  • This paper describes the identification of torsional modes and power oscillation modes including the inter-area modes and local modes of KEPCO using the proposed DFT analysis algorithm which is applied to the digitally recorded RMS values of power system variables such as steady-state measured active power, load angle and so on. As a result, the inter-area mode of 0.65Hz and the local modes of the three different generators were identified. In addition the torsional modes of two steam-turbo generators were analyzed by applying the DFT algorithm. Thus, this paper clearly shows the availability of the proposed DFT algorithm that can analyze the digitally recorded effective values measured from the equipment such as PMU of DSM.

  • The performance of a valveless micropump driven by chamber wall oscillation was numerically investigated for various frequency and amplitude of the oscillation. The numerical study was performed in the range of oscillation frequency from 200Hz to 1000Hz and amplitude from $1{\mu}m$ to $15{\mu}m$. And optimal values for the parameters are found. At the oscillation frequency 600Hz, the net flow rate of micropump shows a maximum value. Also the results show good agreement with the experimental results. The total flow rate was increased with the oscillation amplitude. However, the net flow rate was found to be decreased over $7{\mu}m$.

  • This paper presents a numerical simulation study of the transient behavior of a $2{\times}340MW$ pump-turbine power plant, where the results show an unstable behavior at runaway. First, the modeling of hydraulic components based on equivalent schemes is presented. Then, the 2 pump-turbine test case is presented. The transient behavior of the power plant is simulated for a case of emergency shutdown with servomotor failure on Unit 1. Unstable operation at runaway with a period of 15 seconds is properly simulated using a 1-dimensional approach. The simulation results points out a switch after 200 seconds of the unstable behavior between a period of oscillations initially of 15 seconds to a period of oscillation of 2.16 seconds corresponding to the hydraulic circuit first natural period. The pressure fluctuations related to both the rigid and elastic water column mode are presented for oscillation mode characterization. This phenomenon is described as a switch between a rigid and an elastic water column oscillation mode. The influence of the rotating inertia on the switch phenomenon is investigated through a parametric study.

  • A wide-bandwidth current controller is required for fast charging/discharging of super capacitor applications. Peak current mode is generally used to accomplish fast charging/discharging because this mode has fast response characteristics. However, the peak current mode control must have a slope compensation function to restrain sub-harmonics oscillation. The slope must be changed accordingly if the controlled output voltage is varied. However, changing the slope for every changed output voltage is not easy. The other solution, selecting the slope as the maximum value, causes a slow response problem to occur. Therefore, we propose a hybrid mode controller that uses a peak current and a newly specified valley current. Through the proposed hybrid mode control, the sub-harmonic oscillation does not occur when the duty is larger than 0.5 because of the fast response.

  • A Possibility of combustion instability on longitudinal mode has a high level at large scale of L/D. Solid propellant has a metal particle and a grain of control to pressure oscillation. Solid rocket motor in slotted-tube grain controls pressure oscillation of longitudinal mode. If slot length is shot, pressure oscillation of longitudinal mode is amplified by cylinder part after middle phase of total burn time. A study has analyzed pressure oscillation of longitudinal mode at spectrum and acoustic modal analysis at pressure of result on static firing test.

  • Experiments in low strain rate methane-air counterflow diffusion flames diluted with $CO_2$ have been conducted to investigate the flame extinction behavior and edge flame oscillation in which flame length is less than the burner diameter and thus lateral conductive heat loss in addition to radiative loss could be remarkable at low global strain rates. The critical mole fraction at flame extinction is examined in terms of velocity ratio and global strain rate. It is seen that flame length is closely relevant to lateral heat loss, and this sheets flame extinction and edge flame oscillation considerably. Lateral heat loss causes flame oscillation even at fuel Lewis number less than unity. Edge flame oscillations are categorized into three: a growing-, a harmonic- and a decaying-oscillation mode. Onset conditions of the edge flame oscillation and the relevant modes are examined with global strain rate and $CO_2$ mole fraction in fuel stream. A flame stability map based on the flame oscillation modes is also provided at low strain rate flames.

  • Combustion-driven oscillations in a surface burner have been investigated to clarify their characteristics. A model combustor is made and the oscillation frequencies are measured for various dimensions of the combustor. It is found that there are two modes of oscillations; one is the 'acoustic mode' at high frequencies, associated with the acoustic mode of the combustion system and the other is the 'combustion mode' at low frequencies around 100 Hz, associated with the instability of the flame. Acoustic mode is excited when the surface burner is placed where the phase of particle velocity leads that of acoustic pressure by $90^{\circ}$, for all the combustion conditions. Combustion mode is driven at high combustion rate by the lift of unstable flame near the lower limit of the combustible equivalence ratio. Combustion mode is greatly influenced by the inlet temperature of the premixed gas. When the inlet temperature is very high, the combustion mode does not occur.

  • In this paper, when a refractive index grating and a gain grating were simultaneously present in a DFB laser having a wavelength of 1.55 ㎛, a dielectric film coating was applied so that reflection did not occur on the right mirror surface, so that 𝜌r=0. In case of 𝛿L>0, the characteristics of the oscillation frequency and oscillation gain were analyzed. When the grating phase of the left mirror surface continues to decrease from 𝜋, the graph lines of each mode gradually shift to the left. In case of 𝜅L=10, the threshold gain of the oscillation mode is the lowest. In this case, the mode selectivity is relatively low. From 𝜅L=0.5 to 𝜅L=6, the mode selectivity and the frequency stability are excellent. In the case of DFB lasers with an anti-reflection coated mirror, the threshold gain of the oscillation mode increases but the mode selectivity is about twice as excellent, compared with DFB lasers of having two cleaved facets.

  • A high-speed wavelength swept laser, which is based on oscillation characteristics of a fiber Fabry-Perot tunable filter, is described. The laser is constructed by using a semiconductor optical amplifier, a fiber Fabry-Perot tunable filter, and 3.348 km fiber ring cavity. The wavelength sweeps are repeatatively generated with the repetition period of 61 kHz which is the first parallel oscillation frequency of the Fabry-Perot tunable filter for the low power consumption. Mode-locking is implemented by 3.348 km fiber ring cavity for matching the fundamental of cavity roundtrip time to the sweep period. The wavelength tuning range of the laser is 87 nm(FWHM) and the average output power is 1.284 mW.

  • Long-term nonstationary oscillations (NSOs) are commonly observed in hydrological and climatological data series such as low-frequency climate oscillation indices and precipitation dataset. In this work, we present a stochastic model that captures NSOs within a given variable. The model employs a data-adaptive decomposition method named empirical mode decomposition (EMD). Irregular oscillatory processes in a given variable can be extracted into a finite number of intrinsic mode functions with the EMD approach. A unique data-adaptive algorithm is proposed in the present paper in order to study the future evolution of the NSO components extracted from EMD.
