  • In the previous work, we performed the analysis of a tubular type moving-magnet linear oscillatory actuator (LOA) with cylindrical Halbach array by using 2-d analytical formulas and confirmed validity of analytical results by comparison of those with both finite element (FE) computation and experimental results. This paper deals with the dynamic characteristic analysis of the moving-magnet LOA with cylindrical Halbach array. Control parameters such as the thrust constant, the back-emf constant, resistance and inductance are obtained from both analytical and experimental results. And then, the dynamic simulation algorithm is established by the state and output equation obtained from voltage and motion equation. Finally, for various values of frequency, the dynamic simulation and experimental results for the characteristics of the voltage, current and displacement of moving-magnet LOA are presented. The simulation results are validated extensively by experiments. The experimental and simulation results for the variation of stroke according to control voltage are also presented for various values of frequency.

  • This paper investigates the longitudinal flight dynamics and stability of flapping-wing micro air vehicles. Periodic external forces and moments due to the flapping motion characterize the dynamics of this system as NLTP (Non Linear Time Periodic). However, the averaging theorem can be applied to an NLTP system to obtain an NLTI (Non Linear Time Invariant) system which allows us to use a standard eigen value analysis to assess the stability of the system with linearization around a reference point. In this paper, we investigate the dynamics and stability of a hawkmoth-scale flapping-wing air vehicle by establishing an LTI (Linear Time Invariant) system model around a hovering condition. Also, a direct time integration of full nonlinear equations of motion of the flapping-wing micro air vehicle is conducted to see how the longitudinal flight dynamics appear in the time domain beyond the reference point, i.e. hovering condition. In the study, the flapping-wing air vehicle exhibited three distinct dynamic modes of motion in the longitudinal plane of motion: two stable subsidence modes and one unstable oscillatory mode. The unstable oscillatory mode is found to be a combination of a pitching velocity state and a forward/backward velocity state.

  • The SWATH concept hull form which is capable of high speed navigation with small oscillatory motions in waves, was developed from the catamaran type hull forms. This paper describes how the motion of a SWATH ship in irregular waves can be reduced by regulating the stabilizing fins. The optimal regulator and LQG (Linear Quadratic Gaussian) controller for vertical plane motion have been applied for both platforming mode and contouring mode controls. The calculations of hydrodynamic coefficients and external forces are possible for defining the system equation for the design purpose of motion control. Performances of the controlled system are compared with those of original system.

  • The structure of the variable liquid column oscillator(VLCO) is analogous to that of the tuned liquide column damper used to suppress oscillatory motion in large structures like tall buildings and cargo ships. VLCO is the technology to absorb high potential energy made by process of accelerated motions to occur the effect of an air spring by installation of inner air chamber. So, the application of VLCO can obtain to improve efficiency of energy than wave energy converters made in Pelamis Company. In this research, the experiments were carried out for the motion characteristics of simple floating body by varying the amount of internal fluid. The experimental results were compared with the calculated results.

  • In general, a yawing motion concept is used for the lateral control of one wheel robot where the gimbal system is located horizontally. In this paper, another concept of the vertically located gimbal system is presented for the same purpose. Although the vertical concept undergoes an instability more easily than the horizontal one, the pitching motion of the gyroscopic effect is considered. Firstly, the trade-off relation between two balancing concepts are investigated by comparing the gyroscopic mechanism. Secondly, the dynamic model for the problem of the proposed concept is derived using the oscillatory inverted stick model. Thirdly, the stability of the model is analyzed using the phase trajectory method. Finally, the control performance of the system by a vibration controller is simulated.

  • Vortex lock-on or resonance behind a circular cylinder is visualized using a time-resolved PW when a single frequency oscillation is superimposed on the mean incident velocity. For vector processing, a cross-correlation algorithm in conjunction with a recursive correlation and interrogation window shifting techniques is used. Measurements are made of the Karmas and streamwise vertices in the wake-transition regime at Reynolds lumber 360. When lock-on occurs, the vortex shedding frequency is found to be half the oscillation frequency as expected from previous experiments. At the lock-on state, the Karman vortices are observed to be more disordered by the increased strength and spanwise wavelength of the streamwiee vortices, which lead? to a strong three-dimensional motion.

  • The dynamic behaviors of counterflow non-premixed flame have been investigated experimentally to study effects of heat losses and Lewis number on edge flame oscillation, which result from the advancing and retreating edge flame motion of outer flame edge at low strain rate flame. For low strain rate flame, lateral conduction heat loss in addition to radiation heat loss could be more remarkable than the others. Oscillatory instabilities appear at fuel Lewis number greater than unity. But excessive lateral conduction heat loss causes edge flame instability even at fuel Lewis number less than unity. The excessive heat loss caused by the smaller burner diameter in which the flame length is an indicator of lateral conduction heat loss extends the region of flame oscillation and accelerates oscillatory instability in comparison to the previous study with the burner diameter of 26mm. Extinction behaviors quite different from the previous study are also addressed.

  • This paper describes the operating characteristic analysis of the PM-type linear oscillatory actuator used as a magnetic circuit breaker for the electromagnetic field, electric circuit, and mechanical motion problems. Transient calculations are based upon a 2D finite element magnetic field solution including non-linearity of materials. Changes of the dynamic characteristics from the eddy current in the plunger are quantified from finite element analysis. A new laminated model is proposed to decrease the eddy current effect.

  • At high angles of attack, aircraft dynamics can display an oscillatory lateral behavior that manifests itself as a limit cycle known as wing rock. In this paper, a classical and neural network based adaptive control design methods of adaptively stabilizing the oscillatory motion by adapting uncertainties are described in detail. All methods are simulated and compared using a model for an 80o swept delta wing.

  • For application to drag-based propulsion system, the dynamics of a segmented structure with multiple hinges undergoing oscillatory motion are investigated. The side flaps are connected to a centre rod with elastic plates acting as hinges. The hinges bend to only one direction so that the structure behave asymmetrically between the power stroke and the recovery stroke. An analytical model is proposed, which estimates the asymmetric deformation of the segmented structure coupled with hinges. Using the proposed model, the effects of key geometric and kinematic parameters on the dynamics of the structure are analyzed.
