weight gain (IWG), blood pressure (BP), and intradialytic side-effects (ISEs) in patients on maintenance hemodialysis (HD). Methods: The study was performed in 43 patients, who were treated in the university hospital over 8 weeks. Each participant's serum sodium set point was measured using dialysate sodium 140 mEq/L during the first 4 weeks. For the next 4 weeks dialysate sodium concentrate (134,136,and138 mEq/L) was provided to each participant but only to an experimental group (EG) (n=22) based on the individual set point, although 140 mEq/L dialysate was given to all of the control group (CG) (n=21). Consequently, outcomes including IWG, BP, and ISE were evaluated. Results: In EG, difference of pre-HD SBP (p=.047) and post-HD serum sodium (p=.006) were significantly decreased compared to CG. Also, ISEs was not more frequent in EG. However, the differences were not statistically significant, IWG (kg & %), pre-HD DBP, post-HD SBP & DBP, and serum osmolality in EG. Conclusion: Individual application of LSD in patients on maintenance hemodialysis is beneficial to decrease pre-HD SBP and post-HD serum sodium without increasing ISE. Therefore, LSD can be better treatment than conventional dialysate.

The physiological role of brain somatostatin in the central regulation of feed intake in sheep was investigated through a continuous intracerebroventricular (ICV) infusion of somatostastin 1-28 (SRIF) at a small dose of $5{\mu}g/0.2ml/hr$ for 98.5 hours from day 1 to day 5. Sheep (n=5) were fed for 2 hours once a day, and water and 0.5 M NaCI solution were given ad libitum. Feed, water and salt intake were measured during ICV infusion of artificial cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and SRIF. The feed intake during SRIF infusion on days 2 to 5 increased significantly compared to that during CSF infusion. Water intake, when compared to that during CSF infusion, only increased significantly on day 4. NaCI intake during SRIF infusion was not different from that during CSF infusion. Mean arterial blood pressure (MAP) and heart rate during SRIF infusion were not different from those during CSF infusion. The plasma concentrations of Na, K, Cl, osmolality and total protein during SRIF infusion were also not different from those values during CSF infusion. There are two possible mechanisms, that is, the suppression of brain SRIF on feed suppressing hormones and the direct actions on brain mechanisms controlling feed intake, explaining how SRIF works in the brain to bring about increases in feed intake in sheep fed on hay. The results indicate that brain SRIF increases feed intake in sheep fed on hay.
Objective : The present study was carried out to determine if Juglandis Semen Aquacupuncture(JSA) exerts beneficial effect against the urine concentrating defect induced by glycerol injection in rabbits. Methods : In order to test the effect of JSA, rabbits were acupunctured with $0.5m{\ell}$ of 1%JSA for 7days at both sides of $Sh{\grave{e}}ns{\bar{u}}$(BL23) before the glycerol injection. The other animals were pretreated with an equal volume of saline instead of JSA. Results : The urine flow was reduced, but the urine osmolality was significantly lower than the basal period in glycerol-injected animals, indicating that glycerol causes the urine concentrating defect. The fractional excretion of Na and K was increased in glycerol-treated animals. The Free-water clearance and fractional water excretion(V/GFR) were increased in animals treated with glycerol. Conclusion : These results indicate that glycerol injection resulted an impairment in the urine concentrating ability in rabbits. Such changes were prevented by JSA. JSA may be used as a method to treat and prevent glycerol-induced acute renal failure.
It is well recognized that conventional coronary artery bypass grafting (ONCAB) often leads to major organ dysfunction including renal injury. Diabetes mellitus is a major cause of nephropathy and poor clinical outcomes. The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the occurrence of adverse outcomes including renal impairment between diabetic (n=75, DM group) and non-diabetic patients (n=72, Non-DM group) underwent off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting surgery (OPCAB). Fasting glucose, hemoglobin A1c, fructosamine, fibrinogen and serum osmolality levels in the DM group were higher than those of the Non-DM group at pre-operative (Pre-OP) period ($P$ <0.05). History of hypertension and renal impairment in the DM group was higher than that of the Non-DM group ($P$ <0.05). Potassium ($K^+$), blood urea nitrogen and creatinine levels were higher, whereas sodium ($Na^+$) and glomerular filtration rate (GFR) levels were lower in the DM group than the Non-DM group at peri-operative period ($P$ <0.05). Fasting glucose levels at Pre-OP period had positive correlations with blood urea nitrogen and creatinine levels at peri-operative period, but negative correlations with GFR levels at peri-operative period in the DM group ($P$ <0.05). Incidences of renal impairment, diuretic therapy or continuous renal replacement therapy and fever in the DM group were higher than those of the Non-DM group at post-operative period ($P$ <0.05). These results suggest that blood glucose level should be tightly controlled at peri-operative period to avoid renal dysfunction in diabetic patients.

The present study examined the effects of water extract of Hwangruynhaedoktang plus Yukmijihwangtang add Chogudeung (HYC) on the blood pressure and renal function in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR). The HYC water extract blocked increase of systolic blood pressure (SBP) in SHR. The urinary volume (UV), sodium (UNaV), potassium (UkV), and chloride (UclV) excretions were significantly increased in SHR administered with high dose of water extract of HYC, but urinary osmolality was not changed. The creatinine clearance (Ccr), which is index of glomerular filtration rate (GFR), was increased by administration of HYC, while solute-free water reabsorption (TcH2O) was not changed. Taken together, these results suggest that the depressor effects of HYC, at least in part, caused by diuretic effect due to increase of glomerular filtration rate.

The present study was designed to examine whether water extract of Acanthopanacis cortex(AC) has an effect on renal functional parameters in association with the expression of aquaporin 2 (AQP-2) and heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) in the ischemia/reperfusion induced acute renal failure (ARF) rats. Polyuria caused by down-regulation of renal AQP 2 in the ischemia-induced ARF rats was markedly restored by administration of AC (200 mg/kg, p.o.) with restoring expression of AQP 2 in the kidney. Administration of AC lowered the renal expression of HO-1, which was upregulated in rats with ischemia/reperfusion-induced ARF. The renal functional parameters including creatinine clearance, urinary sodium excretion, urinary osmolality, and solute-free reabsorption were also markedly restored in ischemia-ARF rats by administration of AC. Histological study also showed that renal damages in the ARF rats were abrogated by administration of AC. Taken together, the present data indicate that AC ameliorates renal defects in rats with ischemia/reperfusion-induced ARF.
The present study designed to investigate whether hwangryunhaedok-tang show an anti-hypertensive effect and elucidate its possible mechanism in spontaneously hypertensive rats. The systolic blood pressures (SBP) were significantly decreased as an oral administration of hwangryunhaedok-tang compared with their control group. The urine volume was significantly increased by administration of hwangryunhaedok-tang but urinary sodium (UNaV), potassium (UKV), chloride excretion (UCIV) were not remarkably affected. The urinary creatinine excretion rate (UcrV) was significantly increased in rats administered with hwangryunhaedok-tang in association with increase of creatinine clearance (Ccr). The urine osmolality (Uosmol) was significantly decreased in SHR administered with hwangryunhaedok-tang without being changed in solute-free water reabsorption ( TcH20). The expressions of Aquaporin 2 (AQP-2). 3 and ${\alpha}\;1$, ${\beta}\;1$ subunits of Na.K-ATPase were determined by Western blot analysis to assess the role of these proteins in association with changes of renal functions in SHR administered with hwangryunhaedok-tang. The expression of AQP-2 and 3 protein was significantly down-regulated in the kidney of SHR administered with hwangryunhaedok-tang compared with those in control rats without being altered expression of ${\alpha}\;1$, ${\beta}\;1$ subunits of Na,K-ATPase. In the in vitro assay, Angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) was inhibited by hwangryunhaedok-tang in a dose-dependent manner. Berberine and/or palmatine, which are well known as a main components of hwangryunhaedok-tang, also have an ACE inhibitory effects in a dose-dependent manner. Taken together, these results suggest that hwangryunhaedok-tang lowered blood pressure through the increase of diuresis caused by down-regulation of water channels and the inhibition of Angiotensin converting enzyme.
This study was conducted to examine the hematological factors in cultured olive flounder Paralichthys olivaceus depending on its growth stage and season. The study also aims at developing the standard hematological indicator for growth stage and season by examining total 16 parameters including whole blood (hematocrit, red blood cell and hemoglobin), biochemical (glucose, cholesterol, total protein, AST, ALT, $Na^+,\;K^+,\;Cl^-,\;Ca^{2+},\;Mg^{2+}$ and osmolarity), and endocrine (cortisol and $T_3$) factors in plasma of cultured olive flounder. The result showed a growth stage-dependent increase of $T_3$ level in olive flounder while the level of cholesterol showed an inverse correlation to fish size. For seasonal fluctuation in cultured olive flounder of the same growth stage, the highest level of Ht and RBC was observed in autumn.
An animal-component-free and chemically defined fed-batch process for GS-engineered cell lines producing recombinant antibodies has been developed. The fed-batch process relied on supplying sufficient nutrients to match their consumption, simultaneously minimizing the accumulation of by-products (lactate and osmolality). The proportionalities of nutritional consumption were determined by direct analysis. The robust, metabolically responsive feeding strategy was based on the offline measurement of glucose. The fed-batch process was shown to perform equivalently in GS-CHO and GS-NS0 cultures. Compared with batch cultures, the fed-batch technology generated the greater increase in cell yields (5-fold) and final antibody concentrations (4-8-fold). The majority of the increase in final antibody concentration was a function of the increased cell density and the prolonged culture time. This generic and high-yielding fed-batch process would shorten development time, and ensure process stability, thereby facilitating the manufacture of therapeutic antibodies by GS-engineered cell lines.
